Extraordinary Creatives
An Artist's Guide to Working with Commercial Art Galleries | How to Get Represented and Maintain the Relationship

Extraordinary Creatives

As an artist, how can you get noticed and represented by art galleries? In this episode, Ceri talks all about the intricacies of securing and maintaining a relationship with a commercial art gallery. She offers a behind the scenes look at what galleries seek in artists, what they offer, and how artists can position themselves for success. If you are an artist considering gallery representation, this episode will give you a great overview and give you practical advice for navigating the complex world of commercial art galleries. KEY TAKEAWAYS Commercial art galleries seek artists who actively engage with the art world, not just those who create great work. Participation in exhibitions, events, and networking is crucial. Gallery representation is not the only path to success. Artists can create their own opportunities and build a fan base independently, especially in the digital age. The gallery/artist relationship is a partnership. Both parties need to contribute actively to make it successful, with clear communication and mutual support. Galleries offer comprehensive support, including administration, advocacy, and networking opportunities. However, they expect transparency, regular new work, and active participation from artists in return. Building a relationship with a gallery takes time. Artists should research galleries, attend their events, and focus on creating connections rather than pitching themselves directly. Artists should focus on creating outstanding work, documenting it professionally, and organising their inventory. This preparation is crucial for attracting gallery representation. Being aware of common gallery issues can help artists prepare, such as misalignment in sales strategies and communication problems. Before seeking gallery representation, artists should develop key champions of their work and build diverse audience connections. This can help them get noticed by galleries over time. BEST MOMENTS "Gone are the days when artists could just hide away in their studios. Nowadays, success often means engaging in live interviews, hosting studio visits for collectors, attending dinners and responding to invitations for group shows, biennials and art fairs." "Selecting an artist for their roster is like a marriage. It's not something to be rushed into lightly, and there has to be chemistry." "The art world wouldn't exist without artists, but many artists feel that the gallery holds all the power and as a result don't ask enough questions before entering into a partnership or whilst they're working together." "Even if you evolve your style or explore different mediums, the gallery values a commitment to the ongoing artistic journey." "Remember, a successful relationship with a commercial gallery is a two-way street. By actively engaging and contributing, you not only enhance your own artistic career, but also strengthen the gallery's position in the art world." "Don't project what you hope to be the case and ignore warning signals or your gut instinct. If something feels off, it probably is." "Artists often tell themselves the unhelpful story that they have failed if they're not represented by a major gallery. This is simply not true." "Research the programs of the galleries you want to connect with, see if your work resonates with their roster and identify what makes you excited and why." Paid 2 Draw is back with an all-new season! On the first episode, we get to talk to Anna Rupprecht who is an artist and freelance illustrator based in Berlin. Her art reflects the current zeitgeist through clear contours and interesting image dynamics with diverse protagonists of her generation. Since going freelance after graduating from the University of Applied Sciences in Berlin, she has worked with a wide range of international clients like Adidas, Apple, Netflix, the New Yorker, NY Times and Pinterest.  Anna's hyper-detailed work stands out with bright colors, unusual perspectives, political themes and bizarre fashion elements. But no matter what style you're working in, she argues, what it all comes down to is a good idea. The most inspiring people for her are interdisciplinary artists who put their creativity first.  Also, creatives should always make time for quiet contemplation. In order to come up with great ideas, Anna says, boredom is an integral part of the creative process. Sometimes you just need to sit around and do nothing.  We talk about all this and so much more on the season premiere of Paid 2 Draw. From losing herself in the process of trying to fit in to phone-induced depression, the pressure of having to be online, using references and being the last true Heelys ambassador, Anna touched on every subject you could think of. Don't miss this super inspiring chat we had with one of Berlin's greatest! Should you make art that sells?  Should you adapt your work so it sells?? Should you create landscapes in an abstract style as they sell for more?   In the past artists have come to me asking these questions but also telling me ‘I've been told my work is too commercial' or ‘ my work isn't commercial enough'.   In today's episode I will discuss what commercial art is, and whether you should make your work more commercial.

