If you missed EP3, be sure to check that out first to get the full list. What are the things you need to learn, and in what order? This is one of the biggest and most confounding questions for beginners. While there is no one-size-fits-all path, there are definitely some basics everyone needs as their foundation. I will tell you what I I think the most important things to learn are at first, and give you a sense of what learning these might look like. By the end of this episode, you will have a clearer picture of where to focus your efforts in the first year or so of your illustration education.HOW TO SUPPORTMy team and I work hard to produce each episode for this podcast. How do you introduce ‘start-up', entrepreneurial thinking to a 400-year old artisan community? In Bagru, the hub of Rajasthani block-printing, Jeremy Fritzhand tells us that a start-up mindset is critical to growing the industry and “putting creative power back in the hands of the artisans.” A long-time resident of Bagru, a tiny village southwest of Jaipur, Jeremy is co-founder of Studio Bagru, a custom block printing house that streamlines and brings equity to artisan collaborations. Now, Jeremy and his artisan cohorts are tackling issues around cultural appropriation. In this episode, he tells us how he joined a group of forward-thinking women to start Mahila Print, a landmark approach for protecting and licensing indigenous designs. Today’s episode is the first in a new series focused on those who teach their craft to others and it brought me to the studio of Jen Hewett in San Francisco a few weeks ago. Jen is an illustrator, printmaker and surface designer who has been teaching block printing to others over the last several years and she has just recently transitioned to working on her art full time. I was, of course, curious to see how adding the element of teaching to her business model made that transition possible. In the interview we talk about some of the issues that come up around teaching others to do what you do and why Jen actually wants to see her students open their own block printing shops and studios. She also chats very candidly about how she sets boundaries regarding her time and skills, how she's committing to breaking out of her routines this year and much more.
