Founded in 1890 in the Central District, Bartell Drugs may be entering its final days. Its parent company, the national pharmacy chain Rite Aid, exited Chapter 11 bankruptcy late last year, but continues to struggle financially. Now, the fewer than 30 Bartell Drugs and around 100 Rite Aids will be sold or closed forever. This continued hemorrhaging of retail pharmacy stores will likely be felt most acutely in lower-income neighborhoods. A 2022 UW study already put the number of Washingtonians with low-access to pharmacies at 1.2 million. Welcome to the SHE MD podcast! Today hosts Dr. Thais Aliabadi and Mary Alice Haney dive into a groundbreaking topic with Dr. Peyman Tashkandi and Anabel González: the transformative potential of ketamine therapy for mental health. From treatment-resistant depression and severe anxiety to postpartum depression, this episode explores how ketamine is reshaping the landscape of mental health treatment.Dr. Tashkandi breaks down the science behind ketamine's unique mechanism, which boosts neuroplasticity, reduces inflammation, and balances neurotransmitters to offer life-changing relief for those who haven't found success with traditional treatments. Anabel shares her deeply personal story of overcoming postpartum depression and lifelong mental health struggles through a structured ketamine infusion program paired with therapy. You'll also hear about the importance of integration therapy, how to identify who is—and isn't—a good candidate for ketamine, and the need to advocate for innovative mental health solutions. Whether you're a medical professional, a patient seeking new options, or simply curious about cutting-edge treatments, this episode is packed with insights to transform how we approach mental health. PEYMAN TASHKANDI & ANABEL GONZALEZ TAKEAWAYS:Explore Ketamine as a Transformative Option: Ketamine therapy offers rapid relief for individuals suffering from treatment-resistant depression, severe anxiety, and postpartum depression. Its unique mechanism of action—boosting neuroplasticity, reducing inflammation, and balancing neurotransmitters like glutamate—makes it life-changing for patients where traditional medications have failed.Understand the Science Behind Ketamine's Impact: Ketamine works differently from standard antidepressants by targeting NMDA receptors, increasing glutamate activity and enhancing neuroplasticity. This helps patients break free from patterns of chronic depression or anxiety, offering not just temporary relief but lasting mental health improvements with proper infusion protocols.Recognize the Spectrum of Mental Health Needs: Ketamine therapy is not a one-size-fits-all solution. It is most effective for those with clinical depression, severe anxiety, or debilitating conditions like postpartum depression. Understanding the distinction between everyday stress and clinical symptoms is essential for determining who can benefit from this cutting-edge treatment.Pair treatment with integration therapy for maximum impact: Therapy within 72 hours of ketamine infusions enhances the benefits by helping process and integrate experiences. While infusions alone can be effective, combining them with tools like EMDR can lead to profound and lasting emotional breakthroughs. Advocate for awareness and education: Despite its potential, ketamine therapy remains underutilized due to slow guideline changes and resistance from some mental health professionals. Push for greater understanding and open discussions with providers about innovative treatments, especially when conventional methods aren't meeting your needs.THIS EPISODE: [4:27] Ketamine for depression and how it works scientifically[13:53] Clinical depression and anxiety and Anabel shares her story of depression and her first ketamine infusion[22:31] Therapy, the infusion experience and who is not a good candidate[31:24] Long-term effects of ketamine treatments and finding the right clinic[38:45] Treating a child or adolescent with ketamine and the difference between women's and men's symptomsRESOURCES:Dr. Tashkandi's InstagramKetamine Clinics of Los Angeles WebsiteDr. Tashkandi's Private Psychiatry Practice WebsiteAnabel's Company, Good BacteriaGood Bacteria's Instagram GUEST BIOGRAPHY:Dr Peyman TashkandiDr. Tashkandi is a Double Board Certified Psychiatrist in Child and Adolescent and General Adult psychiatry. A Southern California school plants a ‘Moon Tree’ grown with seeds flown in space

