Reform UK triumphed in May's local elections, winning many more council seats up for grabs than the other major parties. Behind the scenes the party has gone through major changes. Millionaire businessman and donor Zia Yusuf was appointed Chairman last summer, and has been credited with professionalising the party. The son of Sri Lankan immigrants, he made his money co-founding a luxury concierge business, before moving into politics; and all before the age of 40. But where do his ambitions lie beyond being chairman? And where does the future of the party lie beyond the central figure of Nigel Farage? In this episode of Profile, Stephen Smith explores the life, career and journey of the man some say is responsible for Reform UK's growing success. Hi everyone! We recently surveyed our audience and learned that many of you would like to see more video. So, we're kicking off a new run of video episodes, beginning with our interview featuring John Cleese—actor, writer, comedian, and author of Creativity: A Short and Cheerful Guide. You can watch the interview on our Substack, or on Youtube. Enjoy! Original intro The Ministry of Silly Walks. The Cheese Shop. French Taunting. If you haven't seen any of these Monty Python sketches before, do us a favor and go watch one or two of them. You'll discover—or re-discover—why our guest for this episode is a creative comic legend. John Cleese starred in and co-wrote the award-winning series Fawlty Towers, was nominated for an Academy Award for the screenplay of A Fish Called Wanda, and even has a species of lemur named after him (Cleese's wooly lemur, Avahi cleesei). He's also an expert on the creative process, and so if you're looking for a new framework to level-up your own workflow, his book Creativity: A Short and Cheerful Guide is a great resource. We talk with John about his new book, and also about creative collaboration in the midst of friction, how to be comfortable with ambiguity, and creating boundaries of space and time to get in a creative mode. We also get to ask him a question that's been bugging us ever since we first watched Monty Python and The Holy Grail. These days, we can all use a little more laughter in our lives. We hope our interview with John sparks some joy, and leaves you with some new creative tools. Thanks for listening. Bio John Cleese is an English actor, comedian, writer, and film producer. He achieved success at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and as a scriptwriter and performer on The Frost Report. In the late 1960s, he co-founded Monty Python, the comedy troupe responsible for the sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus and the four Monty Python films, And Now for Something Completely Different, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Life of Brian, and The Meaning of Life. In the mid-1970s, Cleese and his first wife, Connie Booth, co-wrote and starred in the British sitcom Fawlty Towers. Later, he co-starred with Kevin Kline, Jamie Lee Curtis, and former Python colleague Michael Palin in A Fish Called Wanda and Fierce Creatures. He also starred in Clockwise, and has appeared in many other films, including two James Bond films, two Harry Potter films, and the last three Shrek films. He is also the author of Creativity: A Short and Cheerful Guide. *** This ad-supported episode is available to everyone. Well we have some catching up to do so let's get into it. Dragon's Dogma 2 has taken over the gaming sphere and I want to give my thoughts on my pretty deep experience with the game. Unfortunately there will be no Baldur's Gate 3 DLC and that breaks my heart. Some new looks at Marvel 1943 and Dragon Ball Sparking Zero. Apple is being sued to break up their Apple Market. Assassin's Creed Jade has been delayed a year although I am not sure if anyone even cares. Toys for Bob has been let go with an agreement with Microsoft. A small look at the all digital Xbox Series X. And for the main show let's talk about Gearbox breaking out of Embracer and Connie Booth has found a new working spot at EA. As always we end with Date Updates and What's Queued Up. That is all for this week and I will be getting back to more Dragon's Dogma and my life in general, thank you so much for watching and gifting your time and until next week! Various leaks (and our own sources) have long-indicated the arrival of a so-called PlayStation 5 Pro console this calendar year, and now new reports have given us a great idea of what this yet-unannounced machine can do. Similar to 2016's PlayStation 4 Pro, PS5's Pro model largely keeps its CPU functionality in place, instead focusing on GPU-centric graphical boosts that promise to please the discerning eye. Combined with mysterious