"Give Outdoor Learning" is a first of its kind, statewide campaign that creates nature-based outings for the public. And because many programs are at risk due to budget cuts, it's also a fundraising campaign similar to Colorado Gives Day. CPR's Jenny Brundin speaks with an organizer from the Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education and two young adults who share how nature has changed them. Then, five years after a state law took effect, why is it still a challenge to track use of force by Colorado law enforcement? And later, sorting out senior living options with Aging Matters.

Okay, so this week we're talking about one of the most powerful tools we have out there for our focus, our mental health, our community, our families, our children, ourselves - music! We don't even realize how much music plays a role in our lives. And luckily, gone are the days of believing we must work in sterile, silent environments - many (or dare I say most?) brains, including those with ADHD and other EF challenges, truly benefit from some kind of stimulation while doing focused work. The power of music has been studied by researchers so if you'd like to learn more, I've shared some articles in the show notes. But one of the best resources I can recommend is a new book out called Resonant Minds. Written by a daughter and father pair, Sara and Mort Sherman, this book covers all aspects of music - from its impact on the brain and learning, including as a mindfulness practice or as Sara and Mort call it “mindful action”, to its positive impact on individuals and community. I sat down with Sara and Mort to learn about music and share stories about how music has impacted us and others and about, as Sara and Mort say, that music is ultimately about love. Sara and Mort are so uniquely qualified to write this book so I asked them to introduce themselves, and the book Resonant Minds is such a unique book that I knew it was only right for them to describe it, so let's get on with the show! Here are the show notes from today's episode:Learn More About Sara Shermanhttps://mozartformunchkins.com/Learn More About Morthttps://my.aasa.org/AASA/Resources/SAMag/Sep16/InsideSherman.aspxResonant Minds bookhttps://mozartformunchkins.com/resonant-minds-the-transformative-power-of-music-one-note-at-a-time/https://www.resonantminds.comResearch on Music and the BrainMelody for the Mind: Enhancing Mood, Motivation, Concentration, and Learning through Music Listening in the Classroomhttps://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/20592043231214085Keep Your Brain Young with Musichttps://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/wellness-and-prevention/keep-your-brain-young-with-musicThe transformative power of music: Insights into neuroplasticity, health, and diseasehttps://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10765015/The Youth Orchestra Hannah mentioned: https://gctyo.org/Learn More About Our MAP Programhttps://map.worksmartcoaching.comLearn More About 1:1 Coachinghttps://www.beyondbooksmart.com/how-it-worksGet in Touchpodcast@beyondbooksmart.comInstagram/Facebook/Tiktok: @beyondbooksmartcoachingwww.beyondbooksmart.com

Joshua 10:1-15 | Mike Clarensau | One thing to keep in mind as we read through Joshua is that the Lord is carrying out his judgment on the people in the land. Sometimes God uses man as his sword, but he is more than capable of carrying out his offensives without us. The focus of this passage is not on the martial might of Israel calling in the heavenly artillery by summoning a deity to fight for them. The Lord himself throws hailstones down on the Amorites, and most of the fallen were from his hand, not Israel's. Whatever the Amorites did, it must have been pretty bad for God to make fresh stones just for their stoning. His ways are higher, and his knowledge is greater than ours. We must trust His righteousness in that time, also the text itself says that “there has been no day like it before or since, when the Lord heeded the voice of a man, for the Lord fought for Israel.” This makes it clear that ascribing something this clear-cut of God's “smiting” of a people is something that we can't do in our modern context.

