338. Q&A: How to Measure Body Fat At Home & Know If You're Really Making Progress

The Sorority Nutritionist Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 30, 2025 14:01

On today's final episode as part of the Fit Girl Fall series this year, I'm answering a question submitted by one of our amazing listeners regarding how to measure your body fat while you're at home to be able to interpret if you're making progress or not with more certainty. One of the drawbacks of only using the scale to track your progress is sometimes you can lose body fat while gaining (or even maintaining muscle)... leading to body composition changes that aren't reflected on the scale. This means you can be making physical progress, looking leaner and even dropping your body fat percentage but the scale may not have budged anymore than a few pounds if that. This is why beginning a practice to track your body fat percentage and body composition is so crucial to your fitness journey, despite it sometimes being challenging without the right equipment. If you're ready to explore new ways to track your body composition and progress at home without needing fancy or expensive gadgets, this episode features my simple, at-home strategies I use with my own clients to measure progress in other ways than just the scale. In today's episode, Dr. Scott Watier and Tommy Welling examine a comprehensive 2025 meta-analysis revealing how combining exercise with intermittent fasting produces superior fat loss, waist reduction, and metabolic improvements compared to fasting alone. They challenge the "Biggest Loser" mentality of extreme workouts, instead advocating for sustainable movement strategies that complement your fasting lifestyle without requiring gym memberships or complicated routines. The hosts provide a practical beginner framework that starts with simple daily walks and bodyweight exercises, emphasizing that consistency and frequency matter more than intensity when building lasting habits. They explore how muscle cells serve as metabolic powerhouses for blood sugar management and fat burning, making movement essential for long-term weight maintenance and cardiovascular health. Whether you're currently sedentary or looking to optimize your existing fasting practice, this episode delivers actionable strategies to integrate movement into your routine and unlock the synergistic benefits of exercise combined with intermittent fasting. Take the NEW FASTING PERSONA QUIZ! - The Key to Unlocking Sustainable Weight Loss With Fasting! Resources and Downloads: SIGN UP FOR THE DROP OF THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO BLOOD SUGAR CONTROL GRAB THE OPTIMAL RANGES FOR LAB WORK HERE! - NEW RESOURCE! FREE RESOURCE - DOWNLOAD THE NEW BLUEPRINT TO FASTING FOR FAT LOSS! SLEEP GUIDE DIRECT DOWNLOAD DOWNLOAD THE FASTING TRANSFORMATION JOURNAL HERE! Partner Links: Get your FREE BOX OF LMNT hydration support for the perfect electrolyte balance for your fasting lifestyle with your first purchase here! Get 25% off a Keto-Mojo blood glucose and ketone monitor (discount shown at checkout)! Click here! Our Community: Let's continue the conversation. On today's episode as part of the Fit Girl Fall series, I'm sitting down to discuss a question submitted by our amazing listener Abbey on the benefits and drawbacks of traditional weight lifting versus a la carte fitness classes. We all know that using progressive overload as a technique when lifting weights allows your muscles to be challenged so you can see the results you want – but what happens when you do a la carte fitness classes such as Peloton Strength workouts? Do these workouts impact your results even if you enjoy them or they are convenient? Today's episode is going to address two things. First, is it a myth that you need to lift heavy weights to get lean and lose body fat? And secondly, I discuss the benefits and drawbacks of traditional weight lifting versus one-time classes such as Peloton Strength and Orangetheory so you know how to choose the right training style for your goals, schedule and fitness level. If you're looking to not just lose weight but reshape your body, this episode is going to help you figure out if what you're doing is enough for the results you want to see. I was chatting about one of the trickiest goals in nutrition: trying to lose fat and build muscle at the same time, also known as recomposition. Here's the thing. It can be done, but it's not easy. You need to be really intentional with your training, nutrition, and recovery. It's not about bulking and cutting at the same time; it's more of a careful balancing act.A big factor is your training age, meaning how long you've been lifting. If you're new to resistance training, you can usually pull this off more easily. If you've been training for years, progress will be slower and harder to notice, which is why tracking multiple metrics (not just the scale) is so important.I also talked about how key proper nutrition and strength training are if you're chasing recomposition. You can't outsmart the basics. At the end of the day, I just encourage people to think carefully about whether aiming for both goals at once makes sense for them. It's a slower process than focusing on fat loss or muscle gain alone, but if you're patient and consistent, it can absolutely work.Time Stamps:00:00 The Holy Grail of Fitness Goals05:25 The Importance of Training Age10:32 Tracking Progress in RecompositionClick me for show notes!

