On October 7, 2023, exactly two years ago, an unimaginable horror overtook southern Israel. We all recall when we found out. The shock. Disbelief. Which only intensified with time. And the unanswered questions. So. Many questions. It seemed appropriate to publish this podcast today. In this episode, Ya'akov Katz, a regular guest on State of Tel Aviv and Beyond, discusses a book he has co-authored with Amir Bohbot; an expose that looks at the damning evidence and records of what happened. And what, tragically, did not. Where was the army? Air Force? What took so long for help to arrive as Hamas was slaughtering its way through southern Israel, unimpeded? Why? How?Amir and Ya'akov had been working on a different book when October 7 happened, and they quickly pivoted. Both have extensive backgrounds in military affairs and related fields which they bring to bear in this daunting project. The book is superb. Truly - a page turner. Published on September 2, it has already made one or two bestseller lists in the U.S. Most importantly, it begins a long-awaited examination of facts. Some of which are discussed publicly here for the first time. In this episode, Ya'akov discusses the failure of every critical security, intelligence, and political institution to interpret the information available to prevent one of the greatest disasters in Jewish history.Show your support for STLV at buymeacoffee.com/stateoftelavivPodcast Notes:“Crisply written... draws on excellent sources within Israel's military and intelligence services.” —The Wall Street JournalA powerful indictment of the political and military decisions that led to October 7While Israel Slept tells the gripping inside story of how Hamas, Israel's weakest enemy, succeeded in launching a surprise attack on one of the world's most powerful militaries. Through a detailed examination of the events leading up to October 7, 2023, the book exposes the intelligence and strategic failures that enabled this devastating invasion. It takes readers back in time, showing how years of complacency, mistaken intelligence analysis, and a misguided policy of containment enabled Hamas to prepare for an assault that Israel did not believe was possible and that would change the Middle East. The book unveils the dramatic events of the night before the attack, highlighting the cracks in Israel's military and political leadership. It provides unprecedented details on how key warnings were missed, and how Israel ignored the growing threat from Hamas, believing that the group was weak and deterred. By exposing these failures, While Israel Slept offers a stark, sobering account of how overconfidence and complacency paved the way for disaster, while underscoring the critical lessons Israel must embrace to safeguard its future.Yaakov Katz is an Israeli-American author and journalist. Between 2016 and 2023, Yaakov was editor-in-chief of The Jerusalem Post where he continues to write a popular weekly column. He is the author of three books: “Shadow Strike – Inside Israel's Secret Mission to Eliminate Syrian Nuclear Power”, “Weapon Wizards—How Israel Became a High-Tech Military Superpower” and “Israel vs. Iran: The Shadow War.”Prior to taking up the role of editor-in-chief, Yaakov served for two years as a senior policy adviser to Naftali Bennett during his tenure as Israel's Minister of Economy and Minister of Diaspora Affairs. In 2013, Yaakov was one of 12 international fellows to spend a year at the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University.Originally from Chicago, Yaakov has a law degree from Bar Ilan University. THE FIVE FACETS OF THE GOSPEL Part Five, The Gospel Demands By Louie Marsh, 9-28-2025 · The Gospel Events - The Death and Resurrection of Jesus · The Gospel Witnesses – Scripture, Apostles Eye-Witness Testimony · The Gospel Affirmations - Jesus is Lord - Jesus is Savior · The Gospel Promises - Forgiveness of sins – the gift of the Holy Spirit 1) The First Gospel Demand · Repent! “37Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 2:37–38, ESV) “19Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out,” (Acts 3:19, ESV) “30The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,” (Acts 17:30, ESV) o Repentance means to have a "CHANGE of mind or heart." o Used in Greek army for our phrase "ABOUT FACE!" · What do I repent about? o All my SINS in general. o DISBELIEF about Jesus in particular. “21testifying both to Jews and to Greeks of repentance toward God and of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Acts 20:21, ESV) Our main change of mind is about Christ, from rejecting Him to Accepting Him! · My repentance shows through my BAPTISM. The first sign of real repentance is following the command of Christ to be baptized. If you're still arguing about it – ask yourself who's really in charge? If it's Jesus then why not just do it? “18And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”” (Matthew 28:18–20, ESV) · My repentance shows through my LIFESTYLE. “7But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8Bear fruit in keeping with repentance.” (Matthew 3:7–8, ESV) Quote from Dr. Rene Padilla.. "This new reality places men in a position of crisis-they cannot continue to live as if nothing had happened; the Kingdom of God demands a new mentality, a reorientation for all their values ...repentance is much more than a private affair between the individual and God. It is the complete reorientation of life in the world- among men- in response to the work of God in Jesus Christ." 