When Barbara Walters joined ABC news in 1976, she became the highest paid journalist in the U.S. – pulling in $1 million a year. That, not surprisingly, triggered a lot of resentment among her peers, none more so than her evening news co-anchor Harry Reasoner. Overcoming envy and sexism and balancing a career and motherhood, Walters reached the pinnacle of her profession and stayed there, a story explored in the new documentary Barbara Walters: Tell Me Everything. The film directed by Jackie Jesko premieres Thursday evening at Tribeca Festival in New York. The feature, which debuts on Hulu later this month, is the latest from Imagine Documentaries, the enormously successful nonfiction division of the production company founded by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer. On the latest edition of Deadline's Doc Talk podcast, we explore the company's upcoming docs and impressive slate of Emmy contenders with Imagine Entertainment President Justin Wilkes and Imagine Documentaries President Sara Bernstein. Taking their cue from the Barbara Walters documentary subtitle – Tell Me Everything – Wilkes and Bernstein tell us everything: why Imagine got into documentaries, how the Barbara Walters project came about, how they work with estates and other stakeholders on celebrity biographies without surrendering editorial independence, and what they see as the future of branded content in the nonfiction and fiction spaces. Imagine Documentaries won five Emmys last year for its film Jim Henson Idea Man, directed by Ron Howard. While the Television Academy has proven receptive to honoring documentaries about well-known people, the documentary branch of the Motion Picture Academy has demonstrated reluctance to do likewise. Wilkes shares his unvarnished thoughts about how the Academy could change voting rules to give celebrity-oriented documentaries a fair shake. The Imagine execs also respond to a recent article in the Hollywood trade papers asserting that music and other celebrity films are “killing the documentary.” They don't see it that way. That's on the latest edition of the Doc Talk podcast, hosted by Oscar winner John Ridley (12 Years a Slave, Shirley) and Matt Carey, Deadline's documentary editor. The pod is a production of Deadline and Ridley's Nō Studios. Listen to the episode above or on major podcast platforms including Spotify, iHeart and Apple. Learn more about your ad choices. Happy 2025, everyone, and welcome to the first episode of the new year! This year for 2025, I am not just making a list of tasks to check off but am also envisioning the life I want by December 31st, 2025! Inspired by my business coach, I am focusing on creating a vision rather than just tasks. It's a lot like planning a trip in that you need to know where you're headed before mapping out the route!Tune in as I share how reflecting on this year made me realize that it is truly a pivotal one, reminding me of setting my vision for 2020 despite COVID-19 uncertainties. It is really about deciding whether to let life happen or actively shape it.I also talk about a couple of books that have really shaped my thinking - The Good-Enough Life by Avram Alpert and The Comfort Crisis by Michael Easter - books that have both caused me to question our pursuit of more (more money, more stuff) and the comfort that shelters us from real challenges. Is more truly better, or does it just bring more problems?I explore the philosophy of living a "good enough" life and confronting the comfort that might be holding us back, and I also introduce you to my word for 2025: curiosity. Inspired by Brian Grazer's new book, I am truly embracing curiosity as a way to break free from my comfort zone and the lies that fear tends to create. This mindset shift is about being open to new experiences, even if they challenge or scare me.I really hope that you will join me for this episode of the show as I share my journey of setting a vision for 2025, pushing past comfort, and embracing curiosity! This episode is about self-reflection, growth, and figuring out how to live a life that's not just comfortable but meaningful!Time Stamps:[1:17] - I created a list of tasks for 2025 but ultimately focused on my end-of-year vision.[4:32] - Reflecting on big life decisions, I have realized the need to shape my vision for 2025.[7:13] - I contemplate whether to enjoy my current life or reinvest for future growth[9:54] - Modern conveniences contribute to a sheltered, under-challenged lifestyle.[11:41] - Listen as I question if comfort in life and business has led to a lack of challenges.[12:26] - Compulsive activity often distracts from addressing real issues in life.[14:01] - I discuss how life becomes a never-ending checklist, and satisfaction remains elusive as desires grow.[15:17] - Embracing curiosity and moving beyond your comfort zone help form the vision for a meaningful life.[17:14] - Fear comes before experience which limits growth by lowering the threshold for what constitutes a problem.[18:11] - Disrupting one's comfort zone and embracing curiosity are so important for growth.[22:40] - I close by arguing that success requires accepting failure and overcoming obstacles that are rooted in fear and lies.Resources:The Accidental Leader - Websiteyournarketing.cobo@yourmarketingco.comBo McDonald on LinkedInAvram Alpert - The Good-Enough LifeMichael Easter - The Comfort CrisisBrian Grazer & Charles Fishman - A Curious Mind: The Secret to a Bigger Life

Jeffrey and Dan dive deep into creativity, innovation, and the intricate dance between good business and exciting innovation. Inspired by Dan's quarterly book, Everything Is Created Backward, they discuss how integrating existing technologies and ideas to create something entirely new can completely disrupt the market and lead to record-breaking profit. In This Episode: There's a permanent tension between creative people and organizational people (business executives). Most creative people are not good organizational people.Creatives are focused on innovation, while executives are focused on finances and risk aversion—and furthering their careers. This approach often stifles innovation.Creatives are also subject to immediate public scrutiny. Their work is usually under the critical eye of audiences and critics.Executives, by contrast, are evaluated based on stock market performance and long-term organizational success. Their reviews are reflected in corporate outcomes.Successful partnerships, like that of Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, showcase how creative and organizational individuals can collaborate effectively to create engaging content. In order to bridge the gap, creatives need to better package their ideas to highlight the business potential to financially-minded decision makers.Businesses, on the other hand, need to be more open to creative, potentially risky ideas that could pay off big time.Recognizing your core business focus is what drives long-term success.Major business innovations often come from combining three existing components in a new way rather than from creating something entirely new from scratch.Large companies sometimes buy promising start-ups, not to integrate their innovation, but to shut down potential future competition. Resources: Personality: The Lloyd Price Musical Learn more about Jeffrey Madoff

