Hour 1 The Rangers and Panthers game 1 is tonight and Boomer said it will be fast and furious. The Panthers are a bunch of agitators and throw a lot of pucks at the net. It's going to be a knock down drag out series. We asked Boomer if he's going to the Garden, but because of his early wakeup time, he's going to watch at home. C-Lo is in for Jerry and is here for his first update. He starts with a preview of Rangers/Panthers game 1. Sean Avery is not happy that Matt Rempe is likely out of the lineup. The Yankees lost to the Mariners again and the Mets lost in Cleveland again. Aaron Rodgers met the media and will be focused on only football once the regular season begins. In the final segment of the hour, Boomer and Gio golfed again yesterday. Boomer then had dinner with his daughter Sydney and Matt Martin and Boomer thinks Matt is rooting for the Rangers. A caller asked about this new offense Rob Saleh is supposedly installing for the Jets.  Hour 2 Gio said when CBS Sports Network wants us to talk about something, they run video of it during the breaks so we can see it. Today it's the sports Emmys, as CBS won a bunch of them. James Brown won an award as did Tracy Wolfson. We talked more about the wine bottle that Matt Martin gave Boomer. The bottle is a tribute to the Stanley Cup. C-Lo returns for an update, but first we talked about clams. We heard from Suzyn Waldman talking about the Mariners trident and she wondered if it was ‘bigger than the sausage'. C-Lo has a preview of Rangers/Panthers which gets underway tonight. Chris Russo is having a hard time with a hockey player's name. The Celtics took game 1 from the Pacers. In the final segment of the hour, competitive eater Kobayashi is retiring because of health concerns. We also talked about the Henry Winkler commercial we run here, about his father in laws' eyes.  Hour 3 Guy Adami from CNBC called in and he didn't like that Boomer had the Stanley Cup in the studio yesterday. We took a bunch of calls from Rangers fans. Boomer said Gio should be rooting for the Rangers, because when the Rangers win, Boomer's happy. When Boomer's happy, Gio gets to golf at bougie courses. The golf course they went to yesterday had the best shower that Gio has ever experienced. C-Lo returns for an update and starts with a preview of Rangers/Panthers. Sean Avery wants Matt Rempe in the lineup because of his toughness. C-Lo has a long sound from BT that sounds strange. The Yankees lost again to the Mariners. Gio wants C-Lo to rank the Yankees play by play guys and others in play for that job. In the final segment of the hour, we talked about Mets fans hating the Yankees and Jets fans hating the Giants and wondered why we hate the opposite NY team.  Hour 4 Leonard Marshall will be joining us at D'Jais on Friday for our kickoff to Summer. A caller wants to drive Boomer & Gio around in a convertible Corvette. We took a call from an Islanders fan that lives in the city. As a kid, Rangers fans threw ‘dirt bombs' at his window. C-Lo returns for his final update of the day and starts with a preview of Rangers/Panthers. Sandy Alderson was on the NY Post baseball podcast and talked about Billy Eppler. C-Lo has some audio of Spike Eskin vs the WIP callers. One called him a ‘vegan crackhead'. Aaron Rodgers met the media and was asked about the Robert Kennedy Jr. VP situation. The Moment of The Day involves Chris Russo having a hard time pronouncing an NHL player from Germany. In the final segment of the show, Matt Martin joins us to let us know if he is rooting for the Rangers and did he try to jinx Boomer with a bottle of wine.

