In this foundational solocast, Vanessa breaks down the basics of protein nutrition and explains why protein is essential for fat loss, body recomposition, metabolic health, and preserving lean muscle. Check out the Protein-Sparing Modified Fasting Library at ketogenicgirl.com and use code VANESSA for 20% off. You'll learn how dietary protein is broken down into amino acids, why essential amino acids must come from food, and how leucine helps trigger muscle protein synthesis. Vanessa also explains protein turnover, the balance between muscle protein breakdown and rebuilding, and why protein needs may increase during dieting, aging, illness, surgery, and other forms of physiological stress. The episode also explores why water fasting can result in the loss of both fat and lean mass, while protein-sparing modified fasting provides the amino acids needed to better protect muscle during a calorie deficit. Most of us treat fat loss as a subtraction problem. Eat less, move more, lose weight.Energy balance (calories in calories out) is definitely real, so that holds at the top level when it comes to pure weight loss. The trouble is that "eat less" is often done restrictively, often leads to even LESS protein, nutrient, and fiber intake, and often done at a rapid pace, any of which cause you to lose muscle, energy, get hungrier, and all the other things that ultimately make you quit (or gain he weight back). This episode goes deeper than calories to the power of... protein! Protein does not behave like the rest of your calories. It costs more to digest, though that effect is smaller than people claim. It is also the most filling thing you can eat, and I get into a study where people dropped hundreds of calories a day on their own, without being told to, just from eating more of it. That is the real lever, and why eating more can make you leaner even when you are not "trying" to push an aggressive calorie deficit. Then there is the claim that you can eat unlimited extra protein and still lose weight and body fat, so we'll examine that nutrient partitioniong claim. I also discuss daily protein targets, what to do if you're already leaner, and a 30-second way to think about the scale that explains how your body can change while the number stays flat.Try my favorite custom protein! This conversation is for you if you're struggling with weight loss in midlife. Our most popular episode ever featured Dr. Stacy Sims today we're talking to one of her fitness and nutrition collaborators.Hailey Babcock is a fitness and nutrition coach whose programs are built in collaboration with Dr. Stacy Sims and Dr. Vonda Wright, two of the leading experts in women's exercise science. In this episode, we cover the most effective ways to lose fat and gain muscle in midlife. You'll learn:How Hailey and Dr. Stacy Sims built fitness programs for midlife women looking to lose fat and gain muscleWhy you need to lift heavy and how to do it safelyWhat kind of cardio is actually best for fat lossThe role of HIIT and SIT training, and why recovery matters just as much as the workoutHow much muscle you can realistically expect to gainWhy stressful seasons of life (divorce, caring for aging parents, stressful teens) are not the time to chase weight lossWhy a structured training program beats random YouTube workoutsWhat to focus on if you have zero time to work out (stairs over elevators, walking after meals, more movement throughout your day)The real role of nutrition in fat lossWhy strength training is non-negotiable if you're trying to lose weightConnect with Hailey Babcock:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/haileyhappensfitness/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/haileyhappensfitness/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@haileyhappensfitnessYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@haileyhappensfitnessWebsite: https://www.haileyhappensfitness.com/Thank you for listening! In this Bitesize episode, we revisit a key conversation on why resistance training and fat loss need to be treated as two separate goals — and why blending them usually backfires. This short-form cut pulls together the core science on training for muscle/strength versus training for calorie burn, why "lifting to near failure" matters more than the weight on the bar, and a practical progression toward an unassisted pull-up. It also revisits the protein research: why menopausal women are commonly deficient, and how simply increasing protein intake can drive meaningful fat loss and lean mass gains — no calorie-cutting required. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why lifting heavy, moderate, or light doesn't matter for muscle growth — but matters enormously for building strength How to structure your resistance training if your goal is to build or maintain muscle versus increase strength Why treating your lifting sessions as a "calorie-burning workout" can undermine both your strength and muscle-building results A practical progression (band-assisted reps, then eccentric lowering) for working toward an unassisted pull-up Why menopausal-aged women are commonly deficient in protein, and what happens when protein intake alone is increased The optimal protein target (1.6g/kg or ~0.75g/lb of body weight per day) for maximizing lean mass and fat loss Where protein intake starts to hit diminishing returns KEY TAKEAWAYS Separate Your Training Goals: Muscle growth responds to sets taken near failure regardless of load; strength gains require heavier weights. Combining strength/muscle work with calorie-burning goals in the same session tends to produce lower-quality training on both fronts. Progression Over Perfection for Pull-Ups: Band-assisted reps followed by slow eccentric (lowering) practice is an effective, movement-specific path to an unassisted pull-up — though the strength requires ongoing maintenance to keep. Protein Is an Underused Lever: Many menopausal-aged women fall well below optimal protein intake (studies cite averages around 70g/day). Increasing protein alone — without cutting calories — has been shown to reduce body fat and increase lean mass. Diminishing Returns Above ~0.75g/lb: Protein benefits continue to accrue above the optimal threshold but with steadily smaller returns, so hitting "close enough" still delivers most of the benefit. BEST MOMENTS "Lifting heavy or light really doesn't matter if you're trying to build muscle... it does matter if you're trying to increase strength." "As soon as we start looking at our lifting programs as a way to burn more calories... that's when we start to say, 'I'm going to lift for two hours.' And those sets usually tend not to be very high quality." "The act of increasing protein resulted in a significant gain of lean mass and a significant loss of body fat." What's the healthiest way to lose weight and keep it off without counting calories? On paper, it sounds simple. Will carb cycling actually help you lose fat faster? In today's episode, I'm answering a question from a listener named Haley, who's down to her last few pounds and wondering whether carb cycling could help accelerate fat loss and body recomposition. When you've already built solid habits and feel like you're doing everything right, it's natural to wonder if a more advanced nutrition strategy could help you see results faster. In this episode, I break down what carb cycling is, whether the research supports it as a fat loss tool, and how carbohydrate timing can affect workouts, recovery, and body composition. We'll discuss when carb cycling may be beneficial, why it's often misunderstood, and the biggest mistake women make when assuming a more complicated nutrition approach will automatically lead to better results. Tune in to learn whether carb cycling is worth considering, or whether your efforts are better spent focusing on the fundamentals that drive long-term success. I resisted every single one of these for way too long. These are the 10 hard doses of reality I had to face to get leaner and stronger, protect my metabolic health, and actually feel my best while looking my most fabulous.Body recomp is real, but it's slower and more nuanced than "calories in vs calories out." It means losing fat while building muscle (or building muscle while losing fat), and that takes a primary focus, smart phases, and a willingness to let go of the diet mentality, the scale obsession, and the idea that recovery is weakness.Watch to the end for a bonus 11th truth that ties it all together.Tell me in the comments: which one hit you the hardest? Body recomposition — the process of building muscle and losing fat at the same time — is one of the most contested and most misunderstood concepts in physique development. The conventional view is that recomp is reserved for two specific groups — beginners and individuals with excess body fat. And while those populations do see the most dramatic outcomes, that framing leaves out several other groups who can absolutely still recomp under the right conditions. On this week's episode of the CHASING CLARITY HEALTH & FITNESS PODCAST, I'm joined by Jeff Hoehn for Episode 5 of our monthly collaboration where we break down topics that bridge evidence-based research with real-world coaching application. In this conversation, we go deep on what body recomposition actually is, the three different forms it can take, and the five populations of individuals who can realistically expect to recomp when their training and nutrition are properly structured.HERE'S WHAT WE COVER:WHAT BODY RECOMPOSITION REALLY MEANS & WHY THE SCALE OFTEN MISLEADS YOU THE 3 FORMS OF BODY RECOMP & THE PHASES WHERE EACH ONE SHOWS UP FAT LOSS FOCUSED RECOMP, BUILDING FOCUSED RECOMP & SIMULTANEOUS FAT LOSS WITH MUSCLE GAIN WHY NEWBIES & INDIVIDUALS WITH EXCESS BODY FAT SEE THE MOST DRAMATIC RECOMP OUTCOMES THE MUSCLE MEMORY ADVANTAGE FOR DETRAINED INDIVIDUALS RETURNING TO TRAININGWHY TRAINED LIFTERS CAN STILL