Seventy percent of Covid tests were processed in private laboratories, where APEX union says a senior scientist is paid 33 percent less than their counterparts in Te Whatu Ora labs. While partial strikes have been taking place since July last year, scientists, technicians and phlebotomists at SCL Labs across Wellington, the South Island and Hawke's Bay stopped work for 24 hours on Monday. It is an industry that includes a wide range of subsectors, including food and beverage manufacturing, wood manufacturing, transportation equipment manufacturing, and many more. Despite being a broad and necessary industry, the manufacturing sector can often be overlooked by many individuals deciding on a career path or simply looking for their next job.In this episode, we chat with David Munro, Manufacturing Consortium Manager at the Excellence in Manufacturing Consortium, to explore this diverse industry, particularly what job opportunities are available (you may be surprised!), what to expect when working in the industry, and what the future may hold for those considering a career in manufacturing.Links:Find your local WorkBC CentreExcellence in Manufacturing ConsortiumBC Youth in Manufacturing InitiativeWILWorks Post SecondaryWILWorks Skilled Trades in Advanced ManufacturingPreparing for Job Interviews: A Free Virtual WorkshopDigitally Smart: Getting Employed Workshop Series

Most medical labs from the Wellington region down to the bottom of the South Island will be impacted by lab worker strikes this week. SCL scientists, technicians and phlebotomists say they've had enough of playing post-pandemic catch-up, tackling the rising cost of living and staffing shortages. Currently an SCL lab worker earns $82,000 per year, while an equivalent nurse now sits at $105,000 a year. APEX Union advocacy leader David Munro says parent company Awanui Labs intends to present a 'take-it-or-leave-it' offer tomorrow. David Munro spoke to Charlotte Cook.

A union representing medical laboratory workers says members taking part in partial strike action are being sent home without pay. The company, Southern Community Laboratories, says none of those suspended are involved in Covid-19 testing. But the union says employees who have been working long hours and extra shifts testing Covid samples are affected. More than 700 workers at private laboratories around the country have issued strike notices for a 24-hour full withdrawal of labour from Friday, 4th of September. David Munro is the national advocate for the APEX union. [audio_play] Southern Community Laboratories declined an invitation to come on the programme. It said in a statement: "In relation to the partial strikes this week, we are doing our best to work collaboratively with employees who are not performing all of their duties. We have suspended six staff members who have refused to perform duties that are central to their roles (for example, employees in our call centre who are refusing to answer phone calls and none of those suspended are involved in Covid-19 testing)." "This is out of a total of 1200 employees, approximately 460 of whom are engaging in the partial strikes. We continue to work with the Ministry of Health and the DHBs, keeping them advised on progress and keeping up our commitment on Covid-19 testing." "As our overall patient volumes since the pandemic are lower than last year (even with inclusion of Covid-19 test volumes), we have continued to maintain a high quality of service during this time, even with the additional demand for Covid-19 tests."

Junior doctors will be walking off the job at 8am this morning as part of a five-day strike over their working conditions. It's the latest move in a long-running dispute over contracts, with the junior doctors accusing the District Health Boards of exploiting them.Resident doctors are accusing the DHB of wanting full control over their rosters.Resident Doctors' Association spokesperson, David Munro, told Kate Hawkesby he is hoping the strike will force the DHB to compromise. "There has been a lot of mischief from the DHBs, they make it sound like someone sits in the RDA's head office and makes some sort of decision...but it's a world away from the truth.""The local medical team work out what are going to be the best arrangements, come up with what suits them best and the RDA is simply there to make sure that those arrangements don't breach any protections in the Multiple Employer Collective agreement, and that nobody is inadvertently agreeing to do anything unsafe of that will be too fatiguing.""Local teams make the arrangements and as long as they are safe and ensure food patient care, they are put in place."Munro said the DHBs want the ability to change rosters without the agreement of the local medical teams or the union."The DHBs want to change to be able to say, 'we need a roster, I am going to put this in regardless of the considerations of the union or the local team and even if it's unsafe because we don't have enough people to staff it'," he said. The DHBs say the strike is a waste of time and that talking to each other is the only constructive way forward. However, Munro said if they really feel that way they could have softened their position."They have had a very aggressive position and have shown no sign of moving away from it."He said money isn't the issue. However, he said the DHB has spent $15 million fighting the junior doctors' strikes."The doctors are pretty disappointed about that."
