I am delighted to have my dear friend Harmony Slater on the podcast with me today. Harmony is one of the most honest and down-to-earth people I know and one of the most advanced yoga practitioners in the world. She and I share a history of traveling to India over the last 20 years to deepen our yoga practices. Harmony is a powerhouse with a great sense of humor. She is a mom, a National Board-Certified Life and Business Coach, a Spinal Energetics practitioner, and a yoga teacher. In this episode, we dive into her daily routines, the evolution of yoga over 25 years, and what it feels like to navigate aging and transformative personal work. Stay tuned. You will not want to miss this deep and meaningful conversation with Harmony Slater.Yoga BackgroundHer studies in philosophy and Eastern religions shaped Harmony's early understanding of yoga. She first encountered yoga in 1995 and experimented casually by attending classes here and there. Back then, she viewed yoga as a spiritual practice, a set of physical and meditative tools to connect with the divine reality or self-awareness. After nearly 25 years of practice, however, she describes yoga as far more than tools or practices. It has evolved into a way of being for her, shaping how she interacts with herself, others, and the world around her. Navigating Life Transitions with YogaYoga acts as a bridge, connecting the calm of inner stillness with the challenges of everyday life. Regular practice builds resilience and cultivates discipline, which you can apply to everyday responsibilities like making breakfast, driving kids to school, or managing work. Over time, yoga becomes less about long, immersive sessions and more about adapting its principles to the rhythm of life, enabling practitioners to approach challenges with grace and presence.Facing Identity and Letting Go of AchievementYoga provides an opportunity to explore the identity beyond external accomplishments as the process involves confronting emotions, navigating uncertainties, and embracing shifts in self-perception. Harmony turned to spiritual coaching to support her yoga journey, incorporating somatic awareness and energy work to foster greater self-understanding.The Transformative Journey of ConsciousnessYoga brings awareness to previously ignored parts of the body and mind, releasing stored emotions and patterns. While early stages of practice feel transformational, long-term practice leads to subtler but equally profound insights. Yoga and the Trance StatePracticing Ashtanga Yoga often creates a trance state, where the yoga practitioner experiences deep focus and heightened sensations. Many yoga practitioners wish they could remain in that state but recognize the importance of integrating yoga lessons into everyday life.Building Resilience Through DisciplineA regular yoga practice builds resilience and consistency. The discipline of showing up on the mat daily teaches practitioners how to handle challenges in other areas of life, allowing them to approach life steadily, even when unable to dedicate much time to yoga practices.Running a Business as a Spiritual PathFor yoga teachers, running a business can be an opportunity for growth and self-discovery. Building a business forces practitioners to examine their internal blocks and align their work with a deeper purpose of serving others.Confronting Ego and FearHarmony highlights the importance of addressing the ego and nervous system responses when taking risks. Despite some philosophical perspectives that ego and fear are not real, the nervous system still reacts as if they are. By unpacking those emotions and patterns, individuals can integrate their fear and anxieties, reducing their power. That...

She began her study of yoga at the age of 18 while attending the University of Massachusetts. From her first class, she knew she had found something special and deeply familiar. While she began to practice yoga on a purely physical plane and because it felt good, it became apparent some years later that there was more to Yoga than she originally thought. In 1991, Nicki traveled to Mysore, India to study with Sri K Pattabhi Jois, the master of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. She fell in love with the practice and continued her studies with Pattabhi Jois until his death in 2009. What she experienced on that first trip was a radical realization that yoga is much more than a physical practice. The yoga affected her deeply on an emotional and spiritual level. After that she was hooked! As she delved deeper into the Ashtanga practice she became curious about her teacher's teacher and his lineage. She learned that Tirumalai Krishnamacharya had