The legendary guitarist reflected on Kiss's merchandising over-commercialization and his past substance abuse issues. Frehley expressed openness to a Kiss reunion if given equal production control. The post Back in the Hammerjacks groove with Ace Frehley of KISS in 1990 first appeared on Baltimore Positive WNST.
In the summer of 1987, the music scene was shifting: the larger-than-life sounds of glam rock and heavy metal were at their peak, and the neon-drenched days of the MTV era were in full swing. Hair metal dominated, with bands like Def Leppard, Whitesnake, and Bon Jovi ruling the charts and radio. Rock fans were riding high on guitar solos, power ballads, and the theatrical spectacle of live shows. Amidst this, a familiar name from a different era, Ace Frehley, the original “Spaceman” of Kiss, reemerged with Frehley's Comet—a solo album that would go on to become a cult favorite, bridging his past as a member of Kiss with his fresh start as a solo artist. The Road to Frehley's CometFrehley's Comet, released in April 1987, was Ace's first attempt to break out independently since his 1978 solo album with Kiss. This time, however, it wasn't just a side project—it was an opportunity for Ace to stand alone. After a rocky exit from Kiss, characterized by struggles with addiction and brushes with death (including a notorious car accident in his DeLorean that he references in the track “Rock Soldiers”), Ace had a point to prove. With support from Eddie Trunk, who helped secure him a spot on the Megaforce label, Ace was back in the game, determined to reclaim his legacy in rock.A Blend of Grit and MelodyAs the Dig Me Out hosts delved into Frehley's Comet, they highlighted its unique blend of Ace's signature gritty style mixed with melodic, almost pop-rock elements that made it different from a typical heavy metal album. Tracks like “Rock Soldiers” served as a rallying cry, a self-reflective anthem about overcoming personal demons, while “Into the Night,” a mid-tempo stomp, showcased Ace's ability to craft a compelling hook that stuck with listeners long after the song ended. The hosts also noted how “Stranger in a Strange Land” exemplified Ace's unmistakable style: raw yet melodic guitar riffs combined with a vocal delivery that was uniquely his own, both rough and endearing. The Todd Howarth FactorWhat made Frehley's Comet stand out wasn't just Ace's return. The album also benefited from the contributions of Todd Howarth, whose more polished, AOR-style vocals and songwriting contrasted with Ace's grittier approach. Tracks like “Calling to You” and “Something Moved” reflected this dynamic, adding a surprising level of variety to the album. This blending of styles made Frehley's Comet feel like more than just a solo project—it felt like a band effort, and the result was a sound that was both nostalgic and refreshingly modern for its time.Embracing the Strange and the NostalgicDespite its strengths, Frehley's Comet isn't without its quirks. Some tracks, like “Dolls,” with its odd, almost creepy lyrics about mannequins or inanimate “dolls,” veered into strange territory. And while songs like “We Got Your Rock” aimed to pump up the listener, the lyrics felt somewhat clichéd even for the '80s, as the hosts pointed out with humor. Yet, these moments only added to the album's charm, capturing a time when rock didn't take itself too seriously, embracing both the raw and the ridiculous in equal measure.Legacy of a Comeback AlbumLooking back, Frehley's Comet isn't just a product of its era but a testament to Ace Frehley's resilience and talent. The album succeeded in reminding fans why they fell in love with the “Spaceman” in the first place while introducing him to a new generation eager for guitar heroes. While Ace may have never reached the commercial heights of Kiss in his solo career, Frehley's Comet endures as a cult classic, cherished by fans who appreciate its rough edges, varied styles, and unapologetic rock ethos. For Ace, it was more than just an album—it was a comeback, a declaration that, indeed, the Ace was back.Songs in this Episode* Intro - We Got Your Rock * 21:55 - Stranger in a Strange Land * 25:14 - Breakout * 32:17 - Rock Soliders * 37:28 - Into the Night * 42:05 - Dolls * Outro - Calling to YouMake Your Metal Voice Heard! In our quest to explore the depths of 80s metal, we rely on you, our listeners. y 1989, Ace Frehley had been out of KISS for 7 years and during that time he'd maintained a debaucherous lifestyle including car accidents and very little in the way of new music. Finally Eddie Trunk helped get him signed to Megaforce and got him working. Frehley's Comet released 2 albums in 1987 & !988 (Frehley's Comet, Second Sighting) trying to reestablish himself on the rock circuit. And while 1989's Trouble Walkin' was a solid offering for the time it was released, looking back it's easy to see why it didn't crack the top 100 in the US. Though Ace and Richie Scarlet put together some catchy, heavy riffs with some signature Ace guitar licks, Ace's vocal need help. Left alone they're too bare unless they have the sing-a-long chorus behind him. Shot Full of Rock Five Card Stud and the title track are great straight ahead rockers...until the vocals kick in. As usual, Ace's lyrics are somewhere between silly and bad. But we're Ace fans darnit! So we like hearing what he does. Fractured III connects the record to his 1978 solo and first Frehley's Comet album with a solid instrumental. But lyrics on songs like Back To School, 2 Young 2 Die and Five Card Stud illustrate why KISS had to reign him in on those records. And the