Former Pac-12 Commissioner - Larry Scott - on the success of the conference's media deal, and what he would have done differently regarding the launch of the Pac-12 Network. The Tier 1 media deal he negotiated increased annual revenue 3x from the prior deal, and also introduced a new structure that shared revenue equally between schools. The Pac-12 Network project was not originally launched with profit in mind, but rather focused on exposure. The recruiting advantage of that exposure directly impacted the Pac-12's success across multiple sports, especially women's basketball. It feels counterintuitive, but there’s usually more going on during the off-season than during the season. And when it comes to Washington Football, that certainly seems to be true right now. Now only are the Huskies in the middle of a search to replace their defensive coordinator, Pete Kwiatkowski, who left to do the same job at Texas, but it’s all being done at the same time the news came down that Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott would be leaving his post at the end of June. In this exclusive conversation with Washington Athletic Director Jen Cohen, Dawgman.com’s Kim Grinolds asks Cohen for her take on the timing of the news, whether she would ever be interested in becoming Pac-12 Commissioner, and whether or not she could see former UW Head Coach Chris Petersen in the same post. Talk then turned to Kwiatkowski and what the Huskies can do financially to attract a top assistant to replace arguably one of the best defensive coordinators in the country. The 2020 season was a short one for the Huskies. They finished 3-1 in Jimmy Lake’s first year as UW’s head coach. Cohen talked about her take on the season and then gave her two cents - and a lot more - on the transfer portal, players dealing with the coronavirus bubble on campus, homesickness, and how all of that can take a toll on student-athletes. In the next segment of the conversation, Grinolds moves the talk to basketball and whether or not Men’s Head Coach Mike Hopkins is on the hot seat. Cohen gives an emphatic answer to that question. She also goes into some detail into not only the new basketball operations building, which will be built where the old swimming pool is on the east end of Hec Edmundson Pavilion, but also the new Softball Performance Center, which will be next to the Dempsey Indoor Facility. For the final segment of the conversation, Grinolds goes back to football to ask about whether or not Cohen envisions fans being in the stands for the 2021 season, and talk then turns to when the Michigan game will be replayed, future scheduling thoughts, and also information on some “virtual” events for Signing Day and Spring Football that will engage fans, despite not being able to attend due to the coronavirus. Chuck and Bucky discuss further the decision by the Pac-12 to dump Commissioner Larry Scott, what it means for the conference and more. Also, should the Houston Texans actually trade their angered quarterback Deshaun Watson?
The media got a chance to hear from Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott ahead of the Pac-12 Championship Game, and they peppered him with questions on a variety of subjects. Scott said the conference as a whole has had a .15 percent false positive rate since the Quidel testing partnership was put into place, and the rate of 1.2 percent positive COVID-19 tests was a testament to having student-athletes closely monitored by the schools and their own best practices and protocols within the pandemic. He also talked about the players’ work toward social justice, saying the conference is 100 percent behind their efforts, and also touched on name, image, and likeness rights. Scott said they still fully believe in the amateur model, but understand where things are headed but they need to find solutions that avoid pay-for-play. When the talk turned to Scott answering questions, he was hit on a number of different fronts. He was asked about the reputation of the Pac-12 when it comes to college football, looking back at starting the season late, how he measures success of the season, his own contract with the conference, and dealing with massive fiscal deficits throughout all the Pac-12 athletic departments. Scott was asked specifically about Colorado’s situation and being asked to be on stand-by while Oregon and USC get ready for the Pac-12 Championship Game, and also why UW and USC weren’t considered co-champions since one of the teams couldn’t play in the championship game. The questions then turned to the league's future media rights negotiations. Scott seems to believe the conference is in a position to leapfrog others when it comes to what he calls ‘untapped growth in our value’. The negotiations start up in a couple of years. Despite the sudden shutdown and gradual reopening of sports around the world due to Covid, there has been a lot of news recently regarding sports betting and student athlete compensation in the U.S. Below are some of the highlights: 1. The NFL Players' Association is offering a new program to teach former NFL football players about the potential dangers of gambling addiction. A summary of the program is provided in the article linked below: https://www.legalsportsreport.com/42792/former-nfl-players-responsible-gambling-education/ 2. The Gambling Related Harm All Party Parliamentary Group published a 72-page report examining the online gambling industry in Great Britain and the possible harmful effects that online gambling can have on people, their families and their communities. One of the key recommendations is that there should be a ban on all gambling advertising, including shirts, league sponsors, pitchside ads and also in online games like FIFA. Below are links to the report and an excellent analysis of the report by the Northridge firm: Report: http://www.grh-appg.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Online-report-Final-June16-2020.pdf Northridge Article: https://northridgelaw.com/potential-ban-on-gambling-advertising-in-great-britain/ 3. The United States Senate Judiciary Committee conducted a hearing on Wednesday July 22, 2020 entitled "Protecting the Integrity of College Athletics." The hearing included testimony from Heather Lyke, athletic director at the University of Pittsburgh, who spoke on behalf of the University and Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), Bill Miller, president and chief executive of the American Gaming Association (AGA), and NCAA president Mark Emmert. Below is a link to a video of the hearing: https://www.judiciary.senate.gov/meetings/protecting-the-integrity-of-college-athletics 4. The Power 5 Conferences of the NCAA (SEC, ACC, Big 10, Big 12 and Pac 12) are working on national legislation regarding compensation for student athletes. The full proposal is not yet available, but the idea generally is to standardize NIL rules across all 50 states, preempt any existing state legislation on the same subject (e.g., Florida, California and Colorado), and provide a safe harbor to the NCAA from any anti-trust litigation by student athletes. 5. #WeAreUnited College athletes from the PAC 12 conference recently published a letter in The Player's Tribune threatening to opt out of practice and game participation in the Fall semester unless their demands regarding athlete treatment, safety and racial justice were addressed by the PAC 12 Conference. In response, PAC 12 Commissioner Larry Scott said that he is "happy to discuss" the issues identified by the players.
