"A healthy person has a hundred wishes, but a sick person has only one" Another wise one man once said, 'One day you will look like a soggy tea-bag, if you are lucky!'. That man was near-death survivor turned mobility and movement guru Adam Richardson, this week's ANWOB guest. In this episode, Adam Richardson reveals his transformative journey from Intensive Care to an enlightened view on what is important, leading him to become a social media sensation and movement and mobility guru. Adam shares his personal battle with meningitis, the life-altering lessons it taught him about mortality, and how it fuelled his commitment to movement. In this episode, you'll learn simple practical exercises that can prevent injury and keep you moving freely for life. Adam's journey from near-death to mobility mastery is packed with insights you won't want to miss. So many people have body hang ups, but it's the only body we'll ever have, so it is bonkers not to treasure it for as long as possible, and not get fixated on how it may or may not look to other people. This conversation blends philosophy, fitness, and Adam's signature cheeky charm. I hope you enjoy listening! If you have ever doubted your ability to change the course of your path, by any degree, we can guarantee that this conversation will change your mind. At 24, John McAvoy was serving a life sentence at Belmarsh prison for armed robbery. Today, he is a Nike athlete, world record holder, key note speaker and dedicated to changing young people's lives through trail running. We unpick his momentous journey, which took a u-turn after discovering an unlikely talent for indoor rowing, which he took up as a means to escape his cell (located next to Abu Hamza) for a little extra time each week. This ticket to a morsel of freedom resulted in John breaking multiple indoor rowing world records and a pivotal shift in his life ambitions. Previously committed to a life of crime, John became committed to a life of sport and promised to become an elite athlete on his release. He did just this, and much more. Alongside competing in ironman races and ultramarathons, delivering keynote speaking and authoring books, John founded the Alpine Run Project, an incredible Nike-backed initiative which takes young people from inner cities to the Alps, where they are trained by professional coaches to run in the iconic UTMB race. Georgie talks to John about his journey back to the outside world and the people who changed his life. He is the perfect example of why giving others a second chance could make a difference and why you should use your experience to help others. With the right circumstance, people and opportunity John believes everyone has the capacity to change and in turn make a difference. The power of sport did that for him. Hosted on Acast. Today's guest John McAvoy is a Nike Athlete and a motivational speaker who inspires young people to live a good, and honest life. However, John's story is probably unlike anything you've heard before…When John was young, he grew up in an environment of organised crime, leading to a life of armed robbery, and 10 years behind bars at a high-security prison. His “role models” back in the day, led him to believe being behind bars was “just a way of life”. Everything was about money, the acquisition of wealth and disobeying authority. They told him that if he went to prison and started behaving, then the system had got him. However, whilst in his cell John decided he wanted to feel like a proper human being so he decided to spend his days educating himself by reading books from the prison librarian, and started exercising one push-up at a time…John's new exercise regime led him to break both British and World records whilst in prison, and in turn he's found redemption through the power of sport. He now lives in the Alps and has forged a life as an endurance athlete and speaker who is committed to using his story of rehabilitation to help and inspire others to change their lives for the better. In his own words, John feels completely detached from who he was in the past, and that is in itself, is a very moving story."The important thing is not what one is born with but what use one makes of that equipment" - AdlerLooking to buy a RunPod t-shirt?: Go here: Linktr.ee/runpod
It is easy to take credit for our successes, and look down on others for their 'failings', without acknowledging the huge number of interrelated factors and events that first had to happen for them to come into being. We don't choose our parents, our genetics, our personality traits, our talents, the time and place where we are born, or the experiences that shape us. If we really consider all of these things – and truly recognise how little say we have in the formative elements of our life – it is inevitably humbling. And on the flipside, it can allow us to have more understanding and empathy for people who have lost their way. The famous psychologist Albert Ellis spoke about judging behaviour as good or bad – but not judging people, and that really points to this. One person who powerfully illustrates this point is the