Tune in as Arthur's buddy Anna hops back onto the program for a deep dive into Don't Worry Darling, the 2022 psychological thriller that had been swamped in a notorious wave of media frenzy (remember the spit mystery, anyone?). But once you dig past the Hollywood hubbub, what do you get with this mindfuck-lite trip through a 1950s desert-set company town whose vision of idyllic suburbia just may be hiding dark secrets beneath the surface? Along with unpacking all of that on this episode, the discussion covers rom-com chatter that ranges from Anna's Isn't It Romantic-related story to the hosts' shared take that Set It Up is enjoyable enough while being overrated, Anna's numerous imitations of Harry Styles's “our life together” line, Arthur's hatred for the Wicked trailer, and interesting material from both the spec script and the revised script that had ultimately been left out of DWD (perhaps to its detriment). Directed by Olivia Wilde, Don't Worry Darling stars Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Chris Pine, Olivia Wilde, KiKi Layne, Gemma Chan, Nick Kroll, Sydney Chandler, Kate Berlant, Asif Ali, Douglas Smith, Timothy Simons, Ari'el Stachel, Steve Berg, and Dita Von Teese. On episode 354 of SOMEWHERE IN THE SKIES, Steve Berg returns to give his fascinating solo presentation from Anomacon 2023, titled, The Weird Stuff: The Role of Absurdity and Surrealism in High Strange Encounters. In this presentation, Berg explains that when it comes to encounters with UFO occupants and cryptids, the cases most commonly used as examples for the strongest evidence are the ones that fit into the framework most easily with our sense of reality, often leaving out the really weird cases. But what if the weirdness was part of the point? Using encounter cases throughout history and focusing on the absurd qualities and “dreaminess” of these experiences, maybe we can discover that the more odd and surreal an encounter is, the bigger the imprint it makes.Find all of Steve Berg's work at the Linktree: https://linktr.ee/stevebergThis episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. As we've been discussing recently, homelessness in the U.S. is still on the rise. In fact, rates have been climbing nationally by about 6% every year since 2017, according to the National Alliance to End Homelessness. That uptick coincides with soaring housing costs and rising prices for necessities like food and transportation. As we work to chip away at the homelessness crisis, one of the often overlooked components is data collection. Collecting the right data is critical in helping us understand the issue and deploy our resources more efficiently. Quality data, of course, enables communities to tailor solutions to people's specific needs so they can exit homelessness. To help us better understand the importance of data and the complexities surrounding homelessness on a national scale, Steve Berg, chief policy officer at the National Alliance to End Homelessness is on the show today. Steve is an expert in the field of homelessness and housing policy. He has dedicated much of his career to advocating for effective policies and strategies to address homelessness in the U.S. And he's written extensively on various ways addressing the primary need for housing for people experiencing homelessness leads to stability and better health. In part 1 of Comedians on UFOs, we are joined by Rhys Darby, Kumail Nanjiani, Aisling Bea, Dave Foley, Steve Berg, and Moshe Kasher!UFO accounts can sometimes reminds us of a playful world. A humorous world. A species looking for structure and pattern and constantly being bombarded with both chaos and ridiculousness. And that if most definitely UFOs. And it's also comedy. Comedy gives us a communal experience full of confusion and raw emotional release. It makes us feel more human than ever. So when we're faced with something possibly non-human, we can choose to run away from it or fight it. Or, we can embrace it and sometimes, laugh about it. In this series, Ryan digs into the archives of Somewhere in the Skies to bring you a collection of interviews he's conducted throughout the years with comedians. And, as you'll see, a common thread starts to weave its way through these conversations. Why are comedians drawn to UFOs? How can we use it to both accept and possibly even understand UFO phenomenon.