RECOMP & THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TRAINING AGE & TRAINING ADVANCEMENT THE LATEST RESEARCH FROM VARGAS-MOLINA ET AL. Welcome back to our Summer Fat Loss Series, where I'm helping you get into the best shape this summer without giving up your social life or favorite foods. The final episode of this series is all about what you should actually be eating to lose fat and tone up. There's so much nutrition advice online telling women to focus on specific foods, supplements, hacks, and trends. In this episode the guys break down the muscle paradox! Why people are losing muscle while trying to lose fat, why this crisis is being amplified by GLP-1 use, and the three things that cause it: inadequate protein, poor resistance training programming, and a cardio focus. They also get into the testosterone U-shape curve and how more isn't always better for libido, Sal's upcoming talk at the World Peptide Congress in Arizona, Adam's sauna routine and how it kept him from getting the norovirus that took down his whole family, the shriek bird that impales its prey on thorns, and polar bear fun facts nobody asked for. Then they answer questions submitted through Instagram, covering how to add cardio after years of strength training, what's actually happening in your body when you under-eat but still get stronger, physical standards for men and women in their late 30s and early 40s, and how to approach warm-up sets. Struggling to lose fat and actually keep it off? It's not a magic macro ratio or the perfect workout plan that gets you lasting results...it's finding the weird variations of habits that fit who YOU are. In this episode, I'm breaking down the 7 weird habits and mindset shifts that helped me lose fat, build lean muscle, and maintain my body recomposition results long term. You'll learn why I said "eff it" to clean eating and started planning dessert FIRST, how 3-week workout progressions helped me build muscle without burning out, why telling myself I'd "track macros forever" actually made tracking easier, and how planning meals out at restaurants kept me consistent during fat loss without feeling like "that person on a diet." Plus, I share why doing the minimums BEFORE you need them is the secret to staying consistent through the holidays, busy seasons, and life changes — and the one bonus mindset shift that prepares you for anything that could derail your progress.Whether your goal is fat loss, building muscle, or full body recomp, these sustainable habits will help you stop the all-or-nothing dieting cycle, find food freedom, and create results that actually last.

If you've been trying to lose weight for months—or maybe even years—your first instinct is probably this: "I need to eat less." Less calories. Less carbs. Less treats. Less food overall. After all, that's what we've been told, right? If weight loss is the goal, then eating less must be the answer. And while it's true that a calorie deficit is necessary for fat loss, many women have taken that message to an unhealthy extreme. They're constantly dieting. Skipping meals. Trying to survive on the lowest calories possible. Starting over every Monday with a brand-new plan and a fresh wave of motivation. Yet somehow, despite all that effort, the scale barely moves. Or maybe it drops for a little while, only to come right back. And then the frustration sets in. Because you're doing everything you think you're supposed to do, but by the end of the week you're exhausted, hungry, craving everything in sight, and the weekends completely unravel all the progress you tried so hard to make. So today, we're talking about a truth that many women desperately need to hear: Sometimes the reason you're struggling to lose fat isn't because you're eating too much. It's because you've been eating too little for too long. Now, that doesn't mean calories don't matter. And it certainly isn't permission to eat whatever you want whenever you want. But it is permission to stop believing that less is always better. Because sustainable fat loss requires more than simply eating as little as possible. Your body needs nourishment. It needs consistency. It needs enough fuel to support your metabolism, your energy, your workouts, and your overall health. When you're constantly underfed, it's often harder—not easier—to create the consistency that leads to lasting results. So if you've been stuck in the cycle of restriction, overeating, guilt, and starting over, this episode is for you. And if you're ready for personalized guidance on how to fuel your body well while still working toward your weight-loss goals, I'd love to help. You can email me at TaraJ@dietditching.com, and we can talk about what that looks like for you. And don't forget to join our Facebook community, Lose Weight, Live Free, where you'll find support, encouragement, and women who are learning how to pursue health without living on another diet. I'm so glad you're here. Thanks for listening.