Nike sponsored endurance athlete John McAvoy – who previously was sentenced to life in prison in his early twenties for armed robbery, before turning his life around.Full Length Episode: https://www.simonmundie.com/blog/john-mcavoy-the-power-of-environmentMyTwitter: https://twitter.com/simonmundieInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/simon-mundie-89379114/And for the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - featuring three of the best Life Lessons from four years and 200 of these conversations - head to simonmundie.com (where you can also drop me an email)Please do share this episode - it makes a big difference in helping people find this podcast.Thank you. It can be easy to judge other people for negative actions and decisions, but the truth is we can't know the circumstances that led to them. We are not nearly as in control of our lives as we like to think. People don't necessarily like to hear that, but we don't choose the family we are born into, our genes, our personality traits, the influences we are surrounded by while growing up and so on. Where we are is basically a result of a vast web of interconnected occurrences and events over which we have not control. To think we wouldn't behave as others do if we were in their shoes, with their traits and upbringing, is a massive stretch – and so, I would suggest – the less tightly we can hold on to judgements of other people – the better.John McAvoy is currently a Nike athlete, however he was previously a high profile armed robber who found redemption through the power of sport. If you're someone who actually believes that people don't change, prepare for a major mindset shift.Meet John McAvoy.Returning for his 2nd appearance on the podcast, John is positive transformation rendered in human form—and his story is one of the most compelling, improbable, inspirational, and cinematic tales you will ever be privileged to hear. The McAvoy name might ring a bell for longtime listeners. He first appeared on the show a little over four years ago on episode #379—a conversation that ranks among the most memorable and impactful in the ten-year history of the show. For those unfamiliar, John is a former high-profile armed robber, one of Britain's most successful career criminals and most wanted men. His reckoning was delivered in the form of a double life sentence (the 2nd of 2 prison stints) on the notorious Belmarsh high-security wing—a space he shared with extremist cleric Abu Hamza and the 7/7 bombers. To the rational outsider, John's future was bleak. But a chance encounter with prison gym indoor rowing machine would ultimately change his life forever. In short shrift, John ended up breaking a cluster of British and World indoor rowing records while incarcerated, and upon parole, began forging a new life as a professional endurance athlete.Today, John is a Nike-sponsored Ironman athlete living in the Alps, a vegan (not my doing—I promise), and a stalwart mouthpiece for prison reform who has testified at 10 Downing Street. But above all, he's a staunch advocate for the inherent power we all possess to course correct the trajectory of our lives, no matter how dire the circumstances.I was in London recently and couldn't resist the opportunity to reconvene with this legend. This episode is old school—no video, just two guys vibing across a kitchen table. We pick right up where we last left off four years prior and dive even deeper into John's remarkable story to further mine the extraordinary, latent potential we all hold to better ourselves.Watch: YouTube.Read: Show notes.Today's Sponsors:Whoop: WHOOP.com Birch Living: birchiving.com/richroll.Express VPN: expressvpn.com/RICHROLL.Daily Harvest: dailyharvest.com/RICHROLL.Seed: seed.com/RICHROLL.As you'll soon discover, John's greatest heist isn't a bank—it's his life.Peace + Plants,Rich Hosted on Acast. John McAvoy's biological father passed away shortly before he was born, leaving him to be raised by a community of women. As a child, John loved history, was bright and ambitious and wanted to leave his mark on the world. He also happened to be Micky McAvoy's nephew, a notorious criminal and the mastermind behind Brinks-Mat, the biggest gold heist in UK history. Soon what started as a childhood dream to own British Telecom turned into a career as an armed robber. But John turned it all around in prison where he found a love for sport. This is the inspiring and unlikely story of a man who went from spending one full year in solitary confinement, or 'segregation' as it's called in the UK to being a Nike sponsored athlete. In this episode of Bad People, Dr Julia Shaw and Sofie Hagen discuss The Nelson Mandela Rules and the concept of ‘engineered segregation'.CREDITS Presenters: Dr Julia Shaw and Sofie Hagen Producer: Simona Rata Music: Matt Chandler Editor: Rami Tzabar Academic Consultant for The Open University: James Munro #BadPeople_BBC Commissioning Assistant Producer: Adam Eland Commissioning Executive: Dylan HaskinsBad People is produced in partnership with The Open University and is a BBC Audio Science Production for BBC Sounds.