been Pattabhi Jois' teacher and also the teacher of BKS Iyengar. This led her to study Iyengar Yoga with Mr. Iyengar, his children and with many of his senior teachers as well including Gabriella Giubilaro and Patricia Walden, at his institute in Pune, India. Nicki has always believed that her practice continued to grow and evolve due to her study and practice of both of these systems of Yoga. Nicki continues to study to study yoga with senior teachers and believes that a great teacher must always remain a dedicated student. Nicki's teaching has grown out of her practice and her deep faith in yoga and she chooses to honor her students as individuals first and foremost. Nicki's style combines asana, pranayama, philosophy, and poetry and her classes are strong and accessible to everyone. Nicki uses humor in her teaching to set her students at ease and she is considered to be very relatable and down to earth. She is known as a Teacher's teacher and loves igniting the spark of yoga in her students. Nicki lives on the beautiful island of Maui, Hawaii, where she owns and directs the Maya Yoga Studio on the North Shore of Maui. She has been featured in numerous articles and has graced the cover of Yoga Journal magazine. She is featured in 2 Ashtanga Yoga videos available through Gaiam and in 9 videos entitled Maya Yoga Vinyasa on her youtube channel. She is currently finishing a book on Yoga for beginners. Yoga in the west can be violent towards bodies and minds The importance of ahimsa (non-violence) in yoga Tell me more about Max Pranić - Prawn-isch  Max Pranić has been practicing and teaching yoga for over 20 years in various international settings, with his home base in the beautiful Adriatic country of Montenegro. He conducts regular classes and private training sessions at Yogaboka studio in Kotor Bay, PMYC Sports Club in Porto Montenegro, Tivat, and Chenot Espace Spa at One & Only, Portonovi.  Max's teaching approach is rooted in slow and gentle Hatha yoga, incorporating elements of Kriya and Raja yoga. His classes are suitable for practitioners of all levels, including beginners. As students progress, Max gradually introduces various pranayamas, dharanas, kriyas, mudras, bandhas, and other tools of a more subtle yoga practice. He also teaches traditional Indian Tantra yoga. What to expect in the Yoga In Montenegro episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast Max Pranić, an experienced yoga teacher from Montenegro, shares his profound journey with yoga and its authentic practice. He begins by clarifying that yoga, for him, is a sadana, a practice that involves the connection of body, mind, and breath. Before fully diving into traditional Indian yoga, Max explored various other practices like karate, kung fu, and zen meditation. However, it was yoga led him on a path of teaching and practicing yoga for over 20 years. Max's insight into yoga came when he studied with authentic Indian teachers during his years spent in India. His experiences studying with accomplished Indian masters enriched his understanding of yoga's true essence. He particularly emphasizes the significance of having a guru or spiritual teacher, which is more than just a technical or physical instructor. True yoga goes beyond the mat; it is a way of life, as all of life is yoga. The discussion delves into the widespread popularity of yoga in the West. Max expresses gratitude for yoga's accessibility to people worldwide but also highlights some of the challenges. He notes that while yoga has become prevalent, it has also been diluted and misunderstood— which is especially notable with Tantra Yoga. People often miss the profound depths that the practice offers. Max emphasizes that yoga is not about achieving something but about unlocking the hidden potentials within oneself. It involves a non-violent approach (ahimsa) towards oneself and others. Yoga helps individuals integrate their physical, mental, and spiritual aspects, leading to a state of bliss (Ananda) and inner connection. Curious? Welcome to Episode #81 of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast! My conversation with Nathalie Bittar, a yoga teacher and the first yoga studio owner from Sudan, was enthralling as we took a deep dive into yoga as a complementary practice, not a competitive practice to religion. I hope that this conversation expanded your perception of how yoga can be a space for community, trust, and safety and how yoga can help you individually, and a community as a whole, shed defenses, shed armor, and help trauma to move through. If you're looking to tune into a podcast episode that is all about yoga in Sudan then this is the conversation for