queen of the Amazons in Greek mythology
POPULARITY
Take me back to Paradise City er Island, where the grass is green and the women have style and are strong. It seems Diana is not the only Amazonian who has left Themyscira. Aresia has come to man's world not on a mission of peace, but a mission of death. Aresia has gathered the Injustice Gang (Star Sapphire, Tsukuri, Grundy, The Shade, and Copperhead) and is using them to collect technology, gems, and more from Gotham City. But when the men start to question her plan, she gasses them. She is making an antigen that infects and kills only men. As a child, she escaped a war-torn country only to have her ship destroyed by pirates. She washed up on Themyscira. The Amazons raised her as one of their own and even used magic to give her Amazonian strength and powers. But she took the Amazonian feelings about men and her history to build hate towards all men. The men of the Justice League are taken down by the antigen. This leaves only Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl to take down Aresia, Sapphire, and Tsukuri. With Hippolyta's help, they damage the plane carrying the antigen bombs. Aresia seemingly goes down with the plane. In the process Wonder Woman and Hippolyta learn the value of men and how the Themysciraian doctrine can be twisted. Welcome to our 6th iteration of the Black Girl's Guide to Surviving Menopause podcast: the Season of Orisii. Building on our international diasporic tour from last year, this season's theme is Orisii, or 'pairs' in the Afric language of Yoruba. We've invited different types of pairs to explore the through-line between menarche and menopause. You will hear parent/child, partner/lovers and siblings to offer their reflections and observations about this journey as individuals and as Orisii. We, as people capable of menstruation, understand that each experience is unique and impacts both ourselves and the connections we have with our loved ones. For our final interview for this Season of Orisii, our producer and BGG2SM Creative Director, Mariah M., interviews our Lead Menopause Cartographer and Founder of BGG2SM, known to us as Omisade but known by their sister, Georgette, and close family as Wilhelmina aka Billie. Together, they are affectionately known as “The Burney Girls”. Two fiery daughters were born to a Cancer mother and a Scorpio father who has passed away. They were raised by a Cancer stepfather who adopted them when he married their mother. They spent their time growing up between North Carolina and Maryland, and they spent summers in New York. Now, both mothers of boys and grandmother (Georgette) of boys, we discuss motherhood and auntieship and the tenderness of Scorpio Season. Autumn invites us to slow down and embrace letting go. Scorpio is the sign of transformation, death, and rebirth, and this season holds a special place for The Burney Girls as November holds both their mother's day of ascension as well as their father's birthday, now passed. Within this mourning of what was, a new relationship and way of connection to their parents was birthed. Wilhelmina and Georgette, each named after their late father, have used their grief as a path to deeper connection as sisters in adulthood. Produced by Mariah M., Managing Editor of Hippolyta's Journal by BGG2SM | hippolytasjournal.substack.com Interview conducted by Mariah M. When it comes to origins in comics it can be difficult to break new ground. However, Kelly Sue DeConnick found a way to bring a new vision to life for the world of Wonder Women. Wonder Women Historia explains how the Amazons were created, how Hippolyta: Diana's mother rose to power and the founding of island of Themyscira. DeConnick also teams up with 3 artists that bring her unique vision to each issue of this graphic novel featuring Phil Jimenez, Gene Ha, and Nicola Scott. This was also published from DC Comics: Black Label line. From the robust mythology of the Greek Gods to Hippolyta fighting of behalf of herself and her tribe of Amazons this epic story stands up shares the struggles of how they fought for their survival and justice for their people. We recommend this story for fans of Wonder Women, Greek Mythology and imaginative art styles that shows this larger than life world.

Time for a shout-out to two great Amazon warriors, Penthesilea and Hippolyta. Join old-school hosts, Sean Marlon Newcombe and Dawn "Sam" Alden, as they welcome one of our new hosts, Lauren Torres, to discuss these fabulous warrior women. It's good to be back!
