David let us in on some great advice he got from Matthew Weiner  when he was on Mad Men and how that show was more of a comedy than people realize. He gives us his trusted metaphor for how to know whether an idea is a keeper. He also shares an absolutely insane note that he got from the network when he was developing Electric Youth. This month's pilot is going to make you want to go back in time and start this summer all over again. That's right it's our very first time travel pilot. It's called Electric Youth and it comes from the prolific screenwriter David Iverson (The Spy Who Dumped Me, Mad Men, New Girl, SNL). It centers around Britt, a woman in her 30s who gets a knock on her door one night and finds her high school boyfriend, only he's still sixteen and just successfully traveled in time. This comedy explores our relationship to the past and how it can move us forward.  It's  a hilarious and sweet pilot that we know you're going to love! We had a stellar cast for this one featuring Lindsey Kraft (Grace & Frankie) as Britt, Devon Bostick (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) as Charley, Demi Adejuyigbe (The Good Place) as Doug, Emily Robinson (Eighth Grade) as Harper/Albany, Dylan Gelula (Loot, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) as Kimberly, Kaitlyn Tanimoto (Camping) as Clara/Fleur, David Iserson as Teen ‘Stache/Customer, and Andrew Reich with stage directions.  If you want to watch the video recording of this pilot, you can do so for as little as $5 by becoming a Maximum Fun member at https://maximumfun.org/join/ Tune in next week for our interview with David Iserson. I Could Never Do That
80 Out of the Blue Turns 35! A Special Fan Tribute to Debbie Gibson and the Debut Album That Started It All!

I Could Never Do That

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 15, 2022 144:29

In this episode of “I Could Never Do That,” I “shake” things up a bit to take a self-indulgent and celebratory walk down “memory lane.”  Think back to when you were 13, 14, or 15. What or who just lit your world on fire and made you believe that "Anything is Possible?" Was it a book? A Teacher? A Relative? A First Love? Was it a song, athlete, or artist that took hold and sent you on a journey of imagination and unlimited potential?  For me, as a 14-year-old songwriter wannabe in the late 80s (i.e. the best music decade ever), that person was Debbie Gibson and that album was “Out of the Blue.” In 1985-1986, I saved up some money to buy a 4-track Tascam multitrack recorder and, week after week, I would lay down pitiful keyboard tracks, hit rewind, and then lay down a drum machine, hit rewind again, and play guitar, only to top it off with some of the worst pitchy vocals you can imagine, but man oh man I was living my dream of making music. It wasn't long after that I started hearing about this young 16-year-old, rising star who was also writing and producing her own music…and that was it.  Somehow along the way, over three decades have passed and I'm so thrilled to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the release of "Out of the Blue" by talking with a few Debbie Gibson fans and letting them share THEIR stories about the impact she had on them at the time and still has on their lives.  I chose a few old-school friends that I was pen pals back in the day of DGIF (Debbie Gibson International Fan Club), and a couple of new friends I met just a few months ago on her recent tour stop in LA. I even speak with a younger fan who, as she says, was an “Electric Youth” baby born in 1989!  There was a time I thought, “I could never” adequately thank Debbie for being such a bright light in my world, but actually, thanks to her, I have this mic and am honored to have that chance in this episode.  Episode Resources: "I Could Never Do That" Website Debbie Gibson Website: https://debbiegibsonofficial.com/  Instagram: @debbiegibson - https://www.instagram.com/debbiegibson/  http://www.rocknrollrescuedogs.org/  Theme Music: Your Love by Atch -License: Creative Commons License - Attribution 3.0 Unported (CC BY 3.0) Support the Podcast:  https://www.buymeacoffee.com/CarrieBarrett

At the age of 16 she became the youngest artist ever to have written, produced, and performed a #1 single on the Billboard charts. She once shared the ASCAP Songwriter of the Year honor with Bruce Springsteen, the same year she was nominated for Best Pop Female Vocalist by the American Music Awards and Favorite Female Music Performer by the People's Choice Awards. Now more than 35 years into her career, Debbie has sold over 16 million records worldwide, and has released 10 studio albums. Her most recent, The Body Remembers, was released last August, and is her first US studio album in 20 years to feature all original songs, including a new duet version of “Lost in Your Eyes” with Joey McIntyre of New Kids on the Block. Though she was named one of Billboard magazine's Top 60 Female Artists of All Time, Debbie has also found success in musical theater, starring in Les Miserables and Cabaret on Broadway, and in the London West End production of Grease, among more than a dozen other productions. Never a pre-packaged pop invention of record label executives, Debbie was a musical prodigy who has continued to make her mark as a singer, songwriter, producer, musician, actor, and entrepreneur.

