On this episode, we are joined by Candice Benbow: Author, Essayist, Public Theologian and Eductor. Candice is the creator of the Lemonade Syllabus, the author of Red Lip Theology, which launched to much acclaim earlier this year, and a regular contributor to Essence Magazine. Candice was asked to join us for this conversation because as we enter 2023, this is a year deeply meaningful for people of African descent on U.S. soil. We commemorate several major milestones this year; the 160th anniversary of the Emancipation Declaration, the 60th anniversary of the Birmingham Children's March, the 60th anniversary of the 4 little girls, and the March on Washington. Rarely do we center the women when commemorating the march toward freedom, but we have had a march of our own. And the work Candice is doing represents a critical Freedom March happening inside the Black community right now. We'd love to hear your thoughts. “This started off as a conversation about Beyoncé,” says host Brittany Packnett Cunningham, “but like her music, it became about so many other things: the evolution of womanhood, our queer siblings, spiritual sexuality and giving Black women their things.” So settle in and listen to legendary music writer Danyel Smith, NPR reporter Ayesha Rascoe, and theologian Candice Benbow talk about it all—from the politics of Beyoncé to why her music means so much right now. There are belly laughs, tears, and moments of deep acknowledgment. But first, this week's UNtrending news. Here at Holy Smokes we have a lot of interaction before and after we record the podcast episodes. And sometimes the nuggets of wisdom that are shared in those moments are just as impactful as the content we release for the public. Only our Patreon community gets all of the footage. For example, that one time we had Candice Benbow on the podcast we had an extensive dialogue in the pre-show about how people's perceptions of us are not our responsibility. In case you're not familiar with Candice Benbow, she is a public theologian and author of Red Lip Theology: For Colored Girls Who've Considered Tithing to The Beauty Supply Store When Sunday Morning Isn't Enough. While she was with us in the pre-show, we also discussed how people's reactions to her words have a lot to do with how our culture treats women. And when our conversation turned to talking about Jesus, Candice said, “I'm not committed to a sinless savior.” GASP. She gave us so much food for thought that we just had to share it with you. Hey there, I'm Kristian A. Smith, the host and the heretic of Holy Smokes; Cigars and Spirituality, the pastor of The Faith Community of Atlanta and the author of Breaking All The Rules: An Ancient Framework for Modern Faith, which serves as a resource for those of you who find yourself on the journey of decolonizing and deconstructing your faith. Welcome to Postseason 6 of Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality. What does that mean? It means we are bringing you some unreleased content and some of our most popular content while the team takes a rest to gear up for season 7. We're about to jump into the pre-show episode from Red Lip Theology featuring Candice Benbow. During this exchange you'll also hear the voices of Myron Randall “The Mystic” and Tierney “AT&T” Jordan. We're going to jump where we discuss how Candice has been accused of taking shots at people on social media. So pull up a chair and join us as we deconstruct harmful theology and build beloved community one cigar at a time. Let's get to it. Intermission Drop You can always count on Myron The Mystic to say something wild and mildly inappropriate. So, like I mentioned earlier this is the pre-show of the Red Lip Theology episode. After Myron took that shot, we addressed some technical issues with the live virtual audience. And then we got right back to it with Candice. And here is where she goes into the conversation about people's need for Jesus to be a sinless savior. Gird your loins. It's about to get heavy in here.

We talk God's unconditional love, women and the church, and her amazing new piece that's taken the internet by storm: 4:43.
Host Raquel Willis and writer Candice Benbow discuss Jay-Z's 4:44, Blac Chyna vs. Rob Kardashian, Donald Trump Jr. 's ineptitude and Tyler the Creator's potential queerness.
Politico and lawyer Angela Rye was featured on the cover of Essence's Woke 100 issue for her smart and peppered analysis of issues affecting marginalized communities. She tells Yolanda and Cori about her start in politics, how to stay woke and a preview of her new podcast On 1 with A. Rye. Ladies, can we talk about the trail of heartbreak left behind from a breakup you never saw coming? Did you give too much? Did he give too little? Candice Benbow, the author of 4:43, the viral internet response to JAY-Z's 4:44, sits down to discuss her emotional piece, social media's response and how women heal after a love lost.
In this episode, I am joined by my homegirls Shika and Chrissy. We answer a reader question and that leads into a conversation about the dreaded f*ck boy after discussing Candice Benbow's 4:43 blog post and Jay's 4:44 album. Chrissy shares that her f*ck boy meter is broken. *gasp* I share that I am considering re-visiting an old boy thang and get the girls advice. Then we explore our digital thotty ways and the taboo act of anal. *gasp* Boonie's Pick of the Week: Spotify's The Cookout playlist.
