Michael Angarano has been acting since he was an infant and has a long resume of memorable work in both comedic and dramatic roles—“Almost Famous,” “Will and Grace,” “This is Us,” “Gentlemen Broncos,” “Oppenheimer,” to name a few. His latest is a wonderful comedy with a lot of heart that he stars in, co-wrote and directed called “Sacramento.” On this episode he talks about the long road of getting that film made, how he needed to adjust once he saw Michael Cera's approach to the role, and the interesting realization that he may not need to act and direct and write at the same time again. He tells a story about suddenly facing a strange form of stage fright, and the sensitive way Steven Soderbergh helped him get though it. He explains why he says he doesn't have an acting process, has a particular aversion to relaxation exercises, and much more. Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft. Follow Back To One on Instagram

This week we watched Gentlemen Broncos. We talked about what year are we in, poop darts, battle stags, and that post credit scene!
Send us a text This week on Fabulous Film & Friends, we're going to scale down and take a look at the freakin' sweet indie filmmaking skills of director Jared Hess with his 2004 quirky sleeper hit, Napoleon Dynamite starring Jon Heder, John Gries, Aaron Ruell, Efron Ramirez, Tina Majorino, Haylie Duff, Trevor Snarr, Shondrella Avery, and Diedrich Bader alongside the even quirkier and sleepier box office bomb, Gentlemen Broncos, made in 2009 and starring Michael Angarano, Jermaine Clement, Jennifer Coolidge, Halley Feiffer, Hectór Jiménez, Mike White and Sam Rockwell. This week I have a panel of awesome wizards from Idaho and Utah in David Johnson, DDS and Burton along with Texas fantasy author and hypnotherapist Joe Field, all three of whom are fully qualified to comment on the veracity and value of these two unconventional productions. Before we enter a bizarro universe of dry lips, brown suits with snowboots, and retro-primitive laser battles against rocket launching chordate, the synopses: In Napoleon Dynamite an awkward, misunderstood but spirited high schooler hits back at the status quo in small town Preston Idaho, drawing fantastic creatures, dancing to funky music and standing by Pedro Sanchez, a new student who bravely runs for class president. Gentlemen Broncos follows Benjamin Purvis, a young, homeschooled writer whose sci-fi story Yeast Lords is plagiarized by Dr. Ronald Chevalier, a washed-up author teaching seminars for high school students. Do these films stand as classics or just offbeat oddities? Find out! In this episode, we dive into the wonderfully weird world of "Gentlemen Broncos," a 2009 cult comedy directed by Jared Hess. The film follows Benjamin, a home-schooled teenager and aspiring science fiction writer, whose life takes a bizarre turn when his novel is stolen by his idol, a washed-up author named Chevalier. As Chevalier publishes the story under his own name, we get to see hilariously dramatized versions of Benjamin's sci-fi tale, complete with low-budget effects and awkward heroics. "Gentlemen Broncos" offers a quirky and satirical look at the trials of artistic creation, fame, and the fine line between inspiration and theft, all wrapped in Hess's uniquely eccentric comedic style. Join us as we unpack the layers of this oddball gem, exploring what makes it a cult favorite and how it stands out in the realm of indie comedies.
From the director of Napoleon Dynamite Jared Hess, who one of us describes very aptly as Wes Anderson’s naughty younger brother, Gentlemen Broncos is a tale of adolescence, friendship and the grubbier side of the entertainment industry dealing with plagiarism, creative compromises, standing up for oneself… Ah who are we kidding! We came for the … Continue reading "428: Gentlemen Broncos [2009] Movie Discussion"

It's time to take a trip back to the awkward and quirky year of 2009 to revisit the 3rd film from the creators of Napoleon Dynamite. Grab your favorite yeast, saddle up your battle stag, and prepare yourself for Gentlemen Broncos.
