Text us your questions!Randy and Kyle get brutally honest about the moment doubt stops feeling like “questions” and starts feeling like unbelief, including what it's like to say that out loud when you're a pastor with a church, a family, and a job that takes for granted that you believe in God.We dig into the philosophy and the lived spirituality behind the words we toss around too easily: belief, disbelief, doubt, and faith. Kyle unpacks the senses in which belief is (and isn't) an attitude toward a proposition, why certainty is basically impossible, and why faith can't survive if it's treated like a 100% confidence score. From “faith that” (propositions like the resurrection) to “faith in” (trust, loyalty, relationship), we explore how acceptance, hope, desire, and resilience can carry a Christian faith journey through seasons when your mind won't cooperate. We also talk Bible language like pistis as faithfulness, the hiddenness of God, and why the tradition is full of saints and spiritual giants who knew darkness from the inside. Our goal isn't to shame atheism or glorify doubt, but to make space for honesty and widen the possibilities for understanding what faith can mean.=====Want to support us?The best way is to subscribe to our Patreon. #1787: Blending the Elements of Experiential Design & Process-Relational Foundations of the Elements

Voices of VR Podcast – Designing for Virtual Reality

I gave a lecture about "Blending the Elements of Experiential Design" on Saturday, June 6, 2026 at Seattle XR in Seattle, Washington. (PDF of Slides]. At the end, I run through some examples of the types of interdisciplinary fusion that I see within the context of immersive storytelling and immersive art. This lecture also digs into the process-relational philosophical foundations, as well as how I'm gaining additional inspiration from Empedocles, Aristotle, and the Classical Quadrivium (Four Arts) of Math, Music, Geometry, and Astronomy. For my 30+ hours of coverage of Venice Immersive, then I apply this archetypal framework to help describe the context, quality, character, and story of each of these projects. You can see an overview of how I've been using this framework in this PDF on "Venice Immersive 2025 Archetypal Categorizations" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01M5NcOYzx0 One of goals of this talk was to further define the archetypal nature of the elements, and how I'm conceiving of them as a possibility space of design tradeoffs (C.S. Peirce's "Firstness"), but also as the concrete decisions that an experiential designer makes ("Secondness"), and then finally how these decisions are experienced more from a phenomenological experience as the audience as we feel, sense, act, and make sense of these experiences, and what they might mean ("Thirdness"). I do not actually dive into Peirce's concepts of Firstness, Secondness, or Thirdness in this specific talk, but I wanted to elaborate on these concepts in this write-up as these have been crucial concepts to help translate the overall abstract Firstness quality of my talk, and ground it into the Secondness of something that is a bit more practical and pragmatic. For Peirce, his semiology is grounded into a triune theory of actualization that goes from a non-Boolean possibility space as Firstness, and then grounds into a Boolean actualization of secondness, and then an interpretant mediates from the concreteness of the Secondness object back to the Firstness of the fundamental archetypal qualities or meaning. I find speculative philosopher James Bradley's summary of the Peirce's triune semiology to be the most easy to digest in his essay titled, "Beyond Hermeneutics: Peirce's Semiology as a Trinitarian Metaphysics of Communication." I can also recommend this article on "Peirce's Theory of Signs" from the The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy for a comprehensive recap, and there's also this excellent YouTube series primer by Philosign's Markus Raninen titled The Basics of Semiotics. But here's Bradley's description of Firstness, Secondness, and Thirdness, which I find myself coming back to again and again. "Within the fundamental speculative triunity of activity, difference and order, or firstness, secondness and thirdness, semiology is an analysis of order or thirdness… Thirdness is analyzed as idea or sign, as the exchange of information between individual entities, and as