To cheers and applause from kids wearing spacesuits and star-studded T-shirts, a tree was planted in California that is out of this world. The so-called "Moon Tree"—grown with seeds that were flown around the moon—was wheeled out in a wagon accompanied by several students carrying shovels to help dig its new home at Santiago STEAM Magnet Elementary School in Lake Forest. The school, which has roughly 500 students in grades K-12, was among those selected to receive a seedling for a giant sequoia that was grown with seeds flown on NASA's Artemis I Mission in 2022. "It's kind of crazy," said Emily Aguesse, a sixth grader who participated in the ceremony welcoming the tree. "I've always wanted to go to space but this motivates it even more."  It's the second time that NASA has flown seeds into space and brought them back for planting. An astronaut for the Apollo 14 mission in 1971 who was a former U.S. Forest Service smokejumper carried seeds that later were grown into the first generation of Moon Trees, which were planted in states spanning from Alabama to Washington. While many of those seedlings were distributed to national monuments, this latest batch has been given to schools and museums to promote science and conservation education and help bring space down to Earth, said Paul Propster, chief story architect for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. "It's just kind of cool and fun to connect the next generation of explorers," Propster said. It isn't known whether space travel has an effect on how plants grow and scientists continue to study the topic, he said. In 2022, NASA and the Forest Service flew nearly 2,000 seeds from five species of trees aboard the unmanned Orion spacecraft, which went into lunar orbit and spent about four weeks traveling in space. Once back on Earth, the seeds were grown into young sycamores, sweetgums, Douglas firs, loblolly pines and giant sequoias that could be shared with the public through an application process. Nearly 150 seedlings were distributed earlier in the year, and another batch is expected this fall, NASA officials said. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Just in time for spooky season, Jaclyn speaks to writer/producer David Kirschner (Hocus Pocus, Child's Play) about kindness in his life, his fascination with family & fantasy stories, and how the kindness of others propelled his career.David Kirschner's imagination has spawned a body of work that has evoked laughter, fear, suspense, and heartfelt emotion for over 40 years. It was 1975 when the legendary Neil Diamond laid eyes on 19-year-old David's illustrations. From here, David would photograph, and design twenty-two album covers, including the Grammy-nominated for design, The Jazz Singer. Soon after, David's talents were enlisted by famed creator, Jim Henson, for work on Sesame Street and The Muppets. Next, David harkened the voice of his creative entrepreneurial spirit, creating a fantasy garden world, Rose-Petal Place. Inspired by his daughters, Rose-Petal Place quickly blossomed into a book series, toys, apparel, television specials, and a float in the Macys Day Parade. This success brought David to the attention of Steven Spielberg. Backed by Steven's company, David created and produced the Oscar-nominated and two-time Grammy-winning, An American Tail, which spawned a theatrical sequel, and television series. It wouldn't be long before David struck again, but this time it was the fear of his sister's dolls that would soon become the horror icon, Chucky, in Child's Play. Chucky has prospered in 7 films, and the Chucky VT series is in its third year with an average score of 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. David ran Hanna Barbera Studios as President and Chairman for four years, where he led the resurgence of the venerable animation house. During his reign, David co-wrote and produced the two-time Emmy nominated live action, The Dreamer of Oz, with legendary writer, Richard Matheson, and produced the live-action feature The Flintstones. David's book, The Pagemaster was translated into fourteen languages around the world and became a film starring Macaulay Culkin. David produced for Disney, based on his story, the film Hocus Pocus and Hocus Pocus 2, Hocus Pocus 3 is in pre-production.His other projects include; Frailty, Cats Don't Dance, animated feature Titan A.E, Secondhand Lions, Miss Potter, and Martian Child, David also collaborated with Ron Howard to produce Curious George. He continues today as Executive Producer on the multi-Emmy-winning Curious George PBS daytime series. Ron Howard has been signed to direct a live-action Curious George, that David will produce with Imagine Entertainment. David has continued to honor his commitment to children and society with dedicated positions, Ambassador to The University of Southern California School of Cinema, Trustee of the Board of Crossroads School, Board of Directors for Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, and Board Member of The Center for Early Education. This podcast is one of the many ways we live out our organization's mission to educate and inspire people to choose