This week, we review the 2017 DCEU blockbuster, "Wonder Woman." - How tall is Gal Gadot? Is she undersized for playing an Amazonian? Does she fill out the costume well enough? - How did the Geeks feel about the casting of Gal Gadot, beyond the physical? - What did the Geeks feel about the adaptation of Wonder Woman, her costume & equipment, other characters, and the island of Themyscira, from the comics? Which Geek missed the invisible jet? - Was there any logic in Hippolyta wanting Diana trained not at all or wanting her trained harder than anyone else, but not anything in between? - Was there any logic in the Amazons being a race of warriors but not willing to intervene in a war? Did the Amazons lose sight of their purpose? - Did the Geeks like the casting & performance of Chris Pine as Steve Trevor? - What were the Geeks' favorite moments & quotes from the movie? Which Geek said this movie contains the best moment in all the DCEU? Which line of dialogue almost gets one Geek choked up? - What did the Geeks think about the 3rd act, which is often criticized by people? Which Geek felt the 3rd act should have involved more hand-to-hand combat between Diana and an enemy, rather than the telekinesis, lasso work, and energy exchanges that we got instead? - Dave is usually the pickiest about villains. Were this movie's villains acceptable to him? Which Geek felt the villains were a little weak? Which Wonder Woman adversary from the comics did one Geek say he would have preferred seeing? - Which horror movie trilogy was randomly rolled for a future review? - Just how different is Andruw's voice between his first episode (over three years ago) and today? - And, which movie about the creator of the Wonder Woman character did three of the Geeks recommend? Listen now for the answers to these and wonder-ful questions, as we enter the trenches with..."Wonder Woman." We're approaching the end of season 3. At the heart of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream is a fantastical world of fairies, magic, and mythical creatures, and in this episode, we explore the different influences that helped to shape this world. First up, we look at the rich tradition of English fairy folklore, which was still very much a part of the popular imagination during Shakespeare's time. We take a journey back in time to the early medieval period, when the Anglo-Saxon and Celtic cultures first began to develop their own unique traditions around fairies and other supernatural beings. As we progress through history, we discover how these beliefs evolved and became woven into the fabric of English culture during Shakespeare's time. We also delve into the influence of Greco-Roman mythology on the play, which is perhaps most evident in the characters of Theseus and Hippolyta. We will also explore how Greco-Roman mythology influences Shakespeare's depicition of the fairies. The fairy queen Titania, for example, takes her name from a figure in ancient Greek mythology, and her depiction in the play draws on this tradition as well as on the English fairy folklore that was prevalent during Shakespeare's time. We will also discuss how appreciating the impact and influence of these cultural traditions today can impact productions and modern readings of this play. Jace and Rocky take a deep dive into the DC titles for August 22, 2022. We get a look at Hippolyta in the realm of the gods, we get a look at the prep work Ice did when she found out Christopher Chance was looking to interrogate her and Batman drops some great one-liners at the expense of President Lex Luthor as they search for Superman.
Our Story Storyteller Maura McMahon offers us a clip from her show, Launching Ships: A User's Guide for Your Face. She took to the stage at Green Kill Art Center in Kingston, NY in spring 2022 and was accompanied by musician David Gonzalez. You'll hear the events in the final moments of the Trojan War, as that infamous horse full of Spartan warriors is allowed into the city gates after a ten-year battle. Our Guest Maura McMahon is a storyteller and spoken word poet whose collection of Irish tales, pirate adventures, and women's sovereignty songs have entranced and empowered audiences across regional venues in New York's Hudson Valley for over 15 years. As a character performer, Maura has embodied Grace O'Malley, and the Grey Sea Hag as well as Hippolyta the Amazonian Queen. My family most loves seeing Maura when she appears as Mrs. Claus of the Hudson Valley Our Conversation Marisa and Maura discuss what it means to tell the story of a character who inhabits a space in “Myth with a Capital M” and they explore: Telling this story was a creative leap for Maura, a storyteller most at home with Celtic tales. Two thirds of this story comes from the original sources, including Virgil and Homer, and one third is Maura's creative invention. Ultimately, it is a reclaiming of Helen's story told through her own eyes. Helen was renowned for her beauty, but what made Helen beautiful? People saw in her what they needed to. Helen played a pivotal role in so many men's stories, and yet she retained her sovereignty, her power, and her sense of self. How this story emerged through conversations with a goddess and building a relationship with a character, and what that meant to Maura as storyteller and as an individual going through her own process. What it means to tell a story outside of your own lineage and your usual source material. During the creative process, Maura asked, “Who am I to tell the story of a Greek goddess?” https://youtu.be/FzO2-sLJ-5s (Watch Maura's entire show on Green Kill's YouTube Channel. ) You can also hear Maura's story of Máire Rua O'Brien, a 17th century Irish heroine inhttps://player.captivate.fm/episode/f7ff8601-71a3-4ba7-a33e-2fc4d70887c7 (, “A Most Ferocious Lady of the Castle,”) episode 3 of season 1 of KnotWork Storytelling. In a perfect world, the heroes would have the time to do everything they need to do - time to care for their loved ones, time to grieve for those they have lost, time to take care of the threat to the safety of the world and those that live in it. Unfortunately, Theros is not a perfect world. So it is that on the next morning after the funeral of Fury Squadron, the group parts ways, with Priam and Toragone taking Hippolyta back to Akros, while the rest of the crew soldiers on towards the titan - and, perhaps, the monster that slaughtered Eva's old squad. But the deeper they go into Phoberos, the more dangerous the land seems to become, and one member of the party in particular will have to face the danger they themselves pose while traversing this hostile territory. Who, you may ask? Find out on this episode of Dice Sesh!
