Many yoga teachers in our community either already specialize in teaching seniors, or would like to. Yoga can be a wonderful practice for older people and it is important that yoga teachers consider what is most helpful when working with this population.  We are so lucky today to have Yoga for Seniors expert, Chintamani Kansas, walking us through this conversation. Chintamani has been teaching Yoga for over 20 years and has studied Meditation, Embodied Anatomy, Ayurveda, Yoga Therapy, Thai Massage.  In 2020, Chintamani launched a series of daily therapeutic yoga classes via Zoom for a community of committed Yoga Lovers, many of whom are active older adults. Yoga for Strong Bones and Core Yoga for Strong Bones classes are designed to stimulate bone density in key areas of vulnerability and eliminate movements that are potentially injurious to people with Osteopenia, Osteoporosis, Arthritis, and back pain. People of all ages attend the classes for joint mobilization, stretching, energizing yoga, strength, balance, and relaxation. Sara VanderGoot, CMT, e-RYT 200, e-RYT 500, RPYT co-founded Mind the Mat Pilates and Yoga. She studied Interdisciplinary Yoga with Don and Amba Stapleton in Nosara, Costa Rica and at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Sara completed her Prenatal Yoga Training at Blooma in Minneapolis. Sara is registered through internationally recognized Yoga Alliance as a e-RYT 200, e-RYT 500 and RPYT. Sara is Nationally Certified in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork, and licensed by the Virginia Board of Nursing. She specializes in working with moms during and after pregnancy and attends births as a doula. She completed her doula training with experienced midwives in Colombia, South America and is knowledgeable about modern birth practices as well as ancestral birth practices and plant medicines. Sara has been practicing massage therapy, including specialties in Prenatal Massage, Post-pregnancy Massage, Deep Tissue Massage and Thai Yoga Massage, in Alexandria for 20 years and has been a yoga instructor for 10 years. At Mind the Mat she specializes in Prenatal Yoga, Post-pregnancy Core Yoga, Mommy & Me Core Yoga, Flow Yoga, Hot Flow Yoga and Deep Stretch. One of Sara's favorite things is teaching in the 200 & 300 Hour Mind the Mat Yoga Teacher Training programs, which she began developing in 2013. Before becoming a massage therapist and yoga instructor, Sara earned her Juris Doctorate from William and Mary Law School and was a lawyer in the Washington D.C. area. She found that the healing practices of massage and yoga brought a balance to her life that she had long been searching for. A Jivamukti Yoga class with emphasis on working your core gently. Once a stable core is "programmed into mind-body" system", the yogi will experience a profound steadiness in their lives - physical steadiness, as well as energetic and mental steadiness, i.e. balance and clarity. The core can mean many things to different people. Some believe a "6-pack" is equivalent to a strong core, but this is simply not true, as a 6 -pack alone will not stabilise the lumbar/abdominal region of your physical body (strong belly muscles alone will do the opposite). A strong and stable core consists of all those muscles that support and stabilise the abdominal region of your body, i.e. front, back and sides need to be worked in a conscious way to activate and create that stability. Further to physical stability, yogis work on creating openness, and energetic and mental stability, through Bandha (locks) and an expanded awareness to these. From my own experience, this steadiness is profound, and hence this class was created to help others find steadiness in their lives. Actress Kathleen Kinmont is best known as series regular Cheyenne Phillips from the Stephen J. Cannell series, “Renegade.” She has also performed in over 30 films including Tom Hanks' “That Thing You Do!” and John Carpenter's “Halloween 4” and H.P. Lovecrafts' “Bride of Re-Animator.” Kathleen, also a certified yoga instructor, was born in Toluca Lake, California, to actress Abby Dalton and businessman Jack D. Smith. They are both featured in “Restorative Core Yoga ~ 33 Ways To Embrace The Ground,” a DVD that Kathleen wrote and produced with producing partner, Lisa Marie Wilson, through their production company, BFFent. An accomplished equestrian, Kathleen grew up riding in Griffith Park. She is an all around natural athlete, who has owned Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreds and Arabians. She has ridden in Wyoming with wild mustangs, an unguided week long trek in Ireland, and countless rides in the Hawaiian islands and High Sierra back country. Kathleen was honored with the title of Miss USO in Camp Pendleton and has hosted over a dozen shows for the USO. After going toe-to-toe with Howard Stern, Kathleen was given her own radio show on 95.5 KLOS called “The Bad Girls Club.” “There's really very little that can buck me off, not even Howard Stern.” ~ Kathleen Kinmont
