Sandy Alderson, New York Mets team president and Ray Sheehan, BBQ Buddha founder and cookbook author are exceptional and because of them, episode 128 is a Baseball and BBQ show you will not soon forget. Sandy Alderson is the New York Mets team president and previously served as the New York Mets general manager, putting together the team that played in the 2015 World Series.  Prior to that he enjoyed successful tenures as general manager for the Oakland Athletics and the chief executive officer for the San Diego Padres.  After graduating from Dartmouth College in 1969, Sandy joined the United States Marine Corps and served a tour of duty in Vietnam.  When his military service ended he attended Harvard Law School, became a lawyer, joined a law firm, and not more than five years later he followed one of the law firm's partners to the Oakland Athletics front office.  Sandy talks about what makes a good general manager,  being in the 1989 World Series when a powerful earthquake struck, and winning with a "small market" team.  Sandy also discusses what makes a good manager and baseball as it has changed during his time in the game.  After listening to Sandy you will have a much better appreciation for what it takes to run a Major League Baseball franchise and the special care which he gives to the many tasks he must handle.  Being curious drives Sandy and he says it has played a major part in his career, a career that has been absolutely incredible.         Ray Sheehan is the founder of BBQ Buddha, a multi-award winning, all natural barbecue sauce and spice blend company.  Ray is also the award-winning cookbook author of Award-Winning BBQ Sauces and How to Use Them:  The Secret Ingredient to Next-Level Smoking  and his newest book is Big Green Egg Basics from a Master Barbecuer.  We first met Ray in 2019 at the Atlantic City BBQ Expo and since then he has made numerous Baseball and BBQ show appearances.   Ray loves barbecue and has an immense wealth of knowledge which he is willing to share with anyone willing to listen.  In addition to running a sauce company and writing cookbooks, he is also a monthly contributor to Barbecue News Magazine.  Ray discusses his cooking experience, how he comes up with the wonderful recipes, and many of the things you never knew went into putting together a cookbook.  More about Ray and purchasing his wonderful sauces, rubs, and books can be found at https://bbqbuddha.com/ With baseball opening day comes tons of predictions and Jeff calls himself a very good guesser as he offers his picks for the season. We recommend you go to Fifth & Cherry, https://fifthandcherry.com for wonderful cutting boards, the Pandemic Baseball Book Club, https://www.pbbclub.com  to find many of the wonderful books we have featured as well as some additional swag, and BBQ Buddha, https://bbqbuddha.com/ for rubs and award winning sauces. We conclude the show with the song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. Remember the raccoon incident between Francisco Lindor and Jeff McNeil? Well, new reports suggest that no raccoon was actually involved. The guys breakdown the real incident, and explain how it might've effected all parties involved. Does Steve Cohen or Sandy Alderson deserve the most blame for how this front office search has gone? The guys share their thoughts on both, and how it's been a wild offseason thus far, with literally nothing to show from it to this point. Lastly the guys discuss what the Mets could learn from the Braves after their World Series season.

Sportswriter, collaborator, editor, publisher…Steve Kettmann has just about covered the publishing waterfront. Perhaps his biggest success on the ghostwriting front was his 2005 collaboration with outsized baseball slugger Jose Canseco, Juiced, which made headlines immediately upon publication for its revelations on the widespread use of anabolic steroids in our national pastime and became a #1 New York Times best-seller. After nearly a decade as a sportswriter for the San Francisco Chronicle, highlighted by several years as a beat writer covering the Oakland A's, it seems only natural that many of Kettmann's books have centered in and around baseball—including an uncredited collaboration with another of the game's most controversial figures, Pete Rose (Play Hungry), as well as his own One Day at Fenway, chronicling a single game between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees, and Baseball Maverick, an examination of the life and career of the noted front-office visionary Sandy Alderson. Kettmann has also written extensively about politics, including collaborations with former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (What A Party!) and the late Robert Byrd, long-time U.S. Senator from West Virginia (Letter to a New President), among others. In recent years, Kettmann has turned his talents to editing, compiling a headline-making collection of essays on the aftermath of the Trump presidency (Now What?: The Voters Have Spoken – Essays on Life After Trump); and, a heart-breaking and heart-lifting compilation of reminiscences inspired by the sudden death of his great friend Pedro Gomez, the ESPN reporter and one of the game's greatest ambassadors (Remember Who You Are: What Pedro Gomez Showed Us About Baseball and Life). Both books were published by Wellstone Books, the small, independent publishing arm of the Wellstone Center in the Redwoods, a writer's retreat in northern California founded by Kettmann and Sarah Ringler in 2012.   Over the course of his long and varied career, Kettmann has reported from twenty countries on five continents, for publications including the New York Times, New York Newsday, the Los Angeles Times, The New Republic, the Washington Monthly, GQ, and Wired.com. “I have a lot of passion for telling stories through collaborative writing,” Kettmann says—and in this episode of “As Told To” that passion comes through loud and clear, as he joins us to discuss what it means to capture the juice and essence of a celebrated subject and a life purposefully (and, in some cases, scandalously) lived.    Steve Kettmann: Twitter | Instagram This episode is sponsored by Libro.fm and Writer's Bone.
