In this episode Matt and I chat over how years of using and abusing his body eventually led him to yoga where he explored his curiosity for understanding his unique path to feeling better. About Matt Yoga instructor Matt Giordano gives credit to an influential figure from his teenage years – his high school art teacher – for sparking within him the curiosity and tenacity that eventually led him to yoga. It was Eileen Walk who told Giordano, “You are not allowed to say ‘I can't.' You must rephrase to a question: ‘How?'” That inquisitive and unrelenting spirit laid the foundation for Matt to begin a devoted yoga practice. When coupled with his passion to understand the physics and subtle alignment of the body, Matt's dharma as a teacher came into focus. Originally from Sea Cliff, Long Island, Giordano spent 7 years developing his teaching style while living in Manhattan, where he taught at local studios (Pure NYC, Equinox). Matt now travels internationally to teach his signature technique-based style of yoga, educating yoga students on how to use their bodies in a profound and life-changing way. Well known for his ability to guide students deeply into postures with his refined attention to detail and precise action cues, Giordano is an adept guide for students of all levels at festivals, workshops, and in his weekly studio classes. His study of biomechanics and integrative mind-body techniques informs his teaching, as he draws upon wisdom from traditions of yoga, martial arts (Aikido and Tae Kwon Do), acrobatics, AcroYoga, and Thai Yoga Massage. Matt is known to inspire humble confidence, allowing students to find ease while expanding the edge of their comfort zones. In 2016, Matt created and founded an international school of yoga that focuses on community, growth and authentic teaching, and he hosts trainings each year out of his home in northwest Connecticut. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Learn More with Matt:Matt Giordano website Matt's YouTube Matt's Instagram ----------------------------------------------------------------- My Socials: Celest's Instagram Celest's Website Too Flexible To Feel Good Book

For today's episode, we talk with Jonn, the founder and owner of Body Curious. Following an accident, Jonn was left with 15% whole body permanent impairment. However, through a combination of rehabilitation and yoga, he was able to restore his body function. This inspired him to create Body Curious in 2014, a men's only yoga studio committed to improving health outcomes for men. He is a qualified Yoga, Thai Yoga Massage teacher & Practitioner, and a Sexological Bodywork Practitioner. Early on, Jonn realised that his studio was attracting more men than women. So, with this information, he decided to focus on men. This opportunity to cater to only men brought about the first of his now many Naked Yoga sessions. His 1st class of Naked Yoga was attended by 20 naked men. In case you're wondering, yes, naked – meaning complete, pure natural bodies showing. Jonn also talked about his sexological work, how it works, why it's different from the others, and what it can and can't do. Interestingly, the discussion also touched upon personal pleasure, why it's important to understand how to explore yourself and how to teach children about this quite taboo but important topic. How early should a child use a cellular phone? What happens if they get exposed to porn? When is the best time to discuss sex and pleasure with them? Why is it important to let children know that they should not be ashamed of pleasure? And so many more compelling topics that we know you'll surely relate to. Research shows that Humans don't simply want touch; we need it. When we don't get enough positive human touch, we can develop a condition called touch deprivation, which can increase stress, anxiety, and depression and lead to numerous additional negative physiological effects. As a response to stress, your body makes a hormone called cortisol. This can cause your heart rate, blood pressure, muscle tension, and breathing rate to go up, which in turn negatively effects your immune and digestive systems. Individuals who go without positive physical touch for a long period can even suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Today on Discovering True Health we are going to learn about how Thai yoga therapy massage can be a powerful tool in trauma recovery and the healing process. We'll also learn about what the cycle of trauma is and how how trauma can get trapped in our mind and body. And we'll be discussing what touch literacy is and the biological importance of human contact. And the negative impacts of our touch-deprived society which have been exasperated with the pandemic. My guest is Drew Hume, Founder and Director of Navina, a Thai Yoga Therapy School based out of Costa Rica. At his school he educates his students on the physical forms of Thai Massage, touch-literacy, and human biology. And his broader mission is to ensure that as a culture, we become more touch-literate and help dissolve the culturally ingrained habits that have been spread out of the fear of touch. Every massage therapist has wondered at some point WHY their client disappeared never to return. Everyone who has ever had high hopes for getting a decent massage has sadly been disappointed (or dare I say it - HURT) at least once. Then there are some therapists who find their business becoming so successful they cant cope with the rapid influx of clients. And others who have got unbelievably long standing relationships with their clients for one reason alone. In this weeks episode we are talking WELLNESS in a deep sense of the word. For many years it has been my passion to raise the standards of massage. I have been injured too many times (broken ligaments and ribs as an example) by well meaning but poorly trained practitioners. It was clear they had gone down the cheap and fast route to being qualified (and nearly got themselves sued as a result). As a teacher with over 3 decades of experience what I can do is help create a new narrative and prevent harm in our industry. I believe wellness starts with the therapist being well (not straining or burning out) and the client having a tailored treatment that makes them snore and dribble. Why right now is THE time to become a massage therapist - adding to your skills so you can seamlessly grow a client base of super fansMy personal journey - from abuse and drug taking - to being the founder of London Institute of Thai Yoga Massage and a published author I also talk candidly about abuse and trauma and the charity work I have done over the years to support clients in hospitals in tragic circumstancesI am sure if you are in the wellness industry you have your own journey connecting you to your WHY and my hope is that this episode will inspire you to go deeper - this world needs more healers and therapists right now Finally, I teach you a little about the 5 Buddhist elements covering some basics about what might be your element type - water, fire or wind and HOW Thai Massage therapists can tailor treatments to suit you so you never have to experience the pain of wasting your money on a treatment againAfter listening to this episode, remember to come over to Instagram and DM me to tell me where you are stuck right now (this could be anywhere in your life and business). To download my 12 simple steps to fully booked in 10 days click hereAbout Natasha:Natasha de Grunwald is a subconscious transformation coach, a mentor, a teacher, trainer, breathwork facilitator and a Mum to a 19 year old daughter. Natural Awakenings By Isabelle Muscat Maybe you've heard of Reiki but don't quite know what it is. Perhaps you're considering Reiki but aren't sure whether it's right for you. Whatever your questions, Isabelle Muscat is here to help. She walks team Vamp through the basics of Reiki - a safe, gentle, non-invasive form of natural hands-on, energy-based healing - and what it can do for your body. In 2007, Isabelle first introduced herself to the world of Health and Holistic Wellness when passing through a challenging period in her life. Her passion in the subject continued to evolve when she met a special Reiki master who mentored her all the way into energy healing. After going through a separation, her life turned into another direction, and when her parents were diagnosed with several health issues. The challenges and emotional turmoil throughout this period were many. Thankfully, Isabelle was given an opportunity to visit Bali, where she met an extraordinary Guru, named Prabhu Darmayasa, from the Divine Live Society in Indonesia, Bali, in 2011, where she was introduced to the art of Angka Meditation. After this transformational visit, Isabelle expanded her knowledge in mindfulness and various energy healing practices such as Reiki, Indian Head Massage, Hopi Ear Candle Therapy, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Non-Medical Nutrition, Therapeutic Massage Treatments, Thai Yoga Massage, YOGA and YOGA teacher training. What is Reiki? Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands”, based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us. If one's “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. The word Reiki has two meanings, Rei is the Universal Life Force Energy that is the spark in every atom of the universe. Ki (in Chinese it is referred to as “Chi” & Prana in Sanskrit] is our Vital Life Force. The free and balanced flow of Ki is the cause of good health. Ki flows within the physical body through pathways called meridians and around us in a field of energy called the aura. Ki nourishes the organs and cells of the body, supporting vital functions. A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person, including body emotions, mind and spirit, creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security, and wellbeing. How did you come to discover Reiki? I discovered Reiki when I was following the Non-Medical Nutrition course, where I met my Reiki Master, who guided me throughout this beautiful therapy. She taught me how to master reiki and how to use reiki to cope with daily life challenges. Has it changed you and your practice? Reiki has undoubtedly changed me in many ways. It has been and still forms part of my spiritual development, and I long daily to use and share this healing therapy in my daily life and therapeutic practice. Nowadays, I add this treatment into one of my services, especially where I access that a client requires further emotional support and healing apart from physical treatment. Have you seen it make a difference to people? I have seen many beautiful souls heal and change; this is one of my greatest accomplishments, especially feeling people's aura evolve throughout the sessions. Reiki does not change the person during the session only, but every single day until the person decides otherwise for one reason or another. What would you say to those that are sceptical of such practices? “Have you tried this therapy? If yes, what was your experience? If no, I suggest you try it out before you decide and will look forward to your feedback afterwards.” I believe every person can be sceptical to any treatment, not just Reiki. However, when a person is ready for a change, either physical or emotional, the practiti

On today's episode I'm very excited to introduce you to Erin Telford who was my first ever breathwork teacher and is a person that I honour, admire, respect, and I'm very inspired by. We cover so much ground and talk about so many different subjects such as what do we hold sacred, grief, spirit and finding what it is that connects us rather than separates us. Erin is passionate about using her voice and this comes across beautifully.I would love to hear your thoughts about this episode and don't forget to leave me a review and rating if you loved it. About Erin:Erin Telford is a Breathwork facilitator, teacher trainer, intuitive guide and space holder. She began her healing career over a decade ago as an acupuncturist, Chinese herbalist and Reiki Master. Her work guides people to look within, open their hearts and heal their relationship with themselves. Her group sessions, trainings and retreats empower her clients to connect to their innate wisdom so that they can find the healing and the answers that exist inside within their bodies and spirits. Erin believes that we all hold core wounds and limiting beliefs that subconsciously run our lives. When we somatically release them from the emotional body and the nervous system, there is freedom on the other side. Our emotions are messengers with information that let us know where to direct our healing and compassion. By de-stigmatizing emotions and the human experience, we can take shame off the table and start to really deal with what's under the depression, anxiety, and patterns that keep us contracted. She has created Breathwork experiences for Free People, the Soul Cycle/Soul Legends retreat, In goop Health NYC and Wanderlust Festival. In today's episode I speak to Delroy who shares with us his journey through drug addiction, the 12 step program and prison to find peace and breathwork on the other side. He is truly inspirational showing what self exploration and being open can truly do for you. I was thrilled to meet him at a recent festival where I heard him speak and knew that I had to bring his message to the listeners of this podcast. About Delroy:I came from a loving but dysfunctional family. I used drink and drugs to cover up feelings of emotional pain then there was the added bonus I loved the way they made me feel. I ended up in prison aged 19 then my world started to get smaller. I ended up homeless for many years getting arrested another 54 times which ended in 16 prison sentences. On my last sentence, 8 years in the drugs stopped numbing my emotional pain and I hated the way they made me feel. I got some help and then started to help myself.I ended up "Finding Peace in Prison".I only needed to change one thing and that was everything about myself!Contact Delroy at abundance270672@gmail.com About Natasha:Natasha de Grunwald is a subconscious transformation coach, a mentor, a teacher, trainer, breathwork facilitator and a Mum to a 19 year old daughter. It is a calm place in Jeevanahalli, where Cyriac Joseph and Roshni Davidson are practitioners of Thai yoga massage at the School of Thai Yoga Massage. “It is a combination of Thai massage, acupressure, and yoga. When you do yoga yourself, you may not be able to stretch as much as you will when someone pushes your body. Combined with a good massage this is a great stress buster,” explains Cyriac, the trained instructor. She's on a quest to empower and heal. Years ago, Jessica Van Antwerp was a typical college student searching for answers to life's conundrums. Still figuring out what to do with her future, Jessica changed her major from business to philosophy (dad was not happy.) This one decision tells us so much about her - Jessica is a thinker. A critical thinker. A big thinker. Finding business school to be a bore, she fell in love with philosophy, which fit her like a glove, and those thinking skills she picked up would serve her well as an adult. She never stopped asking big questions and seeking truth. Jessica was an athlete in high school, and she was always interested in health and fitness. Over the years, she has lived on a vegetarian diet, but some severe health results (that she shares with Wade) brought her back to eating meat. If you struggle with addiction, be sure to tune in as Jessica talks about her seven-year daily addiction to weed. She has also leaned on alcohol and even nicotine at times during stressful periods. Today, those substances are far behind her. Still relatively young (late 30s), Jessica has overcome addictions, stress, and childhood trauma through two powerful physical and emotional therapy modes: traveling and massage. Today, Jessica is an entrepreneur whose business focuses on both travel and Asian massage therapy. She is the owner and CEO of Integral Travel - a wellness retreat company that educates people on how to unlock the natural healing capacity of their bodies while connecting people around the globe. She draws on over a decade of experience in the health and wellness industry. Her experiences with anxiety, weight, low self-esteem, and addiction are also huge contributors to her knowledge base today. Jessica is also a licensed massage therapist trained in several eastern schools of massage, including Shiatsu, Qigong, Thai Yoga Massage, and other energy modalities. Her story will grab you by the qi. Don't miss this fantastic conversation between Jessica and our host, Wade Lightheart. You'll learn a whole lot during this 80-minute journey. In this podcast, we cover: Jessica and Wade geek out over the topic of philosophy The childhood wounds Jessica discovered that were holding her back and how she overcame those traumatic memories The various modes of massage Jessica practices and how they help people Jessica's profound spiritual moment Jessica's transition from staunch atheist to belief in a “higher power” How Jessica overcame weed addiction From low self-worth to self-love What are Qigong and its ancient medicinal practices Jessica's nervous breakdown and how she found restoration The answers lie within, not outside of you. During the show, Jessica talks about when she first discovered a particular form of Qi gong called Sheng Zhen Gong, which means unconditional love. Here's an excerpt: “I immediately felt its power. I went from feeling