“The capitalist system is necessarily built on creating ecological crises.” Bertie speaks to Ståle Holgersen about his new book Against the Crisis: Economy and Ecology in a Burning World, in which he argues that, contrary to popular economic thought, economic crises are not triggered by ecological ones but instead the capitalist economy benefits from ecological crises. Bertie and Ståle discuss the ways in which crises are defined, the drawbacks to arguments for degrowth and the potential solutions to the climate emergency. Ståle Holgersen is a Senior Lecturer in Human Geography at Stockholm University and a member of the Zetkin Collective, an ecosocialist group of scholars and activists primarily working on the political ecologies of the far right.Against the Crisis was published last month and is available to buy from Verso here.Further reading:Read an extract from Against the Crisis on Land and Climate Review. A fire broke out in October of this year at Lamentation Mountain in Berlin. It took officials weeks to contain the brushfires. The Connecticut National Guard borrowed helicopters to dump more than 100,000 gallons of water on the fire. While attempting to fight the fire, tragically, Wethersfield volunteer firefighter Robert Sharkevich Sr. died. Sharkevich was riding a utility task vehicle on one of the mountain trails when it rolled over. The recent brush fires in Connecticut are forcing us to face the state of our changing climate and prepare for a future where wildfires could become more normal in our region. John Vaillant, author of the 2023 book, Fire Weather: On the Front Lines of a Burning World recently penned an op-ed in the New York Times entitled “Ladies and Gentlemen, the Northeast Is Burning.” He'll join us today to react to the recent wildfires, and talk about what we can do to prepare. How do we expand our perspectives on resourcing? How might we become an embodiment of the resources we wish to see in the world? How do maintain active, grounded hope in a burning world? The theme for October is Embodying The Resource. In the midst of unexpected losses and unprecedented pain, how do we maintain connection to our spirit as a resource? In this episode, I share some contemplations for us to return to throughout the month. October 2024 starts with an annular solar eclipse in Libra. How can we develop emotional resilience when the news reminds us that the world is on fire? In today's episode, Peter and Brandon sit down on the back porch to chat about some suggestions for navigating the morning news without panicking. We begin with a compassionate diagnosis for why we find ourselves pulled into the chaotic current of news and media. Our introduction centers on the concept of our attention and why it's so valuable. We then walk through 3 steps of developing resilience: Acceptance, Perspective, and Connection. We pray this episode graciously points you to Jesus! In this episode, we are joined by Ajay Chaudhary to discuss his book The Exhausted of the Earth: Politics in a Burning World and the political, economic, and affective sites of exhaustion reproduced through climate degradation. We examine the expanding colonial relations of what Chaudhary calls the “extractive circuit” between the both the Global South and Global North as well as widening segments of the working classes in the Global North. We dispel fantasies of both the hope that climate change will automatically unify a coherent politics for a just transition and the fear of a human apocalypse. Given this, what would a left-wing climate realism look like as opposed to burgeoning forms of right-wing climate realism that aims to extract and protect as much wealth as possible for a vanishingly small minority? Much of our conversation concerns the role of temporality in our politics and the imperative not to wait for the future to solve our climate crises. Turns out waiting for Greta Thunberg to solve all our problems is a poor strategy!leftofphilosophy.com | @leftofphilthebrooklyninstitute.com | @materialist_jew References:Ajay Singh Chaudhary, “We're Not in This Together,” The Baffler (2020) https://thebaffler.com/salvos/were-not-in-this-together-chaudharyAjay Singh Chaudhary, The Exhausted of the Earth: Politics in a Burning World (London: Repeater Books, 2024).Music:“Vintage Memories” by Schematist | schematist.bandcamp.com“My Space” by Overu | https://get.slip.stream/KqmvAN

