In Trump vs Universities, Students Are Stuck In The Middle

What A Day

Play Episode Listen Later May 1, 2025 23:24

In his first 100 days in office, President Donald Trump has fundamentally reshaped the federal government's relationship with many of the nation's most revered universities. Schools are finding themselves in an unwinnable fight: either capitulate to Trump's authoritarian-esq demands or lose millions – even billions – in federal funding. Some schools, like Columbia, have already caved. Others, like Harvard, have been more defiant. Either way, the impact is not theoretical, and current students are feeling it acutely. Nathan Elias, editor and chief of the University of Southern California's student newspaper paper the Daily Trojan, tells us what he's hearing from his fellow students. And in headlines: The U.S. economy shrunk in the first few months of the year, Trump admitted he ‘could' bring back a man wrongfully deported to El Salvador, and the Supreme Court appears ready to green light religious public charter schools.Show Notes:Check out the Daily Trojan – https://dailytrojan.com/Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday

#31: Ben was Seattle Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll's right hand man. From a University of Southern California walk on to the NFL sidelines Ben shares his story of faith & purpose. As a student at USC Ben wrote for the Daily Trojan. He was focused on pursing a career in journalism. What started as a good idea about documenting what it was like to go through walk on tryouts for the USC football team turned into even more than what he imagined. Ben made the team. This was at the prime of the USC football dynasty in the 2000's. Throughout his time at USC Ben connected and developed a relationship with Coach Pete Carroll. It led to an opportunity to work on the USC football staff and then with Coach Carroll to the Seattle Seahawks. In Ben's book "Walk On" (From Pee Wee Dropout to the Sidelines - My Unlikely Story of Football, Purpose, and Following an Amazing God) he talks about "the nudge". He shares that every time he gets the nudge from God of stepping out in faith he tries to take it. In the show you will see how many times he has done just that and in the moment he didn't see the results that he thought he would. However, God has bigger and better plans. From his own experiences you will see how sometimes it is not the momentary results, but the courage and diligence to act and follow God's nudge in your life, even when you can't see the outcome. For more info on Ben Malcolmson check out https://benmalcolmson.com/His Book - Walk On (also being turned into a movie)Enjoy the show!

In 1942, President FDR signed executive order 9066, forcing Japanese American citizens into internment camps. Many of those interned citizens were students at USC.One of them, Setsuko Matsunaga Nishi, was an extremely outspoken advocate for Japanese American rights. She wrote several opinion articles to the Daily Trojan in the three months between Pearl Harbor and her internment, aiming to highlight the dedication she and other Nisei had to defending America. “We are real Americans. What else could we be? American born, American educated, loving American tolerance, justice, and equality,” she wrote. Nishi also wired a telegram directly to president FDR himself, just days before he signed executive order 9066. In her telegram, she called the president’s actions an “undemocratic curtailment of constitutional rights and civil liberties.”Tim Yuge, whose uncle Hitoshi Sageshima was also interned during his time at USC, gives us context as to why it was particularly devastating to first generation Japanese Americans for their kids to be forced out of school. Of the 121 Nisei students interned during their time at USC, none were welcome back after their release.

As we often say on the show, if you haven't had a strange, paranormal experience, it's likely someone you know has.  This happens to be the case with two college friends of Forrest, Dan Povenmire and Susan Lambert.  In the mid-1980s, Susan was working as a reporter for the student newspaper of The University of Southern California, The Daily Trojan.  She had asked Dan if he wanted to accompany her to an interview with a movie director.  They set out on a drive that should only have taken no more than 40 minutes to complete.  But upon arriving at the hotel where the director was giving interviews, learned that they were somehow almost two hours late.  This seeming impossibility has baffled Dan ever since and fueled a search for answers.  But to add to the mystery, this wouldn't be the only unexplainable experience of missing time, as the pair would encounter another episode during a subsequent car ride together.  And like with the first trip, each would remember a few odd sights during it that the other didn't recall.  While unexplainable disruptions in time are rare, many people have reported experiencing a disturbing wrinkle in the fabric of time which we trust should always be smooth.  Just what is going on when something so seemingly fixed and unalterable as the passage of time fluctuates?  In the latter portion of the show, writer, field researcher, and podcaster Micah Hanks joins us for a discussion on some possible theories as to what might be happening scientifically with the phenomenon of Missing Time.
