Why Spotify's “Plays” Metric Has Podcasters Shook

Send us a textSpotify just dropped a new metric: Plays. It's supposed to show how many times your episode was played—similar to YouTube views—but as of now, it's only visible inside Spotify for Podcasters, not to the public. This episode is sponsored by  Riverside.fm - With Riverside you can record high quality audio and video podcasts remotely. But it's also part of podcasting growing up. I'm not sure how I feel yet, but I'm watching closely—and still focused on making content I love.

Podcast Marketing Strategy: Why Guesting Might Be Smarter Than Hosting Your Own Show

Send us a textBefore you spend time and money launching your own podcast, consider this: guesting on other people's shows might actually be a more effective podcast marketing strategy. In this solo episode of CLIPPED, I'm breaking down why guesting can deliver faster and more targeted results than hosting—especially if your main goals are audience growth, brand visibility, or selling a product or service.Launching a show from scratch is no small feat. Between content creation, editing, publishing, and promotion, hosting your own podcast can turn into a full-time job. That's where podcast marketing strategy through guest appearances comes in. It allows you to tap into existing audiences, establish credibility instantly, and focus your energy on spreading your message—without the burden of managing an entire production schedule.Guesting is one of the most underutilized tactics in any effective podcast marketing strategy, yet it can deliver faster results than hosting your own show. By appearing on podcasts that already have a loyal, niche audience, you gain access to warm leads and engaged listeners who trust the host. It's a shortcut to podcast discoverability, helping you reach your ideal audience faster than if you tried to build one from the ground up.In this episode, I'll walk you through:Why hosting a show is often more time-consuming and less impactful early onHow guesting gets you in front of high-intent audiences with no upfront costsWhen guesting should be your core strategy—and when it makes sense to start your own podcast later onTactical tips on finding the right shows to pitch and getting bookedHow this fits into a broader content creation and audience growth strategyWhether you're a content creator, business owner, or part of an enterprise podcast team looking for smarter ways to grow your reach, this episode is for you.

Captain America: Brave New World carries on the distressing trend of underachieving and subpar MCU movies. Worse, like much of Phase 4 and 5, there still seems to be no clear direction for what is coming next or why. Brave New World is not a terrible film, but it is one that is clearly stitched together. Plagued by behind-the-scenes drama and frequent reshoots, the whole is clearly made from disparate parts. Thus, despite game efforts from Anthony Mackie as the titular Captain and Harrison Ford, replacing William Hurt, as Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, it can never overcome its issues. If you're not seeing results, it might be because you haven't put in the reps—yet. This episode dives into what the 10,000-hour rule really means, how mastery requires time and effort, and why so many people try to skip the hard work. Eric also shares his own 10,000-hour journey—from running errands at recording studios to building a podcast production company. Popularized by Malcolm Gladwell, this concept suggests that true mastery takes at least 10,000 hours of deliberate practice. Becoming great at something requires repetition, failure, and continuous learning. Professionals don't cut corners—they put in the work and develop real expertise. Why Are Agency Owners and Coaches Struggling? Lack of Real Skills: Many jump into business without actually mastering a craft. Selling Theory, Not Experience: Too many coaches sell courses or strategies they've never implemented themselves. Shortcut Mentality: AI tools and quick hacks can't replace the years of experience needed to develop true expertise. Eric's 10,000-Hour Journey in Audio Started interning at 17 Hertz Studios in North Hollywood—running errands, setting up mics, and learning the ropes. Worked at Paramount Recording Studios, recording, editing, and getting yelled at (a lot). Transitioned to podcasting in 2015, building The Podcast Haven from the ground up. Cold-emailed hundreds of podcasters, landed clients like Kimberly Snyder and Paychecks & Balances, and grew a sustainable business through years of hard work. How to Actually Get Good at Something Do the work before you sell the solution—learn by doing, not by theory. Master the tools of your industry—whether it's Pro Tools, Google Ads, or video editing software. Go through the struggle—get used to high-pressure situations, criticism, and iteration. Test, fail, refine, repeat—real mastery comes from constant improvement over time. Listen To Past Podcast Episodes: How To Record a Video Podcast On Your iPhone: Easily Podcast In 4K! Spotify for Creators: The Rebrand, Vertical Video Clips, Video Monetization, Big Promises, and My Honest Take

Clipped

Spotify has rebranded its Spotify for Podcasters platform into the newly minted Spotify for Creators. This update, launched in November 2024, aims to provide video podcasters with more tools to grow and monetize their shows.  In this episode, Eric dives into what this rebrand means, the new features Spotify has rolled out, and whether or not anyone will actually use them.  Spotify for Creators is Spotify's attempt to shake things up in the podcast world, especially for video creators. They've added a couple of new features designed to make it easier to promote and monetize podcasts.  Sponsor Alert: This podcast is proudly sponsored by Riverside, our go-to platform for recording podcasts online. We're big fans of their AI-powered tools, including features for generating show notes, creating transcripts, and our favorite—"Magic Clips." Magic Clips uses AI to effortlessly transform your video content into shareable, short-form vertical clips. It's a game-changer for repurposing your content. Ready to give it a try? Use promo code CLIPPED at checkout to save 20%! First, there's the new video clip upload tool, which allows creators to share vertical short-form clips on Spotify itself. Second, they've introduced a monetization option for video podcasts, though the requirements and revenue split might make you pause.  While we applaud Spotify for trying to innovate, the practicality of these features raises questions—like who is really searching Spotify for video clips when platforms like Instagram and YouTube are already dominating the space? Spotify For Creators Key Features: Vertical Video Clips Upload short-form, vertical videos to promote your podcast directly on Spotify. Ideal for teasers, promos, and highlights, but let's be honest—do people really consume short-form content on Spotify? Full-Length Video Uploads: Not a new feature, but a reminder: you can upload your entire video podcast to Spotify so users can choose between audio or video. Monetization Info: Host your podcast on Spotify (no external hosting allowed). Publish at least 12 episodes. Achieve 10,000 listening hours and 2,000 unique listeners on Spotify in the past 30 days. 50/50 split between Spotify and the creator. Ads are programmatic, not host-read, and may lack customization. Spotify is making moves to push podcasting forward, especially for video creators, but with strong competition from platforms like YouTube and TikTok, it's uncertain whether these features will gain traction or truly impact the podcasting landscape.