Abby and Patrick welcome Ajay Singh Chaudhary, Executive Director of the Brooklyn Institute for Social Research and author of The Exhausted of the Earth: Politics in a Burning World. In our conversation, Ajay breaks down competing left- and right-wing versions of climate “realism” and how fantasy, cynicism, and opportunism explain the gaps between carbon goals in treaties, optimistic projections, and the grim facts on the ground. But as Ajay argues, contemporary capitalism mines far more than just fossil fuels: it taps psychic resources, too. Drawing on Fanon, a major influence on his work, Ajay explains how material and libidinal forces conspire to ensnare us in an “extractive circuit,” how the packaging of “resilience” mystifies exploitation, and how exhaustion itself might serve as a political force and touchstone for solidarity. Host Bob St.Pierre is joined Ben Wheeler, a Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever wildlife biologist and prescribed fire expert from Nebraska, for a conversation with author Maura O'Connor. The discussion focuses on O'Connor's new book, Ignition, which is subtitled “Lighting Fires in a Burning World.” The trio talk about the importance of prescribed fire for wildlife habitat, as well as the importance of regular burning of prairies and forests to prevent massive wildfires. Episode Highlights: • Wheeler recounts famed biologist Herbert Stoddard's advocacy for fire as a critically important wildlife habitat management tool, as well as Stoddard's dubbing of the bobwhite quail as “the fire bird.” • O'Connor explains the role prescribed fire plays in protecting grasslands from woody encroachment, mitigating climate change, and protecting water resources. This month's episode welcomes Reykjavik based Australian producer, composer, and sound artist @BenFrost. Early albums like Theory of Machines, By The Throat, and Solaris established Ben Frost as a frontrunner in conceptual, boundary-pushing, and sometimes aggressive electronic music — echoed in his earth shaking live performances, which themselves are celebrations of spine tingling bass frequencies and volume. Not for the faint of heart, his music is inspired by punk rock guitar, minimalism, and in the case of his most recent album, heavy metal, often eschewing storytelling altogether in favour of a visceral, physical musical experience. And yet, his work in film and TV scoring, dance, and even opera suggests he's still interested in narrative artwork. In this conversation, Ben and I explore the different facets of storytelling, or lack thereof, as a musician, his new album Scope Neglect, and his approach to composition across these decidedly different fields. ++ Music: "Unreal in the Eyes of the Dead" - Ben Frost (2024) "Chimera" - Ben Frost (2024) "Ich Dachte, Ich Haette Mehr Zeit" - Ben Frost, from the Netflix series Dark (2019) "The Burning World" - Ben Frost (2022) ++ Follow AIR Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/_airpodcast/ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/airpodcast Substack: https://airpodcast.substack.com/
In episode 74 of the Podcast for Social Research, BISR faculty Ajay Singh Chaudhary sits down with writer and artist Molly Crabapple to discuss his new book, The Exhausted of the Earth: Politics in a Burning World (Repeater). Live-recorded at P&T Knitwear in New York City, the conversation encompasses, among other things: the ubiquity of exhaustion (and how feelings of exhaustion might form the basis for new international solidarities); right-wing approaches to climate mitigation (and why, in the realm of climate policy, the Right has a "leg up"); "growth," "degrowth," and how the status quo actually thwarts abundance; the limits (or, illusions) of climate technocracy (and the kinds of climate technologies that can work); and international social movement responses climate catastrophe—and the lessons they might provide for U.S. activists.
