Cheats II: Electric Boogaloo! Back by popular demand, like before but more! Firsthand accounts from an INTC host who works in the paddock! Our first installment of “How Pro Racers Cheat” was back in May. We didn't intend for this to become a series, but you loved it and asked for more. We could have said no, but that would be lame, and then we wouldn't get to hear Jeff Braun talk about race cars with mercury pumps. (Yes.) This show's format rotates weekly, because squirrel. We call this format “Jeff Shares a Secret.” Like last time, this episode is just Jeff and Sam. Ross was off gallivanting around the country. You know, gadding about! Jazzing around! And other such language I certainly didn't just lift from an online thesaurus! Related Trivia: Sam will be at this weekend's IMSA race at VIR. He may have INTC stickers. If you see him and want one of those stickers, all you have to do is utter the super-secret code phrase: “Hey Sam, can I have a sticker?” This episode was produced by Mike Perlman. ** Support It's Not the Car: Contribute on Patreon www.patreon.com/notthecar ** Topic suggestions, feedback, questions? We tell racing stories and leave out the boring parts. Ross Bentley is a former IndyCar driver and an internationally renowned performance coach and author. Jeff Braun is a championship-winning race engineer. Sam Smith is an award-winning journalist and a former executive editor of Road & Track magazine. Together, we explore the emotion at the heart of the machine. We don't love racing for the nuts and bolts—we love it for what it asks of the bag of meat at the wheel. New episodes every Tuesday.

Tapping into the Northern California real estate market. Investigation into the rise of medical deaths at Sacramento County Jail. Music movement boosts the local jazz scene. Northern California Housing Market Thinking of buying or selling a home? With interest rates sky-high these days, you might be thinking twice. But the numbers tell a very different story, especially here in the Sacramento area. While the market has slowed considerably, homes are selling and buyers are buying and it is very different from years past. Real estate expert and appraiser Ryan Lundquist joins us for a look at the market in the greater Sacramento area including what's selling, what's not and where. Sacramento Jail Deaths Investigation An investigation found that medical-related deaths among people incarcerated in Sacramento County have been on the rise in recent years, a total of 25 from the start of 2021. And all but one have been at the main downtown jail. But unlike homicides and suicides, medical deaths typically lack any independent oversight. Sacramento Bee reporter Theresa Clift joins Insight to share her reporting which examines the six recent deaths that have happened so far this year, including the toll it has on loved ones who are dissatisfied with answers about the circumstances leading up to their death.  Jazzing Up Local Music Scene Live jazz and music of all kinds has become harder to find and enjoy in Sacramento.  Now, the Mayor wants to revive Sacramento's music scene and turn it into the music capital of the West, but some venues are already leading the charge.  Today on Insight, journalist Cathy Cassinos shares her report on Sacramento's jazz scene and how some businesses are making space for live music by turning their venues into live performance destinations.  Plus, local musician and entrepreneur, Joseph Gilman discusses why he felt compelled to add live music to his restaurant's offerings.

The Secret Sauce for Jazzing Up Your Presentations

We talk a lot in the podcast about ways to reduce nervousness and become a better presenter. However, one of the big parts of making a speech is the ability to create presentations that (1) the audience likes and wants to hear, and (2) are interesting and easy to understand. On this episode, I'm going to show you the "secret sauce" to designing fun and interesting presentations. This secret will add humor to your speech. It will also help you make technical content way easier for the audience to understand.Interestingly, the technique is only a secret because so few presenters use these items in their speeches. In fact, the processes are taught in every literature class in the world.Metaphors, Similes, and Analogies: The Special Sauce for Your Presentation MasterpieceMetaphors, Similes, and Analogies are your secret weapon when you create presentations. I like to think of myself as a pretty good speaker and writer. I always hated English class in high school and college, though. So, I always got confused between what was a metaphor, what was a simile, and what was an analogy. To me, these parts of speech were so similar that I didn't really see a lot of difference in them. (Still don't, by the way.)However, these often confused parts of speech are the special sauce to really great presentation burgers. If you use them just right, these items will be like adding the perfect piece of jewelry to a formal dress. They will take a speech that is already pretty good and make it exceptional.Show Notes: Metaphors, Similes, and Analogies: The Special Sauce for Your Presentation Masterpiece (https://www.fearlesspresentations.com/metaphors-similes-and-analogies-the-special-sauce-for-your-presentation-masterpiece/)

After last episode's mother of all chapters, we get a reprieve - a much shorter and  lighthearted chapter devoted to those weird genres of metafiction, deconstruction, and jazzing around (that last one we're pretty sure Gardner  made up.) While we do discuss Gardner's take, we mostly just have fun geeking out over our favorite examples of the genres. But, just when you think it's all congenial conversation, we come upon an eye-raising quote by Gardner, and once again, the knives come out.For our exercise, Renee shifts her memoir into poetry and we discuss the results.Want to hear more of our exercise workshop? We post the bonus podcast, SnarkNotes, and detailed write up of the exercises on our Words to Write by Patreon account.*Support this podcast on Patreon*