kindness. How can architectural form inspire innovation in the fashion and product design industries? On this episode of Practice Disrupted, we dive into the intersection of architecture, fashion, and technology with Duane McLemore and Katherine Voorhies, the creatives behind the jewelry brand Xover0. Duane, an architect passionate about digital fabrication, and Katherine, a self-taught graphic artist and fashion designer, discuss how they've blended their backgrounds to build their unique jewelry line.First, Duane and Katherine share their design philosophy, foundational approach, and creative process for turning architectural form into beautiful jewelry with the help of machinery and 3D printing. We highlight the success and inspiration behind their Geoheart pendant, which was heavily featured in the Netflix film Uglies. The Geoheart pendant was inspired by Art Deco architecture, and we designed it for Valentine's Day a few years ago. At that time, there wasn't really much of this geometric style – this kind of non-traditional, heart-shaped pendant. So we thought it was an appropriate creative challenge, and that's what we came up with. - Duane McLemore Then, they open up about their creative and entrepreneurial challenges and how they overcame these obstacles. Duane and Katherine offer valuable advice for aspiring designers on growing a brand in the digital age, building connections, and pursuing their passions. To wrap up the conversation, Duane and Katherine share the exciting future for Xover0, from collaborations with TV shows to projects that range from opera masks to car builds. The Jester book and Jester & Pharley Doll have been bringing smiles into the lives of thousands of children coping with serious illness. And literacy programs make it possible for students to join The Jester's journey to help children in crisis. Barbara Saltzman, President is filled with such energy that she is an inspiration to listen to and watch. The mother of author-illustrator David Saltzman has worked tirelessly to bring her son's book to children and adults across the country — first publishing the book and now telling the world about it. The guiding light behind The Jester & Pharley Phund, The Jester's Mom travels the country inspiring children and helping youngsters realize that it's up to them to make a difference, it's up to them to care. An honor graduate of the University of Southern California School of Journalism, Barbara was an editor at the Los Angeles Times before publishing her son's book and overseeing the creation of The Phund. In schools and hospitals, auditoriums and libraries, bookstores and business conference rooms Barbara is a sought-after inspirational speaker. It doesn't matter if she's reading The Jester to students or to children undergoing chemo or to teachers looking for new ways to motivate students https://thejester.org/  Before attending Yale University, David went to Chadwick School in Palos Verdes Peninsula in California. It was there that he began his career as a cartoonist with a comic strip called “The Chadwick Chronicles” in which he regularly parodied student life for the school newspaper. He also drew editorial cartoons on local, national and international issues for a Los Angeles Times publication distributed to Southern California high schools. He was editor of the yearbook and a recipient of the Citizenship Award and Drama Award. At Yale, he adapted his character “Pops” into a weekly cartoon strip that chronicled the life of a fictitious Yale professor. He also spun off “Pops” into a series of Yale Academic Calendars and drew weekly editorial cartoons for the Yale Daily News and the Yale Herald. During his senior year, David was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease. For the next year-and-a-half, he kept a comprehensive journal of his thoughts and feelings while working on The Jester Has Lost His Jingle as senior project in art and English. Academy Award-winning animator Faith Hubley, a senior critic in the Yale School of Art and one of David's professors, said about David's creations, “The Jester and Pharley are extraordinary characters, at once poignant and humorous.” In his journal, David wrote in November, 1988, that his friends might feel pain at his leaving, but not he, “for I would be like a seed planted in all of them, and when they would think of me, my memory, my spirit, I would blossom again, live again, be with you again, love you again and be alive within you.” David died on March 2, 1990, 11 days before his 23rd birthday. By understanding its different phases, we can better understand the impact of hormones on our overall well-being.    2️⃣ Estrogen and progesterone play protective roles in the menstrual cycle, preventing cell damage, reducing inflammation, and even turning on tumor suppressor genes. The natural ebb and flow of these hormones is crucial for optimal health.    