I've followed Ethan Embry on Twitter/X (he's on Bluesky now) for years now, and have always been fascinated with how well-versed he is on political and social issues. Today, I finally got to sit down with the Atlanta-based California transplant best known for his acting in cult favorites like 'Empire Records,' 'That Thing You Do,' 'Can't Hardly Wait,' 'Sweet Home Alabama,' and notable most recently as 'Coyote' in the Netflix series 'Grace & Frankie.'We hung for more than an hour and hardly even got to talk about his acting, outside of a project he's wrapping up on now. Next time, I promise (and he promised we'd do it again). Today we talked 'toxic masculinity,' how he found his voice on social media, his concerns with India & Pakistan flirting with nuclear war, the failures of the Biden media team, plus what he's doing between gigs to keep his hands and mind occupied.

Movie of the Year: 1996That Thing You Do (feat. contest winner Matthew Dewey!)Exploring That Thing You Do! – The Ultimate Feel-Good Rock and Roll MovieOn this episode of Movie of the Year, we dive deep into That Thing You Do!, the 1996 rock and roll movie that perfectly captures the meteoric rise of a one-hit-wonder. Directed by Tom Hanks, this film combines infectious energy, a toe-tapping original soundtrack, and an affectionate tribute to the music industry of the 1960s. Whether you're a fan of classic rock, catchy pop hits, or uplifting stories about bands making it big, this episode is a must-listen.That Thing You Do! – A Rock and Roll Movie with Unforgettable Original MusicFew films capture the spirit of an era as effortlessly as TTYD! does with its incredible original music. We break down how the title track, written by Adam Schlesinger, became a real-world hit, perfectly channeling the British Invasion-inspired sound that defined the 1960s. This episode examines the songwriting, standout performances, and how The Wonders (or the “Oneders”) created a fictional song that still resonates decades later. Why That Thing You Do! is the Ultimate Boomer Nostalgia TripBeyond being a fantastic rock and roll movie, TTYD!is also a prime example of what we call “boomer porn.” The film paints an idealized version of 1960s rock history, celebrating a time when bands could skyrocket to fame on sheer talent, drive, and a little bit of luck. We discuss how the movie plays into baby boomer nostalgia, romanticizing an era that felt innocent, exciting, and full of musical possibilities. Does it succeed in capturing the magic, or does it lean too heavily into nostalgia? How That Thing You Do! Still Rocks the Movie World TodayDecades later, TTYD! remains one of the most endearing rock and roll movies ever made. We discuss its lasting impact, from the performances of Tom Everett Scott, Liv Tyler, and Steve Zahn to the way it continues to resonate with new generations of movie lovers and music fans. Plus, we debate where it stands among the greatest music movies of all time.Tune In to the Movie of the Year Podcast for the Full That Thing You Do! BreakdownJoin us for this nostalgic, music-filled ride as we celebrate TTYD! and analyze what makes it a timeless rock and roll movie. If you love deep dives into classic films, this is one episode you won't want to miss. Listen now to Movie of the Year and relive the magic of TTYD!—you'll be clapping along in no time!

It's the final month of year, which means it's time again to celebrate the reason for the season and make it another DePalmber to ReMalmber as we fire up another Brian De Palma series, DePALMBER: PART DE, with 1987's The Untouchables, directed by De Palma, written by David Mamet, and starring Kevin Costner, Sean Connery, Andy Garcia, Charles Martin Smith, Robert De Niro, Billy Drago and Patricia Clarkson. A 1930s Chicago gangland drama about the prohibition war on Al Capone, it's a quintessential Dad Movie that found second life as a classic video store rental in the decade-plus after its release, and this week J Mo finally catches up with a movie that was the talk of the schoolyard some 25 years ago now. Plus: No trips to the theater to discuss this week, but we look to streaming for an in-depth report on the Taylor Swift / Travis Kelce fanfic Lifetime Original holiday film, Christmas In The Spotlight. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our discussion, The Untouchables is currently streaming on Paramount+ at the time of publication. Other works discussed in this episode include Constantine, Sweethearts, When Harry Met Sally..., Kiss The Girls, Our Little Secret, Den of Thieves, Under Paris, Downtown Owl, Anthony Jeselnik: Bones and All, American Gangster, Dear Santa, Smile 2, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, Josie and the Pussycats, That Thing You Do!, Blow Out, Mission: Impossible, Air Bud, The Departed, Infernal Affairs, and The Naked Gun 33 & 1/3 among others. DePalmber: Part De continues next week with Brian in full erotic thriller mode as we check out 1984's Body Double, which unfortunately at present is not available to stream in Canada but can be rented on YouTube and Cineplex. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

To close out the "Musicians on Film" cycle, Julian, Madeline and Emilio dig into the work of ace songwriter Adam Schlesinger, focusing on catchy pop songs he penned for three films - 'That Thing You Do!' (1996), 'Josie and the Pussycats' (2001), and 'Music and Lyrics' (2007).  Emilio and Julian break out guitars to point out some of the little details from early 60s rock n'roll and beyond that made their way into "That Thing You Do!", the irrepressible hit single from the movie of the same name.  The trio gets into how 'Josie and the Pussycats', and by extension Schlesinger's contribution "Pretend to Be Nice", both sends up the early 2000s music pop landscape and predicts the female punk pop explosion that was around the corner.  And the group gets into what works, and what doesn't work as well, in the execution of "Way Back Into Love", the song at the center of 'Music and Lyrics'.  All the while, discussions about the movies themselves supplement a lively conversation about Schlesinger and his most enduring cinematic bangers. If you enjoy our podcast, please rate and review us on your podcast platform of choice.  This really helps us find new listeners and grow!Follow us on IG and TikTok: @sleeplesscinematicpodSend us an email at sleeplesscinematicpod@gmail.comOn Letterboxd? Born and raised in Arkansas, Evan grew up playing drums at his dads church in Fort Smith. He was the kid that would sit behind the drummer during church and soak in every detail and nuance. Once church let out, he'd jump up on the kit and play, until the next church service started a few hours later. Evan got his first drum set at the age of 8 and began serenading his whole family and neighborhood with punk rock beats and the sounds of the radio. After touring the country with his band The Exception, Evan decided it was time to move to Nashville, TN and attend Middle Tennessee State under the direction of Lalo Davila and Tom Giampietro. It was in college where Evan honed his craft and wanted to become a studio musician. Years later and having played on multiple #1 songs on the radio, Evan is now an in demand studio drummer. You can hear his drumming with , Kenny Chesney, Reba McEntire, Luke Bryan, Jimmie Allen, Ronnie Dunn, Keith Urban, Steven Tyler, Toby Keith, Matt Stell, Maddie and Tae, Tim McGraw, Lauren Alaina, Erin McCarley, Rascal Flatts and many other artists.      Some Things That Came Up: -2:00 Started at 2 years old in church in Hot Springs,Arkansas  -3:45 first teacher was Sam Smith along with non stop playing and practicing  -5:00 school band and football.