you. Support the podcast: https://www.patreon.com/wildyogatribe Tell me more about Nathalie Bittar  Nathalie Bittar opened the first yoga studio in the capital city of Khartoum in Sudan in 2008, named Blue Nile Lotus. She is trained in Vinyasa Yoga, Tibetan Heart Yoga, Anusara yoga and Jivamurkti yoga and more. With over 1,000 hours of training, she can't get enough yoga. Nathalie also leads yoga teacher trainings in Sudan, and leads yoga retreats worldwide. She is also a psychotherapist in Core Process Psychotherapy. For the skimmers - What's in the yoga in Sudan episode? Experiencing 9/11 first-hand and coming to yoga at that time in her life Shedding defenses, armor, and trauma through yoga The political unrest in Sudan and how yoga helps the Sudanese heal and move through trauma How and why yoga resonates with the Sudanese Advice for the next generation of yoga retreat leaders What to expect in the Yoga In Sudan episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast Nathalie was working and living in New York City when 9/11 happened. In fact, she worked in the towers. Not the ones that fell— the one across the street. She had just begun practicing yoga that same year, and kept going to practice throughout that time of enormous trauma and turmoil. Yet, as the practice healed her, it still felt like a mystery. That led Nathalie to do her first yoga teacher training, and she decided to move back to Sudan to open the first yoga studio in her country in 2008. We talked about what it was like for her to open the first yoga studio in Sudan, and if there was any pushback. She expressed fears about the police shutting it down or disturbing the classes, but fortunately, that never happened. We also talked about what a difficult time it has been in the last few years for Sudan, with overthrowing the government in April 2019 and just over 2 years later a military coup taking place in October 2021. Nathalie shared with us how has yoga helped her community during this time of turmoil. As Nathalie leads yoga retreats not just in Sudan, but worldwide, we also delved into what advice she has to offer to yoga teachers who are one day hoping of leading yoga retreats themselves. As Nathalie conveyed, always have a plan and always have an eraser!  This was a beautiful conversation about trauma, safety, trust, shedding defenses, and how healing can happen on and off the mat, in and outside of the studio, all with, through, and by… yoga! Welcome to Episode #79 of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast! This week, I welcome Chacal Lobos onto the show. My conversation with Chacal Lobos, a yoga teacher from Guatemala, was gorgeous. We took a swan dive into the ancestral and spiritual understanding of yoga as a discipline. Not as an art. Not as a science. As a discipline. I hope this conversation made you consider things differently, with Carlos' sharing of stories, parables, and myths. What to expect in the Yoga In Guatemala episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast Chacal Lobos is a storyteller. Specifically, he shared two beautiful parables with us, one of the first female monk and another of children rowing a boat during the nighttime. Carlos is a storyteller— and someone who got me to tell a story of my own on the show. Carlos is passionate about the ancestral practices of yoga, and of Guatemala. He shared with us how immensely beautiful his culture's ancient practices are — and how the day that we recorded, was actually a special day for such a conversation to take place. Every day has a different energy, according to the Mayan calendars, so he told us about how he lives his life connected with that path and with daily rituals of Mayan Cosmology, connecting with the ancestral and the divine.  Carlos conveyed that, ancestral practices never die. By practicing yourself, you help it to never die. As Carlos says, “Yoga has an essence and we are just translators.” Carlos views yoga not as a science, not as an art, but as a discipline. While this word may carry certain connotations, Chacal shared with us the root is discs, which means the openness to learn.” Tribu Ashtanga is a community that is both “open and empty” to follow the path of ashtanga yoga. For the skimmers - What's in the yoga in Guatemala episode? She teaches prenatal/postnatal yoga, and is a mother herself. As a student, she started off with Hatha Yoga. She was trained in Kemetic Yoga in Egypt and Afrikan Yoga in Kenya.  