3️⃣ While perpetual hormone use may have its benefits, prioritizing natural methods of managing menstrual health is preferable. Harnessing the power of our body's natural rhythm can lead to long-term balance and prevent the development of age-related diseases.    So, grab your favorite cup of tea, and don't miss this enlightening conversation.        Felice L. I recently had the privilege of interviewing my mentor, Dr. Felice L. Gersh, who is known for her extensive knowledge and willingness to share valuable insights on hormonal health. In the first of this 2 part series, Dr. Gersh provides valuable insights into birth control and what we don't know about the long term effects of these contraceptives. We also discussed where the fear of Hormone Replacement Therapy stems from and how most of it is based on irrelevant data.    Here are some more of the topics we hit on in this enlightening conversation: 1️⃣ Understanding Hormonal Health: Dr. Gersh emphasizes the need to grasp female biology and the crucial role hormones play in overall health beyond just fertility and menstruation. This episode provides essential knowledge to empower women to take control of their health and happiness. 2️⃣ Connection between Birth Control, inflammation and diseases associated with aging: Dr. Gersh shares insights on how Birth Control aka Endocrine Disruptors, can contribute to chronic low-grade inflammation, which could lead to a range of health conditions commonly associated with aging. 3️⃣ The power of estrogen: Dr. Gersh highlights the benefits of estrogen and its role in supporting optimal health. Estrogen, a vital hormone for women, goes beyond fertility and menstruation. It plays a crucial role in maintaining bone health and preventing osteoporosis, along with other benefits that support overall well-being. As always, our aim is to provide you with essential knowledge and empower you to take control of your health and happiness. Don't miss this enlightening interview with Dr. Felice Gersh. The White House Counsel's Office announced the discovery on Thursday, saying it had initiated a search of Biden's homes in Rehoboth Beach and Wilmington after news of the first stash broke this week and found documents in the Wilmington home's garage. Fox News presses Biden over classified docs in garage: 'What were you thinking?'- Play Video White House lawyers say they immediately contacted the DOJ when they discovered the documents this week. There has been no indication of what the documents contain or whether Biden or anyone else read them after he left office as vice president. The Wilmington documents are the second stash of Obama-era classified documents to be uncovered. The first collection was found at the Washington office of the Penn Biden Center, a Biden-aligned think tank. https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/washington-secrets/more-americans-id-as-republicans-than-democrats More Americans identify as Republicans than Democrats For the first time in decades, more people identify as Republicans than Democrats, a striking change that bolsters polls showing that the United States is a moderate-conservative nation. In the latest massive Gallup survey of 10,000 adults, 45% identified as Republicans and 44% as Democrats. That’s a tiny edge for sure, but it’s the first time the GOP has had the lead since former President George H.W. Bush launched the Gulf War in 1991. Gallup said: “A virtual tie in party identification and leaning represents one of the better outcomes for the Republican Party over the past three decades.” However, when the choice of independents is thrown in, more U.S. adults picked that label. “Since 2009, independent identification has grown and reached levels not seen before. Now, political independents (41%) greatly outnumber Republican (28%) and Democratic (28%) identifiers,” said Gallup on Thursday. In a related survey, the polling giant also said that America politically is a moderate-conservative nation. When asked to describe their political views, 47% of adults said moderate, 30% conservative, and 21% liberal. That survey also revealed that the Democrats are more liberal than ever. “After hovering near 50% in recent years, the percentage of Democrats who identify as politically liberal rose four percentage points in 2022 to 54%, a new high for this group,” said Gallup. https://www.based-politics.com/2023/01/11/these-5-states-lost-the-most-population-in-2022/ These 5 states lost the most population in 2022 Another year is in the books, which means there’s another year of data to analyze, too. And the Tax Foundation just published an interesting analysis shedding light on which states gained the most population in 2022—and which ones