Most people think fat loss is just about eating less. And while your diet determines whether or not you lose weight, your training determines what that weight loss actually looks like from a physique standpoint. Are you losing body fat while maintaining muscle and building a leaner, stronger, more defined physique?Or are you just becoming a smaller, scrawnier version of yourself? That distinction comes down to how you train through the diet, and most dieters get it wrong. In Part 1 of this Fat Loss Series, I broke down the nutrition side of the fat loss process and how to create a calorie deficit without creating a nutrient deficit. In this episode, we shift into the training side and break down why resistance training is non-negotiable during a deficit, what it actually protects, how to structure it for muscle preservation, and the common training mistakes that derail dieters who feel like they're doing everything right.HERE'S WHAT WE COVER:WHY YOUR DIET DETERMINES WEIGHT LOSS BUT YOUR TRAINING DETERMINES YOUR PHYSIQUEWHY MUSCLE MASS IS THE FOUNDATION OF A BETTER LOOKING, BETTER PERFORMING PHYSIQUETHE METABOLIC, HORMONAL & APPETITE CONSEQUENCES OF LOSING MUSCLE DURING A DIETWHY HYPERPHAGIA & BODY FAT OVERSHOOTING DERAIL POST-DIET MAINTENANCETHE RESEARCH BACKING RESISTANCE TRAINING AS THE MOST EFFECTIVE FORM OF EXERCISE DURING A DEFICITPROGRESSIVE OVERLOAD AS THE FOUNDATION OF EFFECTIVE FAT LOSS TRAININGTHE DOUBLE PROGRESSION MODEL AND HOW TO USE IT IN A DEFICITHOW TO MANAGE TRAINING VOLUME, INTENSITY & EFFORT THROUGH A CUTTHE NUANCE OF PROGRESSION AND PERFORMANCE CHANGES AS YOU GET LEANERPROACTIVE VS REACTIVE PROGRAMMING DURING A FAT LOSS PHASETHE FOUR TRAINING MISTAKES THAT QUIETLY SABOTAGE FAT LOSS PHASESWHY TURNING LIFTING INTO CARDIO BACKFIRESTHE HIDDEN COST OF OVER-RELYING ON HIIT DURING A DEFICITWHY PROGRAM HOPPING REMOVES PROGRESSIVE OVERLOAD FROM THE EQUATIONTHE MINDSET SHIFT THAT SEPARATES DIETERS WHO PRESERVE MUSCLE FROM THOSE WHO DON'TIf you've ever finished a Fat Loss Phase feeling smaller but not better, or felt like your physique didn't look the way you expected after weeks of effort, this episode will give you the framework to approach your next cut the right way.WHERE TO CONNECT WITH ME:Follow Brandon on IG: https://www.instagram.com/brandondacruz_/For Info on Brandon's Coaching Services: https://form.jotform.com/bdacruzfitness/coachinginquiryEmail: Bdacruzfitness@gmail.comMy Reading Recommendations:THE MUSCLE & STRENGTH PYRAMIDShttps://getdpd.com/cart/hoplink/25469?referrer=1l54og96lf1ccw

Click the link for DATES, DETAILS, and FAQs! In this episode, Dr. Scott Watier and Tommy Welling dive deep into what they call the insulin matrix — the idea that chronic disease, weight loss resistance, and metabolic dysfunction are fundamentally insulin problems that develop quietly for years before showing up in labs or on the scale. Inspired by a conversation between Dr. Rhonda Patrick and Dr. Ben Bikman, the hosts explain why fasting is uniquely powerful not just for losing weight, but for changing how and where the body stores and releases energy at a cellular level — shrinking overfilled fat cells rather than simply creating a calorie deficit. They break down why a consistently high-insulin environment, even with good food choices, can keep the body locked in fat-storage mode and why stacking more daily "insulin-off hours" through foundational fasting is the most direct lever for restoring metabolic flexibility. The hosts also walk through the key lifestyle multipliers that either amplify or undermine the fasting effect — sleep, movement, food quality, and stress management — and why matching your fasting intensity to your current life load produces better long-term results than white-knuckling aggressive extended fasts. Listeners leave with a clear, trackable one-week action plan focused on morning energy, cravings, and fasting comfort as early signs that the insulin matrix is finally shifting in their favor. She educates on the science of exercise, specifically teaching women how to build muscle will less wear-and-tear on their bodies. Today on the show we discuss: why women don't need “women-specific” workouts to build muscle, why training near failure is the key to real results, how to structure your workouts for strength and body recomposition, why lifting heavy won't automatically make you bulky, how