Today I'm joined by Electric Youth! Well, one half of the electronic/synth pop duo - Austin Garrick - without his co-member Bronwyn Griffin. Their latest project is the score for North of Normal, a true coming-of-age drama that jumps between timelines in a forest commune in the 70s and city life in the 80s. Some of you may think that the band's sound would be anachronistic for a film with this setting, and while that may be true, their score still fits right in. Unsurprisingly, Austin and I spend most of our conversation talking about North of Normal, but we also touch on topics like Tangerine Dream and the joy of still getting "new" score releases from them, the importance of a well-curated score release album (learned from becoming fans of the medium at a young age), avoiding being pigeonholed in film and music genres, and plenty more! Electric Youth's score, and much of their other music, is available on all major platforms. North of Normal is currently available on demand or on Paramount+.

Please listen to the table read of Electric Youth written by David Iserson if you haven't yet. This is the after show with David, who has a ton of amazing credits including SNL, New Girl, and Mad Men. We get into a lot of them in this interview! David let us in on some great advice he got from Matthew Weiner when he was on Mad Men and how that show was more of a comedy than people realize. He gives us his trusted metaphor for how to know whether an idea is a keeper. He also shares an absolutely insane note that he got from the network when he was developing Electric Youth. It's one for the crazy note hall of fame for sure. This is a good one! Enjoy it and thanks for listening! Coming up on the A&E Show this week - Electric Youth, A Place To Bury Strangers, Leftfield, The Glove, Royksopp and many more....
This month's pilot is going to make you want to go back in time and start this summer all over again. That's right it's our very first time travel pilot. It's called Electric Youth and it comes from the prolific screenwriter David Iverson (The Spy Who Dumped Me, Mad Men, New Girl, SNL). It centers around Britt, a woman in her 30s who gets a knock on her door one night and finds her high school boyfriend, only he's still sixteen and just successfully traveled in time. This comedy explores our relationship to the past and how it can move us forward. It's a hilarious and sweet pilot that we know you're going to love! We had a stellar cast for this one featuring Lindsey Kraft (Grace & Frankie) as Britt, Devon Bostick (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) as Charley, Demi Adejuyigbe (The Good Place) as Doug, Emily Robinson (Eighth Grade) as Harper/Albany, Dylan Gelula (Loot, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) as Kimberly, Kaitlyn Tanimoto (Camping) as Clara/Fleur, David Iserson as Teen ‘Stache/Customer, and Andrew Reich with stage directions. If you want to watch the video recording of this pilot, you can do so for as little as $5 by becoming a Maximum Fun member at https://maximumfun.org/join/ Tune in next week for our interview with David Iserson. In this episode of “I Could Never Do That,” I “shake” things up a bit to take a self-indulgent and celebratory walk down “memory lane.” Think back to when you were 13, 14, or 15. What or who just lit your world on fire and made you believe that "Anything is Possible?" Was it a book? A Teacher? A Relative? A First Love? Was it a song, athlete, or artist that took hold and sent you on a journey of imagination and unlimited potential? For me, as a 14-year-old songwriter wannabe in the late 80s (i.e. the best music decade ever), that person was Debbie Gibson and that album was “Out of the Blue.” In 1985-1986, I saved up some money to buy a 4-track Tascam multitrack recorder and, week after week, I would lay down pitiful keyboard tracks, hit rewind, and then lay down a drum machine, hit rewind again, and play guitar, only to top it off with some of the worst pitchy vocals you can imagine, but man oh man I was living my dream of making music. It wasn't long after that I started hearing about this young 16-year-old, rising star who was also writing and producing her own music…and that was it. Somehow along the way, over three decades have passed and I'm so thrilled to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the release of "Out of the Blue" by talking with a few Debbie Gibson fans and letting them share THEIR stories about the impact she had on them at the time and still has on their lives. I chose a few old-school friends that I was pen pals back in the day of DGIF (Debbie Gibson International Fan Club), and a couple of new friends I met just a few months ago on her recent tour stop in LA. I even speak with a younger fan who, as she says, was an “Electric Youth” baby born in 1989! PART ONE:Paul and Scott talk about Pearl Snap Studios, contrabassoons, penny whistles, and bagpipes. PART TWO:The guys remember Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, who recently passed away, chat about Taylor's previous gig playing for Alanis Morissette, and talk about why Debbie Gibson deserves serious respect. PART THREE:Our in-depth conversation with Debbie GibsonABOUT DEBBIE GIBSON:You may know Debbie Gibson for her late 1980s hit pop singles “Only in My Dreams,” “Shake Your Love,” “Out of the Blue,” and the chart-toppers “Foolish Beat” and “Lost in Your Eyes.” What you might not realize is that Debbie wrote all those hits completely solo while still a teenager. At the age of 16 she became the youngest artist ever to have written, produced, and performed a #1 single on the Billboard charts. She once shared the ASCAP Songwriter of the Year honor with Bruce Springsteen, the same year she was nominated for Best Pop Female Vocalist by the American Music Awards and Favorite Female Music Performer by the People's Choice Awards. Now more than 35 years into her career, Debbie has sold over 16 million records worldwide, and has released 10 studio albums. Her most recent, The Body Remembers, was released last August, and is her first US studio album in 20 years to feature all original songs, including a new duet version of “Lost in Your Eyes” with Joey McIntyre of New Kids on the Block. Though she was named one of Billboard magazine's Top 60 Female Artists of All Time, Debbie has also found success in musical theater, starring in Les Miserables and Cabaret on Broadway, and in the London West End production of Grease, among more than a dozen other productions. Never a pre-packaged pop invention of record label executives, Debbie was a musical prodigy who has continued to make her mark as a singer, songwriter, producer, musician, actor, and entrepreneur.
Debbie Gibson is a singing-dancing-songwriting-producing-composing musical prodigy who has been serenading the world for 35 years, ever since her self-penned hit “Only In My Dreams” arrived on the Billboard charts when she was just 16 in the summer of 1987. Since then, she has sold more than 16 million albums, released 10 studio albums, toured all over the world, and starred in 17 musicals. Her first album of new songs in 20 years, The Body Remembers, came out this past summer on her own label, Stargirl Records, and it's as surprising as it is satisfying for long-time fans. On BUST's latest “Poptarts” podcast, she talks about shedding her squeaky-clean image, she honors her late mother—the original “momager,” and she pushes back against an industry that routinely discounts artists who appeal to teenage girls.
For the uninitiated: Debbie Gibson is still the youngest female to write, produce, and perform a #1 single, with "Foolish Beat" at age 17. I think I was just learning how to make toast at that age. She wrote all the songs on her debut album Out of the Blue—at age 16. The album had four singles in the US top five and sold more than five million albums. Gibson's second album Electric Youth was the #1 album in the US for five weeks. It contains three singles in the top 20, including the #1 song "Lost in Your Eyes." With that song, Gibson came home from school, started playing the piano, and the song just poured out in real time. "I wrote it in ten minutes and never changed a note," she told me. "I have no idea where it came from."

At the age of 16, Debbie Gibson signed to Atlantic Records and immediately had a string of Top 5 hits, all self-written and co-produced. Her songs “Foolish Beat” and “Lost In Your Eyes” both hit No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 (the former of which made her the youngest female artist to write, produce, and perform a Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 song) and her album Electric Youth spent five weeks at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Album chart. She was recognized by ASCAP as Songwriter of the Year, along with Bruce Springsteen, in 1989 and has since sold over 10 million albums. In addition to music, she has starred in Films, TV and on Broadway and in touring musicals, including playing the roles of Eponine in Les Misérables and Sandy in Grease.
