He wasn't looking for anything unusual that Saturday afternoon, but partway up the hill, he discovered what looked like two mannequins. On August 17, 1966, Paulo Cordeiro Azevedo dos Santos went bird hunting on Morro do Vintém, a hill that overlooked the Santa Rosa neighborhood of Niterói in Rio de Janeiro. Instead of birds, he stumbled upon a horrifying scene: two lifeless bodies, partially covered in vegetation. He rushed to report his disturbing discovery to local radio patrol officer Antônio Guerra, but his story was dismissed as a prank. The following day, 18-year-old Jorge da Costa Alves and his friends went searching for Alves' lost kite and were hit with a putrid odor that led them to the same bodies. Alves immediately reported the discovery to the Niterói police station. August 17, 1966 On a hilltop near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, two men's bodies are found by a man flying his kite. When the man came upon the bodies he immediately informed the authorities who came swiftly to investigate. Strangely, the bodies has lead masks covering the eyes and were wearing raincoats. Along with the bodies a note was found that read: “16:30 be at the specified location. 18:30 ingest capsules, after the effect protect metals await signal mask”. On August 20th, 1966, police recover the bodies of two Brazilian television technicians deceased on the Morro Do Vintem hill in Rio de Janeiro. The autopsies showed no signs of violence and home-made lead masks were found resting by the bodies, hence the name the Lead Mask Murders.

Quite possibly the strangest crime scene ever. In 1966 upon a hillside in Rio de Janeiro, two men were found dead in full suits, wearing mysterious lead masks for which the case got its name. As it turns out, there was much going on behind the scenes; communication with Mars, attempted portals to the spirit world, and least of all, an ever-lasting mark in Brazilian history.
In the late summer of 1966, Miguel José Viana and Manoel Pereira da Cruz were found dead on the slopes of Vintém Hill in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro. Curios items were found on them including, perhaps most mysterious, a set of hand crafted lead masks covering their eyes. What happened to these two electronic technicians? We lay out some of the known details of the case as well as examine a few of the most popular theories.