interpretation; in other words, thirdness is itself a threefold of sign, object and interpretant. Here, sign occupies the position of firstness because it is the potentiality for interpretation; object occupies that of secondness because it is determinate; and the interpretant occupies that of thirdness because the interpretant has the sign-interpreting or sign-ordering role, and so has the status of a third. [24] Thus for Peirce semiology is the analysis of the triune relation of sign, object and interpretant." It's still a bit obtuse, and one way that I like to think about it is through the experience of communication. You have a possibility space of meaning you want to convey (Firstness of the sign/potential), then you choose specific words that convey that meaning (Secondness of the object), then someone listens to those words and phrases, and then connects those words back to a meaning space (Thirdness of the interpretant mediating between the two). For Peirce, each of the Firstness, Secondness, and Thirdness can also refer to themselves, like you can have a Firstness of Thirdness or Secondness of Firstness. It gets a little bit confusing, but I found the following graphic from Collected Essays in Speculative Philosophy (2021) by James Bradley and edited by Sean McGrath to be very useful. Within the context of immersive storytelling, then it's a semiotic process of communication of meaning where you're able to use all sorts of affordances from game design, literature, social dynamics and relations, music, film, lighting, architecture, dance, theme park design, sensory design, and embodiment. My Elemental Theory of Presence attempts to simplify this into the following: Fire Element of Active Presence: Interactivity, Agency, Game Design Air Element of Mental & Social Presence: Meaning, Semiotics, Language, Possibility, Form, Relationality Water Element of Emotional Presence: Experiential Processes, Story, Film, Music, Cycles, Time Earth Element of Environmental & Embodied Presence: Sensory, Immersive, Worldbuilding, Space I elaborate on the various philosophical frameworks that I'm leaning up within this talk that I gave on June 6, 2026, but since then I've been diving more into Peirce and his Triune Metaphysics and Semiology of Firstness, Secondness, and Thirdness, which has been a helpful framework as I've been applying the elements to my Venice Immersive Coverage and categorizing the elemental center of gravity for each of the nearly 40 projects that I covered. Again see this framework in this PDF on "Venice Immersive 2025 Archetypal Categorizations" to see how I have been thinking about each of these projects. I used this approach in the introductions for each of my podcast episodes from Venice (see the links down below). Firstness of Fire: Creativity, Novelty, Intention, Purpose, Goals, & Aristotle's Final Cause Secondness of Fire: Interactivity & Core Gameplay Loops Thirdness of Fire: Agency & Will For Active Presence Examples of Fire: Game Design, Locomotion Options: No Movement, Automatic movement, Teleportation, or free roaming. The LIVENESS of the Live, To what degree does the experience encourage the expression of will and agency? And to what degree does that alter how the narrative unfolds (narrative agency vs participatory interactive moments that customize and flavor the experience)? Adventure, Exploration, Creativity, Novelty, Freedom, Will, and Collective Action. System Dynamics, & iterative feedback loops Firstness of Air: Peirce's "Sign," Intended Meaning, Pattern & Form, Archetypal Possibility Spaces, Relationality, & Aristotle's Formal Cause Secondness of Air: Peirce's "Object" Within A Triadic Semiotic Process (i.e. a specific action, word, harmonic, or action that points to a larger meaning.) Thirdness of Air: Peirce's "Interpretant," Sensemaking Thoughts, Expectations, & Social Dynamics For Mental & Social Presence Examples of Air: Literature, Language, Semiotics, Communication, Symbols, Abstractions. Single Player vs Multi-Player, Suspension of Disbelief and Plausibility, Social Dynamics, Anticipation of the Future, Possibility Spaces, Types of Choices. Realms of Speculative Imagination, How is meaning communicated? Dialogue amongst characters, voice-over narration, environmental storytelling, non-verbal associative dream logic. Mental friction from puzzles. Rules & Mechanics. Use of certain types of AI and Conversational Interfaces