Leadership Under Fire

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 13, 2023 54:06

The original broadcast date for this episode was July 30, 2020, and features host Patti Murphy and American baseball executive Sandy Alderson, general manager of the NY Mets at the time. Sandy currently serves as the President of the NY Mets and has been a front office executive in Major League Baseball for 40 years. Under his leadership, Major League Baseball teams have won six division titles, three American League pennants, one National League pennant and a World Series Championship. Sandy has held executive leadership roles with the Oakland Athletic, San Diego Padres, and New York Mets. Under his leadership as general manager, the Oakland Athletics played in three consecutive World Series from 1988 to 1990 and won the 1989 World Series. Sandy guided the 2015 NY Mets to a National League pennant and the World Series. He has also served as an executive for Major League Baseball on two separate occasions. Sandy was a principal architect of “Moneyball” in the Oaklands Athletics organization. Sandy reformed the way Athletics did business in virtually every regard--he revolutionized the ways in which the club scouted and identified talent, used analytics, approached the mental game, and conditioned their athletes. Sandy's approach to fielding a competitive team while at the helm of the Athletics was unconventional--decades later those once progressive tenets are now part of the game's orthodoxy in virtually every organization in professional baseball. Sandy has been a trusted source of insight and encouragement in shaping LUF's approach to systematically optimizing human performance in the fire service and ultra-competitive and/or lethal endeavors. LUF recently launched the LUF Human Performance “Team of Teams” – a collaborative network of human performance leaders from around North America. Though in its infancy, the LUF Team of Teams network will consist of several networked functional teams dedicated to exploring and advancing specific pillars of human performance. Each of the teams are named in honor of a human performance pioneer and we thought it would be fitting to name the program manager team “Team Alderson” in honor of Sandy's immense contributions. Leadership and service are in Sandy Alderson's bloodline. His father was a seasoned Army Air Corps and Air Force fighter pilot who flew in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Sandy graduated from Dartmouth at the height of the Vietnam War and did an unpopular thing, particularly as an Ivy League graduate--he took a commission in the United States Marine Corps. 2nd Lt Alderson soon found himself in Vietnam as a platoon leader of US Marine infantrymen. Sandy was commended for his combat leadership in Vietnam with a Bronze Star with a valor device. After returning home from Vietnam, Sandy received orders to the Marine Corps prestigious “8th and I” Barracks in Washington, DC, a billet customarily reserved for officers destined for great responsibility in the Marine Corps. Though Sandy unquestionably had a bright future in the Marine Corps, he opted to depart the service and attend law school at Harvard. In professional baseball circles, Sandy is revered as a maverick for his baseball intellect. But more importantly, he is respected and admired for his character and moral compass. Sandy has been recognized in recent months by the NY Friends of Vietnam Veterans Plaza and the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation for his leadership and civic virtue. The same character and conviction that was central to Sandy's leadership style as a leader of Marines in combat has been at the core of how he has conducted himself and business in professional baseball for the past four decades. Sandy's character is perhaps most evident in what the organizations under his charge do not just on the field, but also off the field. Under Sandy's leadership the NY Mets have consistently, and quietly, gone above and beyond in supporting our Nation's veterans, Gold Star families, and the families of fallen first responders--not because it is favorable for the brand, but because it is the right thing to do.

Hour 1: Boomer is out so it's Gio & Jerry today. Gio said he doesn't like to make a big deal about Father's Day. That way if he doesn't do enough for Mother's Day, he can always say, ‘well, we didn't do anything for Father's Day'. The Mets and Yankees have both been very boring lately. Giancarlo Stanton has been terrible since coming back from his injury. He still has 4 ½ years left on his contract. Gio said baseball in NY is boring and lifeless right now. The Mets actually had some offense yesterday but Carlos Carrasco was bad on the mound. C-Lo is in for Jerry today. He starts with the Mets losing to the Cardinals after coming back and tying the game at 7-7. The Yankees were swept by the Red Sox over the weekend. The Yankees only managed 9 hits in a double header yesterday. Wyndham Clark won the US Open. Jerry said there was no feeling that this was a major championship. Bradley Beal is headed to the Phoenix Suns. In the final segment of the hour, Ja Morant got a 25 game suspension. As Adam Silver said, how many games does it take to change behavior. Jerry said you have to threaten to take the game away from them forever.  Hour 2: Bob Huggins resigned as basketball coach at West Virginia because of a DUI arrest on Friday. A caller talked about young players with a ton of money and how suspending them a few games doesn't really do anything. Jerry talked about how young these guys are when they get a ton of money and thinks so many of them do a great job handling that, and there's only a handful that get into trouble like Ja Morant. We will probably do a show from Jets camp again this year. Jerry wondered if Gio would be star struck by Aaron Rodgers. He doesn't think so. C-Lo returns for an update but first we talked about having to give the doctor urine samples and how embarrassing that is. A caller said there's a professional prostate checker that goes into a classroom of medical students and they all check his prostate. The whole class. Gio said the guy has to be a sicko. In Boston a little kid threw a foul ball back and it really upset his brother so the Red Sox got him a signed ball. In the final segment of the hour, the Braves' Charlie Culberson's dad was supposed to throw out the first pitch on Father's day, but the DFA'd him before the game. Awkward. St. Louis Cardinals 2011 World Series and NCLS MVP, David Freese, declined an offer to join the Cardinals Hall of Fame.  Hour 3: We are doing our show from the Travelers Championship on Wednesday and Gio almost got to play in the pro-am. He was then invited to play mini-golf with the children. Bummer. Would Gio really be able to tee off with a driver in front of a crowd who he could potentially hit? We also talked about the US Open from this weekend. There was a plane getting overhead shots and it was making a lot of noise on tv.  C-Lo returned for an update and Buck Showalter talked about Mark Vientos being sent down in order to bring Pete Alonso back from the IL. We also talked about Tiki Barber having a 20 handicap in golf and Gio can't believe he's that bad. The Yankees got swept in Boston including a doubleheader yesterday. Karl Ravech made a bunch of errors in one call of the college world series. In the final segment of the hour, the Astros have lost 4 in a row which means they will probably sweep the Mets. The Yankees continue to play poorly when Aaron Judge is not in the lineup.  Hour 4: The Yankees fans are bored by the way the team is playing right now. Last year we had the Aaron Judge HR chase, and this year we have Jake Bauers. Last year at this time, both the Mets and Yankees were in the mix and doing well.
