10am-11am Several Community organisations join us City Tribune Headlines We hear about the Community Games
Ryan K. Rosen, Founder and Creative Director of Friendly Futures, shares how bespoke community games can transform public spaces and bring people together in healthy, joyful ways. We talk about what inspired him to start Friendly Futures, why public spaces often bring people near each other but not truly together, and how his custom-designed games encourage natural interaction across all ages and abilities. He shares how physical play can compete with digital entertainment, stories of projects that have been transformed through games, and the challenges of introducing playful design into public spaces. We end with his vision for the future of play in cities, and how municipalities can embrace it to create friendlier, more connected communities.Tune in!Useful links. ryan@friendly-futures.comWebsiteSubstackLinkedIn__Keep Up the Good Work. "I won! I won! I won! I won the race! I was first! I deserved that medal. It was mine. I don’t care that I wasn’t a 14 year old girl. But no one seemed happy for my athletic prowess. Fuck ‘em. I couldn’t stop to argue, I kept on running, running towards the storage prefabs in the park where I collapsed in a heap of bones and sickness, as Niklas Von Falconhorst lowered his binoculars…" "You’re a sad man Tom… Everyone knows that. Rachel was only using you. She wanted me! And she wasn’t going to give up either! But at that moment I had no concept of what the hell was going on as my legs went from beneath me in the dense growth around the prefabs." "Meanwhile as Lionel dragged me towards a vacant prefab cabin, Ponkin Bourke and Egritte Manbender were close by, all alone together they were, inside a prefab room looking through the Community Games medals and starting to look at each other, all weird like!" "See, told yis! Tom Kendall is a pervert of wild proportions! But what about poor old Ponkin, no butthole surfing for him with all the interruptions from a concerned Broadleaf O’Hara looking for me and a psychopathic Seawee Magee looking for Cottle! Like the main train station it was. But all I could hear was the echo of Lionel Penton’s sleazy man-molestering voice…" "At that moment as Lionel Penton began to unbuckle his beige chinos in front of my exhausted head, trying to convince me to work for him as his call centre manager… Outside the prefabs, with a pair of fat earphones and a microphone, was Mount Eidel Radio’s Cottle Fardell on the move and not far behind him, clacking along in her black heels was Rachel Stakkum, pumpin’ sweat from all angles…" "I had no idea what the fuck was going on! I was burning up… hot… couldn’t see… visions of erections… But then suddenly! Rachel Stakkum took the initiative, it was him or her!" "Seawee Magee swung that bat and caught Cottle square on the side of his neck… From then on it was all a blur… The room filled with people… I could hear only muffled voices. Was that Ponkin? Or Hubert Stelfark??? It didn’t matter… I went a bit mental…" "And that was it… I don’t remember much… But I’d like to take this opportunity to apologise to Rachel. I was told I broke her jaw with my penis. Sorry Rachel. After that? Well, as Lionel said… I still had the job offer; call-centre manager, 40,000-a-year + commission + travel-saver package including gym membership and food tickets?… He’d take me on, if, as he euphemistically stated “I’d take him on me”… Well, what would you do?" "Yeah, yeah, like you wouldn’t do the same. I had to pay a lot of damages… The public toilet alone cost a fortune… What can I say? My name is Richard Pheasant. Most people who know me call me Dick… I am not a proud man." Mount Pheasant I is an Amplevoicepod ear-film production. We make fully immersive HD audio adventures. "Ah Jesus! I couldn’t help it! She was dripping on me carpet, bouncin’ around, trying to grab a picture off the wall and the towel just fell off her!! And there she was… like something off Pornhub; Pert and pretty, I had to touch her! But I was breakin’ the rules! No! I ran and ran, into the street, down the road, towards the town square.""I was right! No one would know. Know what? That I was about to shit myself! Those first set of animal pheromone pills were about to exit fast. I needed relief! Thank god that newly installed mechanical toilet box in the square was ready to take my money!! Open up ya whore ya! Rachel is comin’! She’s comin’!""Sorry Rachel, you were within a nipple’s length of getting sorely abused in the malfunctioning steel Exeloo toilet box in the square. I just ran! She chased me down towards the Mount Eidel memorial park where the Community Games were about to start! I saw a car, a big car, I had to hide from her! She was manic!""Lionel was trying to rape me! What the fuck was going on? How was I supposed to know the book I’d stolen from the library was an iconic gay novel? How’d I know he’d think me running away from young Rachel was a sign he could try and mount me? But as soon as those electric seats started to go down, that’s what he was intent on doing! I had to get out! Help! Help!""I ran as fast as me shaken stumps would take me. Snot flew all over my face as I fled into the crowds gathered for the opening ceremony of the Mount Eidel community games. It was a beautiful Summer’s day. Everyone was there; Ponkin was up close beside the posh Egritte Manbender