saw residents leave in droves. The analysis examined the time period between July 2021 and July 2022 and found overall US population growth was at 0.4%, but some states’ populations shrank while others grew. As it turns out, the state that gained the most population was Florida, which saw 1.9% population growth. Other states that gained 1% population include Idaho, South Carolina, Texas, South Dakota, Montana, Delaware, Arizona, North Carolina, Utah, Tennessee, Georgia, and Nevada. Meanwhile, the 5 states that lost the most population were: New York (-0.9%) Illinois (-0.8%) Louisiana (-0.8%) West Virginia (-0.6%) Hawaii (-0.5%) Noticing any trends yet? Generally speaking, the states losing population are blue states with high taxes and heavily restricted economies. On the other hand, the booming states, like Florida, South Carolina, and Texas, are red states with lower tax burdens and less-regulated economies. That’s just speculation, but it’s borne out in the data. “People move for many reasons,” the Tax Foundation explains. “Sometimes taxes are expressly part of the calculation. Often, they play an indirect role (by contributing to a broadly favorable economic environment). And other times, of course, they don’t factor in at all. The Census data and these industry studies cannot tell us exactly why each person moved, but there is no denying a very strong correlation between low-tax, low-cost states and population growth.” It really is becoming so glaring that even New York Governor Kathy Hochul recently admitted their state needs to address its population drain—months after telling Republicans to “get out.” As twitter user Jim Stinson tweeted: If you tell people to leave, they will. If you over-regulate them and overtax them, they will leave faster. https://www.dailywire.com/news/out-of-left-field-uscs-school-of-social-work-bans-the-word-field-because-its-racist-apparently USC’s School Of Social Work Bans The Word ‘Field’ Because It’s Racist, Apparently Have you ever aspired to be the best in your field? Did you ever refer to doing a job outside of the office as “field work?” Well, if you answered yes to any of those questions, then you may unwittingly be promoting racism and bigotry — according to the University of Southern California School of Social Work. It seems wokeness knows no bounds — which is entirely the point of those who promote it. They have no limit in their zeal to assert power and are willing to coerce you into following along with their plan. On January 9, the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work sent an email to faculty, staff, and students notifying them that the department has new speech code guidelines in order to ensure “inclusive language and practice.” “Specifically, we have decided to remove the term ‘field,’ from our curriculum and practice and replace it with ‘practicum,'” the letter explained. What is so egregious about the word “field”? Well, according to the brainiacs out on the West Coast, it is offensive to black and immigrants everywhere. “Language can be powerful, and phrases such as ‘going into the field’ or ‘fieldwork’ may have connotations for descendants of slavery and immigrant workers that are not benign,” according to the letter. If a word isn’t “benign” that would mean it is malignant. Per the letter sent around, the word “field” is so malevolent that merely using it promotes “white supremacy, anti-immigrant and anti-blackness ideologies.” So, the school is beginning to put its words into action by banning the term altogether. In doing so, of course, they are unwittingly revealing their own racism by implying that only black people and immigrants work in “fields.” It doesn’t need to be said, but of course, every civilization on earth has had “fields” in one form or another and somebody who worked there. https://humanevents.com/2023/01/11/italian-mp-giorgia-meloni-mimics-desantis-sends-migrants-to-left-run-cities?utm_campaign=64487 Italian PM Giorgia Meloni Pulls a DeSantis, Sends Migrants to Left-Run Cities The government of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is facing a fierce backlash from their left-wing detractors after directing NGO ships carrying illegal migrants to ports in cities governed by pro-migration mayors, a move immediately compared to a policy ordered by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, As part of a recent security decree, authorities are now redirecting vessels that pick up migrants in the Mediterranean to ports located farther away from the search and rescue area, frequently opting for cities governed by leftist mayors. the decree has been met with opposition from the left-leaning Democratic Party and the mayors of the affected cities, both of whom argue the measures are excessive and go against the supposed advantages of