mystery is why did Ace cover Hide Your Heart, a song written by Paul Stanley, Desmond Child & Holly Knight, which was originally sung by Bonnie Tyler and that KISS would feature on their album Hot In The Shade? It's a head scratcher but maybe Ace was ready to show his old bandmates that he can still rock, even with their tracks. But as college students, we loved this one and wanted to celebrate Ace as Trouble Walkin' turns 35! BRUCE KULICK 'THE LOST INTERVIEWS' with RAY SHASHO EPISODE 17 INTERVIEWED JUNE 22ND 2015 Got to Get Back is the latest release by KKB, a 1974 power trio that featured lead guitarist Bruce Kulick, singer/bassist Mike Katz, and drummer Guy Bois. It's a hard driving/progressive rock sound reminiscent to the styles of Cream, YES, and King Crimson. The band may have even become legendary if it hadn't been for their lack of professional guidance. The title track …“Got to Get Back” is a brand new song. Kulick says … “I thought the way we could celebrate it the best after 40 years was actually to record a new song with the same guys, I gave Mike a riff that I thought was similar to the kind of progressive /metal trio style we did back in 1974 and he ran with it and turned into a terrific song.” Got to Get Back by KKB is a timeless gem performed by three first-rate musicians. (5) Stars! BRUCE KULICK was a veteran guitarist for “The Hottest Band In The World” … KISS! It was during the unmasking period for the legendary rockers who officially appeared in public without makeup in an appearance on MTV in 1983. Kulick would join KISS as their fourth lead guitarist in less than three years and holds title to the longest continuous tenure of anyone other than Simmons and Stanley (September 1984 to August 1996). Although Kulick never wore the band's iconic makeup, he says …“It keeps my era a little bit more unique and sacred in a sense and I'm there to waive the flag for it.” Bruce Kulick played on (5) KISS studio albums … Asylum, Crazy Nights, Hot in the Shade, Revenge, Carnival of Souls: The Final Sessions. Kulick also appeared on Alive III and KISS Unplugged. The song "I Walk Alone" from Carnival of Souls: The Final Sessions is the only KISS track to feature Kulick as lead vocalist. To date, Kulick is featured on more than (20) KISS releases. The ‘Farewell Tour' featured original KISS members Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss. Frehley left the group after the tour but Kulick was not asked to return as their lead guitarist; instead Tommy Thayer became the new spaceman for KISS. Kulick did however continue to work with the band by contributing on several albums. In 1997, Kulick formed ‘Union' with lead vocalist/guitarist John Corabi (Mötley Crüe, Ratt), drummer Brent Fitz (Slash, Vince Neil), and bassist James Hunting (David Lee Roth, Eddie Money). ‘Union' released (2) studio albums, two singles: "Old Man Wise" and "October Morning Wind," and a live album. Since 2001, Bruce Kulick has been the lead guitarist for Grand Funk Railroad. The original band was a power trio that featured current band members Don Brewer and Mel Schacher. I had the great please of chatting with Bruce Kulick recently about his latest release Got to Get Back with his first band KKB … Becoming a longtime guitarist with KISS … Playing with Grand Funk Railroad … Touring … Tommy Thayer … A new solo album? … The shock of being shot …My infamous ‘Field of Dreams' question … and much-much more! Here's my interview with the monstrous guitar player for KKB, Meatloaf, Blackjack w/Michael Bolton, KISS, Union, and Grand Funk Railroad … BRUCE KULICK. Support us on PayPal!

This week Tom & Zeus review the 1983 pivotal album, "Lick It Up" This was KISS' 11th studio album and the 23rd KISS studio album reviewed by SIOL. Lick It Up was the first studio album from KISS without the makeup. Before the release, the band was on MTV and unmasked with MTV VJ the late great J.J. Jackson and premiered the video for Lick It Up. This was the first (and last) credited album with Vinnie Vincent as a member. First not to have Ace Frehley credited as a member. First KISS album without any outside songwriters credited on an album. The album was produced by Michael James Jackson, who had just produced the previous album, Creatures Of The Night and the four original tracks on the compilation Killers. This was a critical point in KISStory. The band taking off the makeup was a big gamble. However, Paul kept thinking the audience was listening to KISS with their eyes and they needed to make this change. Now without the makeup, KISS was competing with their contemporaries on a even playing field. How did they do? Well, the album brought them back to not just gold status, but platinum. The addition of Vinnie Vincent was a difference maker. His guitar playing was great, but the energy he brought with his songwriting was just so evident. He co-wrote 8 of the 10 songs on the album, including the legendary title track, Lick It Up. The guys discuss the album cover, the videos and make a few bold statements about the album and the band with Vinnie Vincent. As usual the guys breakdown and analyze the tracks and rank the songs SIOL style. As always, they then compare the album and album cover and rank it against the previous studio albums reviewed. So tune in to find out if All Hell's Breakin' Loose after this album gets discussed and ranked and if the partnership of Frehley & Cusano have to file Chapter 11... Kiss första skiva firar femtio år och det är en av sakerna jag pratar med självaste Ace Frehley om. Vi pratar även om hans nya skiva, 70talets excesser och Frehley's Comet.