Debbie Gibson is a singing-dancing-songwriting-producing-composing musical prodigy who has been serenading the world for 35 years, ever since her self-penned hit “Only In My Dreams” arrived on the Billboard charts when she was just 16 in the summer of 1987. Since then, she has sold more than 16 million albums, released 10 studio albums, toured all over the world, and starred in 17 musicals. Her first album of new songs in 20 years, The Body Remembers, came out this past summer on her own label, Stargirl Records, and it's as surprising as it is satisfying for long-time fans. On BUST's latest “Poptarts” podcast, she talks about shedding her squeaky-clean image, she honors her late mother—the original “momager,” and she pushes back against an industry that routinely discounts artists who appeal to teenage girls.

For the uninitiated: Debbie Gibson is still the youngest female to write, produce, and perform a #1 single, with "Foolish Beat" at age 17. I think I was just learning how to make toast at that age. She wrote all the songs on her debut album Out of the Blue—at age 16. The album had four singles in the US top five and sold more than five million albums. Gibson's second album Electric Youth was the #1 album in the US for five weeks. It contains three singles in the top 20, including the #1 song "Lost in Your Eyes." With that song, Gibson came home from school, started playing the piano, and the song just poured out in real time. "I wrote it in ten minutes and never changed a note," she told me. "I have no idea where it came from."

When Drive appeared in theaters, Electric Youth was still finding its sound. The track, created in collaboration with producer College, was a defining aesthetic touchstone for the film, appearing throughout. For the Toronto-based duo, it was as good a sign as any that they were on the right track. It was a sort of overnight success for Austin Garrick and Bronwyn Griffin, a pair that had been together since middle school. Released in August, Memory Emotion maintains the group’s atmospheric synth-pop sound. Any one of the tracks could slot comfortably into the Twin Peaks soundtrack. Their first proper release in half a decade, the album comes on the heels of a diverse array of collaborations. There are several soundtrack contributions, along with 2017’s Breathing, an “Original Motion Picture Soundtrack From A Lost Film” — the result of an abandoned horror project by director Anthony Scott Burns. Garrick and Griffin have also collaborated with Gesaffelstein and Ryuichi Sakamoto.

We're drawing smiley faces on our knees, wearing our Electric Youth perfume, and unpacking our Kaboodles. Sure. But more than that, we're revisiting some of the greatest pop music of the 1980s. Debbie is often overlooked or marginalized as a songwriter, singer, arranger, and producer. So we highlight much of that side of her - more than the pop idol, we're celebrating the music. But of course, there are some fun anecdotes about meeting and seeing Debbie perform along the way, some teenage boy memories, and some laughs. So sit back and discover or rediscover the pop mastery of Debbie Gibson.

Heads up: it takes pop icon Debbie Gibson all of 20 seconds to bust into " Only in My Dreams" on this episode. In the late 80s, there was no one bigger in pop music than Debbie Gibson. At 17, she set the record for being the youngest female artist to write, produce and perform a number one song. This summer, she's celebrating the 30th anniversary of her album " Electric Youth" by joining other 80s acts like Salt-N-Pepa, Naughty By Nature and Tiffany on the NKOTB Mixtape Tour. Why is there still such huge demand for 80s pop music? Debbie credits nostalgia and a website called Cameo where stars like Debbie create personalized shout-outs for their fans.

Однако артист уже известен своими звездными коллаборациями: он выпустил суперпопулярный сингл "Lost In The Fire" с рэпером The Weekend, а на его альбоме "Hyperion" в качестве соавторов заявлены участницы трио Haim, а также Hacker & Electric Youth. Двухсерийный фильм "The Show Must Go On - The Queen + Adam Lambert Story" показывает историю сотрудничества Ламберта и легендарной британской группы от первого совместного выступления Брайана Мэя и Роджера Тейлора с конкурсантом American Idol на шоу в 2009 году с песней «We Are the Champions» до приглашения Адама в Queen в качестве солиста. 2 Green Concert. This is a special episode where Brad and Alex discuss the released score for an unreleased film entitled Breathing. The film was directed by Anthony Scott Burns, but taken from him at the last minute, re-edited and scored by Mark Korven, and released as Our House. One of the casualties was the original score by pop-synth duo Bronwyn Griffin (vocals, songwriter) and Austin Garrick (producer, songwriter, synthesizer, and drums) as the band Electric Youth. They released the score as Breathing: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to a Lost Film. Youve probably never heard of it, but Alex was kind enough to bring it to my and your attention. It needs to be heard! A completely original film score along the lines of the electronic minimalism that have been so pervasive over the past ten years. In addition to Breathing, Brad decided to delve into another electronic but also older score, The Neverending Story. While Brad may not have gotten all the facts just right, the maze of discovering the American release, the German release, AND the bootleg edition was certainly eye-opening. Follow along as Brad and Alex navigate two incredibly unique scores.

Zappin it to ya'. Castle sets, Mary-Kate and/or Ashley, power-mullet face dancer. This song really thinks its saying something. Spoiler, it isn't. It is, however a ton of fun. Loads of gibberish in too-long of a song, and Debbie Gibson may have been super-high. And she shared a songwriting award with Bruce Springsteen. The video is worth watching, as its off-the-rails crazy.
