How are we changed if we pray, "Our Mother, who art in Heaven," or, "We believe in one God, the Mother Almighty?" If humans are created in God's image, perhaps our understanding of and imagination for God has been too narrow. Every day in Advent, tune in to spend a few minutes with God's femininity – as we prepare for her humanity.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Helen Robinson, the Auckland City Missioner, recently shared insights into her career and the Mission's unwavering commitment to helping those in need with Purposely. Rising from the ranks, Helen was promoted to the role of CEO in April 2021, succeeding Chris Farrelly as the Missioner. Growing up in Johnsonville, Wellington, amongst a family of five, Helen describes her upbringing as one filled with love and warmth. Inspired by her parents' leadership within their community, she embarked on a path dedicated to serving others. With a background in youth development and a law degree under her belt, Helen's journey led her to work internationally in Ethiopia and to obtain a master's degree in social and community leadership, focusing on researching food insecurity. Currently overseeing 240 staff members across various services including housing, food, health, and social services, Helen acknowledges the immense responsibility she holds. She emphasises the importance of meditation in managing the demands of her role, finding solace in the serene surroundings of her New Lynn home. Helen's professional journey has been marked by her dedication to addressing social issues in New Zealand. With significant experience in community development, she has worked with marginalised populations and led initiatives to combat homelessness and food insecurity. Her tenure as the General Manager of Social Services at Auckland City Mission saw notable improvements in service delivery, aimed at providing dignified support to those in need. In addition to her practical work, Helen has contributed to research on food insecurity in New Zealand and played a pivotal role in initiatives like Kore Hiakai, striving towards a food-secure Aotearoa. Her academic background in law and social policy, coupled with her deep understanding of social issues, underscores her commitment to justice and equity. Founded in response to the aftermath of World War I and the Spanish flu epidemic, Auckland City Mission has a long-standing history of community service devoid of prejudice. From helping individuals battling addiction to offering assistance during the AIDS crisis, the Mission remains steadfast in its ethos of inclusivity. The recent completion of HomeGround—a $100 million facility—marks a significant milestone in the Mission's journey. Serving as a central community hub, HomeGround provides permanent housing, healthcare services, addiction support, and a welcoming environment for all individuals and families in need. The profound impact of the Mission's work is evident in the countless individuals and families it assists annually, offering vital services ranging from food assistance to residential care. Guided by Helen's leadership, the Mission remains dedicated to its pursuit of justice and hope amidst the challenges posed by poverty. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mark-longbottom2/message
There are fears nothing has been done to prevent another Loafers Lodge tragedy. An investigation into boarding house facilities was initiated after last year's fire killed five people. It's found only half the 37 buildings inspected had adequate smoke detectors. Wellington City Missioner Murray Edridge told Mike Hosking that more needs to be done. He says they're just waiting for this to happen again but isn't hopeful anything will change. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost. What do Israelites and vineyard workers have in common? In this week's readings, they can't seem to stop complaining. Like the people in these Biblical stories, we usually HEAR nothing but the words being spoken to us. How might our view of others shift if we learned to LISTEN for the lived experiences that lay beneath those words?

Support agencies are concerned about the re-housing of those living in the Wellington hostel which caught fire on Monday night. The top floor of Loafers Lodge was engulfed in flames for hours as firefighters fought the blaze, and six people died. But about 50 people who survived the fire will need new accomodation, which is difficult to come across in the midst of the capital city's housing crisis. Wellington City Missioner Murray Edridge spoke with Ingrid Hipkiss.
The number of people looking for emergency housing declined at the end of 2022 for the first time since 2015. In 2023, demand is rising once more. The number of households with more than two years in emergency housing has doubled since this time last year. Wellington City Mission's Murray Edridge says that despite there being rentals available, they are not necessarily affordable or appropriate. He said it's a combination of mismatch of stock and insufficient stock overall, which will change when the new developments have been completed.

Wellington's City Missioner is echoing National's claims of a living cost crisis. Christopher Luxon has painted a picture of New Zealanders being squeezed by rising taxes and high inflation. If he becomes Prime Minister he'd repeal all of Labour's taxes or added levies introduced since 2017. Jacinda Ardern says she wouldn't describe the situation as a crisis, but says people are certainly feeling an impact. But Wellington Missioner Murray Edridge told Mike Hosking things are incredibly tough out there. “Most of us, we don't even understand what that looks like. We're worried about the price of petrol and other thing, these people aren't worried about that, they're just worried about surviving.” LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