protein and a small calorie deficit support fat loss, and why consistency, self-talk, and body image matter just as much as the workout itself and much more. Click the link for DATES, DETAILS, and FAQs! In this timely and motivating episode, Dr. Scott Watier and Tommy Welling tackle one of the most common fasting lifestyle challenges — how to stay consistent through summer without falling into the all-or-nothing trap that quietly undoes months of hard-earned progress. Using the simple but powerful "keepy uppy" analogy, they reframe the goal from perfect execution to simply never letting your fasting habits go to zero, making consistency feel achievable even during the busiest, most unpredictable weeks of the year. The hosts walk through five practical categories — fasting windows, food choices, hydration, movement, and mindset — offering concrete summer-specific strategies like anchoring just one end of your eating window, using travel days to extend rather than abandon your fast, and letting the event be your meal at barbecues and pool parties. They also share a key mindset shift for navigating social situations with food, emphasizing the value of choosing one indulgence on purpose rather than grazing mindlessly and regretting it later. The episode closes with an encouraging challenge: pick two or three of today's strategies, apply them now before the summer slips away, and you'll look back in September knowing you stayed in the game the whole time rather than starting over again from scratch. What does a fat loss diet look like when you build it around satiety (fullness) instead of restriction or willpower? The answer is based on the biology of post-diet hunger, 5 satiety levers that decide how full you are after a meal, and the targets you can set at your next meal. Most fat loss attempts fall apart around week 5 or 6. The reason is rarely willpower. Hunger is a measurable physiological state that intensifies the longer and harder you diet, and most nutrition plans don't account for it.This episode covers a study on hunger hormones that stayed disrupted a full year after dieting, the five satiety levers, from how calorie-dense your food is to how fast you eat it, and a simple way to audit your own meals for fullness without counting every calorie. In this listener Q&A episode, Dr. Scott Watier and Tommy Welling tackle five real questions from the fasting community, delivering honest, practical answers that cut through the confusion and help listeners troubleshoot their fasting journey with confidence. They address acid reflux during fasting — explaining why it happens in the early stages and what simple dietary and timing adjustments can calm it down — and give a realistic, honest answer to the common question of how long it actually takes to see results with a consistent 16 to 20 hour fasting window. The hosts also break down the protein shake debate, explaining how to think about workout nutrition within a fasting lifestyle and why adjusting the eating window timing may be a smarter solution than breaking the fast early. A listener dealing with frequent bathroom trips learns why this is a normal and even positive early sign of metabolic adaptation, and how proper mineral-based hydration makes all the difference. The episode wraps with an in-depth response to a listener navigating a weight loss plateau after rapid progress — covering the body's natural hormonal adaptation process, the risks of extended fasting without proper refeed planning, and why shifting to an earlier eating window and prioritizing protein are the keys to getting momentum back. Most people think tracking their protein is enough. The science says what your body actually craves is something far more specific and the person making that argument spent 23 years inside legacy media watching the wellness industry sell women everything from "bikini body in two weeks" to canned protein soda. In this episode, I sit down with Liz Plosser, former Editor in Chief of Women's Health, where she oversaw brands reaching 44 million women. We break down why the nine essential amino acids are what your body is really after when you chase protein, why BCAAs are only a fraction of the picture, and why a study found four of the top six creatine gummies on Amazon contained zero creatine. Liz also opens up about her own supplement stack, her shift from endurance