proprietary upscaling technologies and AI-related features, it sounds like PlayStation 5 Pro will be a beastly machine when it comes to aesthetics. But what about the all-important framerate? The news may be less stellar. And the price? Well, that remains to be seen. We discuss. Other news this week includes continuing and seemingly never-ending drama at Sony's great unforced acquisition error Bungie, stalled sales numbers for Sony's struggling PSVR2 hardware, exceptional performance for Helldivers 2 on the US market, the beginning of the end (or maybe more like the end of the end) of Kotaku, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Between multiple cancellations on one end and Helldivers 2 on the other, what is our current assessment of PlayStation's embryonic games-as-a-service initiative? Does Resident Evil 5's setting and antagonists make the game truly un-remakable? Has 2024's schedule of strong releases unabashedly picked up right where 2023 left off? Has our show successfully infiltrated Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, corrupting its personnel? Please keep in mind that our timestamps are approximate, and will often be slightly off due to dynamic ad placement. 0:00:00 - Intro 0:18:17 - Sacred Symbols Military Base 0:20:27 - Use Sacred to make people think you're busy 0:27:44 - Boars Heads superiority 0:36:25 - Chris Chan catch-up 0:42:06 - concerning notification? 0:51:22 - Connie Booth goes to EA 0:59:09 - New Helldivers developments 1:03:09 - Palworld looking to release on PlayStation 1:09:07 - Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra 1:18:18 - Halo co-creator's thoughts on EA 1:24:50 - Callisto Protocol spin-off 1:29:01 - Tales series character artist has pass away 1:30:22 - What We've Been Playing 1:41:50 - PS5 Pro leaks 2:14:17 - PSVR2 stops production 2:43:33 - Trouble at Bungie 3:06:32 - Monthly sales data 3:07:56 - Kotaku EIC resigns 3:15:17 - Community Managers 3:23:37 - What's the best handheld console? 3:36:28 - Should Resident Evil 5 be re-written? 3:47:28 - 2024 best year ever for games? 3:53:25 - Gut check on Sony live service games 4:01:21 - What games need to go? A new development kit has been certified for Xbox in South Korea! With leaks showing an all digital Series X on the way, this originally felt like a news story you brush by and not much else. That was the case until we learned a key bit of information that flipped the conversation on its head: This certification couldn't be for a digital Series X. So, what is it? The last certification seen for Xbox hardware was with the Series X around five months ahead of its launch. We know Sarah Bond recently stated that Xbox has committed to more hardware in the future. Could it finally be the Xbox handheld set to launch this holiday? Naturally, the Dukes are giddy about this concept and dive deep. We also lament the state that Battlefront Classic Collection has launched in, mull over the state of PocketPair, enjoy Xbox's 4D chess play with Sea Of Thieves newest SKUs, and dive into the latest changes at Bungie and Blizzard. John Cleese visits Google to discuss his book “So, Anyway…”, a chronicle of his early life and career. John Cleese's huge comedic influence has stretched across generations; his sharp irreverent eye and the unique brand of physical comedy he perfected now seem written into comedy's DNA. In this memoir, Cleese recalls his humble beginnings in a sleepy English town, his early comedic days at Cambridge University with future Monty Python partner Graham Chapman, and the founding of the landmark comedy troupe that would propel him to worldwide renown. Cleese was just days away from graduating Cambridge and setting off on a law career when he was visited by two BBC executives, who offered him a job writing comedy for radio. That fateful moment propelled him down a different path, cutting his teeth writing for stars like David Frost and Peter Sellers, and eventually joining the five other Pythons to pioneer a new kind of comedy that prized invention, silliness, and absurdity. Along the way, he found his first true love with the actress Connie Booth and transformed himself from a reluctant performer to a world class actor and back again. Intern uro og Sony! Bungie fyrer 100 medarbejdere! - Sony forsvarer PS Plus prisstigninger - Xbox har rekord godt kvartalsregnskab - Stor chefrokade hos Xbox - Xbox Partner Preview reaktioner - Insomniacs Spider-Man og Wolverine spil foregår i samme univers - Xbox blokerer uautoriserede accessories - Skull and Bones udskudt igen - Nintendo Switch dominere konsolkrigen - Nintendo tager spændende patent - Super Mario Bros. Wonder er hurtigst sælgende Mario spil nogensinde Og meget, meget mere.