with Virtual Beings Firstness of Water: Time, Cycles, Harmonics, Value, & Aristotle's "Material Cause" (in Whitehead's event ontology, then base reality is processes, relationships, and possibilities of value & not Substance) Secondness of Water: Experiential Processes That Provide Contrasts Thirdness of Water: Feelings for Emotional Presence Examples of Water: Cinematic Film Tradition, Music, Harmonics, Rhythm, Pacing, Editing, Contrasts, Emotion, Memory, Dreams, Images, Soul, Psyche, Symbols, Lighting, Mood, Collective Unconscious Firstness of Earth: Space, World, Context, & Aristotle's Efficient Cause Secondness of Earth: Environment & Worldbuilding With Situated Perspectives in that Context Thirdness of Earth: Sensory Perception & Sense of Place for Embodied & Environmental Presence Examples of Earth: Worldbuilding of a spatial context & culture. Architecture, Theater, Theme Park Design, Dance, Are you a ghost or an embodied character? Sensory Experience: Touch/Haptics, Hearing/Spatial Sound, Smells, Vision. Relation of Immersive Tech to Environment as either VR, MR, or AR. Virtual CGI vs Cinematic 180/360 Video, Again, check out this PDF on "Venice Immersive 2025 Archetypal Categorizations" to see how I've ranked nearly 40 projects from Venice Immersive 2025 on the relative elemental center of gravity. Some projects feel more like a cinematic immersive film, which would be a bit more biased towards the Water Element. Some projects are more focused on the experience of a world that was build, and more focused on the Earth Element. Some projects are asking you to Read a book together with other people, which is more focused on the Air Element. And then other more game-like experiences are focused on using interactions as their primary mode of engagement, and so they're more focused on the fire element. There are 64 total combinations of the elements in terms of the first, second, third, or four centers of gravity, and you can see the comprehensive visualization here: Technically, all four elements are always happening all at once all at the same time. However, in experiential design, then creators can emphasize and blend elements together. So I find that ranking the elements can be helpful in determining an overall center of gravity, and that looking at the first two centers of gravity can achieve a sufficient job of creating some ad hoc, immersive and "elemental genres....

She reflects on the transformative power of journal writing, the act of crafting experience into art, and the courage it takes to share untold family stories across generations. Laverne also shares how her evolution from hair designer to fiber artist intertwined with her literary pursuits, and explains how turning to color and technique in her studio became a method of coping and healing. She details her participation in the Carlton Wing retrospective, creating a “wisdom staff” from found objects and her signature silk scraps—a testament to collaboration, memory, and artistic resilience. As Bill and Alison Chawke waited outside courtroom number three in Limerick Circuit Court on Tuesday morning, their mood appeared upbeat. However, a short time later, as Judge Fiona O'Sullivan started to talk about prison time, the reality of their situation dawned on them, and shock quickly became visible on their faces. The son and daughter of prominent publican Charlie Chawke were in court for a vicious assault they launched on two men at the Dunraven Arms Hotel in Adare, Co Limerick, in November 2023. Both victims were left with physical and mental injuries. The Chawkes own some of the country's best-known pubs, with Bill and Alison heavily involved in the family business, and seemingly highly respected in their industry. And yet today, mother-of-three Alison and recent newlywed Bill find themselves behind bars. So, what does it all mean for the Chawke empire? This week, we hear from Dr. Michael Guillén, a physicist who grew up in East LA, earned his PhD from Cornell, taught at Harvard, and spent fourteen years as the science editor for ABC News—including a dive to the wreck of the Titanic that nearly killed him. Dr. Guillén shares how decades of studying invisible forces in the universe—dark matter, hidden dimensions, the limits of what science can actually see—ultimately led the self-described atheist to faith and why he believes science makes the case for God stronger, not weaker. Later in the