The Lies We've Been Told About Grief Episode Description: In this eye-opening episode of Healing Starts with the Heart, grief specialist Sharon Brubaker confronts the damaging lies we've all been told about grief. From childhood, we are handed false beliefs like: • “Don't feel bad” • “Be strong” • “Time will heal” • “You should get over it” Sharon dives deep into how these messages have distorted our understanding of grief and often cause us to suppress or deny the pain we're carrying. She shares her own personal experience with the grief that no one warned her about, and how unlearning these toxic myths led her on a path of true healing. If you've ever felt like your grief didn't fit into the tidy boxes society sets for it, this episode is a must-listen. Sharon invites you to release the shame and guilt tied to these lies, offering a new, empowering perspective on what it truly means to grieve and heal. Key Points Discussed: The Lies We've Been Taught About Grief Why pretending to be “strong” and “moving on” can actually hold us back from healing. How Grief Should Really Be Handled Understanding grief as a personal journey that requires space, time, and the willingness to feel deeply. The Cost of Suppressing Grief How ignoring your grief can lead to long-term emotional pain, and why it's crucial to face it head-on. Grief as a Journey, Not a Destination Grief doesn't follow a timeline, and healing doesn't mean you “get over it.” It means you learn to live with it. Journal Questions for Reflection: What lies about grief have you been told or have believed? How do you feel when others tell you to “move on” or “be strong”? What would it look like if you gave yourself permission to grieve openly and without judgment? Join the Journey: Grief doesn't follow a simple, linear path, but Sharon is here to help you navigate it with compassion. Rather than one guest, this is a group call, with a discussion facilitated by Rick Belden, who was first on the podcast back in Episode 51. He returns here for what was a virtual night of exploring personal stories, the processing of grief, and the pathway to healing. On the call, we discussed questions such as - What is a Mother Wound? What is a Father Wound? What is our inner child? How can we access and heal earlier versions of ourselves? And how do we become connected to those inner selves? Rick is an artist, poet, and coach who works with men to solve difficult emotional, personal, and relational challenges. He's a great listener, is full of insights and experience, and I truly enjoyed my evening with Rick and the others who joined the call. Peter's mother passed when he was 7 and his father passed when he was 17. His resulting fear of loss, especially in relationships, was triggered by his first romantic relationship ending. Peter faced many sleepless nights worried about his future until one night he realized the answer to all his concerns was to be found in three words: I don't know. In that instance, he realized that the nature of life is uncertainty. He went on to explore how the mind influences our lives through his work with professional athletes and sports teams, entertainers, and global organizations. Peter is a writer, speaker, and thought leader in human awakening and potential. Peter Crone, the "mind architect," works with everyone from world-class athletes to stay-at-home parents to redesign the subconscious mind. We exist within limiting mental constructs that dictate our thoughts, feelings, actions, and the results we experience. Peter helps people and groups step outside of the world as they know it by identifying mental constructs that have been holding them back. Peter's work explores the fundamental issues that affect us all to foster a deeper understanding of our common humanity. Are you finding it hard to move forward in life because of a significant loss or trauma you've experienced? We can all agree there is no “right” way to recover from trauma, or an appropriate timeline for grief. But when you're the one who's suffering, it's terrifying to feel frozen in time when life just keeps moving on for everyone else. But there's no such thing as “stuck.” You are moving forward, even if it's in the wrong direction. And your physical health can quickly deteriorate when you're suffering from mental and emotional distress. Which can lead to a frustrating lack of support as most doctors don't address the mind-body connection. My guest is a brain health coach and certified hypnotist.
