Welcome to How to Decorate! It has been quite a while since our last Trials and Triumphs episode, but Caroline, Taryn, and Liz are back with plenty of personal decorating updates. Between full basement renovations, bold reupholstery projects, and a very exciting upcoming video series, the hosts have been incredibly busy getting their homes in tip-top shape. Plus, learn why you should always provide your upholsterer with a detailed spec sheet—and why you might want to leave sewing box pleats to the professionals. Taryn's Trials & Triumphs: Guest Room Swap: Taryn officially transformed her downstairs primary bedroom into a guest room, painting the bed a beautiful muted green and bringing in some fresh floral pillows from Ballard Designs. She also finally brought up her old black picture frames from the basement to add contrast to the space. Basement Progress: The basement walls are finally closed in with drywall. Taryn and her husband created another guest bedroom (shopping the basement for leftover furniture and adding a queen mattress) and finished a bathroom complete with a tiled standing shower. Home Gym: Taryn finally got a dedicated workout room in the basement, requesting foam flooring, mirrors, box fans for air circulation, and a TV to check her lifting form. New Art & Wallpaper: Taryn hung a gallery wall on the back stairwell featuring a new briny, acidic green mixed-media floral painting from AK Hardman. She also installed a botanical grid Sanderson wallpaper in her breakfast room, making the window-filled space feel like a beautiful greenhouse. Taryn's Trial: Feeling confident after pulling her sewing machine out, Taryn spent eight hours attempting to sew her own box-pleat cushion covers for her dining chairs using a purple lilac gingham and maroon piping. It was a total disaster, looking more like a kindergarten drawing or a Catholic school skirt. Liz's Trials & Triumphs: House Tour Prep: The team is filming 10th-anniversary house tours for YouTube. The filming deadline gave Liz the kick in the pants she needed to finally tackle lingering projects. She replaced the original "boob lights" in the laundry room, swapped out a rusty bathroom vanity, and scrubbed and repainted her front security door. Pillow Perfection: Liz utilized Ballard Designs' free in-house design services to help coordinate and select all the pillows for her primary bedroom. Liz's Trial: Prepping to send her son Finn across the country for art school. They are clearing out old boxes—including one labeled "pre-move" from six years ago—and preparing for dorm life. She plans to eventually completely renovate his bedroom and bathroom, but is holding off until the dust settles from the college move. Caroline's Trials & Triumphs: Coffee Table Swap: Caroline decided against reupholstering a broken storage ottoman and instead purchased the Sabine coffee table from the Ballard outlet. She loves having a hard surface for entertaining snacks and a bottom shelf for styling design books. Chartreuse Bedding: Influenced by Taryn's love of the color, Caroline added the new wavy-patterned Violet bedding in chartreuse to her dark blue bedroom. Lamp Love: After borrowing a Sutton Tortoise mini glass lamp for the video shoot, Caroline loved it so much she bought it, pairing it with a ticking stripe brown shade to perfectly illuminate a corner of her kitchen counter. Caroline's Trial: Caroline took a TV room ottoman to be reupholstered in a hot pink Rebecca Atwood performance fabric. Because the performance fabric looked identical on both sides, the upholsterer accidentally sewed it inside out. They fixed it quickly, but Caroline (and Taryn) advise always making a detailed spec sheet with fabric swatches to avoid confusion when dropping off furniture. What home gym equipment is actually worth buying after the basics? In this Beast Over Burden legacy episode, Niki Sims and Matt Reynolds talk through strength training gear that solves real problems in a home gym, garage gym, or serious training setup. They discuss useful equipment beyond the barbell, rack, bench, plates, belt, and shoes, including monolift attachments, deadlift jacks, adjustable dumbbells, specialty bars, adjustable benches, dip stations, slingshots, bench blocks, pulley systems, bands, chains, leg curl and leg extension machines, wrist wraps, wrist straps, knee sleeves, and more. Niki and Matt explain how these tools can help lifters train around pain, overload lifts, add accessory work, build muscle, make training more enjoyable, and improve the overall home gym experience. This episode is a practical guide for lifters who want smarter home gym upgrades without wasting money on equipment they do not need. Basema is about to turn 43. She's a mom of two young daughters. When she reached out to me in 2023, she wasn't in a place where another workout plan was going to change her life. She was overwhelmed, isolated, depressed after having her girls, recovering from COVID isolation, the most overweighted she's ever been, and trying to hold everything together without family nearby. So we didn't start with training. For 6 months we worked only on life coaching. We focused on small steps, decision-making, execution, and habits a life she could consistently keep. Once that foundation was in place, we added training. Two years later, she's dropped more than 50 pounds, reversed her pre-diabetes, plays tennis, lifts several times a week, built a home gym, and completes 90-minute workouts even when she has to use the recordings instead of joining live. What makes her story remarkable isn't just the physical transformation. For more than two years she's continued to invest her time, attention, energy, and money into working with me closely. She didn't chase shortcuts. She kept showing up.When I asked her what she gained from all of this, she didn't say weight loss, muscle, or confidence. She said: “Sanity.”In this episode we talk about:• Why life coaching came before fitness training.• What changed during those first six months.• How she lost 50+ pounds without relying on motivation.• Learning to budget her energy instead of burning herself out.• Doing what she said she would do whether she felt like it or not.• Completing 90-minute workouts even when life got busy.• How accountability and long-term coaching changed her life.If you've been telling yourself you just need more discipline, listen to this episode.Sometimes the first step isn't another workout. It's learning how to run your life.If you're ready for that kind of transformation, book a complimentary Coffee & Goals consultation:
#105: What happens when one decision changes the trajectory of your life? In this episode of Reckoning, I sit down with James Stone to talk about his incredible journey from addiction and unhealthy habits to living with purpose, discipline, and intention. James shares the honest story of the night he decided enough was enough, how he began his fitness journey with nothing more than an old tire, a hand-me-down treadmill, and a pull-up bar on his front porch, and how that decision ultimately led him to win the MTN OPS Conquer Challenge, day hike Mount Whitney, complete ultra races and rucks, and build a life he's proud of. We also dive into: • Growing up in Texas and being introduced to the outdoors • Hunting, fitness, and fatherhood • His sobriety journey and navigating the social side of giving up alcohol • Building discipline when motivation fades • His community, The Forged Union, and helping other men become stronger in every area of life James was incredibly open throughout this conversation, and I'm so grateful he trusted us with his story. Whether you're working toward better health, considering cutting back on alcohol, chasing a goal, or simply looking for encouragement, I think you'll find something in this episode that resonates.
