Karyn and Charlotte Elia discuss congregational vitality through entrepreneurial ministry, the importance of public witness, and the urgency of preaching in this moment. "A church has to be permission givers, and church leadership have to be permission givers. So when somebody comes in and says, I have this great idea, it's like, go for it. It doesn't have to go to six committees. It doesn't have to be approved in the budget a year from now. It's go for it. We'll find the money and the resources. Let's do it. Let's try it. That's what I wanna see in the church. And I think those are the churches that are being successful right now. They've just been giving permission to these new ways to be church." - Rev. 2020 is now in the rear view mirror, yet the call to lean into what it means to be the Church of Jesus Christ remains vital, especially as we continue to navigate the challenges of congregational life, revitalized witness, and discerning imaginative possibilities to live into the gospel within and beyond the walls of our buildings. That said, we decided to begin the New Year with reflections from leaders of our presbytery who have been pivotal in our Presbytery's launch of the Vital Congregations Initiative of the PCUSA as we talk Gospel Possibilities and Congregational Vitality. Note: what follows is not an ad for participation in this two-year venture in which eleven of our congregations are intentionally pilgrimaging through together. Instead, we wanted to take time to share what we have found beneficial at the beginnings of our journey that could be life-giving for all our churches and related ministries as they discern where and how the Spirit is calling them to discern, dream, and vision what it means to bear witness to the gospel in their unique location and ministry season. Called by a variety of names: discipleship groups, cell groups, life groups, etc. what exactly constitutes a small group? Scott and Steve explore this question with the help of Jacqui King (Director of Congregational Vitality) from Discipleship Ministries. The Small Groups in the Wesleyan Way podcast is where we are all about going beyond curriculum, beyond programs, beyond best practices to recover and learn from our Wesleyan roots and to explore the foundations for small groups that produce disciples of Jesus Christ who in turn disciple others. Scott Hughes is the Director of Adult Discipleship for Discipleship Ministries. Steve Manskar is Director of Wesleyan Leadership and Covenant Discipleship for Discipleship Ministries.
