Key Takeaways Parents don't need to be professionals to entertain and engage with their children through music; it's about presence and enthusiasm. Encouraging imaginative play fosters a deep connection between parents and children and creates lasting memories. Music can bridge the gap in communication with young children, tapping into their emotional understanding. The perspective taken in "Daddy Live in Concert" highlights a child's view of their parents as heroes. Tweetable Quotes "Music is so great for kids anyway, whether it's being played on a speaker, but when they hear it live... it's a soul thing." — Tyler Hilton "Kids are just looking for reasons to have fun and be silly or stupid with their parents." — Tyler Hilton "Parents are the coolest people in the room for only a short time. This book encapsulates that magic." — Tyler Hilton Show Notes by Barevalue.

Lower head counts from the transition to precision-scheduled railroading and furloughs in 2020 contributed to poor service and supply-chain dislocations during the pandemic, Oberman says. Improving service is imperative for railroads to win share back from trucks and also for the overall health of the economy. I enjoyed talking with Amy Shearn and Hannah Oberman-Breindel this summer when they were in the Artist-in-Residence writing program at Woodstock's Byrdcliffe Arts Colony, and even more so on our recent podcast discussion of Virginia Woolf's To The Lighthouse, which is considered to be one of the great literary masterpieces of the twentieth century.  I had not previously read any Virginia Woolf and I had not studied literary modernism. Despite being uninitiated, I was struck by the way Woolf captured the human condition and, in a realistic way, the unstructured non-linear thought processes of her characters. Written in 1927, the novel spans the time from just before to just after World War I The story itself, which has numerous autobiographical overlaps, revolves around the Ramsey family and their guests at their summer home by the sea in the Scottish Hebrides. Lots goes on, but only in the sense that life goes on, and it's all really great.  Our podcast discussion was very much in the vein of Woolf's stream of consciousness narrative style, depicting “the multitudinous thoughts and feelings which pass through the mind" of a narrator, “an overlapping of images and ideas”. Virginia Woolf wrote in her diary,  “The method of writing smooth narrative can't be right. Things don't happen in one's mind like that, we experience, all the time, an overlapping of images and ideas, and modern novels should convey our mental confusion instead of neatly rearranging it. The reader must sort it out”. And we did try to sort it out!

Adina is the creator of “Big Books for Little Hands”, a valuable resource for parents and educators seeking the best books to navigate the challenges of life with kids to the best books for navigating the challenges of life with kids.   Episode Highlights 01.40: Adina mentions the importance of food in Jewish holidays, emphasizing that eating together is a significant part of the celebration. 03.40: Sukkot is a holiday during which people build temporary huts outside their homes. This holiday is a celebration, often associated with the harvest season, where communal meals are held in these temporary huts.  04:15: Simchat holiday is a celebration of reading the Torah, the Old Testament, from beginning to end over the course of a year. Simchat Torah is a joyful holiday filled with festivities, including lots of eating and family fun.  05.52: Christopher notes that Yom Kippur is a solemn holiday and it's a specific time when people can reflect on any offenses they may have committed against their family, friends, God, and the world around them. 07.15: Adina emphasizes that seeking forgiveness tradition is beautiful because it helps prevent small transgressions from accumulating within family relationships. It allows people to come full circle, make amends, and start fresh, fostering reconciliation and positive relationships. 09:25: Christopher asks Adina to describe the foods and recipes that are typically included in celebratory Jewish meals.  10.21: In Jewish celebrations food varies from house to house and my family but during Rosh Hashanah, there are several symbolic foods like apples dipped in honey, braided bread, and Matzo ball soup and brisket. 11.52: Adina suggests that food is an excellent way to engage children in cultural traditions. Parents can involve their kids by either preparing food together or sitting down to eat and explaining the significance of the dishes being served to help children feel connected to their heritage and understand the reasons behind the holiday customs. 12.16: Adina recommends reading books about Jewish holidays to children. These books can be a valuable resource in making abstract concepts more understandable and relatable to young minds. 