How would you react in the midst of a crisis? This week on The Unbeatable Mind, comedian, Crossfit affiliate owner, and leader of the successful men's group ‘ The Treehouse', Kenny Kane, shares his personal tale of losing his home to the recent fires in Los Angeles. Kenny recounts the harrowing moments of urgency as he and his family confronted the blaze, and the profound impact it had on their lives.    Delving deep into themes of leadership, community, and the essence of human connection, Kenny details the importance of having a clear vision and purpose, especially when faced with volatile and uncertain situations. Kenny explains his commitment to nurturing resilient leaders through his men's group and the gym community, emphasizing physical training as a conduit for life preparation.  Key Takeaways: Kenny Kane's Crisis Management: Listen to Kenny's story of losing his home in the Palisades fires—and how his previous experiences and personal philosophy helped him and his family manage.  OODA Loop Framework: Hear Kenny talk about the OODA loop (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act), and how he applied it during the fire.  Physical Preparedness: Discover the importance of physical and mental preparedness for unforeseen events and learn how he applies his physical training during times of crisis.  Purpose Driven Leadership: Learn how in times of uncertainty, having a clear vision can anchor actions and decisions.    Kenny Kane holds multiple certifications and is a graduate of SealFit's Kokoro Camp. Kenny has implemented his mind-body training protocol whilst coaching Olympians, NBA players, Premiere League soccer players, A-list celebrities, CrossFit Games athletes, and nine-to- fivers alike. He has also developed and directed several fitness programs for kids, coached an adaptive athlete to compete alongside able-bodied competitors, and continues to contribute to broader philosophical discussions concerning public health in podcasts and other forums with elite athletes, movement and human bioenergetics specialists, and thought leaders from around the world. Has your memory of things past and the negativity that stuck with it failed you? Does it seem like nothing is making traction, and you are all the more stuck where you are? You may be allowing past failures to define you, and it has limited you to a certain extent to discourage you from taking the next step to reach your goal. Have you taken a look at what you do to yourself when things don't go well midstream when reaching for those goals?  How do you make yourself be pulled towards your vision and goal consistently? Andy Petranek is a professional life, leadership, and performance coach who's been helping people create greater levels of confidence, joy, fulfillment, and success in their lives for over 25 years.  He is a veteran of multiple overseas deployments, including Operation Desert Storm, Andy is a former United States Marine who served for four years as a combat engineer and small unit commander. Also, he is a Red Bull sponsored athlete in the sport of adventure racing, he captained teams and navigated courses all over the world in races like the Eco-Challenge and Raid Gauloises; in 2009 he became the oldest competitor to qualify for and compete in the CrossFit Games He was an early adopter of CrossFit starting one of the first and most successful affiliate gyms in the world in 2004, CrossFit Los Angeles.  He launched a successful consulting business and taught hundreds of other CrossFit Affiliate gym owners his gym management success strategies and systems. He also co-founded the Whole Life Challenge, a global, online health and wellness game that has had over 200,000 people participate over its 9-year history. He holds a master's degree in spiritual psychology. He has been the beneficiary of decades of personal self-exploration, discovery, and expansion through his work with coaches, healers, guides, and teachers. In this episode, Andy shares how to live your life free from your very own critic, forgiving and loving yourself, becoming more self-aware of who you are so you move past whatever is hindering you from getting success. He also talks about starting from a clean slate free from your judgments of the past, so you reach your highest potential and serve your client better on a deeper level. He doubles down the importance of the language you use as words have a substantial impact on projecting how things should happen. And it's best to avoid words that create pressure and anxiety. Make things free-flowing, making them become just a way of life. "If you could just separate from all the stuff that has gotten in your way -- the belief systems, the structures, the cultural ways of being you've learned from your family, from your community, from your friends, and step into the version of you that you want to step into, based on what you want to create as a possibility, that's powerful. Because you're operating from a blank slate." - Andy Petranek What you will learn from this episode: 03:15 - His takeaways from his Marine Corp stint 10:15 - Stepping into a new operating system without fully taking out one's uniqueness 13:46 - How it's important to create a vision of how you want to be and seeing it demonstrated in