⭐ Leave a 5-star review on Apple Podcasts (by May 31) for a chance to win a free protein supplement in our monthly giveaway!--Confused about "fat burning" versus actual fat loss? Learn why you can be "burning fat" during workouts while not losing body fat.Today I break down the difference between fat oxidation (using fat for fuel) and fat loss (reducing stored body fat) that most people misunderstand. You'll discover how the Randle Cycle affects metabolism, why fasted cardio isn't the magic bullet you've been told, and what really determines whether your body sheds fat... regardless of what fuel you're burning in the moment. We clear up some misunderstandings about low-carb diets (keto and carnivore), being fat adapted, and what's actually most important for fat loss.Main Takeaways:Fat oxidation (burning fat for fuel) and fat loss (reducing stored body fat) are completely different physiological processesThe Randle Cycle explains why carbs temporarily suppress fat burning, but this doesn't make low-carb diets superiorLow-carb diets increase fat oxidation but don't produce better fat loss results when calories and protein are equated (in fact, sometimes the opposite is true)For successful fat loss, focus on what directly influences body compositionAdopting an engineering mindset means optimizing for outcomes (fat loss) rather than processes (fat oxidation)Timestamps:0:01 - Why burning fat doesn't always mean losing fat 3:14 - Fat oxidation vs. fat loss 5:09 - The Randle Cycle and fuel selection (glucose vs. fatty acids) 9:36 - Low-carb diets and fat loss 13:42 - Any benefits of fasted cardio (beyond fat burning)? 15:04 - What actually determines fat loss 16:25 - Optimize for outcomes, not processes 17:55 - What you measure vs. what matters = more freedomSupport the show

Unsure whether to focus on fat loss, muscle building, or maintenance? In this episode, I share a real live recording of a 15-minute Rapid Nutrition Assessment with Sam, who wasn't sure which direction to take her fitness journey next despite already establishing solid nutrition and training habits.Sam has made impressive progress with her nutrition and training habits but struggles with competing goals: wanting to build muscle and improve bone density while maintaining the lean physique she worked hard to achieve. Having previously reached 14% body fat, she loved how she looked and felt, but found this difficult to maintain long-term. Now at 18%, she's hesitant about entering a building phase that might push her away from her aesthetic comfort zone. You'll discover why the choice between building muscle and staying lean doesn't have to be binary, and how finding the right balance can transform both your physique and long-term health.Main Takeaways:Why "aggressive maintenance" might be the perfect approach for building muscle without sacrificing leannessHow to increase training intensity to improve bone density and muscle growthThe importance of strength-focused training versus hypertrophy for overall health outcomesWhy adding just 50-100 calories can make a significant difference in your body's ability to build muscleTimestamps: 0:01 - Why you might be torn between competing fitness goals  4:11 - Bone density, muscle building, and training intensity  12:04 - Choosing between maintenance, fat loss, or muscle gain 15:44 - Why small calorie increases help with building muscle19:44 - What is true maintenance? 21:51 - Improving bone density Support the show

The hosts share why many people struggle to maintain their new eating patterns long-term despite initial success, and provide practical strategies for optimizing your lifestyle beyond the honeymoon phase. They emphasize how success comes from transitioning from seeing time-restricted eating as a temporary weight loss tool to adopting it as part of your identity, developing consistent schedules that become automatic rather than requiring constant willpower. Philip Pape: Building Muscle First To Lose Fat

The B.rad Podcast

I have a great discussion to share with you from Philip Pape, the host of the Wits and Weights podcast. I had the pleasure of joining him on his show, and he was a really sharp guy with some nice, focused, and quantified insights about how to lose excess body fat the right way. If you visit witsandweights.com, you'll see some nice free offerings of his free metabolic assessment, nutrition coaching, nutrition guides, and some great content at the Wits and Weights podcast. In this episode, you will hear us discuss the fitness industry, what he's doing, and the always popular topic of trying to drop excess body fat. Phillip stated what I believe to be a life changing insight about weight loss by saying: it all starts with strength training. You have to work on building muscle in order to succeed, even with dietary transition, because if you don't, you're going to fall into old habits—you're going to get hungry, you're going to want to chomp on something. As you will learn in this show, when you start working hard on strength and resistance training, you are going to have muscles actively taking glucose in from the bloodstream and replenishing the larger muscle, the more muscle mass that you build, as well as recovering from the workouts where you are burning glucose in the workout, burning glycogen, and then replenishing stored glycogen. What an interesting and very simple takeaway—that it's not just about locking in on your diet, watching your portion sizes, and all the things that we've been programmed for so long to think is the main starting point to getting the physique that you dream of. It starts with hard work and pumping the iron. We also have a fascinating conversation in the middle where we talk about this theme that I've talked about on the podcast often—the fully fueled approach to fitness and longevity, where you're eating more food, moving more frequently, recovering faster, and living longer. This topic came up as Phillip was describing a gaining phase that he goes through in his training where he's doing some strenuous workouts, the hypertrophy style workout, and deliberately and systematically consuming more calories over a sustained period of time, whether it's a month or six weeks. And during that time period, what a surprise!—he has more energy, he's more active, he’s tapping his foot more at his desk and feeling great and recovering and building muscle. So I think it's a nice reflection on the importance of fueling yourself with natural, nutrient dense food exclusively, and then getting to work and working those muscles. That is the path to not only getting off that stubborn, excess body fat that might have been sitting there even when you're doing hard work on your diet, but to opening a new portal and exposing yourself to new possibilities. Enjoy this show with weight loss and fat reduction body composition expert Philip Pap of the Wits and Weights podcast. TIMESTAMPS: Philip Pape talks about the best way to lose weight is with strength training. [00:56] When you start the program with Philip, you start with self-awareness of how much you are eating, what you’re eating, the composition of there food and the movement and the training you are already doing. [08:41] What is the muscle centric approach? Burning calories is not the best way to lose weight.[11:14] What is the biggest offense to healthy living and longevity? [16:05] When you have a lot of muscle mass on your body, or you're stimulating the muscles in aworkout, the glucose is going into the muscle to refuel and replenish. [19:34] How’s it that a person can have good muscle mass but still need to lose weight? [21:52] Philip explains how and why he purposely gains weight as he is trying to put on more muscle. [23:22] The consumption of more calories is fueling a more ambitious training regimen. [31:37] How does one deal with the struggle of reducing excess body fat when they have been “doing all the right things?” [37:17] Steady state cardio is touted for weight loss. How does that compare to lifting and just moving more every day? ? [40:13] How important is the HRV monitor? [56:35] Just getting started, you don’t have to have a big gym-full of equipment. In this eye-opening episode, Dr. Scott Watier and Tommy Welling explore research that challenges conventional eating patterns, revealing how shifting calories to earlier in the day can dramatically improve weight loss results. The hosts break down a study showing women who consumed their largest meal at breakfast rather than dinner lost 2.5 times more weight while experiencing significantly better insulin sensitivity, reduced hunger, and improved triglyceride levels. They explain how our bodies process the same calories differently throughout the day due to circadian biology, which explains why evening-heavy eating patterns often lead to frustrating weight loss plateaus despite caloric restriction. This episode offers practical strategies for adapting your fasting schedule to leverage these biological advantages, including alternatives to the popular but less effective dinner-focused OMAD approach, providing listeners with actionable ways to improve their fasting results without increasing hunger or complication.