On this episode of Video Games 2 the MAX, Sean is joined by Marc again after he missed the last three weeks. Sean's been playing the newly released Alan Wake II and has some early impressions of the game (Spoiler Free), also, he has thoughts on the new character Saga, if the game reaches the heights of Survival Horror, and how her gameplay differs from Alan's. Sean also has more thoughts on Super Mario Bros. Wonder as well. Marc's been playing Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and Assassin's Creed Mirage. Does the new AC game do the right thing by returning to its roots? Or is it a case of too much in the other direction? And does the dynamic duo in Spider-Man 2 truly deliver? There's also been some big changes at Microsoft as some promotions have occurred to help improve Xbox's future. Not to mention, their first-ever Xbox Partner Preview happened on Wednesday as well. Should it be compared to a Sony State of Play? Speaking of Sony, the major departure of Connie Booth has led to a lot of conversation about PlayStation's future and if the "Games as Service" direction truly is the correct one. Plus thoughts on the detachable PS5 disc drive requiring an internet connection to pair it, Ubisoft possibly delaying Star Wars Outlaws, and more! You can also watch this episode in video form on the W2M Network Youtube Channel, please give us a like, comment on the episode, and give the channel a subscribe and follow as well: https://youtube.com/live/Z7COccphYZARun of Show:START & Housekeeping ----------------------- Games We Are Playing -----------------------Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (Marc) Assassin's Creed Mirage (Marc)Saints Row (2022) (Marc) Super Mario Bros. Plot:In AD 932, King Arthur and his squire, Patsy, travel Britain searching for men to join the Knights of the Round Table. Along the way, Arthur debates whether swallows could carry coconuts, passes through a town infected with the Black Death, recounts receiving Excalibur from the Lady of the Lake to two anarcho-syndicalist peasants, defeats the Black Knight and observes an impromptu witch trial. He recruits Sir Bedevere the Wise, Sir Lancelot the Brave, Sir Galahad the Pure, and Sir Robin the Not-Quite-So-Brave-as-Sir-Lancelot, along with their squires and Robin's minstrels. Arthur leads the knights to Camelot, but, after a musical number, changes his mind, deeming it "a silly place". As they turn away, God appears and orders Arthur to find the Holy Grail. Arthur and his knights arrive at a castle occupied by French soldiers, who claim to have the Grail and taunt the Britons, driving them back with a barrage of barnyard animals. Bedevere concocts a plan to sneak in using a Trojan Rabbit, but no one hides inside it, and the Britons are forced to flee when it is flung back at them. Arthur decides the knights should go their separate ways to search for the Grail.A modern-day historian filming a documentary on the Arthurian legends is killed by an unknown knight on horseback, triggering a police investigation. Arthur and Bedevere are given directions by an old man and attempt to satisfy the strange requests of the dreaded Knights Who Say "Ni!" Sir Robin avoids a fight with a Three-Headed Knight by running away while the heads are arguing amongst themselves. Sir Galahad is led by a grail-shaped beacon to Castle Anthrax, which is occupied exclusively by young women, who wish to be punished for misleading him, but he is unwillingly "rescued" by Lancelot. Lancelot receives an arrow-shot note from Swamp Castle. Believing the note is from a lady being forced to marry against her will, he storms the castle and slaughters several members of the wedding party, only to discover the note is from an effeminate prince. Arthur and his knights regroup and are joined by three new knights, as well as Brother Maynard and his monk brethren. They meet Tim the Enchanter, who directs them to a cave where the location of the Grail is said to be written. The entrance to the cave is guarded by the Rabbit of Caerbannog. Underestimating it, the knights attack, but the Rabbit easily kills Bors, Gawain and Ector. Arthur uses the "Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch", provided by Brother Maynard, to destroy the creature. Inside the cave, they find an inscription from Joseph of Arimathea, directing them to Castle Aarrgh. An animated cave