It's our 300th episode and we honor a listener request for this milestone. The Fisher King (1991) could not be made today–not because of politics or cultural changes, but because it's impossible to neatly classify. A love story, a tale of redemption, a disturbing study of psychosis, a romantic comedy, and an Artthurian quest, the film combines genres in ways that some audiences–or at least producers–might not appreciate. But the film is hilarious, frightening, and ultimately affirming of its two lead characters' decisions to abandon their despair and find meaning in their lives. Terry Gilliam is one of the world's most imaginative and original directors. He first made his mark more than 50 years ago, with the animated opening sequence of Monty Python's Flying Circus, when a giant foot stomped on the titles with a burst of flatulence. That spirit of mischief, fun and creative adventure has informed many of his films: they include Time Bandits, Brazil, The Fisher King and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, working with stars such as Matt Damon, Uma Thurman, Brad Pitt and Robin Williams. He'd be the first to admit that life as a film maker can be complicated: he's faced natural disasters, budget overruns and clashes with studio executives. But he has no plans to retire: now in his 85th year he's working on a new film called Carnival at the End of Days starring Johnny Depp as Satan and Jeff Bridges as God.Terry's list of musical passions includes Richard Strauss, Berlioz and Delius.

Two movies here where audiences went in expecting one thing, and might just have got another. 1991's The Fisher King though for a time was going to be a Disney movie, before the studio decided it was too dark. Directors such as Steven Spielberg and James Cameron were mentioned, before Terry Gilliam - coming off the back of a commercial flop - decided to break all three of his conditions for taking on a film. Director Joe Carnahan meanwhile was coming off his big studio movie - The A-Team - when he decided he wanted to pivot to something smaller. He chose The Grey, a film he developed, and which would be sold off the back of imagery of Liam Neeson getting ready to punch a wolf. That, though, wasn't the full picture... Our "In The March Of Madness" month continues as, this week, we're going to be talking about Terry Gilliam's 1991 film, The Fisher King. Jeff Bridges plays Jack Lucas who was once a rich, famous and egotistical New York City shock jock. Jack goes on a downward spiral, both personally and professionally, after a glib comment he makes to one of his regular callers results in that caller going on a murder spree at a trendy downtown bar. Three years later, when Jack hits rock bottom and is close to suicide, he is saved by a seemingly crazy and homeless man named Parry (Robin WIlliams). Parry does have mental health issues, namely hallucinations centered around the story of the Fisher King, and an obsession with obtaining the Holy Grail. After Jack learns of Parry's own background and the reason he got to where he is, Jack feels the need to be part of Parry's salvation. Listen in and hear what we thought of it.

Comics, like cinema, is an eminently modern medium. And as with cinema, looking closely at it can swiftly acquaint us with the profound weirdness of modernity. Do that in the context of a discussion on Charles Burns' comic masterpiece Black Hole, and you're guaranteed a memorable Weird Studies episode. Black Hole was serialized over ten years beginning in 1995, and first released as a single volume by Pantheon Books in 2005. Like all masterpieces, it shines both inside and out: it tells a captivating story, a "weirding" of the teenage romance genre, while also revealing something of the inner workings of comics as such. In this episode, Phil and JF explore the singular wonders of a medium that, thanks to artists like Burns, has rightfully ascended from the trash stratum (https://www.weirdstudies.com/20) to the coveted empyrean of artistic respectability—without losing its edge. In which the Mister and Monsters join me in reviewing THE FISHER KING (1991), from writer Richard LaGravenese, the film is directed by Terry Gilliam.   A narcissistic radio host, Jack Lucas (Jeff Bridges), has it all and is riding high on a wave of fame, success and adulation. However, one day his reckless words inadvertently inspire a tragic event, plunging him into a self-destructive spiral. He crosses paths with a mentally ill man, Parry (a luminescent Robin Williams) and together they embark on a surreal and transformative journey to find meaning, redemption and recovery.  The film clocks in at 2 h and 17 m, is rated R and is to buy/rent on Prime Video. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. #TheFisherKing  #RichardLaGravenese  #TerryGilliam  #JeffBridges  #JackLucas  #RobinWilliams  #Parry  #MercedesRuehl  #Anne  #AmandaPlummer  #Luydia  @TurnerClassicMovies  @PrimeVideo  #FridayFamilyFilmNight         Opening intro music: GOAT by Wayne Jones, courtesy of YouTube Audio Library --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jokagoge/support

