pWotD Episode 2620: 2024 United Kingdom general election Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 376,778 views on Thursday, 4 July 2024 our article of the day is 2024 United Kingdom general election. The 2024 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday 4 July 2024 to elect 650 Members of Parliament (MPs) to the House of Commons. The election resulted in a landslide victory for the opposition Labour Party led by Keir Starmer, similar to that achieved by Tony Blair at the 1997 general election, the last time a Labour opposition ousted a Conservative government. The governing Conservative Party under Prime Minister Rishi Sunak lost over 240 seats and suffered their worst ever defeat, ending its 14-year tenure as the primary governing party. The combined vote share for Labour and the Conservatives reached a record low, with Labour's vote share becoming the smallest of any majority government in UK electoral history. Smaller parties did significantly well; the Liberal Democrats made significant gains to reach their highest ever number of seats. Reform UK did well in vote share and had MPs elected to the Commons for the first time. The Green Party of England and Wales also won a record number of seats. The Scottish National Party (SNP) lost around three quarters of its seats to Scottish Labour. Labour returned to being the largest party in Scotland and remained so in Wales. The Conservatives won no seats in Wales or Cornwall and only one seat in North East England.Discussion around the campaign focused on public opinion of a change in government, as Labour maintained significant leads in opinion polling over the Conservatives, but usually by around 20 percentage points, twice the lead they would eventually win. Significant constituency boundary changes were in effect, the first since those implemented at the 2010 general election. It was the first general election in which photographic identification was required to vote in person in Great Britain. The general election was the first since Brexit, the UK's departure from the European Union (EU) on 31 January 2020, which was a major issue in the 2019 general election; it was also the first to take place since the COVID-19 pandemic or under the Dissolution and Calling of Parliament Act 2022. This was the first victory for Labour in a general election in 19 years.A record number of Conservatives lost their seats at the election. Eleven were cabinet ministers, the highest amount in history, including Penny Mordaunt, Grant Shapps, Alex Chalk, Liam Fox, Johnny Mercer, Gillian Keegan and Mark Harper. Other MPs who lost their seats included the former prime minister Liz Truss, Michael Fabricant, Jonathan Gullis, Jacob Rees-Mogg, George Galloway and Douglas Ross. Newly elected MPs included the Reform UK leader Nigel Farage and its chairman Richard Tice, and the Green Party of England and Wales co-leaders Carla Denyer and Adrian Ramsay. MPs who stood down at the election included the former prime minister Theresa May, former cabinet ministers Sajid Javid, Dominic Raab, Matt Hancock, Ben Wallace, Nadhim Zahawi, Kwasi Kwarteng and Michael Gove, and long-serving MPs Harriet Harman and Margaret Beckett. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 12:35 UTC on Friday, 5 July 2024.For the full current version of the article, see 2024 United Kingdom general election on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm long-form Ruth.

I had a fascinating conversation, as always, with Graham Brown. We covered all the themes that make up Inspiring Leadership in our wide-ranging discussion, including why it is important to see Inspiring Leadership as a lifetime journey that requires integration of all its elements. We also discussed how the impact of one person can rally people to achieve great feats of heroism in war or dangerous situations, such as the storming of the US Capitol. Additionally, we emphasized the importance of providing practical top tips, not just academic insight.MQ was the first topic we discussed, specifically what people do when they know they are operating in grey areas, such as in the PPI mis-selling scandal when they knew it was wrong. We also explored how missing components of Inspiring Leadership can cause a person to "disintegrate" rather than being fully integrated. When MQ goes wrong, things can become very toxic very quickly. We gave acknowledgement to Andrew Griffiths for highlighting "leadership myths" that people believe to be true but are actually false.HQ is a key component, particularly the foundation of sleep, movement, and fitness, as well as looking after emotions and their combination with RQ resilience. Overdoing resilience can deplete one's reserves, make them difficult, snappy, and poor at decision making. We also discussed Graham's move from Singapore to Japan, remote working, and bullying, including the British Deputy Prime Minister, Dominic Raab being moved from his post.A big topic close to Graham's heart is AI, as he studied it at university. We concluded that we still need human input and emotions in some key areas. Finally, we discussed the key elements of discipline, trust, and attitude. Hosted on Acast. Drive For Performance or Bullying? It's a fine line...

No Bullsh!t Leadership

Episode #245 // I'm a vocal advocate of strong leadership: the need to stretch people to achieve extraordinary performance, with a single-minded focus on value creation (bearing in mind, of course, that value comes in many different forms: it's not just financial results).Recently, we've seen two cases from opposite sides of the world in which the stated drive for improved performance has resulted in serious allegations of bullying. The first, is Dominic Raab, the UK's Deputy PM, who was forced to resign after allegations of bullying were raised by some of his public sector departmental staff, and the second is an unfair dismissal lawsuit brought by a former employee of Myer, Australia's largest department store chain. Each of these relies on interpretation of the events on which the allegations are founded. And even though it can often be a case of “he said / she said”, in both these instances there's no shortage of witnesses. But did these cases genuinely involve bullying, or were they simply examples of strong leaders managing people who weren't doing their jobs to the required standard? I begin today's episode with a little revision on what strong leadership really is, and then I unpack these two specific cases to examine the fine lines that sometimes exist between performance drive and bullying.Source Material Referenced: No Bullsh!t Leadership Podcast Episode Ep.182: What Is Strong Leadership? The Economist - Bartleby If Enough People Think You're a Bad Boss, Then You AreThe Australian Financial Review Myer in court over alleged executive bullying————————NEW QUIZ: I've created a brand new 3-question quiz that'll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/yourceomentorYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.