2) The Second Gospel Demand · Submit to Christ as Lord! This is the real goal of repentance - to turn away from a self directed life and toward a Christ directed one! That's why as a Christian repentance continues to be a vital part of our lives - we must do it every day! All Gospel preaching in the NT led to this point! 3) Savior VS Lord Question John Stott wrote this in 1975, "They distinguish sharply between the acceptance of Jesus as Savior and the surrender to Him as Lord, and they even promulgate the grotesque notion that to insist on surrender in addition to acceptance is to distort the Gospel. Well I honor their conscientious desire to protect the Gospel from all perversions...Further we must be careful never to define faith in such a way as to ascribe to it any merit. The whole value of faith lies in its object (Jesus Christ), not in itself. Nevertheless, saving faith in not an acceptance of Jesus Christ as Savior in within a kind of mystical vacuum, and without any awareness either of the Christ being accepted or of the concrete implications of this acceptance. Saving faith is a total, penitent and submissive commitment to Christ, and it would have been inconceivable to the apostles that anybody could believe in Jesus as Savior without submitting to him as Lord." · I must adopt a BIBLICAL Balance “7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:7–9, ESV) We're not talking perfectionism here. That's why forgiveness and repentance are so vital. Neither are we saying it's o.k. to get fire insurance alone. To accept Christ in truth is to struggle with making Him and Him alone Lord of all your life. Jason Sacks said, "If you're not going live like a Christian then don't call yourself one!"
In this episode of the Journey Beyond Divorce Podcast, I sit down with Marc Azoulay, psychotherapist and founder of Men's Therapy Online, for a raw and powerful conversation about the struggles men face during and after divorce. Too often, men are left to navigate their grief alone—raised to be stoic, self-sufficient, and emotionally guarded. But when divorce shatters their world, the quiet reckoning sets in. Identity collapses. Numbness and rage surface. Disbelief lingers. Many men find themselves staring at the wreckage of what used to be, barely recognizing who they are anymore. Marc and I explore what it really takes for men to move through this kind of pain and begin rebuilding their lives. We talk about the collapse of identity after divorce, the hidden cost of traditional masculinity, and why community, mentorship, and ritual are essential for healing. Marc offers practical guidance for finding structure and meaning again, navigating co-parenting while hurting, and stepping back into dating without the masks that keep men disconnected from their truth. He also shares the deeper practices that help men reclaim themselves and rise stronger—on their terms. Marc Azoulay, LPC, LAC, CGP, ACS, is the founder of Men's Therapy Online, a groundbreaking healing community that combines psychoanalysis, neuroscience, and Buddhism. His work—whether through group counseling, individual therapy, or wilderness retreats—creates safe spaces where men can confront their grief, break down unconscious barriers, and discover the man they were always meant to be. If you are a man navigating the grief of divorce and searching for clarity, brotherhood, and strength, this episode will offer both insight and a path forward. 20 September 2025 Daily Devotion:"Doubt and Disbelief" Luke 1:18 New Living Translation 18 Zechariah said to the angel, “How can I be sure this will happen? I'm an old man now, and my wife is also well along in years.” What do you do when times are difficult? When you've trusted until you're tired and you've endured until you're empty? What's your response when well-meaning folkstoss “For those who love God all things work together for good” your way like it's a magic cure-all for whatever ails you (Romans 8:28 Esv)? If you're Zechariah, you say, “Prove it.” It's easy enough to judge him, but who hasn't, at some point, yearned for just a little tangible reassurance? Maybe you're trying to pay your bills from an empty bank account. Or you've been sitting with someone you love, and he or sheis fading fast. Sometimes He takes pity on us. He hears our doubts and lets us touch the scars (John 20:24-27). There is joy for those who are able to believe even when they can't see (John 20:29) and who simply take God at His Word (Luke 1:45). Let's takeour cue from Mary and joyfully say, “Let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38 ESV).
