David sits down with Erin Chandler over video call to discuss her new true crime memoir, Bluegrass Sons. They discuss her childhood in Las Vegas, her relationship with her uncle Bradley Bryant, and her reasons for writing the book. Erin also reads an excerpt from her book. Bluegrass Sons is available for checkout from the library and for purchase from Erin's website.Bluegrass Sons is a true crime family saga set between Lexington, Kentucky, and the desert days and gaudy nights of 1970s Las Vegas, Nevada, with a little El Paso, Guatemala, and Savannah thrown in. The story is about Bradley Bryant, a United States Marine who lived a double life. The FBI labeled him "a one-man crime wave" responsible for the largest gun-running, drug-smuggling network in the United States. His family considered him their rock, his mother's favorite, and a successful Philadelphia businessman. For the first time in forty years, Brad Bryant tells his truth, recording hours of conversations with his niece, Erin Chandler. Bluegrass Sons includes historical testimonies from those who were along for that ride, giving exclusive interviews to Erin Chandler for this book. It's a tale of drugs, arms, assassinations, and espionage where your lies are your life even if you are one of the good guys.

January 25, 1977. Lexington, Kentucky. 24-year old Melanie Flynn leaves her workplace, but fails to show up for an appointment and does not return home for dinner with her family. Two weeks later, Melanie's abandoned car is discovered in an apartment complex parking lot and her purse is found washed up next to the Kentucky River later that summer. After numerous eyewitnesses claim to have seen Melanie alive in Florida, the police close the investigation, but her family is convinced she was murdered. Over the years, rumours circulate that Melanie worked as an undercover informant for the narcotics squad and was killed by corrupt police officers who were involved in drug trafficking. The story eventually balloons into a mammoth scandal known as the “Bluegrass Conspiracy”, but no trace of Melanie is ever found. This week's episode of “The Path Went Chilly” explores a convoluted missing persons case which may have been connected to a multi-million-dollar drug smuggling ring & The tie in tragedy that is Cocaine Bear. Today on Crime & Entertainment, we share the crazy tale of Andrew Thorton & The Cocaine Bear. Thorton grew up in the Kentucky area and after serving briefly in law enforcement, he quickly made the transition into an outlaw. Thorton, along with Bradley Bryant & others, eventually formed a crime syndicate called "The Company." They would smuggle everything from weapons to drugs from South America to the United States. Eventually when the heat came down and over 25 people were arrested, utter chaos ensued. A murder rampage began that included a federal judge and a Florida State Attorney with many others falling victim. Eventually, Thornton would meet his demise during a drug running operation where he would jump from his airplane with multiple weapons, a bullet proof vest, and a duffle bag with 75lb of cocaine strapped to him. This weight however was too heavy, which resulted in his parachute not opening and he subsequently plummeted to his death. However, before he jumped, he threw out multiple bags of cocaine that landed in the Chattahoochee area. Unbelievably, this cocaine was discovered and consumed by a black bear. This is a story you do not want to miss folks.... I guarantee it.Like us on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/crimeandente...Follow us on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/crimenenter...Listen on Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/4T67Bs5...Listen on Apple Music - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast...Listen on Stitcher - https://www.stitcher.com/show/crime-e...Listen on Google Podcast - https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0...Listen on Amazon Music -

This is the wild tale of Andrew Carter "Drew" Thornton II, an American narcotics officer and lawyer who became the head member of "The Company", a drug smuggling ring in Kentucky that ended with a bear eating $15 Million worth of coke. The story was immortalized in a bestselling book by Sally Denton called The Bluegrass Conspiracy. Just how far up did this one go? And why did that bear eat so much cocaine? We sit down with the lead detective of the Turpin homicide, Ret. Assistant Police Chief Fran Root, to discuss details of the case. Of course, we couldn't NOT ask about his time on the force during the famed Bluegrass Conspiracy days, too. Ret. Commander David Lyons of the incredible "Murder Police Podcast" also joins us to discuss forensic advancements and just how much Lexington has changed over the years from a cop's perspective.
Today I speak with two of the Trillbillies, specifically Tom Sexton and Tarence Ray. We discuss many aspects of esoteric Kentucky, like the word itself and the other name settlers picked out for the land, as well as the Indian mounds. Then we discuss the economics of Ashland Kentucky which might explain some of the high strangeness that's occurred there, from massacres to mafia coal companies to Charlie Manson. Then we discuss the history of Kentucky and LSD, like with Captain Hubbard and Augustus Owsley Stanley III, two of the main LSD gurus and both native sons. Then, we discuss the history of LSD and MKULTRA experiments in Kentucky, which leads us to discuss the Kentucky blue bloods and high society in Lexington. From there, we get into the Bluegrass Conspiracy, with former Lexington PD narcotics task force officer Andrew Thornton III falling to his death strapped with 40 kilos of cocaine. This ties into Lexington high society, but also international crime, the CIA, Adnan Khashoggi, and Thornton's paramilitary terrorist training camp in Kentucky. To wrap it up, we talk about Kentucky's first UFO incident.

Things are not going as smooth for The Company in the early 1980s as they were just a few years before. They've got informants ratting left and right and are doing anything they can to keep from being discovered: a staged car accident, a media circus trial, a shooting at the Merrick Inn, and yet another high-profile murder. Will the drug and arms smuggling kingpins, that ruled the Bluegrass for over a decade, finally be exposed? Find out on the latest installment of our "Bluegrass Conspiracy" series.
Fried chicken and old governors. Missing girls and the Kentucky River. Made-up CIA operatives and perhaps the most infamous party house in all of Lexington, Kentucky. Join us for our latest installment of The Bluegrass Conspiracy series.
Drug trafficking. Arms smuggling. International espionage. Fraud. Embezzlement. Entrapment. Murder. We recap everything Bluegrass Conspiracy and explore the events that led to the downfall of the men known as The Company. Though six other states had them under investigation in 1981, Kentucky was always safe harbor.
Murders, millionaires, the mob, and the Blue Grass Airport. The fifth installment of our Bluegrass Conspiracy series includes The Company's first big drug run and an unbelievable DEA cover up. Later, we chat about outlandish mafia nicknames as well as our favorite, can't-miss country drives around Lexington.
There hasn't been a single newspaper article published since 1977 that doesn't link the famous disappearance of Lexington socialite Melanie Flynn to the events of The Bluegrass Conspiracy. We investigate her missing person's case and explain our take on the theories of her tragic fate.
Introductions are in order, y'all. In our very first episode, we introduce you to Lexington, KY-- a town that has cemented itself as a Southern capital for historic scandal. We dive right in to the first installment of our "Bluegrass Conspiracy" series by introducing you to the gutsy Drew Thorton, Lexington's notorious police officer turned drug smuggler. And later, we review the Railbird music festival at Keeneland.
Sally Denton is an award winning investigative reporter, author and historian who has written a number of books, including The Bluegrass Conspiracy. It is an inside story of power, greed, drugs and murder and it blew the lid off of Lexington, Ky. when it was released. Denton was a WKYT investigative reporter from about 1980-83 and who worked several reports on corruption in the Lexington Police Department. Her book The Bluegrass Conspiracy was released in 1989 to both raves and jeers. It is a detailed account of the events that both surrounded and lead up to former Lexington Police officer Drew Thorton parachuting to his death with 150 pounds of cocaine, it was the beginning of a scandal that reached far beyond the rolling hills of the Bluegrass and became one of Lexington's and the country's most intriguing stories.
