Digging for Fire was something of a sleeper for us. We explain what that means in the episode. What we can say is that this is a solid movie. There are a number of lessons in this one, all good. Except for the trailer. Very misleading, and coupled with the very brief logline it may turn people away. Which is a shame because if you skip past this film you're missing out on some very good entertainment. There is a lot to enjoy and learn from in this movie. On episode 111 of SOMEWHERE IN THE SKIES, Ryan is joined by actor/writer and UFO buff, Steve Berg. Ryan originally learned of Berg's work through a hilarious segment of the Comedy Central tv show, "Drunk History", in which Berg recounted the Roswell UFO incident in concise and inebriated detail. But Berg wasn't a one-trick pony. His UFO knowledge was vast, and it truly shows in this wide-ranging interview. Ryan and Berg discuss the late Stanton Friedman and his contributions to the UFO research field. They also discuss the prolific work of Jacques Vallée, belief systems, the cult-like tendencies of people in the UFO community, the Bennewitz affair in the 1980s, and Berg's personal thoughts on the recent mainstream coverage of UFOs and the work being done by To the Stars Academy. Berg then introduces us to his current podcast endeavor, Voyage to the Stars, a cosmic dark comedy of improvised storytelling and rich science fiction lore. Guest Bio: Steve Berg is an actor and improviser who was most recently seen in New Line’s comedy feature "Tag" starring Jon Hamm and Rashida Jones. His credits also include recurring roles on NBC's "The Good Place," ABC's "The Goldbergs," Comedy Central's "Idiotsitter," and BET's "The Comedy Get Down." He has appeared in two features for director Joe Swanberg -- the Netflix Original "Win It All" and the indie "Digging For Fire" which premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. Berg has been a drunk narrator multiple times on Comedy Central's "Drunk History" and was a series regular in the Fox Television pilot "WTF America" produced by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer. Berg can next be seen in the indie "When Jeff Tried to Save the World." He is originally from Omaha, Nebraska. Joe Swanberg (Drinking Buddies, Happy Christmas) discusses his new 8-episode series Easy for Netflix using the same improvisational style he developed to make his numerous indie features. We talk about: Writing, directing and producing Easy Casting over Skype Improvising vs. sticking to a script Scheduling in movies vs. TV Shooting in Chicago (as much as possible) A typical day on a Swanberg set Pitching an idea to Netflix Post-production strategies Quotes from the show: “There was no rule book for how to do a show like this.” “The characters are all coming from autobiographical places in terms of my connection to them.” “When you put out a movie, you are buying advertising, sort of like throwing rocks hoping to hit the people who might like it, and because Netflix already has that data, it puts the show at such an advantage already to find its perfect audience.” “It’s really wild to think that I made this thing with my small crew in Chicago… but the instant global audience is going to be akin to a big holiday film release.”
The guys are back in full force this week to discuss the finer points of linguistics before they review THE REVENANT. Dave considers it his holy grail because it has everything he could hope for: it’s long, quiet, not a lot happens, and there’s some good killing. Kris and Evan enjoy it as well for its technical prowess, although they never felt plugged into its story. After a CROCODILE DUNDEE 2 reference, Kris transitions to talking about THE FOREST, a terrible horror film that he describes in such vivid detail that he accidentally sells Dave and Evan on seeing it. Then all three delve into another one of Dave’s favorite movies: DRINKING BUDDIES. They explore its complicated relationship dynamics and talk more about Joe Swanberg as a filmmaker. Expect to hear a little more about DIGGING FOR FIRE. You've been warned.
On this episode we leave the marital home to talk EYES WIDE SHUT and LOVE IS STRANGE. The conversation on these two films where married couples spend time apart and out of the homes they’ve made together has been inspired by new to video DIGGING FOR FIRE.
Dave is back this week to offer his take on GRANDMA, which echoes Sean's sentiments about the film. Then he goes back to hating on Joe Swanberg for DIGGING FOR FIRE and derides Mumblecore movies in general, before Evan and Kris review the Johnny Depp Whitey Bulger film BLACK MASS. Kris thinks Depp’s performance is good despite his makeup and Evan agrees since he found several scenes chilling. Overall they spend a lot more time discussing better gangster movies like THE DEPARTED and GOODFELLAS, which should tell you something. Dave wraps everything up by talking about the documentary THE BLACK PANTHERS: VANGUARD OF THE REVOLUTION, which he says is a bit one-sided, but totally watchable and really well-done. This was kind of a random movie selection. I just picked from the movie Central Track had reviewed recently. It’s a so-so movie, but it does bring up a lot of subject matter that was very easy to talk about. Talking about it with me is my longtime friend Ryan Maffei. You may remember him from […]

The guys open this week’s episode with a discussion on Deez Nuts’s candidacy for president. Then Kris and Evan rip into WE ARE YOUR FRIENDS, which they agree does NOT star Zac Efron as a young Robert Loggia. Their agitated commentary is enough to leave Dave “slack-jawed and open-mouthed.” After Kris expresses confusion over more celebrities (this time Brian Austin Green and Ian Ziering), Dave takes over to share his thoughts on two fucking horrible movies. First up is TEN THOUSAND SAINTS, where the most interesting character dies 15 minutes in and Ethan Hawke plays almost the same character he did in BOYHOOD. Second is DIGGING FOR FIRE, one of the whitest movies Dave has ever seen. Joe Swanberg’s film is about dull white people with dull white people problems, and it’s so bad that it makes Dave’s soul die a little bit.
Joe Swanberg and Jake Johnson discuss their film about the adventures of a couple who find a buried bone and a gun on their weekend getaway.