Jennifer is in NYC, but we were able to find a way to do our podcast from both coasts.  In this one, we begin by welcoming the folks from Alex Ferrari's podcast "Next Level Soul" who found us after listening to my recent podcast on Alex's channel. Jennifer talks a little about her work, her journey to the work, and how she works with law enforcement pro bono on a daily basis.  (I have met some of the folks she works with, and in the book ARCHITECTURE OF THE AFTERLIFE one of them did a guided meditation with me.) Then we discuss a few of the guided meditations I've done recently, including one where a person saw Jim Henson in a vivid dream, so during her meditation, we asked him to come forward and answer a couple of questions about his journey. He talked about being connected to his family, and mentioned his daughter and son who have carried on his work. He also spoke of how people can access loved ones offstage if they need to. Then I asked some questions about a recent unusual event - son and wife were walking in the park playing "20 questions" (where you think of an object or phrase or person, and the other person has 20 tries to guess it). And as they were walking past a slightly schizophrenic (not sure if he was or wasn't, but he had no filter when he spoke) fellow on the part bench, said aloud the phrase he was thinking of. "In and Out Burger animal style."  (Which only people in LA know what that means).  Jennifer said that the fellow wasn't an intuitive per se, but that it was Robin Williams who popped that answer into his head. Which is mind bending, since Robin played the Fisher King so well in the feature film where he played one of those savants. As noted, Robin does show up often in people's sessions, and lately I've heard his name quite a bit. Which led to a question about an event in a library where a friend picked up a book and heard someone tell them that was the "same book they had checked out of the library many times."  And a closer look at the left over page where they used to stamp the data of each checkout, showed that the time stamp of the date (about 16 weeks in 1967) corresponded when this person "Carlos" was reported to be researching in this very library. At some point Jennifer "guessed" the name of the fellow, and before she could say that name, I said "That's correct" realizing she'd guessed it (without hearing it.) We did talk about this fellow for a bit - but I was recounting recent articles, and not asking him directly about the accuracy of those articles, so I decided to leave it just at the name "Carlos."  (Could be Santana, could be the Jackal, could be someone else entirely.) I'm not trying to be cagey, I just want to point out - anyone can do this, do the same thing. Jennifer saw Wayne Dyer show up - someone she met, revered, and confirmed who this person was, and then my old boss Robert Towne stopped by, and because he was the most poetic person I have known - asked him to talk about his experience on the flipside. I said something like "Well you probably don't miss much on the flipside" because people report we can create anything. And he corrected me, and then spoke eloquently about all the different things that are difficult to create on the other side that we choose to incarnate to experience. (Sea air with salt, the touch of a cheek, a hug, some spectacular sunsets) - he says that "all those colors are there, but it's different to experience them on the planet." It's about as poetic as one can be on a podcast. Enjoy, and please be kind to someone today who needs it.

It is common in folklore and fairy tales that there is a theme of a land under a spell, which could only be broken by asking the right question. The Grail Question is the question to be asked of the wounded Fisher King in order to break the enchantment under which he and his lands are held, by the quest knight. In Perceval, by Chrétien de Troyes, the question is: Who does the Grail serve? The question is really twofold: What is the Grail? Whom does it serve? At first Perceval did not achieve the Grail simply because he forgot to ask this question, or didn't dare to since his tutor, Gornemant of Gohort, had warned him not to talk too much. He did not make the same mistake twice and asked the question needed when he visited the castle for the second time and completes the adventure. Wolfram von Eschenbach's version of the question is: What ails you [the Grail King]? In Diu Crône, by Heinrich von dem Türlin, the Grail company were in a state of living dead and were freed when Gawain roared For the sake of God and His majesty, tell me the meaning of this large assembly and miracle! Gawain partially heals the Fisher King's land by asking about the Bleeding Lance, but he falls asleep before he can ask about the Grail, in the First Continuation of Chrétien's Perceval. --- SourcesParzival | Wolfram von Eschenbach, 1200-1210Perlesvaus | Early 13th centuryDiu Crône | Heinrich von dem Türlin, c. 1230Didot – Perceval | c. 1220-1230Third Continuation of Chrétien's Perceval | Manessier, c. 1230Perceval, or Le Conte del Graal | Chrétien de Troyes, late 12th century https://www.monsalvat.no/question.htm https://nightbringer.se/the-legend-of-king-arthur/a-z-arthurian-events/grail-question/ Glorification | The Final Frontier Boldly Go Where Only the One Man Has Gone Before! Yes, questions can be propositional. A propositional question is a question that asks about the truth or falsehood of a statement, or the existence or non-existence of something. a proposition that follows from (and is often appended to) one already proved “Who do men say that I am?” “‘What are you, O great mountain [of obstacles]? The Fisher King is a figure in Arthurian legend, the last in a long line of British kings tasked with guarding the Holy Grail. The Fisher King is both the protector and physical embodiment of his lands, but a wound renders him infertile and his kingdom barren.[1] Unable to walk or ride a horse, he is sometimes depicted as spending his time fishing while he awaits a "chosen one" who can heal him. The healing of the wound to his groin depends upon the completion of the hero-knight's task. Percival asks the Fisher King the healing question, which cures the wound. The nature of the question differs between Perceval and Parzival, but the central theme is that the Fisher King can be healed only if Percival asks "the question". 1. Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

