Buckle up, because we're heading back to 1974 and diving into two cinematic sinkholes of desperation, debauchery, and… digging for dead bodies? For Episode 40, Brad's thrown Jake into the grimy, gambling purgatory of "The Gambler," while Jake's plunged Brad into the blood-soaked, tequila-fueled odyssey of "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia." First up, Brad's wrestled with James Caan's Axel Freed, a down on his luck teacher in pursuit of one last roll of the dice. Brace yourselves for existential despair, smoky backrooms, and enough high-stakes wagers to make you sweat through your earbuds. Meanwhile, Jake's been grappling with Sam Peckinpah's magnum opus of chaos, "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia." Warren Oates stars as Bennie, a hapless pianist dragged into a grotesque quest for a severed head and a hefty payday. Expect sun-baked highways and more moral ambiguity than a Tijuana back alley. Did Jake find solace in Caan's self-destructive symphony? Did Brad endure the psychedelic fever dream that is "Alfredo Garcia?" And will anyone emerge from this episode with their sanity intact? Tune in, but remember that when it comes to 1974, the only guarantee is that things are gonna get messy. So grab your whiskey, your existential dread, and your metaphorical shovels, because we're about to dig up some classic cinema dirt. Other movies discussed in this episode: Onionhead (1958), Ride a Crooked Trail (1958), Bonnie and Clyde (1967), The Wild Bunch (1969), Midnight Cowboy (1969), Duel (1971), Straw Dogs (1972), Badlands (1973), Charley Varrick (1973), The Taking of Pelham 123 (1974), Murder on the Orient Express (1974), The Man With the Golden Gun (1974), Young Frankenstein (1974), Chinatown (1974), Blazing Saddles (1974), The Year Without Santa Claus (1974), The Front Page (1974), The Conversation (1974), Italianamerican (1974), Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974), Lenny (1974), Going in Style (1979), Thelma & Louise (1991), Last Action Hero (1993), The Straight Story (1999), The Road (2009), Django Unchained (2012), The Gambler (2014), Win It All (2017), Uncut Gems (2019), Self Reliance (2023). And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me. 10 And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so. 11 And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. 12 And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces. 13 He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan; 14 And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the LORD God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over. 15 And when the sons of the prophets which were to view at Jericho saw him, they said, The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.John 15:1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. 2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. 3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. 5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. 6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. 8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.— — —Watch/Listen here using our Subsplash WebShare Playerhttps://cbcponca.subspla.sh/qnvvknmListen on archive.orghttps://archive.org/download/011424-am-facebook-stream/011424AM-FacebookStream.mp3

It’s probably not the best idea to leave your duffel bag full of cash with your friend whose gambling habit is out of control, but that’s exactly what happens in ‘Win It All’ (2017). Jake Johnson stars as the lovable but ever-losing Eddie, who can’t seem to win and can’t seem to stop. Add some money that isn’t his and you’ve got the recipe for a bad situation. Eddie manages to start turning things around, though, and the future seems bright...for now. Joe Swanberg directs, bringing his typical naturalistic style and improvised comedy, turning a standard gambling plot into something heartwarming and fun to watch. The rest of the cast is just as charismatic as Johnson, so every scene buzzes. It’s entertaining all the way to the heart-pounding end. Go all in for Episode 28. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/framesandfools/message

Ben Reiter is a senior writer for Sports Illustrated and the author of Astroball: The New Way to Win It All. He joined SI in 2004 a few years out of college and has written for them ever since. In 2014 Ben wrote a cover story for SI entitled YOUR 2017 WORLD SERIES CHAMPS featuring the then sorry Astros who were the laughingstock of baseball at the time. Three years later, his prediction came true. His book chronicling the journey has been dubbed Moneyball 2.0. Our conversation blew me away in how closely the parallels have been between baseball management and fundamental investing over the last 15 years. From the incorporation of data to the challenges in managing people, I suspect if you just change the names of the players and the labels for the process, this could be a full blown conversation about investing. Baseball may even be ahead of the data revolution in investing, and the story of the Astros could hint at lessons that money managers will need to apply going forward. The Cleveland Browns opened preseason camp, which means year three of this plan. This is the year to show something. At least that's how the team that the Browns should hope to follow did it. This week's Takes By The Lake podcast centers on Doug Lesmerises' interview with baseball writer Ben Reiter, the author of the new book, "Astroball: The New Way to Win It All." Why talk football with a baseball writer? Because Reiter chronicled the rise of a franchise that tanked and rebuilt the way the Browns hope to. Houston's two low seasons in their plan compared to the misery of the Browns going 1-15 and 0-16. Yet that absolutely started the Astros on their path to the 2017 World Series. Reiter is doing a lot of interviews for what is a very interesting book, one that Browns fans may want to read to get an understanding of the philosophy and strategy of a team that successfully pulled off what the Browns are trying now. Yes, it has worked. Doug is planning to write more about this in this week's 3rd & Short column at cleveland.com, so for now listen to this 25-minute chat with Reiter, and see what baseball's best team can tell you about football's worst team from a year ago. On this week's show, fateful duffle bags turn desperate people into unstable people. It's all based on the release of Netflix's new film WIN IT ALL, which stars Jake Johnson as a gambling addict with one job to do — don't open that bag an old acquaintance left at his apartment. After reviewing Joe Swanberg's WIN IT ALL, we transition to A SIMPLE PLAN (1998) at 21:40, in which Bill Paxton and Billy Bob Thornton try not to freak out about finding $4 million or about how much their movie resembles FARGO. At the 35 minutes, we wrap up with MONEY FOR NOTHING (1993) and discuss how the movie's star-studded cast can't make up for its rickety tone. Just think of what we could do with a podcast about this much money! Our lives are changed forever!

So IF you are right-of-center OR a Conservative, shouldn't we be rooting for Romney ALL THE WAY?? i am stunned to hear of people, who are going to vote FIRMLY for another Republican- which is the same as voting for President Obama... You truly want that? Tonight is about ELECTION 2012- and what it would take to WIN IT ALL. Sounds direct enough, right? Think again- there are a bunch of factors both for President and Senate that make this anything BUT straightforward. Where we are, what we need, what it would take- and then WHY it is critical to do it now, and not it four years. You heard on my idea for a Romney slate? Tonight- you get my best shot at what that would look like and why, and a first peek at a newer, smaller, leaner Cabinet in Washington DC. IF you love America- tune in tonight and then VOTE in November, and bring as many friends as you can that think, act, believe like you do. This is the SINGLE biggest election of our LIFETIME.