16.06: Adina suggests seeking out a local Jewish Community Centre, which can be found in many states across the United States. JCCs typically offer a wide range of programming for all ages and levels of observance which allows families to participate in meaningful ways within the Jewish community and helps build a strong Jewish identity for their children. 3 Key Points There are several Jewish holidays during this season, starting with Rosh Hashanah, which is the Jewish New Year, says Adina. She explains that Rosh Hashanah is a time for celebration, renewal, reflection, and a focus on making the upcoming year better. Adina explains that Rosh Hashanah is a joyful holiday and is a time of renewal and rebirth, similar to the way January 1st is celebrated as the New Year in the secular calendar. During Rosh Hashanah, people often engage in the custom of dipping apples into honey, symbolizing the desire for a sweet and prosperous year ahead. PJ Library serves as a practical and accessible way for parents and caregivers to introduce their children to Jewish traditions and strengthen their connection to their cultural heritage, says Adina. Tweetable Quotes “Simchat holiday follows Sukkot in the Jewish calendar and is marked by lively and spirited celebrations within the Jewish community.” - Adina Oberman “You can say "Happy New Year" to anyone celebrating Rosh Hashanah but in general for any Jewish holiday, you can use the phrase "Chag Sameach," which means "Happy Holiday." This is a versatile greeting suitable for various Jewish celebrations.” - Adina Oberman   Resources Mentioned Helping Families Be Happy Podcast Apple https://www.bigbooksforlittlehands.com/ Podcast Editing

K. Abstract: The IGF2BP family of RNA binding proteins consists of three paralogs that regulate intracellular RNA localization, RNA stability, and translational control. Although IGF2BP1 and 3 are oncofetal proteins, IGF2BP2 expression is maintained in many tissues, including the heart, into adulthood. Previous studies indicated that IGF2BP2 is upregulated in cardiomyocytes during cardiac stress and remodelling and returns to normal levels in recovering hearts. These results suggested that IGF2BP2 might play an adaptive role during cardiac stress and recovery. Using a conditional, inducible transgenic mouse line, we found that enhanced expression of the IGF2BP2 transgene in newborn or adult hearts leads to dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), with remodelling, fibrosis, and death within 3-4 weeks. Downregulation of the transgene after 2 weeks, however, rescues these mice, with complete recovery by 12 weeks. Proteomic analysis identified a downregulation of sarcomeric and mitochondrial proteins in hearts overexpressing IGF2BP2, and electron microscopy revealed fragmented mitochondria and elongated, thinner sarcomeres. Consistent with these results, IGF2BP2 is upregulated in patients with DCM or after myocardial infarction. These results show that cardiac stress upregulates IGF2BP2, leading to remodelling and compensation of the heart. Prolonged expression, however, leads to heart failure and death, making it an attractive target for therapeutic intervention. Copy rights belong to original authors. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.11.02.513937v1?rss=1 Authors: Keijzer, N., Oberman, K., Oroszi, T., Nyakas, C., van der Zee, E. A., Schoemaker, R. G. Abstract: Peripheral surgery may evoke neuroinflammation, associated with neuronal damage and consequently mental health problems. However, anti-inflammatory treatment showed limited therapeutic efficacy. Preservation of neuron integrity during neuroinflammation, by targeting their protective collagen sheet, may provide an alternative strategy. Whole-body vibration (WBV) and exercise combine anti-inflammatory and collagen-increasing effects in the periphery. The present study aimed to explore the therapeutic efficacy of postoperative WBV and exercise on hippocampal neuroinflammation and collagen expression. Three months old male Wistar rats underwent abdominal surgery. Starting from one day after surgery, rats were submitted to WBV (10 min, once or twice daily, 30 Hz), running exercise (30 min, daily), or pseudo WBV/exercise, for two weeks. Rats were sacrificed and brain tissue was collected and processed for (immuno)histochemistry. Hippocampal microglia activity, total collagen content, and expression of fibrous and non-fibrous collagen subtypes were analysed. Surgery was associated with increased microglia activity in the CA1 area, which was only partly reversed by the interventions. Surgery specifically reduced total collagen expression in the CA1 area, which was restored by both WBV and exercise. Collagen I was absent in the hippocampal granular layers. The surgery-induced decrease in collagen III expression in the CA1 