This week, a bone Vervoid joins in the fun as we travel back in time to Wales in 2015 pretending to be Scotland in 1980 pretending to be somewhere in the Soviet Union. And it's hard to say which time paradox is the most annoying, the bootstrap one or the predestination one. Thank goodness Frazer Gregory is here to help us sort it all out — it's Before the Flood. Notes and links Like Steven B in our episode on Flatline, Frazer uses the Christopher Nolan film The Prestige (2006) as a way of understanding what Toby Whithouse is doing by setting up the bootstrap paradox at the start of this episode — it's a magic trick. Likewise, Frazer compares this story's unresolved conclusion with the way that the Season 9 episode of The Simpsons Das Bus throws its ending away with a hilarious voiceover from James Earl Jones. El Sandifer refers to the Fisher King as a Bone Vervoid in her TARDIS Eruditorum essay on this story. Bone Vervoid. Warning: she is considerably less kind to these two episodes than we have been. Of course, A Long Tradition of Doctor Who Monsters That in Some Way Resemble Human Genitalia is the title of Flight Through Entirety Episode 168, and it refers to Human Dalek Sec in Evolution of the Daleks. It is currently the record-holder as the longest title of any episode of Flight Through Entirety. We refer to some of Peter Serafinowicz's earlier work, including his role as the voice of Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace (1999), In 2002, he appeared in Look Around You, a spoof of educational science programmes for schoolchildren. And in 2007, he appeared in his own sketch comedy show on BBC Two, The Peter Serafinowicz Show, which introduced his character Brian Butterfield, who he continues to play on tour this year. The Butterfield Diet Plan is a must see. Picks of the week James Fans of weird time paradoxes will also enjoy Douglas Adams's Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (1987), which, through a time paradox of its own, was the inspiration for Adams's own Doctor Who stories, City of Death (1979) and Shada (1979, but in a nearby parallel universe). Peter Fans of weird time paradoxes will also enjoy the Sex in the City sequel TV series And Just Like That. Nathan Nathan picks the podcast Strong Songs, where enthusiastic and talented musician Kirk Hamilton analyses the music that he loves, in order to discover what it is that makes it great. Highly recommended. Frazer Like Nathan two weeks ago, Frazer recommends that you watch the wonderful new Star Trek series Strange New Worlds, which finished its second series earlier this year. Please consider rating or reviewing us on Apple Podcasts, or we'll turn up at your place in the middle of the night with a Fender Stratocaster to explain the paradox of entailment. And more Jodie into Terror was our flashcast on every episode of the Whittaker era, recorded just a couple of days after the broadcast of the episode. Bondfinger is our James Bond commentary podcast, which also covers some of our favourite spy-fi TV shows of the sixties and seventies. Maximum Power is a podcast about Blakes 7, a co-production with the Trap One Podcast. It's on hiatus right now, but it will be returning with our coverage of Series C some time next month, we think. And finally, there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. In our most recent episode, we watch a credible and highly-regarded episode of The Original Series with a monster in it that makes that hydra thing in Time-Flight look horrifyingly realistic.

In episode 281 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed reflecting on the time it takes to find a visual language, how simple things are complex and the connections between the history of art and photography. Plus this week, photographer Ian Hill takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which he answer's the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?' Ian Hill is based in Cumbria, in the north-west of England, and works in black and white 35mm film. His work is led by an attempt to respond to what he sees as environmental crisis in terms of what he photographs, where he photographs, and how he photographs. This has led to an increasing focus on the local, the small-scale, the un-noticed hedgerow plants, gate latches, abandoned walls and sheepfolds. It has also led to changes in his technical approach as he now uses environmentally benign chemicals. He states that his work has helped him to re-define his photography, as he works on projects which speak more about the local, the need for nurture, and about our connection with the land. He has published three books of his work The Fisher King, Alchemy and Lineage. https://printedland.weebly.com Dr. Grant Scott is the founder/curator of United Nations of Photography, a Senior Lecturer and Subject Co-ordinator: Photography at Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, a working photographer, documentary filmmaker, BBC Radio contributor and the author of Professional Photography: The New Global Landscape Explained (Routledge 2014), The Essential Student Guide to Professional Photography (Routledge 2015), New Ways of Seeing: The Democratic Language of Photography (Routledge 2019). His film Do Not Bend: The Photographic Life of Bill Jay was first screened in 2018 www.donotbendfilm.com.  In this, the second of two solo episodes with host Amanda Yates Garcia on "The Grail Knight", we discuss the mythologies of the Knight of Cups. Specifically, we focus on the Celtic legend of the Grail Knight Percival, his travels through the Forest of Arroy (the Forest of Adventure), and his encounter with the Fisher King. We talk about the Well Maidens, and the Wasteland. We describe the pursuit of the Grail as one of the founding myths of Western Civilization, because it describes the desecration of the sacred, but also prophesies what medicine must be found in order to  restore the world to right order. We give study questions, and also rituals you can use when themes related to the Knight of Cups show up in your reading, or your life. This episode is an investigation of the father wound.  I'll be exploring our own wounded fathers, the kind of wounds the masculine receives, and the shape our our own wounds as sons and daughters in a "time of no father," to quote Robert Bly.  I'm interested here in the archetypal and mythic terrain of the wounded feeling function, as Jung calls it.  I'm relying heavily on the Robert Johnson's book The Fisher King and the Handless Maiden, as well as Iron John by Robert Bly.  I'm curious what these important myths tell us about our wounded fathers, or the wounded masculine more generally.  This is the beginning of a two-part dive into this realm.  Enjoy!