real life 16:10 - Allowing yourself the flexibility to change gears midstream 18:18 - What do you do to yourself when you don't hit the goal? 21:37 - The full acceptance of yourself not worrying about whether you falter or not 26:16 - Self-acceptance as a ticket to personal freedom 34:12 - What's with the words 'have to' and 'want to' 36:49 - The behavior of a 'have to' person 38:53 - Important thoughts on 'choices' 44:05 - How important is self-awareness in starting your journey to self-acceptance 46:20 - The goal is not to get rid of your weaknesses but to see it, accept, and to master it 49:46 - Connecting with your clients on a much deeper level 56:02 - What happens when you operate in guilt, shame, and scarcity Connect with Andy Petranek: andypetranek.com Facebook Instagram Connect with Gavin McHale: maverickcoachingacademy.ca LinkedIn Instagram

You may remember Jack Osbourne from the hit TV show The Osbournes. He’s the son of the heavy metal singer Ozzie Osbourne and is a regular member at CrossFit Los Angeles.   Jack has a thriving business producing travel and history shows alongside his dad (who’s a closet history buff). He’s also a husband and a father to two daughters.   But the reason I wanted to have him as a guest on the show was to talk about his experience with addiction and getting sober as a teenager, as well as his diagnosis with multiple sclerosis (MS).   Before the age of eighteen, Jack had become addicted to painkillers, recognized it, and then willingly went to rehab, kicking it without relapse — he’s now fourteen years sober and counting.   Not long after kicking painkillers, he got the sort of news that any human being who’s been to the doctor with strange symptoms dreads. He learned he has MS.   Jack didn’t tuck his tail under and run. Quite the opposite. He’s lives his life openly and honestly, sharing his trials and tribulations with the world in an effort to shed more light on this disease and to help others in need live with it.   Join me for this great conversation with Jack. Here are some of the things we speak about: The unexpected twists and turns of life as a teenager - and how he pulled through The adventure of a lifetime, climbing El Capitan - a 3,000 ft. sheer granite wall in Yosemite, CA How choosing adventures or events that inspire you can pull you toward your goals Getting “this chick” pregnant and getting married His first symptoms of MS - “de-nial” is not just a river in Africa His belief that, “Where you are at 30 is where you are with the rest of your life,” and how that helped him Commitment to 3 days/week of training - start of changing life Getting his “life straight” through the Whole Life Challenge Catching Leptospirosis in the jungles of Borneo The process of detoxing to cleanse his body Process goals vs. outcome goals The importance of community in fitness and training Andy’s discovery of CrossFit - the early days

He also gets a chance to hang out with these guys outside of competition. During the podcast, he shares both stories and profound learnings from the likes of Laird Hamilton, Gabby Reece, and Kelly Slater (who he hangs with regularly).   Though his life is glamorous, he struggles just like the rest of us with his personal health and fitness, challenged by the uniqueness of his schedule, lifestyle and habits. Kenny has been in the coaching game for as long as CrossFit has been around, and started CrossFit Los Angeles in 2004. He has worked with 1000s of athletes and now is most passionate about working on helping coaches get better at coaching.    Kenny shares with us the evolution of his coaching experience and dives into concepts such as how he sets up his programming at CFLA and how to plan out specific styles of training days, to some deeper ideas like "the difference between doing athletic things and being an athlete, and how to find purpose in your training.    Give this show a listen to hear our thoughts on the topic. Then I want hear what this means to you.    You might reach enlightenment, or just get a few laughs and some new knowledge at the least.   Maybe this will motivate you to choose something a little more specific, put a deadline on it, so it will get your @$$ in gear.   If you’re feeling bored with your current program, tired of training without purpose, and want to have a blast working toward a common goal with a bunch of other super motivated people, come join us and see what is possible.   This week, the doors open for the Muscle Gain Challenge. Alex, Jared and Matt Cipolla cover: —his journey in becoming a CrossFit coach—evolving under the exceptional tutelage of CrossFit LA, particularly, the one and only, Kenny Kane (http://www.kennykane.com) —what the Mastery Method is and why it gives coaches the necessary leverage to help their clients grow not just physically but psychologically as well —his most recent, favorite coaching memory —coaching silliness —what it means to practice what you preach If you happened to hear Kenny Kane on Barbell Shrugged (http://daily.barbellshrugged.com/programming-for-crossfit-classes-w-kenny-kane-of-crossfit-la/) back in May of 2015 talking about the importance of context when programming and coaching CrossFit classes or just fitness in general, then this episode is NOT TO BE MISSED.