"I Am a Woman of Almost 62 Years Old," writes Carla Sameth in one of the confessional poems from her courageous and nuanced full-length collection, Secondary Inspections, released in January 2024. For a voice this introspective and self-aware, Sameth's writing pours itself into the people around her--her biracial Black son and a mother succumbing to dementia as well as siblings, lovers, and her wife becoming her husband. As Eduardo C. Corral notes about Carla's work, "Blossoming and decay are the twin forces in these powerful poems. Addiction, death, raising a child blessed with more than one story, and queerness are the threads woven throughout the book, but they also vibrate with their own particular music." Particular, yes, but always leaning into the shared experience, several of these poems, such as "Love Letter to a Burning World," and "June 2020," decipher the intersecting perplexities of the pandemic, the intensification of racial unrest, and the fires--literal and figurative--that raged around us during that season. Sameth's gaze shrinks from none of the distress but does not linger in the emotions, arresting us instead with a captivating image or wry undertone. She says of her family, "We used to argue over the hearts and gizzards; now no one wants those parts." "Secondary Inspections invites us to take a second look at what we thought we knew and shows us how things are not always what they seem—identity can be questioned, provoke danger, and leave us impacted by how others see us; the bedrock of a family can be forever shifting and we too shift along with it. Through powerful narrative and vivid imagery, Sameth's poetry travels, searches, stumbles, and ultimately, returns. Even amidst heart-staggering moments, she reveals a rich cultural life that is both within, and that is further made possible by deeply being in the places you love with the people you love" (carlasameth.com). Carla Rachel Sameth is the co-poet laureate of Altadena (2022-2024) and a Poet Laureate Fellow with the Academy of American Poets. Her chapbook, What Is Left was published in December 2021 with Dancing Girl Press. Her memoir, One Day on the Gold Line was reissued by Golden Foothills Press in December 2022. Her work has been selected three times as Notable Essays of the Year in Best American Essays. A Pushcart and Best of the Net nominee. a Pasadena Rose Poet, a West Hollywood Pride Poet, and a former PEN Teaching Artist, Carla has taught creative writing to high school and university students, incarcerated youth and other diverse communities. Listen to Carla read her poems and talk candidly with Geneffa about the experiences that informed them--a conversation relatable to those who are mothers or have otherwise had to learn to embrace while letting go. Secondary Inspections is now available for order.
Ajay Singh Chaudhary talks about his new book, The Exhausted of the Earth: Politics in a Burning World. In his soon-to-be-published book, Dr. Chaudhary argues the climate crisis or the Anthropocene era is the political product of rightwing climate realism - what he terms the “Rex Tillerson Position.” Listeners should be aware politics, not technology or economics, explains why the US continues to emit an enormous amount of CO2e pollution. (The US healthcare industry contributes approximately 550 MT CO2e annually or roughly 9% of the nation's total.) The politics of functional climate denialism, or the belief business-as-usual can mitigate global warming, has resulted in economic, ecological and social despair, disenchantment or in sum socioecological exhaustion. What capitalism has built, Dr. Chaudhary argues, is an exhausted world. Any workable solution or any effort to create a sustainable environmental niche requires a new climate realism. Real ecomodernism he argues must be in sum grounded in decolonization - that essentially means the Global North no longer exploits the Global South. Ajay Singh Chaudhary is the Executive Director of the Brooklyn Institute for Social Research and a core faculty member specializing in social and political theory. He holds a PhD from Columbia University and an MSc from the London School of Economics. His research focuses on social and political theory and economy, political ecology, media, religion, and post-colonial studies. He has written for The Guardian, The Nation, The Baffler, n+1, Los Angeles Review of Books, Quartz, Social Text, Dialectical Anthropology, The Hedgehog Review, Filmmaker Magazine, and 3quarksdaily, among others. In this episode, Major writes… “Art is unequivocal evidence of our sanctity, of our ability to feel, to go beyond forbidden precincts into the depth of our emotions. I wish we would put a moratorium on questions of relevance of the arts and realize the gift of beauty that artists grant. In episode 73 of the Podcast for Social Research, recorded live following a screening of Daniel Goldhaber's cinematic adaptation of Andreas Malm's polemic against pacifism How to Blow Up a Pipeline, BISR faculty Isi Litke, RH Lossin, and Ajay Singh Chaudhary explore the aesthetic, historical, and thorny practical terrain of violence as activist strategy and political tool in the face of climate crisis. With Goldhaber's film as a jumping off point, they ask—and answer—questions like: how can cinema represent the complex harms wrought by climate devastation, in all their manifold temporalities, from freak accidents to slow disease to historical expropriations? How are solidarities built across ideological divides? What unites anti-colonial movements across the Global South with the struggles of subaltern groups in the Global North? And what underpins the belief in non-violence as the righteous mechanism for political change—and why is this wrong? Along the way, they touch on everything from the heist film (wherein the question is not whether one ought but whether one can pull it off), how comrades are not friends, workplace violence, radical flanks, Fanon's “stretched Marxism,” and much else besides. Plus a sneak preview from Ajay's new book, The Exhausted of the Earth: Politics in a Burning World, out this February from Repeater Books!

