The All Blacks start a test match on Saturday under coach Scott Robertson with someone other than Damian McKenzie at first-five for the first time. Beauden Barrett will instead run the cutter against the Wallabies at Sky Stadium, his first start at No. 10 since 2022, with a former All Black playmaker saying that should remain the case as he doesn't see McKenzie as being at the level of an international first-five. Carlos Spencer made 35 test appearances in black and only five players have scored more points for the All Blacks than him. A player of similar style to McKenzie with a prized ability to unlock defences through innovative plays, he tells Newstalk ZB's Jason Pine he sees the 29-year-old as better suited to fullback. “I almost feel a little bit sorry for him to be honest. It's been a tough little road for him, obviously on the back of a team that probably hasn't performed to its potential and unfortunately it's usually the No. 10 that takes most of the stick. “I've always considered Damian as a better fullback than a No.10.”Spencer says McKenzie's Super Rugby form in the position is evident but does not see him as a test-level first-five. “Personally, no. I don't think he is. I think he's great at Super level but when it comes to test matches I just don't think he's got what it takes to be a really assertive No. 10 unfortunately. “I like Damian McKenzie, I think he's a great player but I just find that he's better suited at fullback than 10.”More time and space on the ball that is found when playing with 15 on his back, rather than 10, is what Spencer says makes McKenzie more suited to fullback. “He's got more time to make decisions, there's a bit more space, he enters the line well. I think he can see more from at the back. “That doesn't stop him from jumping into first receiver occasionally from fullback, but I think those are the biggest points. I think he just lacks that direction at test match level where it's really important.” LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There will be no excuses for timed-out kicks at goal at Eden Park on Saturday.   As the All Blacks host England for the second test in the series there will be a 60-second shot clock displayed on the big screen and the television broadcast, that will signal how much time a kicker has to take their shot at goal.   It comes after All Blacks first-five Damian McKenzie was deemed by referee to have taken longer than the time limit when lining up a penalty kick in the first test in Dunedin.   With just three minutes remaining in the match, the All Blacks won a penalty and captain Scott Barrett pointed towards the posts signalling they would like a shot at three points. Three points that would have given the All Blacks a four-point buffer with barely enough time for England to kick-off.   The clock begins when the captain points towards the posts for a shot at goal and this rule is not unknown to players as it was the same rule used in Super Rugby Pacific this year.  “The kick must be taken within 60 seconds (playing time) from the time the team indicated their intention to do so, even if the ball rolls over and has to be placed again. Sanction: Kick is disallowed and a scrum is awarded,” the law states.  Where confusion arose for McKenzie was that his only means of knowing how much time he had left was communication from the referee.  The referee blew his whistle and signalled that McKenzie had taken longer than the allocated 60 seconds and England were given possession back. The All Blacks' player maker's blushes were saved as the All Blacks held on to record a 16-15 victory but the incident sparked debate as to whether communication from the referee was enough clarity.  Eden Park CEO Nick Sautner told Andrew Dickens the clock is linked to the referee, so it's an operational matter for NZR and the TMO.  He said that testing has been done to accommodate any and all of the three screens in the grounds.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This was a very good test match.I watched the Wallabies play Wales last night when I got back to my room, and the intensity, skill level and ferocity of the contest was nowhere near what we saw in Dunedin.England are a proper rugby side, one that came within a point of reaching the Rugby World Cup final, that beat Ireland in the Six Nations, and that very nearly beat the All Blacks in New Zealand last night for just the third time in their history, and the first time in 21 years. We knew what their strengths were -close, combative, one-off rugby with ball in hand, and a smothering defence designed to deny the All Blacks any space to weave their magic in midfield. That leaves gaps out wide and certainly Sevu Reece's try came from the tactic designed to combat that, the cross-field kick. But England were also expansive when the occasion presented itself, way more than I expected them to be.I was so impressed with the general play of England first-five Marcus Smith, he's a true triple-threat with ball in hand - he can kick, pass or run as the fancy takes him.The only blot on his copy book last night was his goal kicking, he left 8 points out there, and in a 1-point game, that is obviously not great. Maro Itoje was also excellent for England, a good try and a constant physicality around the field that caught the eye. Best on park for the All Blacks for me was Patrick Tuipulotu. It's incredible to think he was in major doubt for this series, but his all-round play, accuracy in his core roles, ball carries, lineout takes and strong tackling was just excellent. The obvious talking point though is Damian McKenzie's penalty attempt being timed out. The rule is that from the moment you signal your intent to take a kick at goal; you have 60 seconds for the kick to be taken.I think we're probably all OK with the rule. It's designed to stop time wasting, especially late in the games. But surely there needs to be a shot clock on the big screen, a visual cue for the kicker and for us in the crowd.Every other sport that uses shot clocks of varying degrees- basketball with its 24 seconds to take a shot, tennis for serves, cricket for DRS reviews, anything where there is a time limit for something to happen - has a visual demonstration of that on the big screen at the venue. Why wasn't there one there last night? There simply must be a visual indicator for the 60 seconds it's an absolute no-brainer. Don't be surprised to see a shot clock on the screen at Eden Park next weekend. To give Damian McKenzie his due, he didn't complain afterwards. He owned it, and said he has to make adjustments.I've watched it back and timed it, and the referee is bang on with his timing, from the moment he points to the posts to indicate the kick, it's exactly 60 seconds before he blows again for the timed-out call. It took about 20 seconds to get the tee out, and Damian McKenzie doesn't have the ball on the tee until 40 seconds. From there, he was also up against the clock, and so it proved.