What to expect in the Yoga In Ethiopia episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast Heran was adopted from Ethiopia as a baby, and was raised in the Netherlands. She studied tropical forestry in University, and first came to yoga at that time in her life. She practiced and attended classes for 10 years before attending a yoga teacher training in Belgium. After receiving a job offer in Addis Ababa, she returned to Ethiopia. She works in the educational sector and teaches yoga in multiple studios.  Heran then took us on a deep dive of what Kemetic Yoga, which has it's roots in ancient Egypt which pre-dates yoga in India, though it is no longer a living part of Egyptian culture. It's about reconnecting with the ancestors, and is modeled after the hieroglyphics. It's akin to Iyengar yoga, with strict, static poses. Afrikan yoga was founded by a man from Jamaica who is based out of Kenya. This style draws upon movements that people make, in the whole Nile Valley. This could be movements that fishermen make, or women who are grinding wheat. There are series of movements, with a lot more flow and, in fact, dance. There is a huge focus on relating to the elements. Heran also walked us through all the diversity and beauty of her country, and about the history of yoga in Ethiopia and where she sees yoga going into the future. As there are only 20 yoga teachers, approximately, in her country— and as she is the most experienced practitioner in her country, she is often stopped on the street and people shout “yoga!” At her. She joins us in this episode to discuss the power of the subconscious mind, Emotion Code and Body Code, NLP and her amazing healing sanctuary space in Austin, Mandala Hills. Highlights: Mandala Hills continues to grow as a community based around nature, wellness and connection. What is Emotion Code and Body Code? Do these practices work remotely? Valerie walks us through the process -how it enables her to pinpoint the source of an issue. Most things that are out of alignment are due to what one key thing? Are misalignments always due to experiences in your life? Can Emotion Code & Body Code heal or clear into other generations, beyond just the person? Why is it so powerful to do healing work on the subconscious level? The value of both client and practitioner to flow with a session, releasing rigid expectations of what they want to happen. How does NLP work? Our incredible ability to harness our imagination for healing. The two paths that people tend to live from: either running from pain or towards pleasure. Many people don't realize they're constantly focusing on what they don't want. Valuable NLP practices anyone can do, like pattern interrupt and modeling The soaking culture in geothermal pools. If you're looking to tune into a podcast episode that is all about Universal Yoga, and the difference between being a yoga teacher and a yoga practitioner, then this is the conversation for you. Support the podcast: https://www.patreon.com/wildyogatribe Tell me more about Chek Lee Kong (Vera) Chek Lee Kong is a yoga teacher and studio owner in Brunei. She is the owner of Truharmony Yoga Studio in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. She teaches Hatha yoga (200hrs Certified Vikasa Yoga), Vinyasa Yoga- Fit Flow Fly (300hrs Bryce Yoga), and Universal Yoga (200hrs Certified). When the perfect opportunity arose, she renovated a space which is now Truharmony, located at Gadong Central in Brunei. Vera has also studied with dozens of yoga teachers around the world and completed so many workshops with Kino McGregor, Dylan Werner, Jason Crandell, Annie Carpenter, Sri Dharma Mittra, Tiffany Chruikshank, and more! What to expect in the Yoga In Brunei episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast What really peaked my interest was her 200hr Yoga Teacher Training in Universal Yoga. Universal Yoga is something I've never heard of before, and I was grateful that Vera took time to unravel how she first came to know about Universal Yoga and what Universal yoga is. Created and taught by Andrey Lappa. Universal Yoga has set sequences based on a highly scientific and anatomical approach.Yet, she says that Universal Yoga comes from within. The principle of Universal yoga is to always be awake and and to be conscious. It turns out that the founder of Universal Yoga is actually an engineer as well, so his attention to detail, anatomy, degrees of motion and movement is truly incredible. We talked also about how Vera— very recently— burned her legs very badly and has had to recover from this injury and return to her yoga practice and to teaching. For the skimmers - What's in the yoga in Brunei episode? What is Universal Yoga? Yoga that comes from within, not without What an engineer can bring to yoga as a teacher Being a yoga teacher is different from a yoga practitioner Recovering from badly burned legs and