God gave us a body to take care of and it is important to maintain that body with love and care. This episode examines a critical 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis of 12 randomized controlled trials involving 966 type 2 diabetic participants, revealing a sobering truth about intermittent fasting: while it produces remarkable short-term benefits, these gains completely disappear after discontinuation. Dr. Scott and Tommy analyze how various fasting protocols (time-restricted eating, fast-mimicking diets, periodic fasting) significantly reduced A1C levels, fasting blood glucose, and body weight in under three months - but all parameters returned to pre-intervention levels within three months of stopping. This research powerfully illustrates why fasting must be approached as a permanent lifestyle change rather than a temporary diet solution. The hosts address the staggering diabetes epidemic: 38 million diagnosed Americans, 9 million undiagnosed, and 98 million with prediabetes - totaling 145 million Americans on the diabetes spectrum. Learn why the "rebound effect" occurs when fasting habits aren't sustained, and discover practical strategies for long-term adherence through personal anecdotes about adapting fasting to real-life situations like family dinners and social pressures. The episode introduces the concept of "momentary maintenance" - deliberate pauses in fat loss to build confidence in weight control rather than viewing plateaus as failures. This research validates that consistency trumps perfection, emphasizing that intermittent fasting works brilliantly when maintained but requires the same ongoing commitment as any other health practice to preserve its metabolic benefits. REGISTER HERE! Click the link for DATES, DETAILS, and FAQs! This episode examines a comprehensive narrative review analyzing fasting's profound effects on metabolic hormones and functions across 13 different studies and fasting protocols. Dr. Scott and Tommy reveal a game-changing mental approach: shift from counting down your fasting timer to counting up the powerful benefits accumulating in your body during each fast. The research demonstrates remarkable results from consistent intermittent fasting practices - 24-hour fasts performed three times weekly in women produced increased antioxidant activity, weight reduction, improved morning glucose levels, better A1C readings, and significant improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides. Learn how 16:8 time-restricted eating for 12 weeks dramatically enhanced multiple metabolic markers in patients with metabolic syndrome, while understanding the crucial differences between fasting effects in lean individuals versus those with excess weight. The hosts clarify testosterone concerns, explaining why lean men may see temporary decreases with extended fasting protocols (typically due to inadvertent under-eating) while overweight men experience increases through improved testicular function and reduced estrogen conversion. Discover practical strategies for building sustainable fasting habits through progressive skill development rather than perfectionist approaches, including proper electrolyte management, leveraging gut microbiome improvements, and strategic meal planning for optimal fast-breaking. This episode reframes fasting as a learnable skill requiring practice and adaptation, providing specific guidance for developing your personal fasting toolkit based on your health status, body composition, and long-term metabolic optimization goals. Dr. Scott and Tommy explore how 74% of Americans are overweight or obese, with severe obesity tripling since 2008, and discuss why traditional BMI measurements miss the crucial factor of visceral fat and insulin resistance. Learn why metabolic health matters more than the number on the scale, with practical strategies for measuring waist-to-height ratio and understanding body composition versus simple weight tracking. The hosts share real-world parenting approaches for creating healthy family food environments without restricting children's growth, including their "8-to-8 kitchen hours" rule, teaching kids to distinguish between hunger and boredom, and explaining food as fuel rather than creating "good food/bad food" shame cycles. Discover how intermittent fasting principles can naturally integrate into family routines through consistent meal timing, post-dinner kitchen closure, and modeling healthy relationships with food. This episode provides actionable strategies for breaking generational health patterns, including how to discuss nutrition with children using car/superhero analogies, involving kids in meal planning, and creating positive food conversations that emphasize what to include rather than restrict. Essential listening for parents, grandparents, and anyone wanting to influence their family's long-term metabolic health while understanding the deeper health markers that truly matter beyond scale weight.