What if your greatest challenges were actually your most profound teachers?  In this soul-stirring conversation, educator and writer Daphne Gregory-Thomas weaves together the threads of loss, resilience, and transformation through her journey as an innovative educator, cancer survivor, and storyteller. Her narrative illuminates how life's greatest challenges often become our most profound teachers, from early maternal loss to creating groundbreaking educational programs for students with learning differences, and ultimately facing her own mortality through cancer diagnosis and recovery.  Through her raw authenticity and deep wisdom, Daphne reveals how staying open to life's lessons - whether they come from students, strangers on New York City streets, or her own healing journey - has shaped her understanding of purpose and meaning. Her story reminds us that every moment holds the potential for transformation if we remain receptive to the teachers who appear in unexpected forms, from classroom students to cancer diagnoses, each offering their unique wisdom for those willing to listen.  Daphne Gregory-Thomas is an essayist and educational innovator who spent 45 years as a high school educator in the New York/New Jersey area, specializing in programs for students with learning differences. After retiring and overcoming two cancer diagnoses, she became a patient-to-patient volunteer at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and discovered her voice as a writer through their Visible Ink program. A passionate advocate for authentic living and self-advocacy, Daphne's work focuses on finding wisdom in life's challenges and staying open to unexpected teachers. Dave Lauer was enjoying a life many would be envious of: a successful career in education, a loving family, apparent good health that left him strong enough to play competitive baseball in his 50's. In late 2023, much changed with a sudden and surprising diagnosis of a brain tumor. While Dave's life has changed, he's taking notes of his reflections and leffons and offers them in his book, Glad To Be here. We've got a special one for you today. Brian Proctor, son of the iconic Bob Proctor, joins me for an open and insightful conversation about personal growth and transformation. Brian shares the wisdom he's picked up along the way, and let me tell you—it's way more than just setting and hitting goals. It's about the person you become through the journey. We also tackle some big topics, like how to embrace abundance, push past limiting beliefs, and trust your gut. Let's go deeper. On today's episode of The CLS Experience, we have a very powerful treat. Born into a legacy of personal development by his father, Bob Proctor, he has been a pivotal figure in the evolution of online marketing and business development within the personal growth industry, Just to name a few. He had the privilege of working alongside his father as he taught from some of the world's largest stages, and for 60 years they were best friends. While working with his Dad, he found his niche in marketing and business development, and I don't think anyone does it better, BIG facts. From the early days of the internet, he has harnessed the power of email marketing to build a global platform for his father's teachings, revolutionizing how motivational content is shared worldwide. His knack for creating meaningful connections and leveraging digital strategies propelled their message across the globe, which I deeply admire. He's a testament to the power of enduring partnerships, innovative thinking, and the relentless pursuit of personal and professional growth. Lew Bryson is on the show this week. He's a long-time writer in the beer and whisky space, a voice of reason, and honestly just a force of good and positivity in an otherwise dreary world.I've been fortunate to call  Bryson a friend for the better part of 20 years now. As a writer starting off in the beer space he was one of a few that was generous with his time, advice, and expertise. That's not a unique to me experience. Lew has helped so many better understand drinks and culture.  He's kind and intelligent with the kind of resume that can only come with being among the very best. He was managing editor of Whisky Advocate magazine for 20 years. He is the author of Tasting Whiskey, and Whiskey Master Class, and writes a column for Craft Spirits Magazine.  His work has appeared in countless publications, including a long stint in All About Beer.  Bryson is a Kentucky Colonel, and a member of The Order of The Writ, an honorary association of the bourbon industry.  He lives in central Pennsylvania, which is the topic of his podcast, “Seen Through A Glass." – a show you should tune into regularly.  A few months back we were approached by Rich Colli of Varga Bar to do an event for Philly Beer Week. It was great fun, pouring and talking about whisky and beer. Before all that we sat down at Victory Brewing in Philly, to talk about writing, careers, home bars, and more.  For more Drink Beer, Think Beer check out All About Beer.Host: John HollGuests: Lew BrysonSponsors: All About BeerTags: Lager, Whisky, Home Bars, BooksPhoto by John Holl

If it looks like there is a mutual fit, you'll have the opportunity to attend one of our upcoming member events as a guest. 2. Become a Full-Cycle Investor: There are many self-proclaimed genius investors today who think everything they touch turns to gold. But they're about to learn the hard way what others have gained through “expensive” experience. Have you ever wondered why your dog or cat seems to know when you're having a bad day? Why is it that my pup is so comforting when things are going sideways? Is it part of their DNA?Our guest today, Bill Robertson, is the author of a new book, "Uncle Bill's Animal Tales - Life Lessons for Adults". Bill's book is about his experiences with animals and how he feels they are our greatest teachers & healers. Bill heard from a psychic in Ghana, years back, who believed that the pecking order of consciousness on the planet is 1. Trees, 2. Animals, and 3. Human Beings. Why is Number 3 constantly trying to overtake 1 & 2? In 1997 Bill got clean & sober, and on the show, he tells about how his cat helped him to wake-up and put down the drugs & booze, and that his two dogs since then have helped keep him sober. Bill is from Boston originally where he worked in corporate America for many years, and ran a sketch comedy show out of Boston & NY called “Heavily Medicated Fairy Tales.” He has written for a kids' show on PBS, sold two scripts to Lifetime, and wrote and produced a feature film, “Paradise, a Town of Sinners & Saints” based on a musical comedy that he produced in LA and Austin, TX to rave reviews and sold-out houses. Also on the show, Bill reveals what it was like to come out as gay to his family, friends, and co-workers, and offers advice to those facing similar challenges. Here are some questions we discussed with Bill:Q. The subject of your book is fascinating. What was going on in your life before your cat and dogs intervened?Q. You write in the promo copy for your book on Amazon that animals can be our best healers and teachers. Exactly what did they do to help you get clean and sober?Q. How can our listeners recognize their connection with animals in the home, and in nature as well?Q. Do you have any advice for people who do not have pets in their home, but are dealing with stress and anxiety, or challenges to overcome, as you did with alcohol and drugs?Q. Where did the “Uncle Bill” come from in the book's title? Q. You had a career in corporate America before aging out when you turned 60. Exactly what did you do?Q. After you retired from your job, you quickly shifted to focusing on the arts – film, theatre, writing…how did you do that?Q. On your Facebook page, you posted this quote: “Living life to the fullest is taking chances, allowing yourself to be vulnerable, and knowing that it's all part of the journey for the greater good.” Please explain that.Q. There's also a great pic of you and Tucker. Who is Tucker? What's he mean to you?Q. Who was Sophie? On Facebook, you say she was one of the reasons you wrote your book.Q. You recently appeared on a podcast that was billed as “How to Never Stop Being Yourself, Unapologetic Coming Out Expert.” Can you talk about your “coming out” experience?Q. Advice for others facing the same situation?Q. Are the challenges facing the queer community worsening these days, and if so, why?Q. You have a new book in the works. Can you tell us about that?Q. Where can people find your books and how can they connect with you?Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-lean-to-the-left-podcast--4719048/support.

It looks like a boulder. You're never gonna get around it. But if you take that same pebble and you put it out at arm's length and then you look at it, you're like, well, it's just a pebble. I could get around that thing”Larry's mother's battle with cancer instilled a level of fight and battle in him. He also shares how his brother-in-law's suicide reinforced the idea that life is short and that if we're not healthy, the outcomes could be detrimental.