John shares his raw feelings after the shocking assassination of Charlie Kirk on September 10, 2025, in Utah. He talks about the disbelief, anger, and sadness that followed—and asks the bigger question: where do we go from here as a nation? This episode isn't about politics or blame. Instead, John turns tragedy into a call for hope and change, encouraging us to practice empathy, real listening, and have honest conversations even with those who hold different views from us. I want to hear about it. I want to hear all your reasons why, but I also want you to be open to hearing what I have to say, what I have to share, what I believe, and why all of that's important.” “Just the smallest glimmer of light, the smallest glimmer of hope can begin to push away the darkness.” CONNECT WITH JOHN Website - https://iamjohnhulen.com LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnhulen Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/johnhulen Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/johnhulen X - https://x.com/johnhulen YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLX_NchE8lisC4NL2GciIWA EPISODE CREDITS Intro and Outro music provided by Jeff Scheetz - https://jeffscheetz.com/

Aug 10, 2025 GRAND PARKWAY BAPTIST CHURCHNeil McClendon, Lead PastorGrand Parkway Baptist ChurchThinking Through The QuestionsMatthew 3:13-171. What does it look like to be missional? v. 132. Why does Jesus get baptized? Four reasons Jesus gets baptized… a) identifies with the people b) submits to the will of the Father c) practices what He preaches- Matthew 28:18-20 d) to fulfill all righteousness Two ways… 1) confirms John as the forerunner to the Messiah 2) confirms Jesus as the Messiah • Isaiah 42:1 • Acts 8:30-353. What are my real needs?, v. 17Our three biggest needs… a) identity- “This is my son…" b) affection- …whom I love…" Could we with ink the ocean fill and were the skies of parchment made, were ev'ry stalk on earth a quill and ev'ry man a scribe by trade, to write the love of God above would drain the ocean dry; nor could the scroll contain the whole, tho' stretched from sky to sky. • Disbelief- the inability to accept something as true • Unbelief- the unwillingness to believec) acceptance- “...with whom I am well pleased.” Three back to school questions… 1) “In God, who's word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh (people) do to me?” - Psalm 56:4 2) “The Lord is my light and my salvation whom shall I fear: The Lord is the stronghold of my life: of whom shall I be afraid?” - Psalm 27:1 1) Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.” - Psalm 42:5Mental worship… 1. If un-seized time flow to your weakness, where does your unseized time most often go? 2. Which is bigger, your “from” or your “to?” 3. Have you ever been baptized? Why did you or why haven't you? 4. Are you more guilty of disbelief or unbelief? 5. Where were you when you really understood the love of God for what it is? 6. Who's acceptance do you probably want too much?