monster devours Brother Maynard, but Arthur and the knights escape after the animator unexpectedly suffers a fatal heart attack. The knights approach the Bridge of Death, where the bridge-keeper demands they answer three questions in order to pass or else be cast into the Gorge of Eternal Peril. Lancelot easily answers simple questions and crosses. Robin is defeated by an unexpectedly difficult question, and Galahad fails an easy one; both are magically flung into the gorge. When Arthur asks for clarification on an obscure question about swallows, the bridge-keeper cannot answer and is himself thrown into the gorge. Arthur and Bedevere cannot find Lancelot, unaware that he has been arrested by police investigating the historian's death. The pair reach Castle Aarrgh, but find it occupied by the French soldiers. After being repelled by showers of manure, they summon an army of knights and prepare to assault the castle. As the army charges, the police arrive, arrest Arthur and Bedevere for the murder of the historian and break the camera, ending the film. TOP 51: Done on an incredibly small budget, the Pythons found funding from an unlikely sources—rock bands. Groups like Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, and Pink Floyd helped get the money up for the production, with a portion of the funds coming from the Floyd's album “The Dark Side of the Moon.” This is a trend that would continue later with The Life of Brian, when a large portion of the funding came from former Beatle George Harrison. When Harrison was asked why he funded the film, he responded “Because I wanted to see it.” 2: The film also represents the directorial debuts of both Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam, who decided that anyone named Terry got to direct the Pythons' first film. Attempting to co-direct at the same time led to conflicts, so the Terrys split up the responsibilities with Jones handling the actors while Gilliam worked on the cinematography. They'd go on to direct the remaining Python films together and Jones would additionally direct Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, while Gilliam's lengthy directorial career would include such artistic classics as The Fisher King, Brazil, Time Bandits, Twelve Monkeys, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, and more. 3: The vicious Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog had parts of its fur dyed red to represent the blood of the knights that it spilt with its large, pointy teeth. Unfortunately, the dye used wouldn't wash out afterwards and the rabbit's owner was furious. 4: By the time the Pythons actually got around to doing the credits, they'd run out of money. As a result, the credits were very simple and Palin decided to spice them up a bit by adding the Swedish subtitles and llama references. When the film was shown for the first time at Cannes, firemen rushed in at the end of the credits to evacuate the audience due to a bomb scare. The crowd didn't leave at first because they thought it was part of the show. 5: n part due to the low budget, Chapman and Cleese did all their own stunts for the Black Knight scene. The two used heavy swords and some acrobatics for added realism. Connie Booth had brought her and Cleese's young daughter to the filming, who during the fight turned to her mum and said “Daddy doesn't like that man, does he?” **TRIPLE LINDY AWARD** **REVIEW AND RATING**TreyChrisStephen 1.5Tucker 3 TOP 5Stephen:1 Breakfast club2 Saving Private Ryan3 Ghostbusters4 Sandlot5 Color out of space Chris:1. sandlots2. John Cleese is one of Britain's most celebrated cultural icons. The actor, comedian, screenwriter and producer is best known for Monty Python and for playing Basil in Fawlty Towers, co-written with his first wife, Connie Booth. With a career spanning over half a century, Cleese realised he could make people laugh before he'd reached his teenage years.

The Ministry of Silly Walks. After everything that happened in 2020, we can all use a little more laughter in our lives. We hope our interview with John sparks some joy, and leaves you with some new creative tools. Thanks for listening. Takeaways: How John's childhood influences the way he approaches creativity Why John uses writing to explore ideas What “closed mode” and “open mode” are (and how they relate to convergent and divergent modes of thinking).