episode, we hear from Chris Hodges, founding pastor of Church of the Highlands, who opens up about the grief, burnout, and panic attacks that brought him to a breaking point after a decade of leading one of the country’s fastest-growing churches—and the five-step process he found in scripture that pulled him out. I don’t feel that lonely. I’m finding that more and more scientists are very receptive to the idea of God.” - Dr. Michael Guillén “Science has made it easier for me to believe in God, not harder. I’ve grown accustomed to dealing with invisible realities. It’s the bread and butter of modern science. The fact that God is invisible is no big deal for me, because I see His fingerprints everywhere.” - Dr. Michael Guillén “I liken the process or the feelings of depression and burnout as kind of being in the cave. Like, you know there’s a way out, but you don’t know where it is and it’s dark and it’s confusing.” - Chris Hodges “Many people only know God in the dynamic; they don’t know Him in the intimate.” - Chris Hodges “When I had a new assignment, and a fresh purpose for life.. If someone comes to us with an offer, saying, "I will take care of all your affairs"—for instance, I have an app, and this app will take care of all your other apps, and that includes accounting and all your emails—something like Notion, where you just put it all in one place and then you don't have to worry about it, only much better. Yes, this person will take care of your financial situation. If you're lacking somewhere, that person will make up for it and pay all your debts. You might then ask, "Well, how much is it going to cost per month or per year to pay for this app you're offering me?" You might also think there's a learning curve to figure out how to work this app that's going to solve all my problems. You might also think, "Maybe you're taking my information and selling it to somebody else," or you may think, "What happens when the app becomes obsolete and then all my information is out there?" You may have many doubts, but if one suspends one's disbelief at the very beginning of reading the Bhagavad-gītā, to accept that there is a Supreme Person who controls everything, who is within everyone's heart, and who is our well-wisher. In that suspended disbelief—the idea that there could be such a person—we accept that He is offering us an opportunity that if we give Him all our information and "take the app," He'll take care of everything. And then, at the end: mā śucaḥ—"Don't worry, I'll deal with it." Such an offer we might consider. If we consider that, taking advantage of such an offer is all that's necessary for a successful life. Because there is a Supreme Personality of Godhead. He's within our hearts. We established that last week (if you were here for the class) beyond a shadow of a doubt. If we had a jury, we would have gotten a verdict of "Yes, there is a Supreme Personality of Godhead within everyone's heart." If we understand the definition of the Supreme Personality of Godhead—that He's benevolent and He's all-powerful—and then we take heed of the offer that He gives, "Just surrender unto Me," then what could be the problem? There would be no problem. That's why Kṛṣṇa says, "mā śucaḥ." To encourage us, and anyone who is practicing on the path trying to connect to Kṛṣṇa, in verse BG 6.40, Kṛṣṇa very sweetly says to Arjuna: 'durgatiṁ tāta gacchati'. I say "sweetly" because the word tāta means "Oh, my dear one," or "Oh, my son." He is saying it in a very tender way with an open heart: "Don't worry. If you're trying, if you're sincere, and you try on this path, then you'll never be overcome by evil." Pārtha naiveha nāmutra—in this world or in the next world, vināśas tasya vidyate—you'll never be vanquished. Na hi kalyāṇa-kṛt kaścit—because if you're the kalyāṇa-kṛt, if you're doing the right thing—which only means you're sincerely trying to surrender to Kṛṣṇa, even if you're not completely successful, durgatiṁ tāta gacchati—you'll never have an inauspicious destination, anywhere: this world, next world. The conclusion is that if we're sincere, it's infallible. ------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=launch2025 https://vaisesikadasayatra.blogspot.com/

Which ending of Mark should we read? What's the significance of Passover? How would WE have responded to news of Jesus' resurrection? Disbelief? Fear? Would we even have been around, or in hiding?