qi in the palms of my hands to feeling it in my entire body. And I felt my heart. It was like that scene from the Grinch, where his heart grows three times and busts out.” “I felt this in my whole body, and I knew this was my medicine. I dove into the practice. Within a month, I was at a five-day meditation retreat with Master Li, the founder of Sheng Zhen. In China, he trained with a women's martial arts team for over a decade. He's a Kung Fu movie star. This guy knows what he's doing in relation to energy. And so I practiced every day for six months before I felt normal. Meanwhile, very little had changed about my external circumstances.” “I think this is the key I want anyone listening to understand - sometimes there's not a lot you can do about the stressors in your life. They are your responsibilities, your obligations. What you can do is change your relationship with them.” Gaining New Perspectives You may already have a taste of the impact a retreat can provide - particularly a focused, organized retreat. As the CEO of Integral Travel, Jessica offers powerful wellness retreats. She says: “That's sort of the pinnacle of what we offer during a multi-day experience, just immersing or exploring one's inner terrain while the attendee is exploring an outer terrain that is unfamiliar.” “The newness sheds new light and gives perspective on what you're confronting and learning about yourself through the internal practices that we do - yoga, qi gong, meditation - how it takes you out of your day-to-day routine so you can look back and ask yourself, “Okay, what aspects of this are working for me, supporting my health, my vitality, making me feel good? What aspects of my daily life are not so good?” “What do I want to change? That's the magic of going on a retreat - giving conscious attention to your life and yourself, as opposed to just going on vacation, feeding on activities.” “A retreat is different. It's about inner reflection for long-term change in your life.” Don't feel ashamed if life seems overwhelming. Jessica has been there. She worked 90 hours per week at one point and had a nervous breakdown. With refreshing honesty and compassion, she shares the high and low points of her life. Dealing with addictions, emotional hurts, workaholism, and then the spiritual turning point that led to healing travels and life-altering rejuvenation through eastern meditation, yoga, and qi gong. Let's be honest, it's not really about the pasta. Whenever we find ourselves upset or not at peace - it helps to recognize that it's often not about that thing. It was actually about all the built up hurt, anger, frustration or needs that have not been met within us. If we're willing to be honest, sometimes we lose our cool over the smallest shit and to the person on the receiving end - it seems like we've lost our ever loving mind. Ha! When the reality is that leading up to this moment in time, we've been pushing down, shoving into the cupboard or closets of our bodies and minds, all of our internal frustrations. Stuff has been building up and the emotional landmine has been set. Only to one day, have something that seems insignificant such as “the pantry being out of pasta” - trigger us, push a button or set us off. BOOM! And Lord help the poor suckers or accused that lie in our wake or stand in our way. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're taking a look at what it means to be really open and honest about how we're feeling “along the way” and dealing with them as things come up - rather than holding it all in until we literally explode all over the next person that happens to walk into the room. Sometimes, when we're unhappy or suffering, we think it's about the thing that just happened or the button that got pushed by someone else, but it's not. It's almost never about that or them. In order to heal and deepen our relationships with ourselves and others, we have to be vulnerable, take ownership and delve more deeply into the heart of things, so we can recognize that at the end of the day - it's not about the pasta. Have you ever heard the statement, “I'm about to go all ‘woo, woo' on you”? I was thinking to myself the other day, “Why does everybody feel the need to apologize for the “woo”?” Why do people lead with a warning, like; “OK, so I'm about to go all ‘woo', on you” as if all the adults in the room need to prepare themselves or perhaps they couldn't handle it. It's as if we have some sort of fear that others will not take us seriously (as a leader or a business person or whatever) or that we'll be judged for trusting our intuition, discussing spirituality or leading with love. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're looking at the reasons why we should stop saying sorry for opening up spiritually with others. When we apologize or give them a warning for what we're about to say, we're sending out a signal that people should somehow be ashamed and uncomfortable about their spirituality and personal growth. The thing is, we're all children of God/Universe and we all have intuition & gut feelings, etc. - that makes us spiritual beings that are an extension of the loving Divine. We are Spirit having a human experience. Our whole life is our spiritual life and as I jokingly say, “It's not “woo-woo, it's true-true.” Ha! So maybe it's time to stop apologizing for it, start embracing it and share it openly with the world. One of the challenges of being human is that the ego-mind automatically leads with its opinions, judgements, and stories that will either build others up or more likely tear them down. It has no neutral thoughts and it's almost always sure that it's right and because of this, we think we know and understand where someone else is coming from. We write stories, apply meaning and assign ourselves the role of judge and jury. What we learn however, as we move through life is that we actually don't know the whole picture or truth when it comes to others. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about having the willingness to let go of our judgements and allowing our preconceived ideas to fall away. It's an invitation to practice being more kind. We honestly never really know what someone else has gone or is going through. We don't know what their reality is or what it's like to be them. We can't possibly even begin to understand until we have a willingness to get personal, listen and talk to others about these things. It's not always an easy task to set aside our perspectives and opinions - but the only way we're going to get through this life together - is if we put down our judgements, lead with curiosity and love, step up as instruments of peace and Be Kind, Be Kind, Be Kind. Dr. Barter chats with friend and acupuncturist, Corinne Lohss all about cosmetic acupuncture. They discuss the methodology behind why facial acupuncture is safer than surgical and chemical anti-aging procedures such as face-lifts and Botox. Learn what to expect from cosmetic acupuncture treatments, how long the results can last and who makes an ideal candidate for this safer and all-natural protocol.About our guest:Corinne has a private acupuncture practice in Northwest Denver. She came to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) after a long search for a fulfilling career in the healthcare world. She always knew that she wanted to be a healer, but one who looks at the entire individual as a whole, and not just a collection of symptoms that need to be treated. Frustrated with aspects of the allopathic medical world when dealing with some injuries and personal issues, Corinne found TCM and realized it was the perfect fit. Corinne trained at Southwest Acupuncture College in Boulder, CO, earning her graduate degree, a Masters of Science in Oriental Medicine. She is recognized by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCOAM) as a certified acupuncturist and is licensed by the state of Colorado. She incorporates all the modalities of TCM, including needling, cupping, guasha, Shiatsu, Tui Na, moxa, nutritional counseling, electric stimulation, and Chinese herbal therapies. She also studied as a Thai Yoga Massage therapist, yoga instructor, and uses a lot of bodywork techniques in her treatments for a very hands on approach. During school Corinne did a year long externship at Colorado University Boulder and treated many of the student athletes. Corinne has many areas of interest in her practice, including women’s health, sports related injuries, chronic pain, digestive issues, as well as anxiety and stress related issues. After graduating from Southwest Acupuncture College Corinne did a course on Mei Zen Cosmetic Acupuncture. She selected this specialty training because she wants people to feel and look the best that they can, safely and naturally.