area was not affected by either WBV or exercise. However, surgery increased collagen III in the CA2 (ns), CA3 and DG. Exercise, and to a lower extent WBV, seemed to (partly) reverse this effect. Collagen IV expression was not altered by surgery, but increased by WBV. No significant effects were observed on collagen VI expression. WBV as well as exercise restored the surgery-induced declined collagen expression, while partly reversing microglia activation in the CA1 area. Moreover, effects on collagen appeared to be subtype- and region-specific, with overall similar effects of WBV and exercise. Nevertheless, the neuroprotective potential of postoperatively altered brain collagen needs further investigation. Copy rights belong to original authors. River Devereux joins Andrew on this episode of 'Doth Protest' for a helpful conversation about the Reformational understanding of Scripture's authority in relation to Creeds and Councils. River's recent work in the North American Anglican has generated great conversation and some controversy surrounding this topic. River's argument is: "our entire theological system necessitates the validity of private judgement" (from his article "To Follow One's Conscience: A Defense of True Protestantism"), and that church councils cannot claim to bind our conscience. This does not equate to, River says, a type of anarchic individualism nor does it, importantly, subject Scripture to our own reason (as we see in the case of the Enlightenment). There's no train in that coffin

June 3, 2022 — Senator Mike McGuire may have taken his victory lap a little too soon at a town hall about the Great Redwood Trail on Wednesday night. “Tonight we are able to announce — and this is late breaking,” he declared; “We have finally put a nail in the coffin of Big Coal. We have beat back Big Coal and the toxic coal train.” The nail may be in the coffin, but there's no train in it yet. McGuire was exulting about what he thought was the extinguished threat of an anonymous coal interest, registered in Wyoming, that was planning to buy the railroad from Willits to Eureka and use it to ship coal to Asia out of the Humboldt Bay. That would put an end to years of effort to turn the railroad into a recreational trail all the way from one Bay Area to the next, from Marin, through the Eel River canyon to Eureka. Sections of the trail have already been built in some communities alongside the tracks. But McGuire and trail advocates were looking forward to railbanking, or filling up the tracks with dirt and gravel, so the trail could be on top of the ready-made line. In order to do that, the federal Surface Board of Transportation would have to declare the tracks abandoned, and grant McGuire and his allies permission to railbank. Anyone who wanted to prevent that from happening was supposed to file their intent to buy the tracks with the Surface Transportation Board by May 31. But the next day, possibly while McGuire was thanking supporters for beating back Big Coal, the North Coast Railroad Company announced its intention to buy the entire 176 miles of track from Willits to Eureka, including appurtenant branch lines. Congressman Jared Huffman issued a statement Thursday, saying “their late application should disqualify them for further consideration. If not, the coalition of community opposition and their lack of transparency certainly will.” The only name associated with the Wyoming-based LLC is Robert A. Wimbish, the attorney, who apologized for his tardiness by explaining that it was “due to unforeseen vacation travel delays.” At a hearing last month, Huffman asked the Surface Board of Transportation Chair, Martin Oberman, where he stood on demanding transparency. “Would the Board require that entity to engage with the community and the public in an open and transparent way,” he began; “in other words, if they're secretive about who they are, about where their funding comes from, is that a factor that you would consider?” Oberman replied, “that's not a factor that's come before us. But I generally believe in full disclosure, and when we get those kinds of applications, we have the ability to insist on a more fulsome application of the facts, which would include revealing the basic financial structure of the entity and so forth. So the general answer to your question is yes, but it's very much case-specific.” But North Coast Railroad isn't the only company trying to buy part of the track. McGuire is also worried about another application, by Mendocino Railway, the parent company to the Skunk Train. Mendocino Railway wants to take over 13 miles of track from mile marker 139.5 to 152.5, from Willits to just past Highway 162, in order to ship gravel from Outlet Creek to Willits or Fort Bragg. However, there is a tunnel on that stretch of the track that long been out of operation due to a landslide. “So right now, if