Hey, thanks for listening. Have you subscribed to the bookmark newsletter? A fortnightly email with book reviews and ideas of what you should be reading next. Click here to subscribe. About the book We can all be more creative. John Cleese shows us how. Creativity is usually regarded as a mysterious, rare gift that only a few possess. John Cleese begs to differ, and in this short, immensely practical and often very amusing guide he shows it's a skill that anyone can acquire. Drawing on his lifelong experience as a writer, he shares his insights into the nature of the creative process, and offers advice on how to get your own inventive juices flowing. Not only does he explain the way your mind works as you search for inspiration, he also shows that, regardless of the task you've set yourself, you can learn to be better at coming up with a promising idea, refining it and knowing when you're ready to act on it. We can all unlock new reserves of creativity within ourselves. John Cleese shows us how. Source: https://www.penguin.com.au/books/creativity-9781786332257 About the author John Cleese was born in 1939 in Weston-Super-Mare. He studied Law at Cambridge University and has enjoyed a successful career in comedy, theatre and film and television. He achieved success at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and as a scriptwriter and performer on The Frost Report. In the late 1960s, he co-founded Monty Python, the comedy troupe responsible for the sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus and the four Monty Python films: And Now for Something Completely Different, Monty Python and the HolyGrail, Life of Brian and The Meaning of Life. In the mid-1970s, Cleese and his first wife, Connie Booth, co-wrote and starred in the British sitcom Fawlty Towers. Later, he co-starred with Kevin Kline, Jamie Lee Curtis and former Python colleague Michael Palin in A Fish Called Wanda and Fierce Creatures. He also starred in Clockwise, and has appeared in many other films, including two James Bond films, two Harry Potter films, and the last three Shrek films. Source: https://www.penguin.com.au/books/creativity-9781786332257 Big idea #1 — You can learn to be creative (…but you probably won't be taught it in school) Creativity is not something that's discussed much in school, certainly when John Cleese was at school. There, the focus tends to be on grades, logic, on reason, on analysis, and getting the right answer. It was only when he arrived at Cambridge University and he joined Footlights, that he realized that he was actually creative. This came as quite a surprise to him because it was never something he considered previously. But he immersed himself in the creative field of writing in particular, because it was fun, and he liked the people he was doing it with. He was studying to become a lawyer, so pursuing a creative vocation was never something he intended. But because of this experience of joining Footlights, spending time with people he liked, and going through that creative process, he ended up learning to be more creative. He surrounded himself with other people, he tested what made people laugh, and he put himself out there with monthly smoker (open mic) sessions. Big idea #2 — Slow down Early on in his writing career, John noticed this phenomenon of coming up with ideas overnight. He would get stuck on something in the evening, go to bed, wake up and generally have it solved, or at least know the next step to be able to progress and move it forward. He continued to use this particular technique throughout his career, and still does today. Once he lost a whole sketch he'd written down. Much to the annoyance of his co-writer, and he had to rewrite it from memory. When he eventually found the original version, he realized that the rewrite was actually better because he'd mulled on it a little more, he'd slept on it, and the idea had evolved for the better as a result. He references a particular study about creative architects, or what makes some architects more creative than others. One of the trends they found is that the more creative architects will delay decisions for as long as they were allowed, which gave them the time to play and to explore their ideas further. He goes on to talk about how we have to get comfortable with the discomfort of leaving things open and incomplete, in order to make them better. (Something I definitely need to remind myself) This also links to a later idea in the book about getting a second opinion. We should allow time for that extra layer of feedback, and the power of collaboration, to help take your idea to that next level. Again, it adds a little bit more time and forces us to slow down, but it will mean a better outcome in the end. Big idea #3 — Get your panic in early In this little section on getting your panic in early, John talks about the benefit of a bit of panic. It gives you energy, so you might as well use it, and use it early. You can harness that panic to get something down on paper — even if it's just scrappy notes that are going to go into the bin later — but it creates some much needed momentum that is necessary to move forward. Once you've made this first panic-driven move(!), you can feel better about making that first tiny, tiny step, and then get onto the important questions like who