“You need to be special!” is a message that we're constantly being bombarded with when it comes to our personal and professional social media presence. This is especially true as entrepreneurs and business owners in the digital age. We've been taught that amongst a sea of people, profiles and posts - it's essential to our success - that we not only have an online presence and platform, but that we must also have a strategy for “standing out”. But what if that approach is wrong? What if we're causing both ourselves and our business unnecessary suffering in the relentless pursuit of trying to “stand out” on social media? How much suffering are we humans willing to cause ourselves in our need to be special, seen or have significance? Today on The Karen Kenney Show, I sat down to talk with super-smarty pants business coach Bill Baren about how much energy we waste trying to answer the ego's call to specialness and just how freeing it can be to embrace our insignificance in the world. Plus, we discuss and explore the power and joy of trusting your intuition and your Spiritual Team to guide you and keep you on the path that you're meant to be on. The term “stay in your own lane” can mean different things to different people and we're going to dive into a couple of ways of looking at this. Most of the time as adults, when we say “Stay in your lane” - it's to tell others to stay out of our business or to keep the focus on what they themselves are doing. Just like when we were little kids and the teachers would advise us, “Keep your eyes on your own paper!” (Who else remembers that?) Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that there aren't any instances where we should speak up, cross a line and say something about an incident/photo/picture that we see online or physically take action when we see an injustice. There are definitely times we need to step out of our lane and do something to bring about necessary change or to stop abuse of others whether they be animals, humans or the environment. But for the most part, especially online, it would behoove us to practice shutting our mouths and moving on. Another way of interpreting “stay in your own lane”, is stick to what you know and stick to what you're good at. Don't try to pretend to be what I call “a four-lane highway.” Ha! Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about minding our own damn business & if you do have a business, to know what you're actually qualified to offer and practice. Like it says in a Course of Miracles ‘You cannot teach what you have not yet accepted for yourself”. How can we expect to direct anyone towards anything that we have not yet consistently practiced in our own lives? Without our own personal life experiences to base our reflections, wisdom or feedback on, we have nothing to inform others with. We don't know what it feels like to perhaps be in their position. Of course, we can always learn about other skills and have new experiences in the world but until we do have something of depth to contribute it might be best to stay in our own lane. In doing so, we can avoid doing more harm than good to those around us. KK's Key Takeaways Stick To What You're Good At (8:25) I Really Try To Stay In My Lane (17:16) Standing In Confidence Doesn't Make Me Right (26:41) Attend To Our Own Business (31:55) Be Curious (35:20) You Can Do More Damage (39:12) Karen Kenney is a writer, speaker, spiritual teacher, host of The Karen Kenney Show Podcast, founder of Fearless Flow™ Mentoring & creator of THE NEST Spiritual Membership. There's a quote I heard that I've been contemplating that says how people should, “Praise in public & critique in private.” I've got a few thoughts now on this point of view and one of the things that informed me in my mulling and musing about it is an even older saying that tells us that “our words should pass through 3 gates before we ever write them or speak them out loud.” Before we open our big fat mouths (ha!) and utter a word, we should ask ourselves: Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary? When we're dealing with one-to-one communication with human beings, it would behoove us to have our first thought be, “What is the most loving or kind way I can handle this?” And then proceeding by sometimes speaking about their strengths first, before talking about where growth needs to happen. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we are taking a look at the differences between criticism versus feedback and how we can be working this on either side of that fence. Whether that be externally with those around us or how we internally speak to ourselves. Whomever we are speaking to, we must first understand that our words matter. An approach of curiosity and love instead of judgement allows us to ask the kind of questions that open the doors of thought, inspiration and insight. Rather than eliciting a response of attack, defend or prove. This isn't always the easiest road to travel because sometimes our input means that others (and even ourselves) have to take a look at painful spots we'd rather not deal with and prefer to ignore. Having a level of tenderness in our approach helps to, at the very least, make the process bearable and something we can face more willingly. Being mindful and intentional in our communication will help us to create a more loving, kind world where people can feel supported, seen and know that they matter. With the world being how it is in this moment, now is not the time to stick our heads in the sand. If you are here on the planet right now, I believe it's for a reason and a greater purpose. Sometimes, we need to turn to our Spiritual Team to help figure out what that is. When we find ourselves in situations where we feel overwhelmed, defeated, scared, anxious or worried it's helpful to remember the words of Clarissa Pinkola Estés; “We Were Made For These Times”. I believe that our lives have been preparing us for this moment. Sometimes, if you feel not up to the task, we can call upon the strength of the Divine, our Inner Teacher and our Spiritual Team to help us to “act well and wisely”. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about knowing and stepping into our purpose. What are we adding to the world around us? What is it that we are bringing to the table? Each voice matters and I want to encourage you to use yours with the support of your Spiritual Team. From the loss of a younger sister in a car accident by a drunk driver, to finding & fighting the cancer of her then 2 year old son, my guest has experienced some of life's most painful experiences. Through it all she has found a way to connect with others and build community where there was none. As a nationally recognized award-winning business owner, her dedication and ability to build relationships has afforded her the opportunity to work with top name celebrities & high profile clients. Courtney's love for design won her national recognition for the United States Postal Service when she designed a postage stamp for the Seacoast African American Cultural Center. Recently, Courtney founded and created a membership called “No To Patterns™” which is a Seacoast organization born out of necessity to address the lack of accommodations available to Black, African-American and POC who live in NH. Social media has a grip on society and it's changing the way we interact with each other and even ourselves. The addiction to using it, getting those likes and views are at a concerning level with dire consequences to our human connections and psyche. This is especially true with teenage girls and young women who are up over 300% in anxiety, depression and suicide rates since the introduction of social media platforms. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we are taking a look at a documentary called; “The Social Dilemma” and the effect of social media on the world population and its interactions with one another. The major player tech giants such as; Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, Google and Twitter have manipulated and worked to rewire the human brain through their data tracking, algorithms, and by giving out gamification dopamine responses to our interactions online. Of course this doesn't mean that being online is all bad, but it comes down to being self and socially aware of exactly what it looks like and what we're all playing a part in. Are we addicted to these platforms and allowing these tech giants to boldly manipulate us or are we really in control of our actions and reactions. There comes a point in this Social Dilemma where we have to ask; what's my level of participation going to be? Our internal peace of mind and happiness are extremely important to our overall well being. In order to find that for ourselves we have to stop and take the time to really look at where it is that we came from and heal the wounds of our past. The truth is it doesn't matter how we got here, we are here and who we are because of it; belongs to us. It is a part of who we are right down to the core. The question then now must be “what are we going to do with where we came from now that we have arrived in this place today of our lives today?” How are we going to react or respond to the different scenarios we find ourselves in? Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we are taking a look at who it is we used to be and who it is we can be. It is not always an easy journey. It requires effort, work and sometimes painful steps. I wasn't always this way myself but after years of working on healing my past wounds and training my mind and heart how to tie into a deep connection with the Divine I find myself more available and open to living in a happier state of being. This does not mean I never take notice of the darkness in this world but because of this healing I am able to not allow myself to live in it. It is not always sunshine and rainbows every day because there is no such thing as earthly perfection but there can be a level of happiness that can be achieved every day if we are only willing to do the hard and difficult work on ourselves that is required to get there. In our lives we're often looking for consistency. We want to know that we can count on certain things to be available to us or have particular people show up for us - whether that be in our personal, spiritual or professional lives. Where there's reliability & responsibility - there's trust - and relationships can start to build on that foundation of faith. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about how the consistency of showing up and taking inspired action - plays a huge role in the success in our lives. It's not enough to just sit back on our ass in our comfy belief that because we've asked our Spiritual Team to help us they will. I mean, of course they will, but we as the individual have to step up and do our part We have to be willing to move our feet forward and do the damn work. Ha! We have to turn on the lights, show up for ourselves and others and be the reliable source of support & action in the world that we also want for our own. If you want the Divine, your Spiritual Team or others in life to help you - You Gotta' Be Open For Business! KK's Key Takeaways What Do I Mean? In this world, there are a lot of reasons why we find ourselves tempted to go into a contracted state of being. A place we want to tuck into for protection. This pulled in, tightened up reaction creates a realm of separation - where we not only feel removed from the love of those around us - but also from the true essence of who we are meant to be. This ego conditioning limits our ability to love and be loved. When we're wrapped up so tightly in our fear, we can't expand into the wholeness and holiness of ourselves. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about the difference between Contraction & Expansion as it pertains to our human experience. Are we joining relationships & spaces where we have the room to grow and expand? Or are we living in a “closed fist” state of being? A contracted state of mind, limits our capacity to give or receive love. It can take us out at the knees and leaves us feeling hurt, angry, victimized and damaged. Instead, what if we met ourselves and each other with openness and curiosity, instead of being closed and judgemental? So, no more “saran-wrapping” ourselves. No more tucking our tails & clenching our fists. Instead, let's choose to move into the spaces of expansion and Divine Love. It's time to spread our tail feathers and fully embrace & embody the child of God we really are. Are you ready to create more expansion in your life? My meditation teacher taught me that a mind that moves too fast does not have the ability to love. WHOA! A mind that is unable to slow down, pause and choose its response, will find itself running around and reacting to life. Reacting is a kind of an automated fear-based trigger that stems from our past experiences and conditioned thinking. It keeps our minds stuck in the ego-loop and at the mercy of our immediate emotions and feelings. How we speak and act is generated by our thoughts and if we don't train our mind to have the capability to stop and question what it is that we think we're seeing and hearing before we can make a conscious choice as to how we want to “respond”, we just might find ourselves reacting; saying and doing things we regret and can't really take back. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about the Power of the Pause and how just a few seconds to think before hitting go can make all the difference in the world. KK's Key Takeaways Practice The Pause (2:00) That's Where The Magic Is (10:35) Damage Is Already Done (19:18) Go Back To My Right Mind (29:07) Remember To Pause & Pray (39:45) Karen Kenney is a writer, speaker, spiritual teacher, host of The Karen Kenney Show Podcast, founder of Fearless Flow™ Mentoring & creator of THE NEST Spiritual Membership. Most people in this world want to be liked and accepted. But the truth is… sometimes in life, no matter what we do or say, certain people are just not going to like us. For whatever reason, they're simply not a fan (HA!) and if we resist this fact, it can be extremely draining, mentally and emotionally, trying to contort ourselves into who or how they would prefer us to be. If we keep looking outside of ourselves, for validation, wanting everybody to like us, understand us or to celebrate us, we are going to be murderously disappointed. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about “people pleasing”. That soul-sucking, exhausting racket that will only work to break us down and make us resentful of others. It's time to stop wasting your energy trying to be liked by everybody else and work on loving ourselves. In order to live as God/Divine/Spirit intended us to be, we have to be willing to write our own authentic story, where we step out of the box the world tries to put us in and live the glory that is our true destiny. OK, so this might seem like a total no-brainer, but it's something that my Spiritual Team recently gave me a hysterical & humbling reminder about ----> We cannot fix a problem until we can clearly identify who, what or where the source of the problem is coming from. Until then, we'll just keep throwing away our precious resources; money, time, energy and exhaust ourselves in the process of trying to fix, help, find or heal. Today on The Karen Kenney Show we're asking the simple but powerful question; “What the heck stinks?” and taking a closer look at what's required to figure that out, in our personal or professional lives. Then we can seek out the true source and get to work, so that the physical, mental or emotional “stench” won't continue to follow us around or haunt us. This may include taking a deeper, sometimes painful look within ourselves to get to the bottom of the issue: Are we the cause of our own suffering? Or is it really someone or something else in our lives? No matter what or who is the source of the problem; before we can deal with it or in order to heal it, we must first get real about it and admit that something here isn't right - “Something Stinks”. Sometimes in life we find ourselves feeling lost, confused or “discombobulated” (that's such a great word - HA!) when stepping into a new area of our life where we become the “complete beginner” again. This experience of the unknown can leave us feeling as if everything we've built and created before this moment is falling away and we find ourselves unable to see a way home to our true way of being. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, I talk with my dear friend Bill Baren, “The Business Oracle” and we take a look at the fears that keep us from being real with others, the pathway back to freedom and the 3 Steps to take When Things Are Falling Apart. In this world today (especially with the presence of social media) we're constantly being asked to be noticed, to stand out and to prove ourselves so that we can appear or feel “special”. We create, write, post and share stuff “out there” - which leads us into a constant state of wanting or having to be validated by others. This whole separation & specialness “dog & pony show” that we participate in... is the playground/battleground of the ego. And it's a racket... that almost always ends in some kind of suffering. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about getting stuck in the habit of looking to others (outside of ourselves) in order to know or believe how good of a person we are, how valuable our ideas/work/creativity/services/products are or and why we deserve to be loved. What we need to understand is that sometimes we're going to have people in our lives that don't get us, don't understand our mission or where it is that we're coming from or going to. People will sometimes resist your growth, your change, your pivot or your vision. They might even try to hold you back, get in your way or withhold their support and love. And that's exactly when you need to step up, grab the stamp & validate your own parking. Who we choose to have sitting “at our table” works to influence how we feel, how we act and the decision process of choices that we move ourselves through. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about all things wonderfully geek (HA!); Merlin, King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table as they pertain to our own life and our powerful and influential table of 12. Like King Arthur, we too have our own “tables” with spots to fill. Those very important seats determine our circle of influence and for this reason should be very carefully & thoughtfully given. These are the people that are going to lead us in the right direction that we're destined to travel. They should also be the ones that aren't afraid to call us out on our bullsh*t and lift us up out of the valley, when we can't see the light at the top of the mountain. It's not just about filling the seats with bodies and for this reason, not everyone we know should or will make the cut. It's about really knowing the people around us honestly & intimately enough, that we can see their strengths, their genius and their value. We understand and appreciate them, but even more so we love them & we trust them. So when choosing our 12 - we really only want the perfect fit to sit down. Once determined who the seats belong to and what they're “bringing to the table”, we extend to them a personal invitation that they get to claim or deny. If they accept, their name “gets engraved” on that seat. Who are you inviting to your table? KK's Key Takeaways Who Was Chosen To Sit At The Table? Sometimes in our lives, we carry this fear that we'll never live up to the vision that we hold for ourselves in our heads or our hearts. As much as we'd love to be that person we envision inside, the fear of being judged or called out as a “fraud” by other people - can be so great - that it holds us back from going after our dreams. The truth is, it can be wicked hard for people who knew or know us in our everyday ordinary life, whether they be the people we either grew up with, our siblings, our parents or our past teachers, whoever it is, to see our “extraordinary” in their everyday plain, old ordinary box that they try to put or keep us in. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about “Imposter Syndrome” and how the paralyzing fear it brings has been strong enough to make many writers, entrepreneurs, artists and creatives from all walks of life all stop dead in their tracks. No one wants to be seen as a fraud, phony, fake or poser but it helps to understand that that fear is only alive and well in our heads ---> because we choose to believe it. We give away our power to the ego and to others AND we can take that sh*t back! HA! This episode is an encouragement to not let the self-imposed limitations of your ego and the inability of other people to “see” what's right in front of them - keep you from following your dream! We must not let the doubt of our accomplishments stop us from fulfilling Our Divine Assignment. Never forget who you really are & to whom you belong. Have you ever tried to make progress in some area of your life? Maybe you wanted to break an old habit, or move ahead in your work or craft, get better at a specific skill or just simply improve your ability to sit your ass down & get quiet for meditation practice. Ha! As a spiritual mentor, I talk to a lot of people who are trying to transform something in some way. Many times, I find that they're stuck in what we call the “victim loop” of their stories. As humans, one thing that I know to be true is that “repetition is the mother of all learning” in both helpful and harmful ways. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about what it takes to make significant improvement or lasting change in our lives. Whether that be something we want to learn, a life situation we want to change, that extra weight we want to lose or a relationship we want to build; they all take consistent effort. We have to stop expecting consistent good results from half-ass inconsistent efforts. Ha! If we truly want to change, it's time to do the daily work so we can see the results we desire. KK's Key Takeaways Victim Loop (6:30) People Don't Really Want To Change (12:54) Only When You Feel Good (21:05) Making The Time And Space (25:11) Karen Kenney is a writer, speaker, spiritual teacher, host of The Karen Kenney Show Podcast, founder of Fearless Flow™ Mentoring & creator of THE NEST Spiritual Membership. There's an old saying from the 1700's, originally credited to writer Christopher Bullock that says, “Tis impossible to be sure of anything but Death & Taxes.” Ha! And I think an argument could still be made that there are plenty of folks that don't pay their taxes, but one thing for sure, is that none of us are escaping a physical death. So after the recent loss of a beloved friend, I got to thinking once again about how if today were to be my last, would my daily actions be a symbol of how I would want to be remembered? Here's the thing, we never know when the last exhale is coming. Not for us or for the people, pets and places we love and care about. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're taking a look at how things might be if we knew when to expect our last moment here on this earth. How would that knowledge affect our actions & our reactions? If your life were to be remembered by your final thoughts, words, behaviors & choices…. How would we want our last day to go? Just because we don't know when to expect the very end, for ourselves and others, doesn't mean that we can't live consciously as though we were dying. I mean this in a positive love-based way and not a fearful way. So, if we have that chance to say, “I love you” or “I'm sorry”, please take it. If we have the opportunity to extend some grace, mercy & forgiveness toward someone in our lives (including ourselves), or to live in thankfulness & gratitude for what we have, I hope we'll all enthusiastically take it. May we be courageous enough to take it every day, because the truth is we don't know when it will be The Last Breath. Something that the Author, Filmmaker & Bishop TD Jakes once said that has never left me, was his concept about being a voluminous “10-Gallon People”. I first heard him speak to this at an Oprah Event back in like 2013 & he was laying it down how sometimes we are 10-Gallon people living in a pint-sized world. Ha! And let's say if you are a 10-Gallon Love kind of person that was born into a Pint Size Capacity Family - no matter how hard they/we try, it might feel as if our cups will never be full. This isn't to say that the “pint-sized people” in our lives aren't doing their very best to fill us up. It's just simply that even if they were to sincerely give everything they have - it will never seem like it's enough. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're taking a look at what it means to be a 10-Gallon person and how that translates into the way we feel in our every day relationships and lives. If you're a 10-Gallon kind of Peacock and you choose to surround yourself with pint-sized people you will always be left feeling like something is missing. If you don't explore or understand this - it can lead to feelings of resentment or grievances against others. It helps to realize that the common denominator lies with us and our 10-Gallon capacity. Ha! Rather than getting upset because of what we're missing, we need to look at where we can adjust the balance of who we have in our lives. As well as commit to maybe pouring into our pint-sized counterparts with some of the overflow from our 10-Gallon People hearts! There are two main types of regret that people encounter in their lifetime; one stems from decisions made or actions taken that we're not proud of and the other has us living in the past focused on some kind of action that we didn't take or do. Either way, if we focus on regret, we can get stuck in a loop of self-loathing - that has us externally lashing out at others or internally turning on ourselves because we feel like we missed out on something better due to our inaction or bad decisions. The reality is, many times we can't always go back to the original offense, mistake, trespass or moment of clumsiness and change our decisions or fix where we went wrong. Instead we have to look at those moments as a learning opportunity in our lives, one where we can now reflect on the decisions made and gain knowledge in how we can do better next time. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're looking at regrets, taking them up out of the basement and into the light (of the front yard) where we can see them, own them, feel our way through them and finally begin to make our way up out of the muck and begin our healing. From here on out ... we can do it differently… we can do it better … and we can now choose “peace instead of this” and use our new awareness and commitment to transform our story into our glory. This week is the series finale of Meditation Tuesday and I’m so happy to welcome Jennifer Merrett to the show. Jen will be leading us through a beautiful Magnified Healing meditation. Magnified Healing is an energy healing modality that I integrate into my sessions, and I also teach Phase One. It is a wonderful high dimensional healing technique that brings us beautifully into our hearts, connected to our higher-self feeling whole and at peace. It helps us to clear any lower energy, brings in the ‘higher light’, helping us to connect with our higher selves, our purpose, the universe, and the earth. The training is beneficial to healers and beginners alike. No previous experience in healing is required, just a desire to broaden your perspective, connect with your higher self and to build and share your light. One of the things I love about it is that where ever you are at on your journey, the energy of the technique meets you where you are and takes you to the next level, daily! This suits beginners and spiritual seekers alike. Jen is a life long student of alternative medicine. She offers a holistic experience having studied numerous modalities, in massage therapy, energy healing, yoga, and belief and emotional transformation therapies. Her studies include Massage Therapy at the Institute of Essential Integration and The National Academy of Massage Therapy and Healing Sciences. Yoga at Yandara Yoga Institute. Hypnosis with Sharon Muir. Emotional Freedom Technique at Seeds for Change Wellness Center, Ayurveda Life Counseling at Yoga in Main. Additional training in: Thai Yoga Massage, Myofacial Release with John Barnes, Reiki, Theta Healing, and the Alba Method. How you are reacting and responding to the things going on in your life & the world right now? As a human being, trying to navigate your way through it all - inevitably you're going to have specific situations, certain someone's, and shocking scenarios that sneak up and push your button… and BAM! All of a sudden you find yourself feeling hurt, angry, scared, sad, confused, alone, etc. It can often leave us wondering, “What the actual heck? Why am I reacting or sometimes overreacting to this person, place, problem or post?” When a current day happening stirs up unresolved things, when the ego-mind trolls through your past history and dredges up old stories and unhealed traumas, and you find yourself feeling “triggered” - one of the most powerful questions you can ask yourself is, “How old am I right now?” In those moments when we feel “set off” by our surroundings or circumstances, it's wicked important to understand that those strong emotions are not coming from a “bad” place or because we're a “bad” person. But rather, they're emanating from a deep wound that's been bypassed, neglected, or perhaps never fully treated. It's coming up out of the dark and into the light because it's in need of healing. A healing that can only be found in our willingness to take a fearless moral inventory, stand in our own discomfort and surrender all of the hurtful thoughts and emotions into the arms of Love and Divine understanding. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're looking at where our true emotions and feelings are arising from and what we can do to heal those old hurts and traumas, so that we can show up wholly and completely as who we're called to be. In order to face our fears and make lasting change for the better, when you feel your not-so-soothing reactions come up - stop, go within and ask yourself, “How Old Are You?” KK's Key Takeaways: Flip The Script (2:33) Unhealed Trauma - Unhealed Wounds (6:31) How Old Are You Right Now? 050: Grow Your Yoga Base [Part 2] with Shannon Crow Welcome to episode 50! The Connected Yoga Teacher podcast and Facebook group has been brought to life by all of your support for one another, your humour and spirited discussions. Thank you for all for your participation and feedback as it has provided much inspiration and momentum. Thanks also to Rob, Laura and Samantha of The Connected Yoga Teacher team for so much of the work that goes into getting every episode to you. As a gift to you, our listeners, a 50 episode summary has been compiled. It's filled with key takeaways and actionable step for each episode. Keep an eye out for it in your inbox and if you are not subscribed to The Connected Yoga Teacher newsletter click here to sign up. In Part 2 of Grow Your Yoga Student Base, Shannon continues to share steps to help you attract more yoga students. No need to tackle them all at once, simply do one thing and when you hit a comfort zone move on to another action item. Areas explored include connecting with students in and out of class, offering gifts and discounts and being authentic; because as Shannon says, you've got this! You have everything within yourself to attract the students who will benefit from your unique services. 12:30 Recap of Part 1 of Grow Your Yoga Base 14:20 7) Connect with students a) In class 17:25 ACTION ITEM: If possible place yourself at the exit and the entrance to greet and say goodbye 18:20 7) Connect with students b) Outside of class 23:20 ACTION ITEM: Get a list of your students and their contact information- their phone number, email and maybe even a mailing address 24:35 8) Posters and Business Cards Keep posters with you and ready to pass out or put up. It's handy to have a poster travel kit with you that includes a variety of ways to hang your posters such as tape and tacks. Consider getting business cards to hand out or other creative way to pass on your information such as brochures and bookmarks. ACTION ITEM: Create a poster or business card to have ready to pass out or hang up. 28:25 9) Get to know people's preferences/check in When you have a smaller class it's a great opportunity to take the time to check in asking them what poses they enjoy and what parts of their bodies need some extra attention. You can incorporate the poses into your future classes each week. ACTION ITEM: Choose 1 check in method and try it out in your next class 30:55 10) Offer the same thing every week. Offer something different every week. It sounds contradictory but including the same poses can help students feel comfortable and internalize the poses and learn about these poses in relation to their bodies. The opposite has its own benefit- adding a new thing will keep the students feeling challenged and increase their knowledge base. “The opposite of a great truth is also true” –Gretchen Rubin 32:25 ACTION ITEM: If you generally do the same thing, add something new or tweak a commonly used pose. If you often vary your classes quite a bit try the same flow each week in a session. 33:10 11) Gifts, treats, offers and discounts Some examples of gifts and treats: quote on a paper, a yummy treat (could be healthy or semi-healthy like organic chocolate or ginger chews, maybe even something homemade), pose cards, candles, something that works with the holidays such as an ornament a Christmas or chocolate on Valentine's Day. Some examples of offers and discounts: bring a friend for free, 5-class pass donation for a charity auction, punch card (with 10 stamps students earning them a free class), partnering with a local business or event (such as a free smoothie at a local eatery when you take a class). 34:30 ACTION ITEM: Bring a treat to your next class which may work with your theme. 34:35 12) Assists While some people love touch while others feel uncomfortable. If you or your students aren't comfortable with touch, there are other ways to assist. Savasana can be a great place to start. A couple of ways to ensure your student is comfortable with touch is by using consent cards or by classes that include assists as a main focus. The Connected Yoga Teacher podcast episodes to check out on this topic: 036: Thai Yoga Massage with Shai Plonski 004: Assisting Students Without Touch 015: Consent Cards and Hands-On Assists with Molly Kitchen 36:00 ACTION ITEM: Learn one assist and practice it on another yoga teacher, your partner, friend or family member. 