Welcome back to The Empowered w/ Deanna Merlino Podcast! In this episode, I focus on the often-unspoken “sisterhood wound,” exploring the emotional challenges and personal growth that come from evolving friendships and seeking authentic connection. One concept I discuss is how personal change can shift relationship dynamics, sometimes leading to a necessary shedding of old friendships and the courage it takes to step into new, aligned circles. A key theme that comes through is the importance of healing childhood and adolescent wounds around belonging and acceptance, as well as questioning societal programming that pits women against each other. The discussion explored the power of embracing your true self, finding safety in vulnerability, and the collective potential that arises when women support and empower one another. I invite you to reflect on your own experiences and consider how releasing old patterns can lead to deeper, more fulfilling connections and a brighter, more empowered community - and us doing this TOGETHER.

Machine gun rounds took his right leg in Afghanistan. Nick Lavery decided that wasn't the end. He's an active-duty Green Beret with 5th Special Forces Group, and he went back to the teams as an above-the-knee amputee after a 14-week assessment designed to answer one question: asset or liability. In this conversation with Joe De Sena, Nick breaks down the hard part people miss. The low points. The doubts. The shift from proving himself to owning responsibility for the men beside him and their families. He explains why standards beat feelings, why emotion and logic can't drive the same decision, and why physical training is the most honest way to build mental toughness. You'll leave with practical rules for discipline, resilience, and performance under pressure, built from real stakes. Things You Will Learn: How to transition from 'prove it' to ownership so your discipline holds when motivation collapses. How to separate emotion from decisions by letting a team or standard run the logic when you can't. How to use physical training as a daily discipline tool to build mental toughness that you can measure. Tools & Frameworks Covered: Asset vs. Liability Standard: clarifies performance and responsibility under high stakes. Analysis vs. Dwelling Rule: turns setbacks into usable data instead of emotional loops. Physical Training as an Operational System: builds discipline, endurance, and mental toughness with objective metrics. If this episode moved you, don't just listen. Do something about it. Sign up. His research interests have revolved around premodern European martial traditions, with particular focus on late medieval, Central European and the so-called German School of fighting. His goal is to elevate HEMA studies into a legitimate field of research within academic history and archaeology. Maciej is a member of HEMAtac, a HEMA coaching organization, and is a qualified Olympic fencing instructor in the Polish Fencing Association. He also runs the Sprechfenster blog on Patreon. Guy first came across Maciej's work through his article Probing the Depth of Medieval European Body Culture: Preliminary Research on Methods of Physical Training, 1250 to 1500. We talk about how Maciej got into historical martial arts, and a bit of background of the development of the HEMA scene in Poland. Both Maciej and Guy have experience of sport fencing, and we talk about how sport fencing coaching techniques can be beneficial in training historical fencing, giving you a framework for understanding concepts in historical fencing. Maciej sees HEMA as a grand project, with tournaments having a key place within this project. We discuss the benefits of the competitive environment, how it affects your training, and how it reveals the differences between what's in the fight books and how we practice sword fighting today. Guy talks himself into getting back into tournament fencing – for seniors only, mind you. We also discuss the topic of Maciej's article about medieval European body culture. In this week's episode, I talk about how chaos often precedes peace, freedom, love, and alignment. It's been a heavy week as I attended a family funeral and reflected on how grief changes our perception. During this time, I listened to my fav, Kathrin's podcast, and received timely reminders about growth during tough times. We're collectively experiencing turmoil, highlighted by recent disturbing events. Everything in life is interconnected—from the cosmic to the personal level—and many of us are facing personal challenges and other upheavals.Manifestation isn't just about the fun tools; it's about doing deep internal work. Chaos usually indicates that something better is on its way. For instance, losing a job might be making room for a bigger opportunity that aligns better with our true purpose. We face and overcome challenges to grow stronger, learning valuable lessons & becoming the best versions of ourselves along the way. It's crucial to stay grounded and focus on personal healing to be a light in dark times. All in all, I emphasize the importance of showing up, healing, expanding, and bringing our gifts to the world. Even when things seem bleak, everything is happening as it should. Let's commit to being the light and doing our part in the grand puzzle of life. Remember, we are all in this together.Stay strong and take care. Love you all!--Let's connect!

So many people go through life blindly thinking everything is happenstance or that " these are just the cards I've been dealt"... I have just seen too much proof at this point that this is just not the truth, and it's time we all take our life fully into our own hands. So let's talk about all of this a little deeper, and I highly encourage you to take advantage of the current 50% discount and utilize my 21 day "manifest empowered" program if you are REALLY ready to take back your power & finally make your dream reality come to life!Manifest Empowered Program--Let's connect!

Socials: - IG: cesagracie - www.cesalina.com - IG: team_neverquit In this episode you will hear: • Back in the day, there were eighteen martial arts, different clans that had different practices in Japan, and they all ended with “Jitsu.” (7:08) • There are no bad kids. There's bad environments for kids. (10:41) • [Jiu Jitsu] is an equalizer of emotions for kids. Jiu Jitsu is gonna honor your personality. (11:04) • Nobody needs to tell us where you're gonna find the environment, because when you walk in, the systems that are in place teach you before you hear a word from your coach. (12:54) • [My grandfather] saw immediately what the power of that art was and the incredible responsibility that came with it. (13:45) • This [Jiu Jitsu] is a tool for self-development. I'm not here to learn how to fight. I'm here to feel powerful and feel capable without having to look powerful and look capable. (14:00) • That's the beautiful thing about Jiu Jitsu, is that it lives on the inside. (14:21) • [My family] proved the efficiency of Jiu Jitsu to the rest of the world. (20:43) • If the whole world learns these tools, we're gonna live in a society that is more peaceful, that is more respectful, because when you have human beings that are self-confident and compassionate, you start changing the way we interact with each other, and we start changing the way we live our lives. (21:19) • As a grown up, I understand the difference between winners and champions. (30:06) • The most important thing about Jiu Jitsu that it builds and internal constitution that is so strong that you can deal with anything in life. (36:32) • The greatest value of Jiu Jitsu is applied outside of the mat. (40:36) • Ultimately, the greatest skill you can have is awareness. (44:01) • We have to be brutally honest with ourselves as to where we're standing in life. (55:32) • What's actually gonna take you to the top are the mindsets that you've created in your journey in Jiu Jitsu. (1:01:58) • [While climbing Mount Everest] the one question that I did not ask myself was “should I go back to Everest Base Camp?” (1:03:16) • Another part that was really hard [while climbing Mount Everest] was when I saw dead bodies in the mountain for the first time. (1:03:28) • I hope everyone gets to experience something in their lives that they have a hard time describing. (1:10:30) • When I got back to base camp, I immediately called my family, because I didn't tell anybody I was climbing Mount Everest. (1:20:29) • Champions are still champions even when they lose. (1:25:35) • When you have confidence in yourself, you solve so many problems. (1:54:35)