mass illegal migration. However, these concerns were rubbished by Wand Ferro, the undersecretary at Italy’s Interior Ministry, who said: “The left protests because NGO ships are finally disembarking in other regions of central Italy and no longer only in the South. Evidently, on the left, they would like to transform Calabria and Sicily into the refugee camp of Europe, a completely unacceptable prospect.” Ferro stated that the asylum centers in southern Italy have faced persistent strain for years and that the government's action to alleviate that pressure amount to a necessary response. She also dismissed the criticisms from NGOs who operate the migrant transport ships, pointing out that it is not unusual for these ships to keep refugees at sea for extended periods while waiting to pick up more migrants, adding that these ships have a tendency to take migrants to European ports instead of closer ports located in North Africa. “Perhaps the left suffers from a sort of NIMBY [not in my backyard] syndrome, preaching welcome as long as it is away from their backyard,” Ferro continued. However, NGOs who help facilitate these routes of illegal migration complained in a joint statement that the policy is hindering their efforts to save stranded migrants. “Among other rules, the Italian government requires civilian rescue ships to head to Italy after each rescue immediately," the statement reads. "This delays further lifesaving operations, as ships usually carry out multiple rescues over the course of several days." The policy of the Meloni conservative government, which came to power in last October's general election, immediately drew comparisons to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who last year sent illegal migrants to the wealthy, heavily liberal island enclave of Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts. The move sparked outrage from wealthy residents, with local authorities opting to activate the National Guard in order to have the individuals quickly removed. This episode is the second in our ongoing Great Recession Generation series. It's been more than a decade since the Great Recession, the most severe economic and financial meltdown since the Great Depression, but the impact of that period in time can still be felt today. An entire generation in the architecture and construction industries was affected, some leaving the profession altogether. In light of another global, earth-shattering event, we want to take a moment to reflect on the last. This episode, we interview two people who found themselves on paths that led them away from architecture. Shawn Swisher interviews two of his fellow graduates from the University of Southern California School of Architecture: Taylor Donsker of Taylor Donsker Design (taylordonsker.com), and Margaret Tides, an attorney in the counsel's office for Placer County, California.

video: Dr. Guy Mcpherson Predicts Human Extinction by 2030  Neil Oliver: ‘By taking back control of the money we can begin regaining control of our world' Unpayable Debt & Deadly Vax Causing Hell on Earth – Ed Dowd 2 Testimonials  Trailer For : Science For Hire   Regeneration of brain stem cells boosted by turmeric compound Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine (Germany)  September 28, 2022  A bioactive compound found in turmeric promotes stem cell proliferation and differentiation in the brain, reveals new research published in the open access journal Stem Cell Research & Therapy. The findings suggest aromatic turmerone could be a future drug candidate for treating neurological disorders, such as stroke and Alzheimer's disease. The study looked at the effects of aromatic (ar-) turmerone on endogenous neutral stem cells (NSC), which are stem cells found within adult brains. NSC differentiate into neurons, and play an important role in self-repair and recovery of brain function in neurodegenerative diseases. Previous studies of ar-turmerone have shown that the compound can block activation of microglia cells. When activated, these cells cause neuroinflammation, which is associated with different neurological disorders. However, ar-turmerone's impact on the brain's capacity to self-repair was unknown.  Researchers from the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine in Jülich, Germany, studied the effects of ar-turmerone on NSC proliferation and differentiation both in vitro and in vivo. Rat fetal NSC were cultured and grown in six different concentrations of ar-turmerone over a 72 hour period. At certain concentrations, ar-turmerone was shown to increase NSC proliferation by up to 80%, without having any impact on cell death. The cell differentiation process also accelerated in ar-turmerone-treated cells compared to untreated control cells.  