36:35 13) Strengthen your own yoga practice Be the student. Attend other class to gain inspiration and nurture your own yoga practice. Attending workshops and trainings so you can continue to learn and grow as a yoga teacher. TCYT podcast episodes to check out on this topic: 001: How to Avoid Yoga Teacher Burnout with Erin Aquin 002: How to Reconnect With Your Yoga Practice with Nina Andic ACTION ITEM: Set a time and place to practice yoga. 41:00 14) Be authentic Teaching what you know and be who you are. Don't try to be like another teacher. You are unique and no one else can share yoga like you can. ACTION ITEM: Pick 5-10 yoga poses to strengthen your cues and unique voice. You can record yourself on your phone or jot down some notes to help you determine whether your using cues that make sense to you and your own personal experience in yoga. 42:25 15) Use a theme There are so many ideas out there for themes and the sky's the limit! You can subscribe to the Yoga Teacher Central newsletters as it has relevant theme ideas each week. A few examples are: anatomy focus, 8-limbs, chakras, elements, summer solstice, full moon. ACTION ITEM: Look at your calendar and see what's coming up for you, sit in meditation or draw a card and see what pops up for you- it might be one word or setting an intention 43:40 16) Create an amazing class You've got this, you're already an amazing teacher! When you speak in your authentic voice and you define your yoga niche and plan something new or fun along with the consistent yoga offerings you are doing fine. Trust that the right students are coming to you at the right time. ACTION ITEM: You are right on track and are now armed with 15 things to help you keep going. Shannon is very excited to have her friend Shai Plonski on the podcast who also happens to be her very first Thai Yoga Massage teacher. Shannon and Shai know from experience that Thai Massage can enhance a yoga teacher's offerings in a multitude of ways such as building a stronger bond with their students, strengthening their hands-on assists, and providing new workshop and revenue opportunities. Nowadays Shai is the best-selling author of Compassionate Touch: Giving Massage for Optimal Health, Thriving Relationships & Spiritual Awakening. But back in 2001, Shai came to realize that he was not content to work behind a desk and felt a calling to do something more meaningful, connected to Spirit, and with his hands. Working for a carnival for the summer to earn money for university had Shai working at a booth making wax molds of people's hands. He has carried the feeling of this experience with him, having found the connection and trust he had to establish within seconds profound. The power of touch has been a major theme in Shai's life ever since. Another seed was planted when Shai travelled to Asia. He was intrigued by the practice and was eventually exposed to Thai Massage when volunteering at the Omega Institute. A teacher invited him to sit in on her class and he saw that the practice blended so many principles that mattered to him like connection, compassion, yoga, and the healing power of touch. Shai's passion for sharing the practice with others over the past 15 years has led him to teach at some of the largest yoga centers in Toronto and around the world including upcoming courses at the Kripalu Center and 1440 Multiversity. He has also authored or co-authored 15 manuals and books on the practice of Thai massage, trained over 3300 practitioners and 100 teachers in this healing art and is the founder of the Still Light Centre. Podcast Links: Shannon's Website The Connected Yoga Teacher Facebook Group Art of Assists 50-hour Yoga Teacher Training with Shannon Assisting Yoga Students Without Touch A great hands-on assist can make all the difference to a yoga student. It can be a communication tool for the kinaesthetic learners, it can give a relaxation to held tension and it can help students to have more awareness of their proprioception and alignment. But what if we want to assist without touch? Some people don't want to be touched, for various reasons. For example if a student is home with a baby attached to her all day, hands-on touch might be the last thing she wants. Another student may feel that touch is distracting. Beginner students may feel strange about being in a new class. Sometimes students are ticklish or they just don't know the teacher well enough to feel comfortable with an assist. These are all great reasons to use consent cards, so that students can decide. There are also times when students would love to receive touch, but the teacher is not up for giving hands-on assists. For example a teacher can be feeling out of balance and low in energy due to illness or a full schedule. Sometimes a teacher is so busy watching the safety of an advanced pose that they don't have time to assist, or they are leading a quick flow class that has everyone moving so fast they find it hard to connect. Just like every yoga class we take is unique, every instructor has unique teaching experiences too. _____________________________________________ Other Reasons for Assisting Without Touch: Student feels resistant or uncomfortable Tension increases during assist, instead of student “sinking into a pose” Student indicates not wanting assists Any pain or discomfort for student or teacher New yoga student who is already sensitive about being new Teacher's attention is needed for the entire class Student or teacher feeling rushed, tense, or out of breath Recipient of assist moves out of a pose quickly Student had a previous assist that caused injury or discomfort Recent or triggered trauma When our intuition or our instincts tell us to assist without touch we still want our students to feel attended to. I have come up with a list of how I assist without touch. Feel free to add your points in the comments below. _____________________________________________ Assisting Yoga Students Without Touch 1. Breath Our audible breath offers an assist. Students hear teachers breathing and mimic us. When our breath is calm and lengthened, our students will feel the intention we are giving as we walk around the room. 2. Props Blocks, bolsters, and straps are the props we typically turn to. Don't forget the wall, chairs, cushions, blankets, balls, sandbags, and sometimes other students. These objects provide a type of feedback to the body. Partnering is especially helpful when we know our students, as some new yogis find partnering adds stress to the class experience. Partner yoga poses can give the benefits of hands-on assists in a situation where students are open to touch, but the instructor doesn't have enough time to get to everyone. 3. Demo We show yoga poses all the time, and this is a type of assist. We can show the entire class a pose at the front of the room or we can quietly move next to a student who looks puzzled and show the pose to bring clarity and understanding. 4. Verbal Cues The words that we use when describing a pose, or a feeling that we would like to convey in the pose can be very powerful. For example, in relaxation pose: “Relax your entire body, imagine you are on a warm beach and the sand is contouring to your body and giving you all the support you need”. 5. Self-Directed Assists Hands-on assists that students can do for/to their own body in a pose. I've incorporated this into yoga from my Thai Yoga Massage trainings. We try out certain massage techniques on ourselves, so I started incorporating a similar approach into postural assists. It can be as simple as asking students to massage their hamstring muscles before a seated forward fold. “Touching ourselves” can bring up an awkward feeling for some students, but it's a wonderful way to encourage people out of their comfort zone, taking one more little action step toward self-love. Every yoga style approaches hands-on assists uniquely. No matter what the style, hands-on assists are intimate, so they can cause discomfort or bring up a lack of confidence for both new and experienced students or teachers. Whether offered with or without touch, assisting is an art form that all yoga teachers can learn with practice. _____________________________________________ What Is a Yoga Assist? A Yoga Assist Offers: Help to the student Enhancement Understanding Alignment awareness Relaxation Proprioception Increased confidence Safety within postures Deepening Muscle memory Attention of teacher Another form of communication Nurturing Support Hands-on assists are something that I now love to receive and give. I feel it is an art form and I am continuing to learn as I go. My intention behind why I am offering a yoga assist is key. A quick check to see if an assist will offer enhancement or understanding of a posture at a deeper level will help you to assist your students at a new level. _____________________________________________ To me — A Yoga Assist Is Not: – An adjustment – Correcting – Fixing – Altering Often I have heard assists referred to as “adjustments” and for me this word sounds like there is something that needs to be fixed or altered. It sounds really technical, almost like a teacher would adjust a student to correct them or show them how a pose “should be done.” My belief is that a yoga assist is not intended to adjust, correct or fix a student or pose. Don't feel bad if you have called an assist an adjustment. I have. I try to say assist and I focus on what my intention is as I move in to assist a student.

Recht ausführliche Hörsendung über Thai Massage, auch Thai Yoga Massage bzw. Nuad genannt.