running to heavy lifting, and makes the case that testing instead of guessing is one of the most empowering moves you can make for your health. Then we go deep on the science most people get wrong: why aging women struggle to pull amino acids from food, how essential aminos protect lean muscle even on rest days and for those on GLP-1s, the new research on high-dose creatine for sleep deprivation and Alzheimer's, and why collagen may not deserve the hype. We also cover the menopause misinformation epidemic, the 2002 hormone study that terrified the world, and what Liz puts in her own morning protocol. This conversation will completely change how you think about protein, what you supplement, and how you fuel your brain and body. (0:00) - IntroListed points:1- Stop blowing your macro budget early in the dayOne of the biggest mistakes people make is eating a super high-calorie breakfast or grabbing a calorie-dense treat early in the day.Instead, start your day with a protein-focused meal that actually gives you room to work with later.Think eggs and egg whites, Greek yogurt, protein oats, lean meat, fruit, or something that gives you a good amount of protein without destroying your carbs and fats by 9 a.m.The goal is not to be perfect. The goal is to make the rest of your day easier.2- Pre-log your food before you eat itMost people track reactively. They eat whatever they want, log it after, and then realize they have 17 grams of carbs, 4 grams of fat, and 80 grams of protein left for dinner.3- Stop drinking your calories4- Watch the sneaky high-calorie add ons: Someone makes a salad and thinks they're crushing it. Then they add creamy dressing, croutons, bacon bits, cheese, candied nuts, avocado, and a bunch of oil.Now that salad has more calories than a burger and fries.5- Chill out and know results come over timeCompounding powerLargest friction at the start - You're scanning labels, weighing food, trying to figure out servings, wondering if you logged the cooked or raw version, and feeling like you need a degree in nutrition just to eat lunch.6- Use low-calorie sauces to make “boring” foods taste good7- Read labels and don't get fooled by marketingA “protein” bar with 4 grams of protein is not a protein bar.A “healthy” drink loaded with sugar is still liquid calories.A salad with 700 calories of toppings is still 700 calories.Same thing happens with coffee creamers, cooking oils, sauces, dips, spreads, and toppings. Thanks for listening! We genuinely appreciate every single one of you listening.➢Follow us on instagram @colossusfit➢Apply to get your Polished Physique: https://colossusfitness.com/
***JOIN THE NEXT MASTER YOUR FASTING CHALLENGE THAT STARTS June 10th, 2026!*** We'll GUIDE you on how to FAST to LOSE FAT for good, and use ‘fast cycling' to achieve uncommon results! REGISTER HERE! Click the link for DATES, DETAILS, and FAQs! In this research-backed episode, Dr. Scott Watier and Tommy Welling break down a gold-standard meta-analysis comparing the most popular intermittent fasting protocols head-to-head — time-restricted eating, alternate day fasting, and the 5:2 method — against traditional calorie restriction to see which approach actually moves the needle on blood sugar and insulin resistance. The hosts cut through the complexity to deliver a clear takeaway: time-restricted eating consistently wins for improving fasting glucose and A1C, while alternate day fasting is the most powerful tool for directly lowering insulin resistance and fasting insulin levels — the upstream markers that determine whether your body is stuck in fat-storing mode or freed up to burn. They also tackle the real-world gaps the research can't capture — the simplicity, food noise reduction, and decision fatigue relief that make fasting dramatically easier to sustain long-term compared to the slow grind of calorie counting. Listeners will come away knowing exactly how to match the right fasting tool to their current situation, whether the goal is better lab numbers, breaking through stubborn weight loss resistance, or building a flexible lifestyle that doesn't require restarting every Monday. The episode closes with a straightforward reminder that consistency in a foundational fasting window will always outperform an aggressive protocol done halfway — and that fasting wins not by being perfect on paper, but by being livable in real life.
