The brain has a reward system and a punishment system. Nature has created chemical rewards for engagement with things, that move us in the general direction of adaption and things that serve our wellness. Nature punishes us for involvement in and with things that are not good for us and don't serve our wellness. Dopamine is a feel good molecule that is essential for Growth Mindset, pursuit of goals and wellbeing of all sorts. Growth Mindset Theory, hinges on the fact that there is a huge connection between the pleasure or reward systems in the brain and action-based pursuit of goals, not just achieving a goal. We have two reward systems in the brain; pleasure from within, like love, peace and happiness which is derived from molecules like serotonin and oxytocin. The other is the dopamine reward system, a driving force in human evolution, which is secreted as much en route to rewards or goals, as it is in the achievement of rewards or goals. When we can subjectively tap into the potential of this dopamine circuit at the friction or action stage of pursuing a goal, it amplifies that pathway of reward in pursuit of goals, in our brain. This is an absolute game changer when it comes to engaging with anything challenging or of long duration. Growth Mindset is the attachment of these reward systems to the effort or friction process and not just to achieving a goal. Reward Prediction Error Theory, proffers that if you can dose the dopamine subjectively as you go through the pursuit of something and consciously appreciate even greater amounts of dopamine when you reach the desired goal, you reinforce that circuit and that tendency to celebrate small wins, which is hugely motivational and can actually be a precursor to engaging neuro plasticity. Over time therefore, these circuits become hardwired and automatic. This is the essence of Growth Mindset. Growth Mindset is about attaching reward to the fact that you're taking action steps that are generally heading in the right direction. The more you can reward the action process, the better you become at building the neural circuits that help you to lean into anything challenging, over essentially any duration and that is Growth Mindset in a nutshell. The intersection where journalism meets beer is a great thing indeed, especially when it comes to a very specific beer man by the name of Jonathan Shikes, AKA the Colorado Beer Man. His passion for the Denver beer scene is evidenced in his decades long journalism career at Westword, Denver's alt newspaper, with a focus on beer. A self-proclaimed history buff, Jonathan took his love for beer and journalism a step further. He wrote a book. We sat down with Jonathan at one of the oldest known breweries in Denver, Tivoli Brewing Company, to talk about his new book, Denver Beer: A History of Mile High Brewing and his foray into the craft beer scene from beginning to current day. You could say it started out as a beer boom...a bust (prohibition)...and another boom! There are back-to-back monologues on today’s episode. The two episodes consist of the same material, just said a little different. The first take Michael was told was too aggressive with too many F bombs, so he re-recorded but still left it up on the tail end of the podcast. The double header podcast today was inspired by a film Michael recently re-watched called, “Boom Bust Boom”. Michael talks about Hyman Minsky’s “financial instability hypothesis”. Minsky said that there is instability in capitalism and if capitalism was eliminated, that would help eliminate bubbles. Minsky believed that offsetting the economy is how you eliminate instability. This is where the government came up with zero interest rates, and in some places, negative interest rates. Due to the Minsky mentality, economists think they can control the markets and stop human nature from happening. Michael ties his documentary film into the discussion and describes the insight he got during ’08 when he happened to be filming. Trend following strategies and behavioral economics have these characteristics in common: 1. People will never be rational. 2. Markets will always trend up, down and sideways. 3. You can’t predict trends. 4. There are ways to make money even though numbers 1-3 are set in stone and will not change.