“I see myself as a bit more fruity. I'm not a macho guy, wondering where my testicles have gone. I still know where they are” The panel of peril pick up an excessively large ball of popcorn from a bowl on their kitchen table. They chisel off a portion-sized amount, and dive onto the couch to watch this week's film Gentlemen Broncos (Jared Hess, 2009). Benjamin Purvis (Michael Angarano) is a young writer with a dream of paying tribute to his late father by publishing his pulp sci-fi tome Yeast Lords. Attending a writer's symposium, featuring a talk from his favourite author Ronald Chevalier (Jemaine Clement), should give him a leg up on the competition, but desperate people do desperate things. One desperate person in particular. Watch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdpFpfIBkXc ********PLOT SPOILER ALERT******** Little does Benjamin know that Chevalier is struggling with his latest novel, has his publisher ready to drop him, and he has zero qualms with plagiarising the (better) work of others. How can Benjamin prove the original work was his, and that Chevalier has simply added the suffixes ‘onius', ‘ainous', and ‘anous' to his characters' names? That would be telling. What the actual flip did the panel make of this one? How the actual flip can they improve upon the villain's dastardly scheme? And who the actual flip will be victorious in this week's competition? We mark the return with Ben Johnson of "Gentlemen Broncos" fame to do the Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx vehicle, "Law Abiding Citizen". Law Abiding Citizen is a 2009 American vigilante action thriller film directed by F. Gary Gray about a frustrated man who decides to take justice into his own hands after a plea bargain sets one of his family's murderers free. This one will be biblical. Next week we are not quite sure what movie we will be doing as we are still nailing it down...it could be “The Sound of Metal” with Rocky Ferrenburg, but that might push back a couple of weeks. I can tell you that in two weeks we will have James Jenneman of Blackbird on to talk about the Robin Williams / Nathan Lane comedy, “The Birdcage”. Murder Among the Mormons (2021) is the new Netflix true-crime docuseries about Mark Hofmann, who is one of the most notable forgers in history. Hofmann created forgeries related to the Latter Day Saint movement, which led to fame and fortune. But the truth caught up with Hofmann one fateful day in 1985, as two innocent people lost their lives. We are joined by award-winning co-director and producer of Murder Among the Mormons, Tyler Measom. His previous work includes Leaving the Cult: Sons of Perdition (2010), An Honest Liar (2014) and Biography: I Want My MTV (2019). Tyler directed this docuseries with Jared Hess, who is best known for his films Napoleon Dynamite (2004), Nacho Libre (2006) and Gentlemen Broncos (2009). Tyler talks about how he and Jared came to turn this story into a docuseries, as well as what they discovered about Mark Hoffman and the nature of belief. In the process we also learn about getting a film idea to the big screen. “The power he must have felt to create and change history, to alter what millions of people believe, and know and pray to every day – to have the power to change that in your basement is a remarkable feeling I suspect.” – Tyler Measom Time Stamps: 05:38 - What the series Murder Among the Mormons is about. 08:19 - Why the story wasn't heavily publicised at the time. 09:41 - How co-directors Tyler and Jared made the story so gripping. 11:20 - The boom period there was for collecting Mormon antiquities. 13:04 - How Mark Hofmann was such a successful forger. 16:02 - How Hofmann started his career in forging. 20:56 - Why he went into a life of deceit. 25:33 - Why Tyler and Jared decided to make a documentary about Hofmann. 30:42 - How a documentary goes from a brainstorming session to being on screen. 36:36 - The way a docuseries format gives the filmmakers more freedom. 37:49 - The willingness of people to be interviewed for the film. 41:45 - How they knew the film would be so successful. 45:59 - The reasons Mark conned Mormons. 49:01 - How Tyler kept his own beliefs regarding Mormonism separate from the film. 50:24 - What the film says about belief. 51:36 - The next projects Tyler is working on. For this episode of Box Office Battle we pit two movies about writers against each other. First Jared Hess offers a story of a thirteen year old who gets his story adapted into an awful movie, and at the same time his story is ripped off in a best selling novel in Gentlemen Broncos. Then Cronenberg's avant guarde adaptation of the William S. Burrows classic, Naked Lunch.
Gentlemen Broncos is a marvelous, heavily underrated film by Jared Hess that we’ve mentioned several times on previous episodes. Now we finally give it the dissection it deserves. This incredible soft-spoken film has so many terrific lessons on filmmaking, character development, story, and the all important soundtrack selection. This is a must-see movie, and one you should own. Gentlemen Broncos can be found on iTunes and Prime Video.

