The Northern Ireland Protocol is a protocol of the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement that covers the special situation in the island of Ireland. Its terms were negotiated in 2019 and concluded in December 2020. The Protocol has been a thorn in the side of UK-EU relations ever since the UK left the transition period and entered a new trading relationship with the EU on 31st December 2020. Trade disruption between Northern Ireland and Great Britain and threats of invoking Article 16 of the Protocol by the EU over Covid vaccine supplies have soured relations and brought the protocol under scrutiny on both sides of the channel. Syed Kamall, Acting Academic and Research Director at the Institute of Economic Affairs, sits down with Victoria Hewson, IEA Head of Regulatory Affairs, and journalist Owen Polley to explain the Protocol and discuss its implications.

Sean Whelan, London Correspondent, reports on the proceedings in the House of Commons last night, as MPs debated the controversial Internal Market Bill that overrides parts of the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement with the European Union.

The Brexit saga has entered a tempestuous phase: the U.K. government is facing a backbench revolt over plans to breach the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement, and the EU is giving Britain until the end of the month to back down. But despite all this, is a deal still possible? Irish MEP Barry Andrews tells Bloomberg Westminster's Roger Hearing and Sebastian Salek it's doable if both sides make concessions. But has Boris Johnson promised too much? Anand Menon, director of the UK in a Changing Europe, says the prime minister has shown flexibility before, but if there's a deal it won't please everyone.

Tony Connelly, Europe Editor, reports that the UK's attempt to override elements of the Northern Ireland Protocol are a "clear breach" of the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement and would allow the European Commission to take legal action on several grounds.

October 2019 Currencies have been driven by two, perhaps forlorn, hopes this month. First, the expectation that the US and China will reach a phase one agreement on trade. Secondly, that a Brexit deal will be finalised. Phil Dobbie asks NAB’s Ray Attrill whether sentiment has been too positive on both. After all, we’ve still waiting for evidence that a trade agreement will be reached and, even though the UK parliament passed the first stage if the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement, they refused to agree to the rapid timetable Boris Johnson was setting. So what does that mean for the Aussie dollar, as further uncertainty seems almost certain.

The financial markets responded with a sharp drop in the pound before it stabilised and a fall in the share price of UK focused companies.