His lived experience is worlds away from mine, and listening to this album felt like I was stepping into a world where I didn't belong. My interview with author M.R O'Connor about her book, Ignition: Lighting Fires in a Burning World is now posted. In a riveting investigation of the science and ecology of wildfires, journalist M.R. O'Connor ventures into some of the oldest, most beautiful, and remote forests in North America to explore the powerful and ancient relationship between trees, fires, and humans. She also writes about her experience working the fire line, the ecological balance of building and the need to purge the forest with “good fires.” A prescient read in our times that I hope you all will pick up.

We are witnessing new climate disasters every day, and it can be hard to wonder the point of creativity, of making anything, when the world around us is in such peril. But art is how we process what is happening, digest it, and find new meaning in it.Art is also how we dream of a better future. It's how we inspire each other to keep going. How we amplify a vision of living in community and respect for each other and our planet. It takes real imagination to see the potential of humans to solve all of these problems we've created. It's much much easier to sink into despair. So put your creativity to good use, and help change the stories we tell about who we are, and who we could be. This era of the band is easily their most blindsiding, as they shifted heavily from the brutality of their early records to a more musical, goth, and at times even poppy direction. And what's more shocking is that they still ruled every step of the way. While Michael Gira still had a revolving door of members in the band at this time, vocalist and keyboardist Jarboe became an essential part of this era of Swans.Closing track: “Helpless Child” from Soundtracks for the Blind (1996)Spotify episode playlisthttps://open.spotify.com/user/motherpuncherincPatreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Mike's EP:Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple,Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @everyalbumalexHistory Tom's stuff:Debut album on Bandcamp, Spotify, AppleSubstackWebsiteMike's Picks:White Light from the Mouth of Infinity (1991) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteSoundtracks for the Blind (1996) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlex's Picks:The Great Annihilator (1995) — Best AlbumChildren of God (1987) — Personal FavoriteLove of Life (1992) — Worst AlbumSoundtracks for the Blind (1996) — Least FavoriteAlbums we discussed this episode…Children of God (1987)The Burning World (1989)White Light from the Mouth of Infinity (1991)Love of Life (1992)The Great Annihilator (1995)Soundtracks for the Blind (1996)
This is an intimate episode with Melanie sharing an essay from the scientist, activist, humanitarian and writer Barry Lopez. The essay is from his last book, “Embrace Fearlessly the Burning World,” published posthumously. Lopez makes a poignant plea to not fall into despair and hopelessness at the state of the world. Building on the foundation of Lopez's essay, Melanie shares several suggestions for how to find joy in dark times. The focus is on simple ways to help reset your nervous system in challenging times. For instance, did you know that trying to resist painful emotions increases psychological suffering? Or that helping other people or a cause that's important to you has been proven over and over again to helps get you out of your little mind and ego and into something more important? It helps manage the non-stop ruminating monkey mind thing. Also, nature is a powerful healer! Hanging out in nature can help elicit joy and happiness. She also shares several pieces of writing from the poets David Whyte and Mary Oliver, educational visionary Maria Montessori, and the Zen Buddhist teacher and writer Thich Nhat Hanh. James Naughton has narrated several of the late Barry Lopez's audiobooks, and he performs in a deep, calm, resonant tone. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Alan Minskoff discuss how Naughton's distinctive voice and apt delivery suit these valedictory essays. The audiobook takes the listener around the globe and captures Barry the writer and naturalist engaged in field work in places “remote, elemental, and fierce.” The listener is treated to his forays to the South Pole, the Alaskan outback, and Africa. In this episode, we hear about a Buddhist folk tale around a little bird who couldn't be burnt in a raging forest fire, and the parallels it offers on how to deal with a world that feels like it's constantly in decline. How do we move forward without being consumed by dread?
