Gendered Publics: Chandraprava Saikiani and the Mahila Samiti in Colonial Assam (Oxford UP, 2024) is a first-of-its-kind comprehensive appraisal of the relatively unexplored but highly impactful women's associations, the Assam Mahila Samiti (1926 cont.) which led one of the most remarkable women's movements in colonial India; Sucheta Kripalani praised it as the ‘largest democratic women's association in India' in 1949. Central to the Assam Mahila Samiti story is its founding Secretary, the firebrand feminist Chandraprava Saikiani (1901–72), who while being an unwed mother and belonging to a lower caste, was a celebrated writer, mobilizer, and publisher. The book traverses these individual and collective journeys from the 1920s to the 1950s and explores how women's movements evolve in conversation/contestation with both traditional spaces such as naam kirtan and contemporary ones of tribal-caste associations, anti-colonial movements, and international ideological paradigms such as the Bolshevik revolution. The book also plots through specific examples, such as the controversy surrounding the Samiti's serving of a legal notice to a groom in 1934 to stop child marriage, to argue that gender may not function merely as constitutive of the public, but women's collectives may shape, transform, and orchestrate a veritable gendered public, resistant to both native patriarchy and sometimes to colonial authority. The study makes crucial methodological intervention through an interdisciplinary approach by constantly juxtaposing print sources with handwritten minutes of early mahila samiti meetings, performative spaces such as women's singing of naam kirtan and women's weaving, and women's memory (recorded as part of a digital archive of the mahila samitis in Assam). Welcome to Where The Chasm Is Bridged, a podcast by Behind The Scenes, an NGO aimed towards working for Dignity of Labor. Disability can be of different kinds. According to the Census survey, it has been categorized into 5 categories, namely, visual impairment, mobility impairment, mental impairment, speech impairment and hearing impairment. According to the International Labor Organization, 4-5% of India's population is said to be affected by one or more of these disabilities. Due to the sheer size of India's population, even a small percentage can lead to a population of several millions. There are many people who are stigmatized for being disabled and are not allowed to tap into their full potential. Mrs. Shashi Azad is the National Vice Chairperson of the Mahila and Bal Vikas campaign of Bharat Vikas Parishad. Ma'am is also working as President of Mahila samiti of Vanvasi Raksha Parivar foundation which focuses on helping women in the tribal area. She has been working in this field for many years now, along with her husband. Through Bharat Vikas Parishad, ma'am has helped many disabled people by providing them with artificial limbs. In the lockdown too, she worked hard to give food to workers and the people in their vicinity, both through the organization and in her personal capacity.
How do you introduce ‘start-up', entrepreneurial thinking to a 400-year old artisan community? In Bagru, the hub of Rajasthani block-printing, Jeremy Fritzhand tells us that a start-up mindset is critical to growing the industry and “putting creative power back in the hands of the artisans.” A long-time resident of Bagru, a tiny village southwest of Jaipur, Jeremy is co-founder of Studio Bagru, a custom block printing house that streamlines and brings equity to artisan collaborations. Now, Jeremy and his artisan cohorts are tackling issues around cultural appropriation. In this episode, he tells us how he joined a group of forward-thinking women to start Mahila Print, a landmark approach for protecting and licensing indigenous designs. 1.2 billion menstruating women around the globe do not have access to sanitary products. Alone in India, only 12% of the 355 million menstruating women can afford sanitary protection. 23 million women drop out of school every year once they start menstruating. So what is the root cause of period poverty? Are we doing enough to solve this problem? What is the need for sustainable sanitary products? What are the current alternatives to sanitary pads? Why is a menstrual cup not socially acceptable? Tune in to listen to Shagun Maheshwari talk about the groundwork that the Myna Mahila Foundation does to alleviate period poverty and help the women of Mumbai's slum community.
While Prince Harry has been making cameo appearances on TV and was spotted this past week quietly volunteering for a veteran’s charity in Compton in California, we have not seen very much of Meghan for almost a month now.Meghan may well be busy meeting with her lawyers as her case against Associated newspapers for publishing her private letter to her father Thomas, continues to wing its way through the UK court. At the end of October, Meghan asked for and was granted permission to adjourn the trial from January 2021 to later next year. Why? We don’t know – the judgment from the court speaks to ‘confidential grounds’ and segments of the judge’s decision have been redacted to ensure that the reasons remain private. https://www.judiciary.uk/judgments/sussex-v-associated-newspapers-ltd/One of Meghan’s favourite charities was in the news this week. Meghan has supported the Myna Mahila Foundation based in India for going on 5 years. Founder Suhani Jalota has been named as one of the 3 finalists for the Global Citizen Prize, Cisco Youth Leadership Award 2020. https://mynamahila.com/Meghan first connected with Suhani in 2016. They met in New York when Suhani was being presented with a prize. In January 2017 Meghan travelled out to Mumbai with the charity World Vision and got to see firsthand the work that the foundation was doing. In 2017 Meghan wrote an article about the foundation for Time Magazine, with the title "How Periods Affect Potential". The same year Meghan included the foundation's founder in a list of "The Ten Women Who Changed My Life" published in Glamour magazine.Meghan not only invited Suhani to her Royal Wedding in May 2018, but instead of asking for wedding gifts Harry and Meghan asked guests to donate to one of seven different charities in their name, of which the Myna Foundation was one of them.Meghan has continued to champion this foundation which works with the women and girls living in the slums of Mumbai in India. Today we'll be speaking to Suhani Jalota the founder and CEO of Myna Mahila Foundation. Initially a startup in a Mumbai slum, Suhani founded this organisation to tackle period shame in India. Now that the royal wedding fever has died down a bit, we want to take a step back and present to you our detailed conversation with Suhani Jalota, the founder if Myna Mahila Foundation, which was the only Indian non-profit to be invited to the royal wedding. The Myna Mahila Foundation is an Indian organization which empowers women by encouraging discussion of taboo subjects such as menstruation, and by setting up workshops to produce low-cost sanitary protection to enable girls to stay in school. We spoke to Suhani about how this amazing journey started and discussed the intricacies involved in running such a sustainable and cost-efficient organisation which came into the global spotlight within just three years of its founding.
Antroji mūsų podkasto viešnia, populiari blogerė, savo tapatybės neatskleidžianti, paslaptingoji Mahila. Kalbamės apie filmus, komediją ir blogerio kasdienybę.