you're writing for, or whatever the context is for what you're creating. In a separate section in the book, he says that creativity isn't an emotion, it is a frame of mind. And therefore we need to prepare ourselves to be creative, and not be worried about, or distracted by, other things. So this idea of getting your panic in early, getting all those weird negative, messy feelings out of the way early on in the process, will mean you can move on to the more important things that you actually need to do to create something. ____________________ Let's connect LinkedIn Instagram See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of Casual Chats, Patricia and Arun Mehta from The Arun Mehta Show discuss about the 1975 BBC sitcom Fawlty Towers starring John Cleese, Prunella Scales, Connie Booth, and Andrew Sachs. The plot is about a disgruntled hotel owner named Basil Fawlty, his wife Sybil, the waitress and assistant Polly Sherman, and the Spanish waiter and bellboy Manuel who work at a run down hotel named Faulty Towers and have to content with a lot of crazy situations from health inspectors to Germans to Americans. Fawlty Towers has been considered to be one of the greatest British sitcoms ever made and the inspiration for many other sitcoms from Father Ted, Cheers, and Third Rock from the Sun. Very similar to Father Ted, this is the first time that Patricia is watching a show that Arun is very familiar with. How well does Fawlty Towers hold up? In what is certainly the most comedically inclined Extra Milestone yet, I am joined by my very close personal friend Tyler Chambers to discuss a pair of classics within the genre. We begin with a lengthy rundown of Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam’s 1975 cult favorite Monty Python and the Holy Grail, complete with behind-the-scenes stories, details we’ve noticed over the years, our personal experiences with the movie, analyses of the film’s comedic stylings, and revisits of our favorite sequences. Then we move on to John Landis’s 1980 musical road comedy The Blues Brothers. We discuss the film’s story structure, cast, presentation, and deadpan sense of humor, as well as how all of those things compare and contrast surprisingly well with Holy Grail. Afterward, we both give a recommendation to pair with each movie, some much more unexpected than others! NOTE: Due to a variety of unfortunate technical errors, the sound quality of this episode is a bit worse than usual. Sorry about that! Sitcom Showdown episode one features Steve's first selection, the Fawlty Towers classic 'Basil the Rat'. Jeffers prepares himself to undergo the strain of watching the world's most stressful sitcom. Surely putting this masterwork from John Cleese and Connie Booth into the Hall of Fame is a slam dunk? It seems highly likely ... but join in the fun to find out for sure! This review first appeared as a part of the Movies First podcast. Stream episodes on demand from www.bitesz.com (mobile friendly). In this episode we take a look at the live stage version of Fawlty Towers, the much loved TV comedy, which is touring Australia and New Zealand. Fawlty Towers Live is based on the BBC TV series written by John Cleese and Connie Booth. It's been adapted for the stage by John Cleese, with direction by Caroline J. Ranger and set design by Liz Ascroft. Manic, snobbish, condescending, sycophantic and rude, Basil Fawlty is without doubt one of the funniest, most iconic and most memorable British comedy characters ever written. This original adaptation and all-new Australian cast, brings all your beloved characters to life onstage in an unmissable evening of hilarity! John Lahr talks to Michael Berkeley about his passion for the American Songbook, his award-winning biographies of Tennessee Williams and Joe Orton, and his father, the actor Bert Lahr, who was the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz. Described by the playwright Edward Albee as 'the greatest drama critic of my generation', John was for 22 years chief critic and profile writer for the New Yorker. Then, in 2002, John Lahr the drama critic became John Lahr the dramatist - and the first drama critic ever to win a Tony Award when he wrote actress Elaine Stritch's one-woman show, Elaine Stritch at Liberty. He chooses music from that show, a song sung by his father, a Theolonious Monk track which reminds him of his wife Connie Booth, and he ends with the joy of Mozart's Jupiter Symphony. Producer: Jane Greenwood A Loftus Production for BBC Radio 3.

Fawlty Towers Join Meds and Kell as they talk about this fabulous British Comedy Fawlty Towers. Written and performed by John Cleese and Connie Booth, Fawlty Towers is now over 34 years old and still going strong. Only two series were made and its a formula that comedians such as Ricky Gervais have taken upon themselves to keep their own comedy fresh. Also starring Andrew Sachs and Prunella Scales the team created a wonderful programme that has never been beaten. The premise of the show is centred around Basil Fawlty played by Cleese a hotel owner who is dominated by his wife Sybil and has an amazing disregard for anyone who is below what he classes as 'the best class'. A fantastic comedy that is worth not only hearing about here but must be viewed to get the ultimate pleasure of Cleese and Booths writing.