Max Burkholder stars as the lead of Seth MacFarlane's critically acclaimed series TED, a prequel to the hit film franchise. He plays the leading role of “John Bennet” (the younger version of Mark Wahlberg's character from the films), a good-hearted teenager who is still in his awkward teenage phase. With Ted's help, John hilariously navigates adolescence, dealing with everything from first dates to high school bullies. Premiering on January 11, 2024, Ted launched as Peacock's most-watched original title ever through its first three days on the platform. Burkholder is perhaps best known for his portrayal of “Max Braverman” in NBC's long running award-winning series PARENTHOOD, from producers Jason Katims, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer. Here Max raised awareness while portraying a young boy with Asperger's syndrome. After the second episode aired, Asperger's was one of the most frequently searched terms on Google. He also played the lead role in Paramount TV's WHEN THE STREET LIGHTS GO ON for DGA, Oscar, IDA, and Emmy-nominated director Brett Morgen. His notable recurring roles include HBO's IN TREATMENT and BROTHERS AND SISTERS. In film, Burkholder starred in Debra Eisenstadt's hit Sundance comedy BLUSH opposite Wendy McLendon-Covey; and in the title role of BENJAMIN, alongside comedy veterans Rob Corddry, Kevin Pollak and Dave Foley.  Burkholder began his career at a very young age in films including DADDY DAY CARE directed by Steve Carr, FRIENDS WITH MONEY directed by Nicole Holofcener, and a starring role in the Michael Bay-produced hit feature THE PURGE opposite Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey.  In the world of voiceover, Burkholder has voiced characters on a number of hit series including Amazon Prime's INVINCIBLE, FAMILY GUY, THE CLEVELAND SHOW, AMERICAN DAD and THE LAND BEFORE TIME. Today's guest is very intentional about designing and building winning teams. She spent the better part of almost 20 years building phenomenal sales teams at Salesforce. Christina Smears is the Vice President, Global Sales Development & Inside Sales at MongoDB. Christina joins Host Matt Benelli to share why leaders shouldn't try to build a team of people who are exactly like them, the parallels between teaching and selling technology solutions, and how to empower people in your organization to innovate. Takeaways:Building diverse teams is not just about gender or race; it's about including people with varied experiences, skill sets, and backgrounds. Diverse teams are more creative, innovative, and outperform homogeneous ones. Leaders are encouraged to proactively reach out and recruit diverse talent to enhance team performance.Every professional, regardless of their experience level, can benefit from having a coach. Coaching helps in uncovering blind spots, accelerating personal growth, and improving leadership skills. It's important to find a coach that aligns with your values and challenges you to grow.Prioritize tasks and goals by differentiating between 'glass balls' (critical and fragile) and 'rubber balls' (resilient and can bounce back). This helps in focusing on what truly matters and supports better decision-making during the onboarding process and in high-pressure situations. Acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of team members regularly. Recognition serves as a powerful motivator and plays a vital role in fostering a positive work environment. It's about creating a culture where appreciation is freely given, reinforcing positive behaviors and contributions. Leaders should foster a culture that values trying new ideas and approaches, even if they might fail. Encourage innovation by allowing team members to take initiative and experiment, thereby accelerating learning and adaptation. Remember, as a leader, you play a significant role in your team members' lives. Your actions, words, and decisions impact them deeply. Strive to be a positive force, supporting your team's growth, job satisfaction, and success.Quote of the Show:“I think the best teams are where I hire people that are different than me in skill set, background, and strengths. One of Hollywood's most prolific film producers, Brian and his Imagine Entertainment partner Ron Howard are responsible for a litany of critically acclaimed, box-office hit films and television shows including Apollo 13, 8 Mile, Splash, Arrested Development, The Beatles: Eight Days a Week, and many more. His productions have been honored with numerous awards including an astounding 10 Oscar wins, 50 Emmys, and 11 Golden Globes. Today we explore Brian's unique approach to storytelling, why he believes questions are more important than answers, and why curiosity has been the “superpower” that fueled his rise as one of Hollywood's leading producers and visionaries. Curiosity is so central to Brian's success in fact that he wrote a book about it entitled, A Curious Mind, which he has recently expanded upon in a newly released version. It was a thrill to sit down with a man that I deeply respect and admire. This conversation left me with a newfound appreciation of curiosity not only as an art form, but as a powerful driver of human happiness. Writer Akiva Goldsman guides us through the long and winding road to the production of 2001's Best Picture Oscar winner A BEAUTIFUL MIND. Inspired to take on the challenge of adapting the book by growing up in a house that fostered kids with mental illness, Akiva's connection to the material was evident in his first pitch to Ron Howard's partner Brian Grazer. He knew the subject had to be handled with the appropiate respect and sensitivity, but was also incredibly creative in his vision for how to cinematically portray the intricacies of schizophrenia. Star Russell Crowe, who had to leave in the middle of filming to accept his Oscar for GLADIATOR, was particular and precise in a role that helped define his career.