there was a rail company operating on this line, they couldn't even get to the coast because of this massive landslide that's blocking the track,” McGuire said. He added that he does “have some concerns with this application…number one, it's going to create a huge hole right in the heart of the Great Redwood Trail.” In addition, he estimated that, while the cost of railbanking could be $12,000 to $15,000 a mile, repairing the damaged track and the tunnel would cost tens of millions of dollars. Oberman told Huffman the Surface Board of Transportation doesn't concern itself too much with financial details. “You know, we generally are mandated by statute to make it easy for rail lines to come into existence,” he said. “That's one of our jobs. “There's a spectrum on how much we look at financial viability. Generally speaking, we take the view that the market will determine whether a rail line is viable.” Two other train-track oriented interests filed their intent to buy sections of the track, as well. The Timber Heritage Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the timber history of Humboldt County, wants to buy 18.5 miles from Eureka to Samoa, to offer excursion rides on restored timber crew cars. Pete Johnston, the Association's president, assured the Surface Board of Transportation that “Designation of this portion of the right of way is not in conflict with the larger Great Redwood Trail Agency's trail mission;” and he is willing to negotiate with the Agency “on any dual access or potential conflicts emerging to preserve corridor usage for both parties.” And Rail Runners Humboldt Bay in Arcata operates what it calls “a recreation concession for passengers to experience a pedal-powered rail vehicle for an excursion along Humboldt Bay.” In 2019, the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors, the mayor of Eureka, and the Humboldt Bay Harbor Recreation and Conservation District, all wrote letters in support of the concession. The owners demonstrated their financial viability by taking out a line of credit on their home and putting up part of a retirement account to buy 5.5 miles of line in Eureka and Samoa. In his remarks to Surface Transportation Board Chair Oberman, Huffman characterized the coal train as, “very unlikely to happen, certainly is at odds with the climate policies expressed by the Administration and Secretary Buttigieg. So I just hope these factors will be on your mind as you discharge your responsibility.”

Sam and Emma host Khiara M. Bridges, professor at Berkeley Law School, and Michelle Oberman, professor at Santa Clara University School of Law, to discuss the bombshell leaked SCOTUS brief that would overturn Roe V. Wade. Prof. Bridges first joins to clarify what it actually was that was leaked, looking at Justice Alito's first draft of, what he hopes to be, the majority opinion, whether that means the overturn is likely (it is very likely) and whether that can change (possibly), before they get into discussing the role of the leak as a tactic to ward off any defectors and soften the blowback against the right when it comes to the midterms. They then look to the institution itself, diving into the corroding trust that resulted in this leak, and Professor Bridges' take on the “originalist exercise” and the absurdity of lending extra credence to beliefs that were birthed from an incredibly exclusive population. Next, Khiara, Sam, and Emma look at Alito's take on of substantive due process and other 14th Amendment guarantees, particularly as bat signals for the right to go after Obergefell (same-sex marriage) and Lawrence (TX sodomy laws). Professor Oberman then joins to look to the future, as they dive into what repercussions we could see from a full federal ban on abortion, particularly when it comes to the iron law of prohibition, and what Black market abortions entail, before looking at the overwhelming child poverty that would further be inspired by these policies. They wrap up their discussion by noting the importance of centering the needs of the most marginalized and vulnerable when attempting to build a response, looking at HOW they'll be affected, and then building infrastructure from there. Sam and Emma also talk the Ohio and Indiana primaries, and watch Mitch McConnell's immediate pivot to blaming the left for the leak. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma are joined by Nomiki Konst as they cover Susan Collins' absolute SHOCK over yesterday's SCOTUS decision after years of her telling us that Justice Kavanaugh would NEVER vote this way, diving into the disastrous desire of centrists and Democrats to meet conservatives half-way on abortion, and touching on Ari Fleischer's appearance on Fox to rally against the misguided zealot that leaked this. This brings them to a conversation on the Right's obsession with the leak, and where the leak might've come from, before they touch on Tucker Carlson's fun redefinition of neoliberalism (hint: it's a smokescreen for race and gender politics), Josh Mandel capitalizes on Trump's idiocy to claim his endorsement of JD Vance as his own, and the crew dives into the New York State gerrymandering ruling. Thank you to Yvonne, Book Dragon, Tara, Rosalia, Dana and all the rest of you who gave us your input. Scary moments include: Roarke almost falling off of the top of the Statue of Liberty Eve and Roarke scrambling to get out of the Icove Building before it blew up Eve attacked by Isaac McQueen in "New York to Dallas" The entire squad was almost blown up by Lottie in "Obsession" Eve and Feeney being held hostage by Holloway Peabody in the shower overhearing Oberman and Garnett Eve trapped in a room with Alban in "Ceremony" Eve scrambling to get to Roarke before he used the VR glasses in "Rapture" Scariest Villans include: Rayleen Straffo Isaac McQueen Willow Mackie Gina McMillan John Blue Robert Lowell David Palmer Sylvester Yost. For spooky moments, we mostly look at the Novellas: Eve and Roarke first seeing the ghost of Bobbie Eve confronting the "vampire," Dorian (then sticking her finger in his glass of blood and sucking the blood off her finger...gross) Eve, Roarke and Isis performing the cleansing ritual in the hotel room where the ritual murder happened Eve being possessed, but also her seeing dead people. The doctor in Chaos changing into a monster in front of Eve. We also give our thoughts on what some of the characters in the books would dress up as for a Halloween party. Eve and Roarke as either Bonnie and Clyde or a Cop and a Convict, Mr and Mrs Mira would dress as something really classic like Robin Hood and Maid Marion and Peabody and McNab as Anna and Kristoff from Frozen? Eli Oberman—one of, if not the first, trans-identified students at Eugene Lang— talks about coming out as one of two very different trans children to a family of feminists, misogyny in transmasculine communities, the power of music and its ability to influence social change, and his spiritual connection to nature. As a breast cancer survivor living with depression, Eli explains the need for increased access to gender-affirming healthcare, not just in terms of trans-specific treatment, but overall. Welcome to Reimagining Company Culture, a series discussing emerging trends and priorities shaping the future of workplace culture and employee wellbeing. We highlight thought leaders who are constantly evolving their strategy and can provide insight to folks about how to address new business challenges.  AllVoices is on a mission to create safe, happy, and healthy workplaces for all, and we're excited to learn from experts who share our mission. In this episode of Reimagining Company Culture, we're chatting with Melanie Oberman, VP of People at Heap. Melanie enjoys building and scaling winning workplaces, making it easy for teams to do great workAbout AllVoicesIn today's workforce, people often don't feel empowered to speak up and voice their opinions about workplace issues, including harassment, bias, and other culture issues. This prevents company leadership from making necessary changes, and prevents people from feeling fulfilled, recognized, and included at work. At AllVoices, we want to change that by providing a completely safe, anonymous way for people to report issues directly to company leaders. This allows company leadership real transparency into what's happening in their companies—and the motivation to address issues quickly. Our goal is to help create safer, more inclusive companies. To learn more about AllVoices visit us at www.allvoices.co!

Paul Oberman competed in the 1992 Olympics as a member of the Australian National Water Polo team. He describes an unfortunate accident in which he severed his ulner nerve on his throwing arm. After several surgical procedures and rigorous rehabilitation efforts, Paul made it back to the national team, only to experience a shoulder dislocation that required a shoulder reconstruction only 2 months prior to the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Unfortunately, the shoulder operation precluded his participation in the games, a conclusion to his career that carried with it the disappointment and frustration of an unfulfilled dream. Oberman describes how he quickly came to terms with his injury and how the transition to coaching enabled him to give back to the sport. He suggests that injury is a test of what the athlete wants out of their sport and that if an athlete gets “knocked down” it's helpful to reflect on: “how, ‘what', ‘why' and ‘who' are going to help you get back up?” For further assistance dealing with the challenges of injury or for performance enhancement consulting visit: podlogconsulting.com --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/leslie-podlog/support