“The subject of affairs, I think it's of interest to everybody. We have all had an Oedipal experience - we've all been babies who have at some point realized that we are not the only person. We're not perfectly fused with our mother, and she has other things to do, and there may be a father. We've all known what rejection feels like, and probably betrayal, and I think that affairs are in our unconscious. I think that's sort of evident in the way that most great novels, most great films, or at least many, have an affair at their heart. From Anna Karenina to Madame Bovary to Fatal Attraction, I think this is something that is just interesting. I wanted to write about affairs because I think they are a way of showing what psychoanalysis can do in a field in which everyone has an opinion on, and probably most people, in some way, have been indirectly or directly affected by. That was really the sort of the genesis for wanting to write about affairs.” Episode Description: We consider the challenge of writing about dynamic treatments in a manner that is accessible to the non-clinical reader. Juliet's book about affairs opens up this widely recognized experience and adds intrapsychic insights without using emotionally - distancing jargon. She introduces us to individuals who have been involved in affairs, with carefully protected confidentiality, who generally reveal the power of past experiences to influence adult choices. Some end happily, and some end in agony. Juliet demonstrates the usefulness of bringing a dynamic listening to both accepting and deepening each individual's lifelong search for love. Our Guest: Juliet Rosenfeld is a psychoanalyst and a member of the British Psychoanalytical Society, London. She studied at Oxford before a 15-year career in advertising and marketing, ending up in Government Communications. During this time, she began a Master's at the Tavistock and Portman Trust in Organizational Consultancy and started training as a psychotherapist a year later. She qualified as an integrative psychotherapist in 2012. Juliet was an elected trustee of the UK Council of Psychotherapy for four years, and is presently one of two clinician Trustees at the Freud Museum London, Sigmund Freud's final home. Juliet is the author of two books, The State of Disbelief ( 2020) and Affairs, True Stories of Love, Lies, Hope and Desire. Juliet's broader interest is in how psychoanalysis might be more accessible, and its ideas put into non-clinical language for audiences who may never be able to access psychotherapy themselves but are curious about what the unconscious means and what goes on in the consulting room. In this episode of Excess Returns, Matt Zeigler and Jason Buck sit down with Eric Crittenden, CIO of Standpoint Funds, for a wide-ranging and candid discussion about trend following, risk transfer markets, and what it takes to build a resilient investment strategy for uncertain futures. Eric shares decades of hard-won insights on investor behavior, portfolio construction, performance pain points, and why blending passive equities with systematic macro might just be the future of asset allocation.
BT and Sal dive into a lively discussion about their cinematic viewing habits, revealing surprising gaps and strong opinions. Sal admits to shockingly never seeing Die Hard with a Vengeance and only recently watching the original Die Hard, much to BT's disbelief and comedic outrage over Sal's qualms about John McClane's bare feet. Their conversation quickly spirals into a broader "guy movie" quiz, with BT challenging Sal on classics like Scarface, The Godfather, Goodfellas, and Shawshank Redemption, while Sal reveals he's missed out on Fight Club, Heat, and Rambo, leading to further playful jabs and a call for Sal to expand his action film horizons.
Dr. Aleksandra Treglown has spent years listening to children recount the worst moments of their lives—only to watch their truths be ignored. In this episode, she reveals how disbelief—by courts, by law enforcement, and by the public—is not just a barrier to justice, but a form of systemic violence against women and children. Through her research and frontline work, she exposes the devastating power of disbelief, and the urgent need to confront it. https://www.patreon.com/knoxrobinson https://www.amandaknox.com Bluesky: @amandaknox.com | @wisecracker.bsky.social IG: @amamaknox | @emceecarbon Free: My Search for Meaning: https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/amanda-knox/free/9781538770719/ Learn more about your ad choices. Throughout the book of Judges, one can see Israel's spiritual cycle of disobedience, judgment, cries for help, rescue by judges, and then relapse. They start strong (1:1-4) but fail to fully obey, blaming iron chariots (1:19) and enslaving some (1:28). Key lessons from Judges chapters 1 and 2: Disbelief breeds disaster. Forgetting God's works leads to abandoning Him. Idols enslave; God saves. Flawed judges can't fully save, but God's covenant points to Jesus, who delivers and atones. Cure: repent, obey, pray, and trust God.

My returning guest this week is Will Gervais (@willgervais.com), a professor who studies evolutionary and cultural psychology at the Centre for Culture and Evolution at Brunel University London. He recently published a book called Disbelief: The Origins of Atheism in a Religious Species and it's genuinely a must read for anyone who either believes in god or doesn't, so I've brought him on to pick his brain on what makes some people theists and others atheists.Disbelief: https://www.prometheusbooks.com/9781633889248/disbelief/Music by GW RodriguezEditing by Adam WikSibling Pod:Philosophers in Space: https://0gphilosophy.libsyn.com/Support us at Patreon.com/EmbraceTheVoidIf you enjoy the show, please Like and Review us on your pod app, especially iTunes. We often think about "making things make sense" in worldbuilding and building internal consistency, scientific realism, and other logic-based considerations into our fiction -- But what happens when your worldbuilding principle is “What would be awesome?" Jim C. Hines, who embraced this principle for a forthcoming book, joins us to explore the possibilities! The Rule of Cool, credit to, is defined thusly: "The limit of the Willing Suspension of Disbelief for a given element is directly proportional to its awesomeness." In other words, if it's cool enough, you can get away with it. This often applies to sci-fi tech and fantasy magic. Let's be real, things like faster-than-light travel, lightsabers, and starfighters will always be "rule of cool", in one way or another (so far as we currently understand physics), and magic doesn't have to be something you break down and quantify and explain perfectly. So what can we play with? And where do those decisions intersect with narrative tone, genre standards, and reader expectations? [Transcript TK] Our Guest: Jim C. Hines is the author of the Magic ex Libris series, the Princess series of fairy tale retellings, the humorous Goblin Quest trilogy, and the Fable Legends tie-in Blood of Heroes. He also won the 2012 Hugo Award for Best Fan Writer. His latest novel is Terminal Peace, book three in the humorous science fiction Janitors of the Post-Apocalypse trilogy. He lives in mid-Michigan with his family.