Lead author of the study, Adele Rueger, said: “While several substances have been described to promote stem cell proliferation in the brain, fewer drugs additionally promote the differentiation of stem cells into neurons, which constitutes a major goal in regenerative medicine. Our findings on aromatic turmerone take us one step closer to achieving this goal.”  Ar-turmerone is the lesser-studied of two major bioactive compounds found in turmeric. The other compound is curcumin, which is well known for its anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties.  Study finds mind-body practices lower blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes University of Southern California School of Medicine, September 30, 2022 Mind-body practices such as yoga and meditation are increasingly popular tools for promoting health and combating diseases, including type 2 diabetes. Approximately 66% of Americans with type 2 diabetes use mind-body practices and many do so because they believe it helps control their blood sugar. Until now, however, whether mind-practices can reduce blood glucose levels has never been rigorously quantified. According to new research conducted by a team from the Keck School of Medicine of USC, published in the Journal of Integrative and Complementary Medicine, some mind-body practices can be nearly as effective as commonly prescribed drugs at reducing blood glucose levels in people with type 2 diabetes.  The team analyzed data from randomized controlled trials conducted across the globe between 1993 and 2022. They found 28 trials in which people with type 2 diabetes began a mind-body practice in addition to receiving medication and compared their results with people who only received medication to reduce their blood sugar levels. This study, the first to analyze a range of mind-body practices including meditation, qigong, yoga and mindfulness-based stress reduction and their effect on blood glucose levels, revealed that all mind-body practices led to significant reductions in blood sugar levels.  Taken as a whole, the mind-body practices averaged a .84% reduction in hemoglobin A1c, a measure of the average blood glucose level for the past 3 months. Yoga, the most-studied modality, provided the largest benefit, about a 1% reduction in hemoglobin A1c. The authors noted that a 1% reduction is particularly notable because metformin, the most prescribed diabetes drug, reduces hemoglobin A1c in people with type 2 diabetes by 1.1% on average.  The research suggests that mind-body practices could be used as a both as a complementary nonpharmacological treatment for people with type 2 diabetes and possibly as a preventive measure as well.   Compound in Celery Found to Destroy 86% of Lung Cancer CellsGuangdong Pharmaceutical University (China),   September 28th, 2022 Celery ihas been found to be extremely effective at killing ovarian, pancreatic, prostate, breast, liver, and lung cancer cells. In fact, in a recent study, celery killed up to 86% of cancer cells in the lungs (in vitro). In addition to calming your nervous system, aiding digestion, reducing inflammation, and lowering blood pressure, celery also contains an anti-cancer compound called apigenin, which has been effective at causing apoptosis (cell suicide) in numerous types of cancer cells. Researchers in China have found that by eating just two medium stalks of celery 2 to 3 times a week can reduce the risk of getting lung cancer by 60%. It is still not definitive through the scientists research, however, if the apigenin alone does the work of killing cancerous cells or if they work in cooperation with other compounds found in celery Furthering the link, other research found: “Apigenin widely inhibits cell proliferation of various lung cancer cell lines in a dose-dependent manner and the combination treatment of apigenin and antitumor drugs is very effective in human lung cancer cells, and Nrf2-ARE pathway may contribute to the mechanism.” And another study's abstract focusing on the broader impact of fruit and vegetable intake on cancer concluded: “In particular, high intake of Chinese cabbage (OR = 0.53), chives (OR = 0 .54), carrots (OR = 0.51) and celery (OR = 0.40) was inversely associated with lung cancer. The OR was more than six-fold elevated for smokers reporting low intake of vegetables, and more than four-fold elevated for smokers reporting low intake of fruit, as compared with never smokers reporting high intake of these items.  