Shifty's biggest guitar hero joins the podcast to run down his unique lead picking on the 1977 Love Gun hit. Ace Frehley is the reason Chris Shiflett picked up a guitar in the first place, so it's only natural that Shifty invites his original tone teacher onto the pod to recap one his iconic solos. Frehley, saddled with a classic black-and-cream triple-humbucker Les Paul, shares that “Shock Me” was the first KISS track on which he took lead vocal duty. The first time he sang it live, he remembers, was in front of 18,000 screaming fans at Madison Square Garden. As Frehley explains, that was quite a step up from how he recorded the vocals in the studio for Love Gun: lying flat on the floor on his back, racked with stage fright. Frehley recalls that he ripped most of his solos through a dimed Marshall stack, and always on the bridge pickup. Turns out, he never went for pedals or boards because he'd trip over them onstage. “Wearing those boots?” he snorts. “Forget about it. It's like a minefield!” His signature sauce, he says, is in the way he picks the strings: He holds his picks loose, but plucks in such a way that his thumb often hits the string at the same time, producing a sound just shy of a pinched squeal, but more spunky than a regular strike. Frehley drops tons of golden bits of KISS history: the engineering behind his famous “smoke bomb” effect, the time he woke up in Paris with his eyes swollen shut from makeup, how he accidentally roadied for Hendrix, the shared genealogy between his technique and Eddie Van Halen's, and which KISS member smelled the worst after shows. Netflix is a Joke will be back in LA this May and they called on everyone you've ever heard of, plus the Jonathan Majors case took a weird turn in court yesterday, and Ace is still being classic Ace.
Gene Simmones and Paul Stanley along with Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer have played what is supposed to be the final show as KISS at Madison Square Garden in New York City. But as dedicated fans surely know — they were never going to call it quits. Not really. During their encore, the band's current lineup — founders Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons as well as guitarist Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer — left the stage to reveal digital avatars of themselves. After the transformation, the virtual Kiss launched into a performance of “God Gave Rock and Roll to You.” FRUMESS is POWERED by www.riotstickers.com/frumess GET 1000 STICKERS FOR $79 RIGHT HERE - NO PROMO CODE NEED! Ex-Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley isn't going to play with Kiss again for their last show, but he does have new music! Mark Cuban just made himself a lot of money and there's a new version of Nasfertu coming next year.
KISS was so important to your hosts, The Wolf & Action Jackson, as part of the foundation of their love of rock n roll, live music and their friendship. That's why they invited Tom & Zeus from Shout It Out Loudcast to come on the premier episode of First Concert Memories, our monthly sidecast, and talk about the first time they saw KISS. For FCM 4, we welcome back Sonny "Hollywood" Pooni of Grown Up Rock Podcast and The Album Review Crew to talk about the first time he ever saw legendary KISS lead guitarist Ace Frehley play live. The Wolf and Action saw Ace as a solo act in the 1990s but Sonny saw him as a co-headliner with Y&T in 1987 and he shares with us how important it was to him to see Ace. Sonny go into KISS during the Asylum era and then learned that KISS used to have makeup and had different members of the band. From there he picked up Ace's first solo effort (aside from the 1978 KISS solo albums) Frehley's Comet and it furthered endeared him to Ace's style. Ace famously has had bouts with drugs and alcohol and Sonny relates a story of seeing Ace fall off the stage as well as why the band was so much better with Tod Howarth than in later years without him. If you've seen Ace recently, odds are you were disappointed as he seems a shell of his former self. That's why we wanted to share some memories from when Ace was still in strong form and delivering solid live shows. Sonny is opinionated and you'll hear all his takes on Ace, the shows he has seen and he even provided a bootleg recording of the show which is an FCM first! Bakko goes to an Uncle Kracker show. Ellefson saves Megadeth. LC & Bakko accuse each other of grooming. LC gives an update on getting a cat. Ace Frehley has some thoughts on groupies while his manager gets arrested. Motley Crue recording session = job security for Bob Rock. And somehow Charles Manson comes up. Three are featured on Frehley's new collection of tunes Origins Vol 1. His goal was to give fans the opportunity to hear what might have happened if he had been part of the original release.