A mostly peaceful wildfire, probably from a maskless gender reveal that was conducted without proper social distancing, has de-nadded my co-host rendering him unable to connect to the internet so it is just me and Dirty J on this one. However, we do intend to create some bonus content so we can all hear Robert’s take on this and bask in his hate that I fully expect him to have for this one. Join us next week as we veer back to a more serious movie as we bring back Jared Wall of Breaking Liberty to discuss Hotel Rwanda. Show notes: http://www.actualanarchy.com/198 Presented by www.ActualAnarchy.com Robert and I analyze popular movies from a Rothbardian/Anarcho-Capitalist perspective. We use movies as a starting point for people who may not be familiar with this way of thinking. Discussion of the plot and decisions that characters make in relation to morality and violations of the non-aggression principle are our bread and butter. We also will highlight and discuss any themes or lessons from Austrian Economics that we can glean from the film. The point is to show what anarchy actually is with instances that are presented in film. We publish at least once per week; and occasionally will do specials surrounding holidays or events (elections/olympics) and have guests. SUBSCRIBE, RATE AND REVIEW ON APPLE PODCASTS (or iTUNES)
We discuss The Godfather Trilogy, a story of succession and a metaphor for capitalism where the distinction between mafia and government becomes blurred. We have the great Keith Knight of Don't' Tread on Anyone join us for a review we can't refuse. The Godfather is an American film series that consists of three crime films directed by Francis Ford Coppola inspired by the 1969 novel of the same name by Italian American author Mario Puzo. This is part one of the conversation and we will be having Keith on again in a few weeks to continue it. In our continuing series, we have watched the first and latest works from Jared Hess. Now we focus and discuss on Devin's favorite work from the director - Gentlemen Broncos. In a film that needs to be seen to be believed, Hess takes his biggest swings narratively and leaves the audience in a very weird and memorable place. Easily his most divisive movie to date but one of his funniest. Also, we are joined by a very special guest on the podcast to give his firsthand insight on the story of Gentlemen Broncos.

Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and William Thrasher discuss Star Trek Beyond from 2016. J.J. Abrams was unable to direct this flick, so Paramount decided to go with Justin Lin (Fast & Furious 6). The Enterprise crew goes on shore leave, but learns of a distress call. After investigating the matter at hand, dangerous alien ships tear the Enterprise to bits. The crew is stranded on a mysterious planet fraught with danger. Can Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto), McCoy (Karl Urban), and the rest escape? Mat and Thrasher love the new Castlevania animated series on Netflix. Thrasher gave Plan 9 from Outer Space another look and enjoys its charms despite its turgid pacing. Mat was let down by Masterminds, the latest flick from Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite). He much preferred an earlier comedy by Hess, Gentlemen Broncos. Cinema Throwdown is the only podcast featuring a showdown of cinematic proportions. Each week, hosts Jacob and Annie challenge each other to watch a movie and break it down in an endless movie watching struggle. This week, Jacob straight up slapped Annie in the face with Gentlemen Broncos. Jacob and Annie watched Gentlemen Broncos this week and even Jacob has to admit that this was a low blow. This was like a secret weapon, only to be inflicted upon the most hated of enemies. Gentlemen Broncos is one of Jacob's favorite movies, though he cannot understand why. Insane sci-fi, bizarre dialogue and even more bizarre delivery, and a story that is completely out of this world makes Gentlemen Broncos one of the strangest movies out there. Thank you for downloading Cinema Throwdown and listening to a couple of friends banter about movies. You can find us on twitter @cinemathrowdown or you can email us at cinemathrowdown@gmail.com. In the wake of the release of Masterminds, Chad Durham and Jake Hampton personally rank the five Jared Hess-directed movies Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre, Gentlemen Broncos, Don Verdean, and Masterminds. They try to analyze what makes a Jared Hess movie and push the theory that there is a lot more going on in Hess' movies than many people assume. The underlying sadness that pervades some of the movies particularly resonates for Jake, while Chad finds that he was more emotional moved by a few of the movies than he ever thought he would be. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/chad-durham8/support