Dr. Olivia Cacchione, a musicologist, sat with Patrick in the parlor to discuss her current work and study of music and sound in Victorian seances. Olivia also shared about years of uncomfortable out-of-body experiences and hearing voices that led to her being diagnosed with Temporal Lobe Epilepsy. Plus skepticism, haunted listening, enchantment, possibility vs. disbelief, Victorians and the accordion, the channeled music of Rosemary Brown, and asking the question, “How does music haunt us?” Visit BigSeance.com/257 for more info. Other Listening Options Direct Download Link In this episode: Intro :00 Dr. Olivia Cacchione studies the sounds of ghosts and hauntings throughout history. She's a musicologist who earned her PhD at Northwestern University and received a Mellon Fellowship to conduct her extensive archival research across England and America. She is currently working on a book that highlights the role of music and sound in Victorian seances. Olivia's dissertation examined the cultural history of hearing, questioning how music haunts us, with an emphasis on the lived experience of the Victorian-era spiritualist séance. She covered Daniel Dunglas Home's accordion, the Davenport Brothers' musical cabinet, and lesser known mediums like Jennie Lord, who practically invented the musical seance. And Olivia wants you to know that she has a cat who is proudly named Madame Blavatsky. You can learn more about Olivia Cacchione and her work by visiting welcometotheseance.com. :45 What is a musicologist? 2:02 From harp performance to a PhD in musicology. 3:44 Patrick once again nerds out about the theremin. 6:12 More on where this interest in Victorian Spiritualism came from, and the pushback from her colleagues regarding her chosen area of study. 7:32 Hearing Voices. “When I was 15, I began ‘hearing things.' It took me ten years to receive a diagnosis of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy.” 10:51 Olivia's voices and out-of-body experiences. Are they paranormal? Or are they just symptoms of her diagnosis? 15:24 Enchantment. 16:45 “[The episodes were] very dark and quite scary, actually.” 18:05 Possibility vs Disbelief. 19:03 Victorian Spiritualists and Seances. For Victorians, it was really dark at night! 21:49 Haunted Listening. 27:56 Patrick reminisces about experiences years ago with his “rapper” from doing EVP research and experiments. 29:28 “How does music haunt us? What does it mean to be haunted, mesmerized, enchanted, or spellbound by a work?” 32:24 Check out Jerry Goldsmith's score for the 1985 film, The Explorers. 35:40 “[Victorians] simply had a different relationship with music.” 39:09 Music as a trigger. 41:11 Victorians and the accordion. 42:47 Residual music from the Bird Cage Theatre. 43:57 A Musical Seance featuring Rosemary Brown, who claimed to channel music from the great composers. 46:01 Alfred Russel Wallace. 48:28 “Before I was diagnosed, I absolutely thought, 'Maybe I'm psychic.' I wanted to lean in that direction with it.” 50:07 “People hear what I'm studying and they immediately want to tell me their own ghost stories. And you realize just how many people have ghost stories, and I love hearing them.” 51:12 Olivia's final thoughts. 54:40 Outro 56:27 Resources welcometotheseance.com The Big Seance Podcast can be found right here, on Apple Podcasts, Pandora, Spotify, TuneIn Radio, Amazon Music, Audible, iHeart Radio, and YouTube.