CAUTION ADVISED: this podcast contains swearing. Is there a change you'd like to make in your life? Something you're desperate to overcome, but can't see how? Or a goal you're scared to aim for, because it feels too far off? My guest on this week's podcast might just convince you to have a go. He's John McAvoy, endurance athlete extraordinaire, author and the man with one of the most inspirational stories I have ever heard. John was born into a notorious crime family and has served a total of 10 years in some of the UK's highest security prisons, for armed robbery. He was raised into a life of organised crime and, as a teenager, it was the only career path he could see for himself. In fact, he bought his first gun at the age of 16 and very quickly became one of the UK's most wanted men. How did he go from serving two life sentences to breaking British and World sporting records and giving talks to schoolchildren? From violent criminal to opinion leader, invited to 10 Downing Street for his views on the justice system? You'll have to listen and find out. Not only is every part of John's story worthy of a Hollywood movie script, the lessons and life advice he shares are relevant to each and every one of us. Whether you're interested in his rowing and Ironman success, how he transformed his moral code or how he overcame adversity, this really is a compelling conversation. I know you're going to be as gripped by John as I was. Thanks to our sponsors:https://www.vivobarefoot.com/livemorehttps://www.athleticgreens.com/livemorehttps://www.leafyard.com/livemoreOrder Dr Chatterjee's new book Happy Mind, Happy Life: UK version: https://amzn.to/304opgJ, US & Canada version: https://amzn.to/3DRxjgpShow notes available at https://drchatterjee.com/262Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. CAUTION: Contains swearing and themes of an adult nature. This is the final podcast episode of the year - I have decided to take a short break from the podcast over Christmas to switch off and relax with my family and it's that sentiment that has influenced the topic of this final compilation episode. This is the time of year where many of us take a pause, spend time with our loved ones and think of others. So, I thought this was the perfect time to celebrate the magic that happens when community comes together. This week, my team and I have put together some of the very best inspirational clips around this topic.Humans are not designed to be alone. We've evolved to live our lives as individual members of a large supportive group. Back when the human brain was doing much of its evolution, we hunted together, we ate together and we sat around a campfire in the evenings and talked together, swapping stories, songs and smiles. We're designed to survive and thrive by being connected to one another. This is why we feel joyful and safe when we‘re getting along well with the people we share our lives with. But our modern, busy, disconnected lives can do great damage to these connections and our health.A rising number of us are suffering from loneliness and this is not only affecting our mental health, but also our physical health. In fact, high social stress is an even bigger risk factor for dying from chronic disease than physical inactivity, alcohol intake and smoking put together! The good news is though, there is plenty we can do to build new connections and nurture the important relationships in our lives.Research has shown time and time again, that by giving to others and to our community, we can increase our own happiness, as well as the happiness of others. In today's episode, you will hear some heart-warming stories and uplifting advice about the healing power of community from some of my former guests including: Gabor Mate, Johann Hari, Dan Buettner, Tommy Wood, Laurie Santos, Julian Abel, Pippa Grange, The Happy Pear, Kelly McGonigal and John McAvoy. My team and I really enjoyed putting this episode together for you. I hope you enjoy listening, and I hope it inspires you to live a more contented and connected life. This episode includes clips from: Episode 37 Gabor MateEpisode 94 Johann Hariepisode 67 Dan BuettnerEpisode 167 Tommy WoodEpisode 138 Julian AbelEpisode 151 Laurie SantosEpisode 38 Happy PearEpisode 126 Pippa GrangeEpisode 109 Kelly McGonigalEpisode 91 John McAvoyThanks to our sponsors: https://leafyard.com/livemore https://vivobarefoot.com/livemore http://www.blublox.com/livemore Show notes available at https://drchatterjee.com/226DISCLAIMER: The content in the podcast and on this webpage is not intended to constitute or be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Meet John McAvoy, an endurance athlete with a difference. In this episode, Geraint and Tom chat to the former armed robber about how a rowing machine changed the course of his life, how he broke a world record from inside a prison gym and what his bike has done for him since. And we get the inside story on the miraculous recovery of Geraint's stolen bike! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
