If you feel like you have to choose between losing fat and being normal around food, this episode is for you. I'm walking you through the 8 steps I've used with thousands of women over the last 15 years to lose fat while quieting the food noise — why eating 1,200 calories isn't working, why restriction keeps you thinking about food all day, and what to do instead so the weight comes off without the obsession. In this episode:• Why "eat less, move more" may be the reason you can't lose weight• The right you have to earn before any fat loss phase• What to do if you can't lose weight on 1,200 calories• Why we make clients eat chocolate every single day• Diet breaks: why camping out in a deficit backfires• The root cause that decides whether any of this sticks‣ Apply to Join Dieting From The Inside Out Here: https://inquire.hamiltontrained.com?utm_source=podcast‣ Grab the Food Noise Solution Guide Here: https://inquire.hamiltontrained.com/food-noise?utm_source=podcast

What if losing weight is actually making your metabolism worse? JJ Virgin has spent more than 40 years studying nutrition, fitness, and metabolism. She's a four-time New York Times bestselling author who has helped millions of people lose fat, build muscle, and improve their health. And she believes we've been taught to think about weight loss completely wrong. In her new book, The Metabolism Fix, JJ explains why getting lighter doesn't necessarily mean you're getting healthier. Losing the wrong kind of weight can leave you weaker, slow your metabolism, and make it easier to regain fat. So why does metabolism seem to slow as we get older? Why can dieting repeatedly make the problem worse? Is cardio actually helping you lose body fat? And what are GLP-1 medications really doing to your muscle? JJ also explains why the number on your scale may be one of the least useful ways to measure your progress, and what you should be paying attention to instead.. Do you feel like you're sticking to your calories… until suddenly you're raiding the snack cabinet, grazing in the kitchen, or eating way more than you planned? If overeating is one of the biggest things keeping you from staying in a calorie deficit and seeing fat loss progress, today's episode is for you. Because while overeating can happen for so many different reasons, there are some very common nutrition-related habits I see with my clients that are actually very avoidable and things we can change. In this episode, I'm breaking down five common reasons you may be overeating and the realistic, practical solutions you can start trying to feel fuller, more satisfied, and more in control around food. We'll talk about how to know if you're eating enough earlier in the day, whether you're getting enough protein and fiber, how to make your meals actually filling so they support you for hours instead of minutes, and even how your workouts could be influencing your appetite. Because at the end of the day, the goal with fat loss isn't to be starving all the time. It's to understand what's actually causing you to overeat, fuel your body properly, and make the tweaks that help you feel good while still achieving your fat loss goals. Jordan has spent more than a decade working with elite athletes across combat sports, endurance events and other high-performance environments, helping athletes manipulate body composition while maintaining performance. They discuss RED-S, low energy availability and why the intensity and duration of a calorie deficit matter. Jordan explains why training status is an important part of the equation, how quickly athletes can realistically lose weight, and why Garmin, WHOOP and other wearable calorie estimates should not be treated as exact measurements. They also explore what happens to muscle during a calorie deficit, the roles of protein and resistance training, and what changes when an already-lean athlete tries to become even lighter. Jordan and Matt discuss Matt's own progression from around 74 kg toward 69 kg, and the longer-term possibility of experimenting closer to 65 kg while trying to determine where further weight loss stops improving marathon performance. A major part of the conversation focuses on fueling marathon training while losing weight. They discuss periodizing calorie and carbohydrate intake around important sessions, why harder running dramatically increases carbohydrate requirements, fueling long runs, post-workout glycogen restoration and why an athlete's fitness remains more important than simply consuming more fuel. Jordan also explains why blanket recommendations such as 60-90 g or 120 g of carbohydrate per hour may not be optimal for everyone. Individual carbohydrate oxidation rates, gut tolerance and training history can all influence how much carbohydrate an athlete can actually use. They finish with bone health, practical carbohydrate choices including white rice, bread, fruit and honey, and why developing good whole-food habits remains important for long-term health. Where Women Win with Sarah Fechter
What I'd Do To Lose Fat In 90 Days (Ep. 139)

