After a flurry of commitments throughout June, things slowed down for UNC Football on the recruiting trail in the July and the first couple weeks of August. But now, there are multiple commitments scheduled for today (Friday, August 19) and in the coming weeks. Several of these young men are Tar Heel leans. Who will actually come to Chapel Hill to play for Mack Brown in college? Sports Illustrated's Director of Football Recruiting John Garcia, Jr. joins host Isaac Schade to unpack several of the upcoming commitments and provide an update on Daevin Hobbs. Carolina already has two wide receivers in the Class of 2023 in Christian Hamilton and Chris Culliver. WR Kevin Concepcion is committing today and according to John Garcia, Jr., this comes down to basically a coinflip between UNC and NC State. The second WR committing (on Wednesday, August 24) is Paul Billups who is the stronger Carolina lean and should become a Tar Heel (over Virginia Tech and Michigan State). On the other side of the football, the Tar Heels are also in good position for defensive tackle Joshua Horton, who is committing today. Horton will choose from between Carolina, Auburn, and UCF. Horton would join fellow DT Joel Starlings in the class. As for Daevin Hobbs, it's hard to get a good read on the recruitment now that Georgia, Alabama, and others have entered the process. Mack Brown and company will have to keep working hard to retain Hobbs' services for college. Over the course of the past nine days, North Carolina grew it's 2023 football class from six verbal commitments to 14 (FOURTEEN!!). This recruiting haul comes on the heels of the biggest official visit weekend of the summer. On today's episode, Sports Illustrated's Director of Football Recruiting John Garcia, Jr. joins host Isaac Schade to discuss this influx and why it might be happening. The conversation turns to the first commit in the class of '23, QB Tad Hudson, who committed to the Tar Heels on August 1 of last year. Hudson has played the Armando Bacot role for the class, recruiting everyone in sight. Despite having previously committed, Hudson joined the large official visit weekend, ostensibly to help recruit other players in attendance. Staying on the offensive side of the football, the conversation turns to two of Hudson's potential receivers in new WR commits Christian Hamilton and Chris Culliver, both in-state four-star commits.