I took some time today to listen to the high-performance podcast with Jake Humphrey and Professor Damian Hughes as they discussed the life and journey of John McAvoy from “high-performance gangster” to a “high-performance Nike sponsored triathlon athlete and indoor rowing world record holder”. Interestingly where John's life made a pivot was when in his cell he discovered indoor rowing, perhaps he also discovered just how much goes into perfecting the rowing stroke, mind-altering commitment. John McAvoy now holds a number of indoor rowing records, yet the 2k in his age group is still an incomplete challenge. He learnt to row at London Rowing Club for a time, but never took that forward, a chance to row at Henley or beyond not a goal of his, perhaps the reason why is in the podcast when he mentions that he might not be able to cope with a rowing coach giving him feedback. That said he does now have a coach for triathlon training. I think what indoor rowing gives people is a focus, a small thing to focus on, but because it involves 86% of all your muscles and I'd say requires 100% of your mind indoor rowing can “fill” every minute of your waking day. It's interesting and I discuss the podcast and some thoughts on my podcast. CAUTION: This episode contains themes of an adult nature. Before he came to see me today, my guest John McAvoy took a walk around Strangeways prison. For a former inmate, that might sound an unlikely way to start the day. But for John, it's the sort of thing he does on a regular basis, to remind himself where he's come from. This is John's third appearance on the podcast, but for those new to his story, he was a teenager raised into a life of organised crime. By the age of 18 he was one of the UK's most notorious armed robbers and was sentenced to two life sentences. John spent 10 years in maximum-security prisons but during that time he transformed his life, describing his release as a ‘rebirth'.Today John's not just a record-breaking, Nike-sponsored athlete, he's a man on a mission to make amends and make sure no other child goes that same route into crime. Through initiatives like his Open Doors campaign, to give young people access to school sports facilities during holidays, he's inspiring new generations to rewrite their stories. But it's not just youngsters John's experience and wisdom speaks to. He'll be too modest to agree with me, but I hear a spirituality and philosophy in his words that we can all benefit from. Our deep and honest discussion covers John's move to the Alps to live a simple life, rejecting the wealth he could easily command. We talk about connection, forgiveness, the importance of not judging people – and we even ponder the meaning of life.I'm struck by how people like John, who have achieved incredible self-transformation, are the perfect figureheads to help inspire and create positive change in society. He's a master of storytelling who uses his own, unique experience to give us access to new perspectives. I really hope you enjoy this conversation. At Wimbledon this year, newcomer Emma Radacanu reached the fourth round, but had to withdraw with breathing difficulties. It was - it seemed - a 'bad' thing. There was concern for her welfare, and questions as to whether it would impact her future Grand Slam chances.Emma then proceeded to produce one of the all time great Grand Slam performances on the way to winning the US Open as a qualifier - without dropping a set. That experience at Wimbledon hadn't been 'bad' after all, it had been a learning experience. This is something we can all relate to. An event happens that seems 'bad' but later turns out to be anything but. Take John McAvoy - who was sentenced to life in prison for armed robbery - and said he would rather die than be arrested. How he says being sent to jail was the best thing that could have happened to him. The point is - we don't know whether something is good or bad, so better to avoid the temptation to rush to judgement and accept life as it is.**Follow me:on instagram https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/on twitter https://twitter.com/simonmundieAnd for the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - featuring three of the best Life Lessons from three years and more than 150 of these interviews - head to simonmundie.comFull episode with John McAvoy here: https://play.acast.com/s/dont-tell-me-the-score-with-simon-mundie/howourenvironmentshapesus-johnmcavoy See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Judging behaviour but not the person with the ex-armed robber reformed through sport in high-security prison.Having grown up around some of the most notorious criminals in the country, McAvoy spent ten years in the UK's highest security prisons – where he had an epiphany that transformed his outlook and identity. McAvoy – now a Nike-sponsored Iron Man athlete – proves that a leopard can change its spots, and that while we can judge someone's behaviour, we may want to reconsider being too quick to judge the person, because the environment we find ourselves in has a profound impact on our life choices. I would be hugely grateful if you could find time to leave DTMTS a rating (ideally 5* and a kind review if you have time). It would make a huge difference.@simonmundie**For the newsletter - head to simonmundie.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
