How can we use dramatisation to create tone? In this episode, Chas and Stu continue their deep dive into how to write tone by examining films with “light” (we use the phrase loosely) tones: LADY BIRD, EMILY THE CRIMINAL, THE BALLAD OF BUSTER SCRUGGS, and SPONTANEOUS. We also talk a surprising amount about DUNE and CRAZY STUPID LOVE. We focus on the relationship between character & tone and how the writers of these films use dramatisation to create their unique tones. We talk minimalism vs maximalism, dialogue, character actions & reactions, emotional dynamic range, and rules of the world vs given circumstances. Stu proposes a new triangle to help us understand the dials we as writers have to affect tone: the given circumstances of the story, how that effects character actions & reactions, and how the audience are told about those elements. Today we're talking about Emily the Criminal, the surprise indie hit from last year with tension, action, and Aubrey Plaza breaking bad. We discuss the movie's way of commenting on the current economic climate, how much of that commentary ultimately worked for us, and we try to remember the difference between prisons and jails. Also, why we hate scheduling. (Recorded August 6th, 2023.)
We check out a couple of films with criminal women. Alfred Hitchcock had just come off a run of four of his classic films when he directed "Marnie" in 1964. The story of a woman thief with a dark past, who has a weird relationship with a rich guy. The movie's poster had the words, suspenseful, sex, mystery, and there was none of those. On the brighter side, "Emily the Criminal" (2022) is a tight, interesting and well acted commentary on the world of work. Next up, multi-storied films is our theme with Ang Lees "Eat Drink Man Woman (1994) and Steve Martin in "Parenthood" (1989).Have your own recommendations? Contact the show:24theroadshow@gmail.com

This week, The Business revisits a conversation with actor Aubrey Plaza and director John Patton Ford about their film “Emily the Criminal.” When Plaza's colleague handed her the script for the drama thriller, she was immediately struck by it. “It was just one of those scripts that I started to read, and I just flew through it,” she says. “It's so readable and fun … it has this momentum that propels you forward.” While Plaza had found her next great project, Ford explains why it took 12 years to write the story. With Plaza, they discuss the struggles of making “Emily The Criminal” and independent movies in general, and the film's unexpected success. First, Kim Masters and Matt Belloni look into how the Writers Guild of America has voted to authorize strike, while Netflix details its plans for a crackdown on password sharing in the United States, and Fox News and Dominion reach a settlement.
Let's call a spade a spade! Theo Rossi is rapidly becomming one of the most interesting actors in Hollywood. Theo first rose to fame after playing "Juice" on seven seasons of Sons of Anarchy. He then did fantastic work on two seasons of Luke Cage. In the past few years he's separated himself from the pack. He blew us away as "Behind the Scene Gene" in Netflix's True Story. He mesmerized us all with his work as "Yousep" in Emily The Criminal. He can next be seen opposite Colin Farrell in HBO's "Pengiun" as well as Netflix's next best movie "Carry On" opposite Jason Bateman. In this episode you'll see why anybody who knows Theo considers him a source of inspiration. i had the good fortune of working with Theo on "Squeeler". Brenden and I are excited for you all to here this episode.

It's award season! To kickoff the show, Dylan unveils this year's SAG nominees, prompting he and Roger to engage in an impromptu live read and reaction to the list of nominees. The guys also dive into the winners and memorable speeches from this year's Golden Globes and share thoughts on Martin McDonagh's latest work of art, The Banshees of Inisherin, which took home a couple of Golden Globes. Prior to recording this pod, a collection of "winners" and "losers" assembled at the convenience store where the guys went to grab something to drink, and the experience was one we can all relate to, especially when in a rush. To wrap up the wild journey, Dylan and Rog review Aubrey Plaza's latest film, Emily The Criminal over a couple of nice cold Liquid Deaths. And yes, they do survive the episode. Jamie and Aaron discuss "Emily the Criminal" (2022), the new movie starring and produced by Aubrey Plaza and directed by John Patton Ford. In this gritty, low budget thriller, a 30-something art school drop-out (Plaza) with $70,000 of student loan debt and a minor criminal record breaks bad after a sexy swindler (Theo Rossi) introduces her to the lucrative world of credit card fraud. Is this an anti-capitalist film, or merely a slice of reality? Either way, we like it. Spoiler alert for this movie, obviously, but also season two of "White Lotus." Hey Film fans! Welcome back to another episode of Not A Bomb! We continue looking back at some of the biggest bombs of 2022 and this week is a “criminally” underseen film - Emily the Criminal. The movie stars a NAB favorite, Aubrey Plaza, and marks the film debut of writer/director - John Patton Ford. The guys are happy to welcome back, for a second week in a row, John Nance. The gang doesn't waste any time and dives deep into the social commentary layered throughout the film while highlighting the phenomenal performance by Plaza. Emily the Criminal might be the best film to discuss the struggles of the millennial generation as well as several 2022 economic topics like the “gig” economy and fraud. Don't worry - the film is a modern film noir and thriller first and foremost! Do yourself a favor and watch this film as soon as possible! When Aubrey Plaza's colleague handed her the script for “Emily the Criminal,” she was immediately struck by it. “It was just one of those scripts that I started to read, and I just flew through it,” she says. “It's so readable and fun…it has this momentum that propels you forward.” While Plaza had found her next great project, director John Patton Ford explains why it took 12 years to write the story. With Plaza, they discuss the struggles of making “Emily The Criminal” and independent movies in general, and the film's unexpected success. But first, Kim Masters talks to Matt Belloni about her 15-minute interview with Disney's head Bob Chapek at the D23 Expo, as well as the PR effort to give the embattled CEO an image reboot at the event.

Two interesting independent movies and another hacky Netflix movie with stars. Sounds like 2022. First we discuss Aubrey Plaza's "Emily the Criminal," and then get into the fascinating Gen Z murder mystery "Bodies Bodies Bodies." Then we do our best to sound interested in Jamie Foxx's "Day Shift." Timestamps: 9:22 "Emily the Criminal" 35:13 "Bodies Bodies Bodies" 57:11 "Day Shift" Thanks to Dylan Mayer and My Friend Mary, both of which are wonderful, for the music. We hope you enjoy.