Maxfield Parrish is one of the most iconic artist of the Golden Age of Illustration. He was most well known for his calendar covers in the 1920's and 1930's. These would been seen across America's homes at the time, and often the calendar artwork would be saved and framed, after that year had passed. He was also commissioned for many magazine covers, book illustrations and commercial artwork (such as for Jello). But Parrish, like many other Golden Age Illustrators (such as JC Leyendecker and Howard Pyle), did not get the notoriety and name recognition they deserved. Aside from Parrish being probably my favorite artist, he was also a good person to profile as being hidden in history. Guest speaker: Judy Goffman Cutler, Founder and Director of the National Museum of American Illustration in Newport, Rhode Island, and the American Illustrators Gallery in New York City. For Judy's full biography, please refer to the People Hidden in History website (link here).  Judy will review key aspects of Parrish's professional life (spanning 70 years) and the 3 distinct artistic style periods. And you'll learn about the history of the National Museum of American Illustration, which houses the largest collection of Parrish's world-wide.  And finally, you will learn about his very distinctive style, which can be fantastical, or photo-realistic landscape paintings. You'll also be given an understanding of his painting techniques which provided a physical luminosity to his canvases. There is only one. Fernando Pessoa 'Autopsychography' The poet is a man who feigns And feigns so thoroughly, at last He manages to feign as pain The pain he really feels, And those who read what once he wrote Feel clearly, in the pain they read, Neither of the pains he felt, Only a pain they cannot sense. Paula explains her initial approach to working with the Lacefence team as thinking of the areas of different stitches as patterned fabrics in an applique, to gaining a deeper technical knowledge of lace structure while working on her extraordinary architectural piece "Jacaranda" in the Perth suburb of Mount Pleasant. The incredible beauty of this artwork led to it winning the Coda Worx 2020 “Commercial Art” prize and has introduced Paula to the wonderfully supportive international network of lace makers and enthusiasts with whom this work resonates profoundly. In this remarkable interview with Fatema Barot, you will learn that being brave is not necessarily about revolutionary quantum leaps, but about making small courageous moves - one move the time. Fatema has graced us already with her presence as a Special Guest on the 2-episodes program “5 key ingredients to make a captivating presentation” (Part 1 and Part 2), where she shared her expert knowledge regarding creating presentations that are unique and memorable. However, in the meantime, we have discovered that Fatema has an amazing personal story to share, and we have decided to feature her journey on our bi-weekly LIVE SHOW. Before you listen to the recording, please read her story (as posted on the Inspire Young India Instagram) - and trust us, this was only a little teaser for what we’ve heard while talking with Fatema :) “I was a topper at school and Doctor, Engineer, CA were thought to be the natural choices. But I loved drawing. In a very conservative town, I was fortunate to have a family that encouraged me to be ambitious and explore my talents irrespectively. I applied for Interior Design but my art teacher suggested Commercial Art. And so I joined JJ Institute of Applied Art. In my third year, at the age of 20, I got engaged. I didn't know if I was ready for a life changing decision like that, but social conditioning kept me from questioning it. I won a Silver medal in my final year, after which I worked at a mainstream Advertising agency in Mumbai for 2 months. My academic side pointed me towards the Masters Program at Industrial Design Centre IIT. While at IDC, I broke my relationship. It came with a massive guilt. I just knew I needed time to understand myself. After IDC, I didn't want to join the mainstream advertising again. When an Information Design company in Goa offered me a position at a salary comparable to Mumbai, I decided to take up the job. I worked there for 4 years and that is where I met my husband. I got married in Goa and with that my own cultural community expelled me. At work I was handling both design and business towards the end of my stint and that took a toll. I burnt out and quit to give myself a break. That quickly followed with me working with another Design startup in Goa for 1.5 years. Meanwhile my husband decided to study and pursue a Masters in design abroad. I decided to move with him. I applied to LEGO in Denmark and got a call. I had never flown abroad. My first ever international flight was for the interview with LEGO. Before I got back home, I got the job. Looking back, I couldn't have planned this. I believe in being open, taking the opportunity and being surprised at the end of it. I've been in Denmark for four years now. In 2017, I lost my mom. S

Drawing On Experience: an Audio PaintCast™ about Art, Art School, Painting, Freelance Illustration and Creative Pursuits.

June 10, 2013 • Today would have been my mother's 85th birthday. To honor her memory, and to share with you my mother's unique perspective on life, I'm sharing with you several recordings I made with her in the last year of her life. She lived exactly 84.5 years, from June 10, 1928–December 10, 2012. I asked her, among other things in these short interviews, what her early married life was like, what it was like raising 4 kids, where my dad worked in his early years, and what her interest in Art had been. I hope you find this engaging and informative, and that you get a sense of the kind of parents I am honored and grateful to have been born to. You don't get to pick your parents... but if I could, in a heartbeat I'd pick the same ones who reared me. Good memories.

June 1, 2013 - This really is the beginning of the "Drawing on Experience" Audio Paintcast™ It was recorded on two separate occasions exactly one year apart. I met with Thomas Blackshear and Frank Ordaz at a Conference Center in Ashland, OR where the three of us taught as guest instructors for a 4-day artist conference, Masterpiece Christian Artists Conference, invited by founder and organizer Jeanne Randall. I've known each gentleman for over 30 years, and had not seen either of them in probably 2 decades or more. As old friends do, we just got to chatting and talking about 'stories of the drawing board,' and it crossed my mind that this ought to be recorded — so it takes off right where I click the recorder on. I think you'll laugh. Enjoy!