What a story! Where to start? A 22 year old armed robber who ended up in highest security prison with two life sentences. Whilst in prison he broke two world records, eventually leading to becoming an ultra athlete. Now Nike sponsored and to top it all off he’s gone vegan!John has an amazing outlook on life, and is a true example of how the positive impact of sport and movement can have on your well being and even the choices you make.“If there is hope for me there is hope for everyone, I was in the deepest darkest hole you can be in and I managed to turn my life around.”In total John served 10 years, one of these years in solitary confinement. He has been approached by multiple directors and producers for the rights to tell his story, however John is reluctant to let it fall into the wrong hands. “When I got out of prison I promised myself money would never be my god ever again, I would never make decisions again based around money… film can glamorise crime, so I understand if you glorify criminality to people, some people can get sucked in.”So many takeaways from this episode. Really hope you enjoy it as much as we did.Big love,Dave & Steve See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Lessons from the ex-armed robber reformed through sport. John McAvoy spent ten years in some of the UK's highest security prisons, having grown up around some of the most notorious criminals in the country. He even chose to spend a year in solitary confirnement rather than be "broken by the system". But while in prison John had an epiphany that transformed his outlook and identity. He discovered a talent for endurance sport, and after having broken world records at indoor rowing while in prison, John successfully turned his life around and is now an elite Ironman athlete sponsored by Nike. Having valued money above all else when growing up, now his priority is to help others, through charities like Greenhouse sports and by going into schools and prisons to give talks to young people. John proves that a leopard can change its spots, and that while we can judge behaviour, we may want to reconsider being too quick to judge the person, because the enviroment we find ourselves in has a profound impact on our life choices. @simonmundie

This week we are joined by John McAvoy, a former armed robber and one of Britain's most wanted men. Born into a crime family, he's had two spells in prison and ultimately found redemption through the power of sport. Given two life sentences and given assurances by the justice system that he'd never change and always be a danger to society John started his stay in one of Britain's highest security prisons. John's story is fascinating for so many reasons, but ultimately because it highlights the importance and power of sport and the power of opportunity - the difference between having it or not. Many of us are struggling to adjust to this new way of life. Having spent 24 hours a day in a 12ft by 8ft prison cell for a whole year, my guest on this week’s podcast knows more about isolation than most of us. You may remember John McAvoy from episode 91 of the podcast, where he shared his inspirational story of going from serving two life sentences to breaking British and World sporting records whilst in prison. Now a free man, he is Nike sponsored athlete and gives talks to schoolchildren and has spoken at 10 Downing Street. On this podcast, John shares what he learnt from his time in isolation – lessons which we can all apply in our lives, especially now. He explains how he maintained a sense of control over his life by keeping himself mentally and physically fit and why keeping a routine, staying active and keeping ourselves present in the moment are more important now, than ever.John invites us to think of our current situation as an amazing opportunity to re-evaluate our lives and explore new things with the new found extra time. If we look at what John achieved whilst in a small isolated prison, imagine what we can all achieve in our own lives right now. As John says, this could be your moment of growth. Finally, John shares his invaluable top tips that I know will help many of you bring a sense of calm and control into your lives. Whenever I speak to John, I come out of the conversation a better and more enlightened person than I was when we started, after listening to this, I hope you do too. ECP 028 How does your environment shape what you do? In this episode, I take a look at Rangan Chatterjee's interview with John McAvoy. John's McAvoy transformed his life from convicted armed robber to elite Nike sponsored athlete. I consider what lessons we can extract from his experiences. I personally took so much away from this interview. I've pulled out five areas to share: · When our environment is all-consuming it's hard to see let alone question anything different. · Different role models create a different impact. · There can be a real benefit in not having benchmarks. · Applying talents to different things can generate very different results. · Judge people cautiously I'd love to hear your thoughts and feedback - damian@effectivechallenge.com Please share the podcast with friends, colleagues and family. I'd love to continue increasing its impact in 2020. Many thanks in advance. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/effective-challenge/message