woman. Broadleaf O’Hara was with Niklas Von Falconhorst toasting their sponsorship of the event and gardener Tom Kendall was hurriedly making finishing touches to the floral display. Then Hubert Stelfark took the microphone and mounted the podium.""I didn’t need this! Shlioler would kill me! What if she saw Rachel? But never mind that! Lionel Penton was running into the park after me. They were all after me! This was sick! I was sick! I lunged with all my energy towards the trees as the first children’s running event was about to start. No-one would find me in the thick of the bushes. Cottle too, he was on the run as well, seems his interview with Seawee Magee on fishing quota was twisted by Tom Shergar on the radio that day and Seawee was seeking out Cottle with a baseball bat but ever the professional Cottle would still cover the games.""Good old Tom Kendall, he’d hang you out to dry the two-faced fucker. You can see he likes to watch; with his baggy eyes focused on Rachel. Her there scuttling along in her high black heels and disgustingly perfect buttocks. She was intent on hunting me down. I was like an escaped convict as I lept into the oncoming bushes.""I told youse. A bet was a bet! And I pulled meself free from Shlioler’s toothless mouth. Tom Kendall was my witness! She barely sucked on it for a second! You tell them Tom! You know what I did next! I had no choice! Lionel was huntin’, Rachel was chasin’, Shlioler was achin’! And I was wasting! So I summoned the last drop of momentum I could, I burst through the bushes and launched down the grass bank and onto the running track, just as the starter pistol for the Girls-under-14 Relay race shot into the sky..."Mount Pheasant I is an Amplevoicepod ear-film production. If you've fought it out against your friends over games like Street Fighter II or Tekken you'll know the feeling of lighting fast reflexes, or in my case randomly mashing buttons. Some of the world's best fighting game players descended on Sydney to take part in the OzHadou Nationals 14, an annual event where every microsecond counts. Henry "Genxa" Sham, Tournament Organiser and Brand Manager of OzHadou joined us this week to talk about community, competition and congratulations. Head to OzHadou for more information on their monthly events. If you were like me you were probably told off in class for playing games on your calculator, especially if you weren't in maths. Today we're exploring the use of games in education and how serious games can be used to teach concepts in engaging ways. The mechanics of gaming are even being applied to the classroom, with the gamification of lessons. How can games help people learn, and what can we learn from games to teach better? Finally Riot Games, maker of the exceeding popular League of Legends has had a public stoush with some of the bigger eSports teams that make up their competitive scene. Following an interview by eSports team owner Andy Dinh, AKA TSMReginald, criticising the way Riot handles updates and patches to LoL, co-founder of Riot Marc Merril questioned the professionalism and pay that players are receiving from teams like Regi's Team SoloMid. With teams falling on either side of the equation and restrictions on the ways that teams can make money, we explore the value of work for eSports players and teams, and whether or not they are being paid adequately for their time. Thanks to Brian for the giving us the news this week. The guys kick off the show with a handful of different XBLA demo impressions including Zombie Wranglers, Arkanoid Live!, Space Invaders Extreme, and Star Trek D.A.C. Jeremy (Superfro33) checked out the music themed Community Game Jammer, and drops a nod to a great Community Games online resource - http://xblcg.info/. Craig (prof dresser) tears up everything in his path with the Red Faction: Guerrilla demo and played some Skate 2 multiplayer with Jeremy. Sean (seanyxxx) settled in for the long and winding road to the completion of the GTA DLC. Craig and Jeremy also wax poetic about the available Fallout DLC, and sidetrack into a discussion on the pitfalls of getting back into games when DLC becomes available. And to round it all out, Jeremy explains how Velvet Assassin managed to sneak up and stab him in the part of the brain that likes playing video games. Show music courtesy of Raptorface! Jeremy (Superfro33) and Craig (prof dresser) both discuss a bunch of game demos that recently showed up on the Marketplace, Jeremy partied like it was 1992 with the newest JRPG outing Star Ocean 4, and Craig gives a few older title updates. The guys also trick Julian Kantor, creator of the Community Game "Groov", to phone in and give them insight as to why his game is so kickass! Which, conveniently enough, leads into their own discussion on Community Games. E-mail us at signedinpodcast@gmail.com! Follow us on Twitter and join our group on Facebook!
Our guest this week is developer Nathan Fouts of Mommy's Best Games. He's the creator of the Xbox Community Game Weapon of Choice, which we covered several episodes ago -- and yes, he calls us out on many of our criticisms. He also talks candidly about the freedom and frustration of Community Games development, what inspired Weapon of Choice, and somehow it culminates in a Devil May Cry 3 rant that must not be missed. Our thanks to Nathan for participating! Be sure to visit his website at http://www.mommysbestgames.com.
