How our Brains respond to Biophilic Design

In a world increasingly disconnected from nature, the principles of biophilic design offer a powerful antidote.Chintamani Bird, an Australian designer committed to biophilic design, shared her insights on how Biophilic Design can heal both people and the planet. She emphasizes that biophilic design has a profound impact on the brain, reducing stress, improving cognitive function, activating the parasympathetic nervous system, and enhancing overall mood and well-being.As the Journal of Biophilic Design expands to Australia in 2025, this is the first in a series of interviews with leading names in Biophilic Designers from that side of the globe and who champion the transformative potential of this design philosophy. At the heart of Biophilic Design is the recognition that humans have an innate need to connect with the natural world. "Biophilic design has the opportunity to heal and heal through biodiversity, heal the soil, heal the environment, heal communities," Chintamani emphasized. When we put people in an environment like a modern open plan office with sensory deprivation, with white walls and square functional modular furniture for instance, we're actually really giving our people a beating. “It's very unkind and quite malicious," Chintamani explains. In contrast, environments infused with natural elements like fractals, water, and greenery can have a profound impact. Because the brain uses up an enormous amount of energy when engaged in any task, having those medium density fractals, allows for cognitive function to reduce as far as the effort it makes, and so helps us use the leftover energy to be more creative, to function, be more productive. This extends beyond the individual to the collective. Chintamani envisions a world "where nature is honoured and treated as sacred, with an integral balance between nature, Earth, and humanity."Biophilic design, she believes, can heal communities and ecosystems alike. The urgency of this approach is clear. "We're at a tipping point, we need to save our planet." With insects facing mass extinction, the time to act is now. Yet Chintamani's vision is not one of sacrifice, but of abundance. "Biophilic design has the opportunity to really do a lot of healing, not just for the environment, but also for people."From healthcare settings to workplaces, the integration of natural elements can reduce stress, improve mental health, and foster a sense of connection. I am often saying that biophilic design sits above everything... it's a catch all design principle that embraces everything and this discussion with Chintamani highlights this in buckets!By honouring our innate biophilia, our love of life, designers like Chintamani are reshaping the built environment to nurture both human and ecological wellbeing. In Chintamani's words, "we should actually imbue it with reverence and then be able to find an integral balance between nature, Earth and humanity."This is the transformative power of biophilic design. The fifth Ganesha in Ashtavinayak is Chintamani Ganapati. Here Ganesha is popularly known as 'Chintamani', which means "this Ganesha takes away all worries and gives peace to the mind". According to beliefs, King Abhijit and Queen Gunavati had a son named Ganasur. He harassed the poors and disturbed the penance of the sadhus. Ganasur once went on a hunt with his friends. Kapil Rishi had an ashram in that forest. The sage welcomed Gana and invited him and his friends for a meal. Dev Indra had given Chintamani to Rishi Kapil, from which whatever wish he asked was fulfilled. Using the same gem, Kapil Rishi created all kinds of food items for Ganasur. Seeing such a wonderful gem, Ganasur's longing to get it awakened in his mind. So Ganasur grabbed the gem by force from the hand of the sage. After that Kapil Rishi worshiped Bhagwan Ganapati. Ganapati was pleased with the devotion of the sage and after killing Ganasur, he took back Chintamani from him. When Bhagwan Ganesha wanted to return Chintamani to Kapil Rishi, in gratitude to him, Kapil Muni presented Chintamani to Ganeshji forever. Even today, the Mani is worn by Ganeshji in a necklace around his neck. According to the legends, Bhagwan Ganesha killed Ganasur under a Kadamba tree, hence the place is also called Kadamba Teerth   Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Bhagwan Ganapati or Ganesha is one of the most worshipped deities in India. As per the legend, King Abhijeet and his wife Gunavati had a son named Ganasura. He was a strong but greedy prince. Once, Ganasura visited the Ashram of Sage Kapila. The Sage showed great hospitality with the help of the Chintamani stone that he possessed. Ganasura came to know about the stone and wanted to acquire it. However, Sage Kapila refused his offer. Enraged, Ganasura forcibly took away the stone. Sage Kapila took advice from Goddess Durga and requested Lord Ganesha's help. The Lord fought a battle with Ganasura under a Kadamba tree and defeated him. He took back the Chintamani to the Sage, who gifted the stone back to Lord Ganesha as an honor. The precious stone was hung around the neck of Ganesha and hence, he came to be known as Lord Chintamani. The word Ashtvinayaka is a Sanskrit word that means Eight Ganeshas. These eight temples are located in different places, and all of them are considered ‘Swayambhu' or self-originated. These deities are “jagrut,” which means they fulfill the wishes of their devotees. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to Episode #43 of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast! This week, I welcome Paulo Martins onto the show, a yoga teacher and yoga studio owner from Portugal. In Lisbon, Paulo is the founder of Yoga Lumiar which is part of the Chintamani Yoga Association. He teaches and practices Babaji's Kryia Yoga which includes initiatic techniques and the following Yoga technical disciplines: Asana, Pranayama, Mantra, Yantra, Mudra, Bhanda, Kryia, Yoganidra, Puja, Manasika, Dhyana and Samadhi. My conversation with Paulo Martins, a yoga teacher from Portugal, was very grounding as we discussed the spiritual understanding of the origins of yoga. I hope that this conversation made you curious about going deeper on the path of yoga, and exploring it's origins. If you're looking to tune into a podcast episode that is all about the transformational power of yoga, then this is the conversation for you. Welcome to yoga in Lisboa! --> JOIN LILY FOR YOGA CLASSES ONLINE! What to expect in the Yoga In Portugal episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast Paulo and I kicked off the conversation by talking about how yoga first came into Paulo's life. After a heartbreak, his friends recommended yoga. Although he was in the military, he decided to become a yoga teacher and open his own yoga studio— affiliated with the Chintamani Yoga Association. Chintamani means transformation. Paulo described it as a kind of alchemy. As if they are transforming themselves from the heavy, dullness of our gross bodies into spiritual beings of light. Paulo took us back through the lines of yoga, and explained to us about the origins of yoga and how he seeks to honor them. Of course, he was very explicit that his ultimate goal is Samadhi or liberation. I found a lot of what Paulo said to be very curious— how he doesn't like to teach just a single yoga class as he doesn't find it to be beneficial for the students. And how he walked us through some of the different layers of the practice and path of yoga. Of course, we wrapped up the episode talking about yoga in Portugal and what Portugal is like to visit. Curious? Tune in! And welcome to yoga in Portugal! For the skimmers - What's in the yoga in Portugal episode? Transition from a life in the military to a life of yoga What is Chintamani Yoga? About the Book: In 2019, the BJP came into power once again on the back of one of the most significant electoral mandates in recent years. Since then, the Narendra Modi-led government has seen a tumultuous few years as they have implemented far-reaching legislative changes including the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, triple talaq, the Citizenship (Amendment) Act as well as farming laws. These laws, when implemented, caused widespread protests and upheaval across the country. While the country grappled with internal strife, it also faced challenges from its neighbors in the form of one of the most intense military stand-offs in decades after an unprovoked attack by China's People's Liberation Army at Galwan as well as a global pandemic. While the Modi government took swift steps to limit the spread of the pandemic in 2020, the second wave of COVID-19 in early 2021 hit the country hard, claiming thousands of lives. Bringing a well-researched and nuanced understanding to Modi's second term, The Midway Battle sheds light on the sociopolitical issues facing India as it continues its struggle against enemies both known and unknown, and puts into in perspective what lies ahead for the world's biggest democracy. A film that's Salim Khan's personal favorite among the films he co-wrote with Javed Akhtar.  A film that pits together two giants of Hindi cinema, Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan.  Gautam and I tried to unpack why Shakti is one of Dilip Kumar's greatest films and how the legendary actor was able to elevate the performances of his co-actors. We also discussed the craft of Shakti, the women of Shakti and how they are projected as the mature counterparts of their partners, how the film can be seen as an amalgamation of Salim-Javed's films, the film's terrific score by R D Burman, and how Bachchan was neither overshadowed nor overshadowing in the film. Feedback/comments/questions: loveofcinemasf@gmail.comCredits:Produced and hosted by: Himanshu Joglekar (@loveofcinemasf8)Editor: Devika JoglekarMusic: Nakul AbhyankarCopyrights © Love of Cinema 2021Support the show (https://www.paypal.me/LoveOfCinema)

