Back in October, before the 2024 election, we had on our friend—and brilliant screenwriter and playwright—Dorothy Fortenberry to talk about gender and the presidential campaign. Amid all the postmortems and Democratic soul searching, we wanted to have Dorothy back on to revisit some of those questions, starting with the difficulties women face in running as "outsiders" or against "The System"—an especially relevant consideration given the prevailing anti-incumbent, burn-it-down sentiment among voters across Europe and the Americas. Along the way we discuss Sarah Palin, Trump's "bad sex" cabinet and administration, how "having fun" is coded in American culture, and more.Sources:Dorothy Fortenberry, "The J.D. This conversation is a little different. We thought that exploring the life of, say, Russell Kirk might not be the best way to spend the weeks before such a consequential election, so this is the first of of a few episodes that won't be about a text or a life, but about the 2024 elections—hopefully digging a little deeper than most, and with a special concern for the themes and topics of Know Your Enemy. To help us get started, we had on a great friend of the podcast, playwright and screenwriter Dorothy Fortenberry, to talk about a presidential campaign that "smacks of gender," from declining sperm counts to abortion to the lives of moms, dads, and children today. In short, it's an unguarded discussion of how we can better care for each other in a world that's making it harder and harder to do just thatSources:Dorothy Fortenberry, "The J.D. We are living in an era of rapid change - for example in our technology, social movements, and the environment. These changes influence our mental health and are themselves influenced by our usual ways of thinking and feeling about the world - our habits of mind. On this episode, we see what we can learn about what makes for a mentally healthy society by exploring one big change we are all going through - climate change. Our guest is Daniel Sherrell, an organizer who passed landmark climate justice legislation in New York and who now works to address climate change in Australia. Dan is the author of Warmth: Coming of Age at the End of our World, which is written as a letter to an imagined future child about how it feels to visualize a future and a family under the weight of climate change.

Much of the globe has seen record-breaking temperatures in recent heat waves that seem increasingly routine. Dhruv Khullar, a contributor and a practicing physician, looks at the effects of extreme heat in India, where the capital, New Delhi, recorded a temperature this year of 122 degrees. “People are amazingly resilient,” he notes. “But I think we're approaching that point where even the most resilient people, the type of lives that they have to live—because of climate change—are not going to be sustainable for very much longer.” And the climate activist Daniel Sherrell talks about his book “Warmth: Coming of Age at the End of the World” with Ngofeen Mputubwele. The book articulates Sherrell's view that we can live now only by walking a tightrope between hope and despair.

In this episode, which originally aired on February 17th, 2022, I reflect on some of the ideas presented in the 2021 book, Warmth: Coming of Age at the End of Our World, by Daniel Sherrell. Warmth is a memoir in the form of a letter to Sherrell's as-yet-unborn child, about his climate change activism and his emotional reckoning with everything "the Problem" implies, including the ethics of bringing a child into this rapidly changing, increasingly dangerous world.

Reflecting on the recent self-immolation of climate activist Wynn Bruce as a protest and call to action in the face of climate change, Thomas and Panu discuss the importance of bearing witness to emotionally difficult events. In the teaching of systems thinker, Joanna Macy, they acknowledge both the difficulty and value of staying open to the world even when it is painful and seemingly impossible. Inspired by the writings of Daniel Sherrell in his book Warmth, they reflect on the importance of not reducing all of our climate feelings “into their utility for the movement,” but rather allowing some to exist solely unto themselves.

How do we live in this tenuous space as the future of our planet lies in the balance - and the signs of the Great Acceleration increase every day? What do we owe the next generation?Julie Ann's ConsciousSHIFT guest Daniel Sherrell - Bestselling author of WARMTH: Coming of Age at the End of Our World - himself a youth organizer in the climate movement, argues compellingly that we must balance grief and action. We have seen the devastation wrought by climate change skyrocket, as detailed in the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Report ("Climate change widespread, rapid, and intensifying"). We have braced ourselves as hurricanes and fires rip through cities and across forests, watched droughts trigger mass migrations, and mourned the extinction of species after species, never to be seen again. We know what causes climate change and what we need to do to combat it, but until now we have not had an outlet for our fears and anxieties regarding what Daniel Sherrell refers to as “the Problem.”WARMTH goes to the heart of the defining question of our time:How do we go on in a world that may not?Join Julie Ann and Daniel for a new conversation about climate change: not what it is or how we solve it, but the emotional terrain of the crisis, and how it feels to imagine a future, and our relationships to the planet, to hope, and to each other.Julie Ann Turner's ConsciousSHIFT with Julie Ann Turner Radio Show is broadcast worldwide to more than 980,000+ global followers and growing, where Julie Ann interviews the visionaries leading Conscious SHIFT unfolding across the globe - like Marianne Williamson, Seth Godin, Dan Pink, Adam Grant, Don Miguel Ruiz, and more - as we all realize we are the only ones who can consciously choose to CREATE the world we wish to see

"If we continue to power our economy with fossil fuels, human civilization will not be able to be sustained long-term or perhaps even through the end of the century." Millennial climate organizer Daniel Sherrell is here, with a new book in tow. He and Daniel talk climate, his passion for activism, what is really happening to our world, and what the average person can do if they feel so compelled. His book, Warmth: Coming of Age at the End of Our World is described as "a new kind of book about climate change: not what it is or how we solve it, but how it feels to imagine a future–and a family–under its weight.” It is a personal book, filled with passion and rage, and in this conversation Daniel articulates how his love for planet earth— the seasons, the coastlines, the people, the biodiversity— drives his ambition to make a difference while he still can. Crews and locals on Evia island, and other parts of Greece, continue to battle blazes burning through thousands of acres of forested and residential areas. As other countries step in with support, many Greeks say they feel abandoned by their own government. And, a new UN report says the Earth will likely blow past the 1.5 Celsius mark by the 2030s, a goal set by the Paris agreement to minimize global warming. This will drastically escalate the negative impacts of climate change in the next few decades. Also, we hear from Daniel Sherrell, whose new book, “Warmth,” addresses how it truly feels to face the magnitude of the global climate emergency.

OK. "Waiting for the End of the World" is an Elvis Costello song that I can't play on the air if I want to avoid another copyright strike. But it's where my mind immediately went when I heard the title of climate activist Daniel Sherrell's book, "Warm: Coming of Age at the End of the World." The title also brings to mind an inner argument I've been waging with myself for years: knowing what we do about the coming effects of climate change, why would anyone bring another new life into the world? It's just one of many things we'll discuss when he joins me for the second half hour of the show. We'll begin with a correction! I got a big fact wrong yesterday, so I'll correct the record. Then we'll talk about the news and the issues plaguing us today.. And then we'll worry about the end of the world. I'll end with REM's "It's the End of the World as We Know It"... playing in my mind, anyway. No violations today!

In this episode Matt Crawford speaks with author Daniel Sherrell about his book Warmth. A very interesting take on climate change, Sherrell is brutally honest about the affect his work in this field has had on him. Imagining future generations and what we will leave them in such an intimate way is what makes this such a powerful read. We also have a great chat about the climate fight and where Sherrell stands on some of the issues. A great conversation that I think all would love to hop in on. I hope you all do!