IntroductionChristians often take the resurrection of Christ for granted. We do not do this because we necessarily doubt Christ, but because we have heard the story so many times that we fall into a trap where we think we already know this stuff. So, we are tempted to tune out. The problem is we can have such a superficial understanding that we miss the scope and necessity of Christ's resurrection. Why Suffer These Things? The resurrection serves as God's vindication of Christ's innocence. The reality is if Christ stays in the grave then he really did fail. It would mean that he really did transgress the Lord's holiness. Luke furnishes for us proof that Christ is innocent. There are three witnesses: Pilate, Herod, and the Centurion. Despite these multiple witnesses declaring Christ innocent earthly courts condemned him to death. The resurrection represents the heavenly courts overturning this verdict. This is what the prophets have predicted. Christ himself stated that he will suffer these things. The problem is not with God's revelation, but his disciples' ability to comphrehend. Why Enter into Glory? When Christ appeared to his disciples on the road to Emmaus, they were "slow of heart" to believe what the prophets had spoken. They couldn't reconcile their expectations of a triumphant Messiah with the reality of a suffering Savior who died. Christ wasn't attacking their intelligence but their spiritual obtuseness. Christ is not calling them stupid, but saying they lack dicernment. Their expectaiton is that the messiah comes, and brings glory. They forgot the whole part about suffering. Christ is making clear that in order for Easter to be Easter there has to be Good Friday: The Messiah's death on the cross. Why the Disbelief? Despite their doubt and misunderstanding, Christ didn't abandon these disciples. One would expect that Christ would just be fed up. No, he listened to their ignorant claims about Christ's mission. Christ does not cast them away, but instead, he dined with them. Remember the banquet themes in Luke's gospel? Table fellowship communicates a social partnership. This meal symbolized Christ's continued communion with those who struggle to understand redemption. Christ's dining is showing that even when we fail to grasp the full significance of his work, he still welcomes us into fellowship.ConclusionThe resurrection of Christ is the cornerstone of Christianity. We can think that Easter is a nice story of victory. We can think that Easter is a great day that guarantees our resurrection. These things are true. What we need to realize is without Easter, our faith is futile and we remain dead in our sins. The beauty of the resurrection is it grounds in history a precedent. The Lord does not just assert, but he brings to pass what he sword to do. The resurrection validates the Lord's word. Rather than casting us aside when we fail to understand, he invites us into fellowship, patiently instructing us, and assuring us that we really are united to him. Our hope is found not in our perfect understanding, but in the resurrected Christ who walks through hell in our place and emerges triumphant, guaranteeing our own resurrection and eternal life.

Alone, without God, darkness prevails. The natural state of the universe is darkness. That is true for all of us individually and spiritually as it is universally and physically. Sin leads to darkness. When light dims, darkness emerges and in the dark, we are lost and stumble. As said in Proverbs, when we “… leave the paths of uprightness (we) walk in the ways of darkness.” Ignorance and unbelief are also shrouded in darkness. Unbelief and disbelief are often used interchangeably, but they are different. Unbelief is the absence of belief, usually because of ignorance. Disbelief, however, is much darker; it is the unwillingness to believe or the rejection of truth. Unbelief is a vacuum; disbelief is rejection and, of the two, disbelief is far more devastating. Darkness and death never fall so hard and cold as for those who deny truth once revealed by the Holy Ghost. The degree of darkness is probably commensurate with the degree of light denied, but the darkness of disbelief is deeper than the darkness of unbelief or sin. It is one thing to fall short of the truth, but it is far worse to deny it. In Week 2 of our series, Everyday Disciple, Lead Pastor Jason Britt tackles a struggle everyone faces but few Christians want to admit: Doubt. We often label Thomas as "Doubting Thomas," letting one moment of uncertainty define his entire legacy. But the humanity of a disciple shows us that doubt isn't a deal-breaker—it can actually be the doorway to a deeper, more resilient faith. Whether your doubt is born from intellectual questions or, like Thomas, from "disappointed hope" and situational crisis, Jesus isn't intimidated by your uncertainty. He didn't shame Thomas for wanting proof; He provided His scars. Discover why a faith that has never been tested is a faith that can't be trusted, and how bringing your questions to Jesus moves your convictions from the "leaves" of public opinion to the "roots" of core belief.