A Bodhisattva is the ultimate treasure-seeker, searching for the Chintamani, the wish-fulfilling jewel, which gives all beings that which they truly desire. But how does a Bodhisattva find this gem and what do they do once they have found it?  Sadayasihi  explores the nature of compassion and how generosity can be both a means of expressing, as well as cultivating, compassion. After all, a Bodhisattva would never keep the Chintamani for themselves… From the talk entitled What Do You Do With A Wish-Fulfilling Jewel? given at Dublin Buddhist Centre, 2020. *** Subscribe to our Free Buddhist Audio podcast - a full Dharma talk every week! The divine Chintamani Saraswati Mantra is the Beeja mantra or seed sound for Saraswati, the Goddess of wisdom, arts, and creativity. The beautiful Goddess seated on a white swan can bestow you with intellect, sharp mind, and success in arts, education, and creative fields. ‘Chintamani’ refers to a wish-fulfilling jewel. As per legend, this powerful Chintamani Saraswati mantra was given by Saint Chintamani Swami to a dull boy after being asked by the boy’s father to improve his son’s intellect. When the boy chanted this mantra, it is believed that he attained the highest intelligence that even great scholars were not able to understand him. Later Goddess Saraswati herself appeared and gave special instructions to him chant this powerful mantra. With her grace, the boy named Shriharsha later created many great works like ‘Khandannakhandakhdya’ etc. Listening or chanting to this powerful Chintamani Saraswati mantra can fulfill wishes to become an erudite, intelligent, and creative person.

Listen to Chapter Sixteen and Seventeen of the new rendering of the Sri Sai Satcharitra by Divine Lineage’s Spiritual Director, Monika Penukonda. The original transcript of this sacred text by Hemadpant has been translated into an English language more accessible to modern English speakers. The benefits of regular reading and contemplation of the Satcharitra are innumerable, not only bringing wisdom and enlightenment, but the curing of any kind of problem and obstacles. It also brings support in all the endeavors of your life. "The last chapter described how Mr. Cholkar’s vow of a small offering was completed and accepted. In that story, Sai Baba showed that he would happily accept any thing, no matter how small, when it was offered with love and devotion. But if the same thing was offered with pride and conceit, he would reject it. He, being full of satchitananda (existence, consciousness and bliss), did not care for outward formalities but if an offering was made in a humble spirit, it was eagerly welcomed and accepted with pleasure. In fact, there is no person more generous and compassionate than a sadguru like Sai Baba. He cannot even be compared to the Chintamani jewel (the philosopher’s stone which satisfies desires), the Kalpataru (the celestial tree which fulfills our desires) or the Kamadhenu (the celestial cow which gives what we desire), for they only give us what we desire. But the sadguru gives us the most precious thing, which is inconceivable and inscrutable—Reality. Now let us hear how Baba handled a rich man who came and implored Baba to give him Brahma Jnana (self-realization)..." Music Credits: 'Sai Natha Sharanam' by Christina Schmidt & Baba´s Bhajan Band