My guest today is Amy Powney, creative director for the “It-girl” sustainable fashion brand Mother of Pearl in London. Amy is an environmental force in British fashion and speaks often publicly on the importance of sustainability in fashion, and she has transformed Mother of Pearl from a traditional fashion company to one that fully embraces green practices. In 2021, film director Becky Hutner made “Fashion Reimagined,” a film that follows Powney as she traces Mother of Pearl's supply chain and discovers a host of environmental and humanitarian issues, including water pollution, deforestation and global warming. Vogue has called Powney: “One of the most clued up designers on the subject of sustainable fashion.” And the Sunday Times in London described her as “a voice for a new generation of designers.” Read the https://docs.google.com/document/d/1E3GV-ErVYjqBt92Xoa8UJCFmKwtqFmcWRhbl7VjeTtU/edit?usp=sharing (transcript of this episode) Get to know https://www.danathomas.com/index.html (Dana Thomas) and her book https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/554229/fashionopolis-by-dana-thomas/ (Fashionopolis) Read more about https://tribecafilm.com/films/fashion-reimagined-2022 (Fashion Reimagined), premiering at the https://tribecafilm.com/festival?utm_source=google&utm_medium=SEM&utm_campaign=GENTRIBECA&utm_id=SEM&gclid=CjwKCAjwy_aUBhACEiwA2IHHQDfi5OYF76gpjfw1bb_RywrD2qfNNqFhhWTB3guqUIU5nE0SWGUyvRoCZaIQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds (Tribeca Film Festival) Discover the fashion brand http://anothertomorrow.co (Another Tomorrow) Meet Barry Lopez and his books https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/672448/embrace-fearlessly-the-burning-world-by-barry-lopez/ (Embrace Fearlessly the Burning World) and https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/103565/arctic-dreams-by-barry-lopez/ (Arctic Dreams) Visit literary critic http://hermionehoby.com (Hermione Hoby) Music by Eric Brace of https://redbeetrecords.com/ (Red Beet Records) Cover art by http://www.studionumberone.com (Studio Number One) Learn more about https://dumfries-house.org.uk (Dumfries House), Prince Charles' wellness and sustainability center in Ayrshire, Scotland

Jarboe special - Swans & World of Skin - in conversation with David Eastaugh Between 1985 and 1996, she worked as a vocalist and keyboardist in the band, appearing on albums including Children of God (1987), The Burning World (1989), and Soundtracks for the Blind (1996). Jarboe's inclusion in the band marked a departure from their previous noise rock sound to a more melodic industrial and even folk rock sound. She also collaborated with Gira, forming their side project, The World of Skin in 1987, releasing several albums and singles. Jarboe left Swans in 1997 when the band broke up and embarked on a solo career, releasing various experimental records (many of which she has self-released and distributed over the internet)[10] including Sacrificial Cake (1995) and Anhedoniac (1998). She has continued to self-release solo albums and, despite not returning to the group, recorded vocals for two tracks on the re-formed Swans' album, The Seer (2012). Jarboe completed a world tour in the autumn/winter of 2013, with Veil of Thorns' P. Emerson Williams on guitar. She released an experimental soundscape album, With Sun Falling, with Veil of Thorns in June 2015.

In this excerpt from episode 7, "Strategy for a Burning World," the author and philosopher Derrick Jensen urges listeners to join in the struggle for the planet and for justice. "It is a terrible time to be alive in terms of having to watch the destruction of the planet," he says, "but it is also a wonderful time to be alive because we have opportunities to stop this destruction that were not available to those [fighting back] 200 years ago." He also discusses the morality of advocating for industrial collapse. Derrick describes conversations with two prominent agrarian organizers, and how many poor and working people around the world have the collective skills they need to survive outside capitalism right now, but are prevented from accessing land. He also discusses the relationship between colonization, free trade, and immigration.