On this episode of "By Any Means Necessary" hosts Jacquie Luqman and Sean Blackmon are joined by Saman Pelast, Vice President of the US Palestinian Council, to explain how the supposed peace deal put forth by Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu this week would essentially codify Israeli apartheid as it rejects three main Palestinian demands (Israeli withdrawal, a restoration of pre-1967 borders and the right of self-determination), the parallels he sees between the BDS movement today and the anti-apartheid movement in the 80s which helped topple the apartheid South African government, and why the timing of the deal's announcement seems to reflect cynical political maneuvering by Trump and Netanyahu. In the second segment, Sean and Jacquie are joined by Italian anthropologist and architect Franco La Cecla to talk about his latest book, "Against Urbanism," the re-orientation of contemporary architecture away from shared social benefit and towards individualism, the importance of branding in various cities' attempts to "revitalize" cities and displace working people, and the role of urban populations in the fight between haves and have-nots which is playing out in public spaces across the world. In the third segment, Jacquie Luqman and Sean Blackmon are joined by retired foreign service officer John McAvoy to talk about his legal battle to recoup tens of millions of dollars from the government of Honduras after they refused to compensate his firm for rebuilding dozens of water and sanitation facilities there in the wake of Hurricane Mitch in 1998, why USAID is lying and the Department of Justice is fighting its own citizens on behalf of a foreign government, and what the US's legal rationale—that speaking up for its citizens could have “negative effects upon the diplomatic relationship between the United States and Honduras”—reveals about the priorities of the ruling elite.Later in the show, Jacquie and Sean are joined by Ben Norton, co-host of the Moderate Rebels podcast and a journalist with The Grayzone, to talk about how Elizabeth Warren's plan to criminalize "disinformation" is actually censorship in disguise, how fear-mongering over Russian electoral interference minimizes the disenfranchisement of marginalized communities and other actual threats to election integrity, why Juan Guaido's global tour is stopping in Miami and whether his constant stream of selfies with world leaders will make up for a total lack of support among Venezuelans, the role of left-liberals in manufacturing consensus for US-backed coups in Latin America, why the political establishment demonizes the popular leftist government of Nicaragua as an authoritarian dictatorship while praising illegitimate but friendly right-wing regimes elsewhere in the region, and how the coronavirus scare shows anti-Chinese racism is not just tolerated but encouraged by imperialism.

“I’ve nearly been shot dead by the police – twice. I’ve been to court and handed a life sentence at 24 years old. I’ve been around some of the most dangerous men in the country, actual psychopaths… When I race, I feel tremendously honored that I can compete.”John McAvoyI can say without equivocation John McAvoy's story of metamorphosis is one of the most compelling, improbable, inspirational, and cinematic tales I have ever heard.Born into a notorious London crime family — think The Sopranos meets The Krays — John is a former high profile armed robber who bought his first gun at 16 and quickly became one of Britain's most successful career criminals and most-wanted men. But it took two spells in prison and a close friend's death amidst a heist gone awry to birth a desire to change — redemption he ultimately discovered through the transformative power of sport.Pulling one of the most improbable 180-degree life transformations of all time, John's greatest heist isn't a bank — it's his life. While serving a double life sentence on the Belmarsh high security wing — space he shared with extremist cleric Abu Hamza and the 7/7 bombers — John decided to take a spin on the prison gym's indoor rowing machine. That experience revealed a unmistakable fact — John's freakish natural aptitude for endurance matched only by an inhuman ability to suffer. The epiphany was miraculous. And it would change his life forever. In short shrift, John broke a cluster of British and World indoor rowing records while in prison. Upon parole, he began forging a new life as a professional endurance athlete. Today, John is the world's only Nike sponsored Ironman athlete, a stalwart mouthpiece for prison reform and a staunch advocate for the inherent power we all possess to course correct the trajectory of one's life, no matter how dire the circumstances. If John's story doesn't inspire you to be better, then you might want to check yourself for a heartbeat. In all honesty, I cant remember being so excited about sharing a podcast conversation. I sincerely hope the exchange inspires you to rethink your potential and the physical, mental and emotional limits you impose upon your inherent ability to live the life you desire.Peace + Plants,Listen, Watch & SubscribeApple Podcasts | YouTube | Soundcloud | Stitcher | GooglePodcastsThanks to this week’s sponsorsFully: From the popular Jarvis adjustable standing desks to their every-which-way active office chairs, to their many movement supporting accessories — anti-fatigue mats, treadmill desks and more — Fully is all about helping you bring more movement, energy and joy to your work and life.
