In this exuberant real-life adventure, the publisher of DC Comics comes to the rescue of a family trying to flee Nazi Berlin, their lives linking up with a dazzling cast of 20th-century icons, all eagerly pursuing the American dream.Family lore had it that Bonnie Siegler's grandfather crossed paths in Midtown Manhattan late one night in 1954 with Marilyn Monroe, her white dress flying up around her as she filmed a scene for The Seven Year Itch. Jules Schulback had his home movie camera with him, capturing what would become the only surviving footage of that legendary night. Bonnie wasn't sure she quite believed her grandfather's story…until, cleaning out his apartment, she found the film reel. The discovery would prompt her to investigate all of her grandfather's seemingly tall tales—and lead her in pursuit of a remarkable piece of forgotten history bridging old Hollywood, the birth of the comic book, and the Holocaust. The American Way is a vivacious story of two very different men both striving to make their way in New York, their lives intersecting with a glittering array of luminaries, from Billy Wilder and Joe DiMaggio to Superman creators Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel. It's a kaleidoscopic tale of hope and reinvention, of daring escapes and fake identities, of big dreams and the magic of movies, and what it means to be a real-life Superman.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. What do Marilyn Monroe, Superman and... Jules Schulback have him common? Helene Stapinski and Bonnie Siegler say Bonnie's grandfather and the two pop culture icons combine to tell an essential story of the 20th Century in the United States. Jules was walking in Manhattan when he happened upon Marilyn as she filmed the iconic scene for, "The Seven Year Itch." He used his film camera to capture what would become one of the most iconic images of the century, a film that was lost to history until Bonnie found the footage in a closet. After Stapinski wrote an article for the New York Times about how the footage was found after many decades, they discovered that Jules had been rescued by the publisher of the Superman comic series. They later teamed up to write, "The American Way: A True Story of Nazi Escape, Superman and Marilyn Monroe." During our interview, they explain the stories behind their main characters, and why they make for the perfect lens to view the twentieth century.Helene Stapinski's website can be found at https://helenestapinski.com/Bonnie Siegler's website can be found at http://www.8point5.com/Information on their book can be found at https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/The-American-Way/Helene-Stapinski/9781982171667The original article by Helene Stapkinski can be found here https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/13/nyregion/marilyn-monroe-skirt-blowing-new-york-film.html?searchResultPosition=1Support our show at https://patreon.com/axelbankhistory**A portion of every contribution is given to a charity for children's literacy** "Axelbank Reports History and Today" can be found on social media at https://twitter.com/axelbankhistory https://instagram.com/axelbankhistoryHistory Nerds UnitedLet's make history fun again! Most recently, she was the creative director of the Trump parody autobiography “You Can’t Spell America Without Me” by Alec Baldwin and Kurt Andersen and created the main title sequence for Will & Grace. She has taught at the graduate level for many years at the School of Visual Arts and Yale University, conducted workshops at the Maryland Institute College of Art and Rhode Island School of Design and judged design competitions all over the place. On the day after the National School Walkout Against Gun Violence, and a few days before The March for Our Lives, Bonnie and Mallory talk about pussy hats, Trump obsessions, memes, fonts, "Our Bodies, Ourselves," being a mother, and fear of failure. Sometimes they just have no idea how to interact with professional creative people."