Moderate alcohol use linked to heart chamber damage, atrial fibrillation in new studyUniversity of California, San Francisco September 28, 2022  A study by UC San Francisco researchers found that even moderate alcohol consumption may change the structure of the heart in ways that increase the risk of atrial fibrillation. “There's growing evidence that moderate alcohol intake may be a risk factor for atrial fibrillation, the most common heart rhythm disturbance in the world, but the mechanism by which alcohol may lead to atrial fibrillation is unknown,” said Gregory Marcus, MD, endowed professor of atrial fibrillation research at UCSF and senior author of the study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association. Marcus and colleagues looked at damage to the left atrium of the heart as a possible pathway between alcohol and atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation is a known risk factor for stroke. The irregular pumping of blood can lead to blood clots, which may travel to the brain and cause stroke. The researchers evaluated data from more than 5,000 adults collected over several years in the Framingham Heart Study, including echocardiograms, medical history and self-reported alcohol intake. The study participants, mostly white and in their 40s to 60s, reported on average just over one drink per day. The overall rate of atrial fibrillation in the group was 8.4 cases per 1,000 people per year – meaning over a 10-year period, eight out of 100 people were likely to develop atrial fibrillation. Every additional drink per day was associated with a 5 percent increase in the yearly risk. Every additional drink per day also was associated with a statistically significant 0.16 millimeter enlargement of the left atrium, highlighting a possible site of physical damage caused by drinking   Ginger effective for muscle pain relief University of Georgia,  Sep 29, 2022 A new study has suggested that daily doses of raw or heat-treated ginger are effective for relieving muscle pain following strenuous exercise.  Some research has shown that ginger may have anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties similar to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.  In one study, four to 36 weeks of daily ginger doses (30 to 500 mg.) achieved reductions in knee pain from osteoarthritis.  Researchers from the University of Georgia examined the efficacy of multiple days of ginger doses for relieving experimentally induced muscle pain from 18 eccentric muscle exercises.  For the study, student volunteers were tested on 11 consecutive days while taking ginger supplements. Seventy-four students were divided in three groups given either raw ginger, heated ginger or placebo.  The authors hypothesized that pain ratings after exercise would be lower in the ginger group compared to placebo subjects.  Results from the subjects' responses data showed that both raw and heat-treated ginger lowered muscle pain intensity after eccentric exercise by 25 and 23 per cent, respectively.  Heat treating ginger, therefore, did not increase the analgesic benefit.   Whether ground, instant or decaffeinated, coffee drinking associated with longer life Baker Heart and Diabetes Research Institute (Australia), September 28 2022.  Regardless of the type of coffee consumed, people who drink coffee may live longer, as indicated by research findings reported in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology. “In this large, observational study, ground, instant and decaffeinated coffee were associated with equivalent reductions in the incidence of cardiovascular disease and death from cardiovascular disease or any cause,” senior author Peter Kistler, PhD, stated.  The study included 449,563 men and women enrolled in the UK Biobank, which recruited UK residents from 2006 to 2010 and collected data concerning dietary intake, including coffee consumed, and other factors. Individuals included in the current investigation did not have cardiovascular disease or heart arrhythmias at the beginning of the study.  During an average follow-up of 12.5 years, 27,809 deaths occurred. Compared with non-coffee drinkers, people who reported drinking ground, instant or decaffeinated coffee had a significantly lower risk of dying from all causes during follow-up. The greatest risk reduction was associated with drinking 2 to 3 cups coffee per day, with ground coffee associated with 27% lower risk compared with no coffee drinking. Drinking any type of coffee was also associated with a reduced chance of developing cardiovascular disease, and 2 to 3 cups was again associated with the most protection. The development of arrhythmias was less among people who consumed ground or instant coffee, but not decaffeinated coffee.  “The beverage contains more than 100 biologically active components,” Dr Kistler remarked. “It is likely that the non-caffeinated compounds were responsible for the positive relationships observed between coffee drinking, cardiovascular disease and survival. Our findings indicate that drinking modest amounts of coffee of all types should not be discouraged but can be enjoyed as a heart healthy behavior.”