coming back to yoga Connect with Vera https://www.instagram.com/verayoga/ https://www.instagram.com/truharmony_yogastudio/ Want more? Līva first came to yoga around 15 years ago when she was seeking a deeper, more fulfilling physical practice. She found Hatha yoga and Anusara yoga first, and then came to Ashtanga vinyasa yoga, which has been an integral part of her life ever since. In ashtanga vinyasa yoga system her main teacher is Lino Miele and she has attended his retreats in India and also in Europe. In 2012, Līva decided it was time to do a yoga teacher training in Riga, Latvia as she still continue her work as a full-time lawyer. She began teaching at a local studio occasionally in the evenings, and after experiencing deep dissatisfaction in her career, she took a year off to go backpacking in New Zealand and completed a yin yoga teacher training with Markus Henning Giess and Karin Michelle Sang. Upon her return to Riga, Latvia, Līva learned that a yoga studio owner was selling her studio, and that is how she became the owner of Riga's Urban Yoga studio. She is a full-time teacher there, as well as the owner of the studio. She teaches ashtanga vinyasa yoga, flow vinyasa, and Yin yoga. For the skimmers - What's in the yoga in Latvia episode? How is Ashtanga yoga and yin yoga counterbalances for each other? Watching life fade away as a lawyer and then seeking change Why is it important for a yoga teacher to have their own self-practice? The different reasons why people come to yoga What to expect in the Yoga In Latvia episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast I really loved how Liva talked about asanas, as having the possibility to unlock the path of yoga not just as a “small part” of yoga which it is often criticized for being. Welcome to Episode #45 of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast! This week, I welcome Nicky Barnes onto the show. She is a yoga teacher from Vanuatu and she's also the co-founder of the leading Yoga Association in Vanuatu. It's donation based and, it has been for 13 years. My conversation with Nicola Barnes, a yoga teacher from Vanuatu was so delightful as we took a deep dive into the world of her yoga association in Vanuatu. And we also discussed how yoga is an art and an act of coming home. I hope that this conversation made you curious about balance and movement and expression, as well as the act of coming home to yourself without pressure without ego, without ambition, just coming home. Tell me more about Nicola Barnes Nicola Barnes started yoga seriously while living in London in the late 1990s. She became a yoga teacher in India at Neyyar Dam Sivinanda Ashram in 2003. Since then, she has taught in the Cayman Islands and in Vanuatu. She is the co-founder of the leading Yoga Association in Vanuatu, which is entirely donation-based and has been for 13 years. All of the yoga teachers in the Vanuatu yoga association volunteer their time. She teaches a mixed Hatha style, which is mostly asana based, but does involve pranayama. She has been teaching yoga for 19 years. The Vanuatu Yoga Association was set up so that yoga in Port Vila would have a sense of community and longevity. It also gives a forum for those who love to share their passion for yoga with others to instruct classes. The Vanuatu Yoga Association aims to support the local community by offering classes that are welcoming and affordable. What to expect in the Yoga In Vanuatu episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast I loved how Nicola highlighted how yoga exists in the real world— it's not a cartoon or a Hollywood creation. It exists in the raw, unexpected, natural way of life and of living. She pointed out how Instagram yoga with perfect hair, lovely beauty, and being picture-perfect isn't how yoga should really be viewed or considered— it's messy, raw, and includes all the hiccups and bumps in life! We also dove into how Nicky, along with two other co-founders, dreamed up the Vanuatu yoga association and decided to make it a nonprofit, volunteer based organization. Nicky expressed that, “It's just been amazing that trusting in the goodness of people and trusting that something that doesn't seem to be commercially logical can work.” For the skimmers - What's in the yoga in Vanuatu episode? Why found a yoga association in Vanuatu Let yoga be a natural evolution, don't push too hard Hollywood-style, glamorous Instagram yoga isn't the messy, raw, yoga of the real world Yoga and kitesurfing: balance, movement, expression The challenges of studio ownership on a small island Connect with Nicola Barnes https://web.facebook.com/PortVilaYoga/?_rdc=1&_rdr https://yoga.vu/ Want more?