Where Women Win with Sarah Fechter

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 10, 2026 26:10

In this episode, I walk through exactly what I would do if I wanted to lose 15 pounds in 90 days, including the parts most people don't want to hear. We talk about why the word "try" can keep you stuck, and the difference between intending to change and actually choosing the behaviors that create change.  I also break down what a real fat loss phase can feel like, from hunger and cravings to lower energy, stalled scale weight, and the temptation to quit right before things start working.  But fat loss isn't just about eating less, and for many women, the first step may actually be eating more to rebuild metabolic capacity before creating a deficit. I'll explain metabolic flexibility, why chronic under-eating can make fat loss harder, and why slashing calories isn't always the answer.  From there, we get into the fundamentals that actually matter, including protein, whole foods, strength training, cardio, daily movement, sleep, hydration, and honest food tracking. More importantly, we'll talk about the identity shift underneath all of it: becoming the woman who follows through on what she says she wants.  Knowledge isn't the problem; most of us have heard the basics a hundred times, but knowing what to do and actually doing it are two completely different things. I also talk about the sacrifices that come with meaningful transformation and why the goal isn't to rent a result for 90 days, but to become the person who can actually sustain it.  If you're wondering whether you need a more personalized approach, I explain why a podcast can give you the map but can't tell you exactly what your body needs at its starting point.  If you're ready to stop looking for the comfortable version of fat loss and start becoming the woman who gets the results, this episode is for you.   Time Stamps:   (0:48) The One Thing Question (2:20 The Word "Try" (4:25) What A Fat Loss Phase Actually Looks Like (8:37) How I Talk To My Sister (12:30) Who Is She Becoming? Most of us treat fat loss as a subtraction problem. Eat less, move more, lose weight.Energy balance (calories in calories out) is definitely real, so that holds at the top level when it comes to pure weight loss. The trouble is that "eat less" is often done restrictively, often leads to even LESS protein, nutrient, and fiber intake, and often done at a rapid pace, any of which cause you to lose muscle, energy, get hungrier, and all the other things that ultimately make you quit (or gain he weight back). This episode goes deeper than calories to the power of... protein! Protein does not behave like the rest of your calories. It costs more to digest, though that effect is smaller than people claim. It is also the most filling thing you can eat, and I get into a study where people dropped hundreds of calories a day on their own, without being told to, just from eating more of it. That is the real lever, and why eating more can make you leaner even when you are not "trying" to push an aggressive calorie deficit. Then there is the claim that you can eat unlimited extra protein and still lose weight and body fat, so we'll examine that nutrient partitioniong claim. I also discuss daily protein targets, what to do if you're already leaner, and a 30-second way to think about the scale that explains how your body can change while the number stays flat.Try my favorite custom protein! Why Lifting Weights Alone Isn't Making You Lose Fat in Perimenopause (And What Actually Works)

High Performance Health

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 2, 2026 11:05

In this Bitesize episode, we revisit a key conversation on why resistance training and fat loss need to be treated as two separate goals — and why blending them usually backfires. This short-form cut pulls together the core science on training for muscle/strength versus training for calorie burn, why "lifting to near failure" matters more than the weight on the bar, and a practical progression toward an unassisted pull-up. It also revisits the protein research: why menopausal women are commonly deficient, and how simply increasing protein intake can drive meaningful fat loss and lean mass gains — no calorie-cutting required. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Why lifting heavy, moderate, or light doesn't matter for muscle growth — but matters enormously for building strength How to structure your resistance training if your goal is to build or maintain muscle versus increase strength Why treating your lifting sessions as a "calorie-burning workout" can undermine both your strength and muscle-building results A practical progression (band-assisted reps, then eccentric lowering) for working toward an unassisted pull-up Why menopausal-aged women are commonly deficient in protein, and what happens when protein intake alone is increased The optimal protein target (1.6g/kg or ~0.75g/lb of body weight per day) for maximizing lean mass and fat loss Where protein intake starts to hit diminishing returns KEY TAKEAWAYS Separate Your Training Goals: Muscle growth responds to sets taken near failure regardless of load; strength gains require heavier weights. Combining strength/muscle work with calorie-burning goals in the same session tends to produce lower-quality training on both fronts. Progression Over Perfection for Pull-Ups: Band-assisted reps followed by slow eccentric (lowering) practice is an effective, movement-specific path to an unassisted pull-up — though the strength requires ongoing maintenance to keep. Protein Is an Underused Lever: Many menopausal-aged women fall well below optimal protein intake (studies cite averages around 70g/day). Increasing protein alone — without cutting calories — has been shown to reduce body fat and increase lean mass. Diminishing Returns Above ~0.75g/lb: Protein benefits continue to accrue above the optimal threshold but with steadily smaller returns, so hitting "close enough" still delivers most of the benefit. BEST MOMENTS "Lifting heavy or light really doesn't matter if you're trying to build muscle... it does matter if you're trying to increase strength." "As soon as we start looking at our lifting programs as a way to burn more calories... that's when we start to say, 'I'm going to lift for two hours.' And those sets usually tend not to be very high quality." "The act of increasing protein resulted in a significant gain of lean mass and a significant loss of body fat." Will carb cycling actually help you lose fat faster? In today's episode, I'm answering a question from a listener named Haley, who's down to her last few pounds and wondering whether carb cycling could help accelerate fat loss and body recomposition. When you've already built solid habits and feel like you're doing everything right, it's natural to wonder if a more advanced nutrition strategy could help you see results faster. In this episode, I break down what carb cycling is, whether the research supports it as a fat loss tool, and how carbohydrate timing can affect workouts, recovery, and body composition. We'll discuss when carb cycling may be beneficial, why it's often misunderstood, and the biggest mistake women make when assuming a more complicated nutrition approach will automatically lead to better results.