As Eva and Spyro fly back from their meeting with Hippolyta, Priam and Jude share a moment as the unscarred warrior ponders where his true duties lie, while the troubled anvilwrought contemplates recent events as well as recount his past. The next day brings planning, as Eva and the rest of the group decide how to best approach the forces of Mogis and ensure Fury Squadron's survival. With a stratagem in mind, Priam and Spyro set out as an advance force, but what the find waiting in the canyons of Phoberos... Well... you'll just have to listen and find out on this episode of Dice Sesh. End credits song: Melancholia - Godmode
Maura McMahon is a storyteller and spoken word poet whose collection of Irish tales, pirate adventures, and women's sovereignty songs have entranced and empowered audiences across regional venues in New York's Hudson Valley for over 15 years. Her deeply engaging performative style is imbued with the Celtic spirit. As a character performer, Maura has embodied Grace O'Malley, and the Grey Sea Hag as well as Hippolyta the Amazonian Queen and Mrs. Claus of the Hudson Valley. Maura McMahon comes to tell us a story of a bold, complicated Irish woman of the 17th century who shares her beautiful name. She was first introduced to this story through a book by the https://amzn.to/3tYB3e0 (wonderful folklorist Eddie Lenihan, Ferocious Irish Women.) Known to history as Máire Rua O'Brien, our heroine was born a MacMahon at Bunratty Castle in County Clare and was a resident of the famous Leamaneh Castle in The Burren. This is a story of love and loss, of cunning and sovereignty. How and why does this story matter to us? What it takes to care for your children and yourself when you're endangered The question of what it means to be a heroine: does it have to be about being “ferocious”? Woman's sovereignty and choice and how it can be found through partnership and outside it The myth of redheads and their fiery temperament The enduring nature of strong women's stories As a storyteller, refusing to drop the parts of the story are “ugly” or that the audience may not like, especially when the listeners have a sense of which side is right or wrong and you're telling historical tales. NRC Reviews Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons #1 by Kelly Sue Deconnick & Phil Jimenez The wait is over, and the entire story of the Amazons can finally be told! Millennia ago, Queen Hera and the goddesses of the Olympian pantheon grew greatly dissatisfied with their male counterparts…and far from their sight, they put a plan into action. A new society was born, one never before seen on Earth, capable of wondrous and terrible things…but their existence could not stay secret for long. When a despairing woman named Hippolyta crossed the Amazons' path, a series of events was set in motion that would lead to an outright war in heaven—and the creation of the Earth's greatest guardian! Legendary talents Kelly Sue DeConnick and Phil Jimenez unleash a reading experience the likes of which you've never seen, with unbelievably sumptuous art and a story that will haunt you—with subsequent issues featuring art by modern masters Gene Ha and Nicola Scott! One of the most unforgettable DC tales of all time begins here!
In this episode, we are going back Back BACK in time... or something like that. Shorin and Kelsee are contemplating the concept of time travel by way of extraterrestrial reincarnation. Yeah, it's one of those. Buckle up if you don't wanna get lost in the time-space continuum.

Let's Talk About Myths, Baby! Greek & Roman Mythology Retold
The incredible women of the Amazons exist in myth and history, even if their myths tend to revolve around certain Greek heroes. Otrera, Hippolyta, Antiope, Penthesilea... CW/TW: far too many Greek myths involve assault. Given it's fiction, and typically involves gods and/or monsters, I'm not as deferential as I would be were I referencing the real thing.Sources: The Amazons by Adrienne Mayor; Homer's Iliad, translated by Caroline Alexander, another translated by Richard Lattimore; Theoi.com entries on Otrera, Penthesilea, and the Amazonian nymph Harmonia.Attributions and licensing information for music used in the podcast can be found here: mythsbaby.com/sources-attributions. Although Theseus never actually existed, Plutarch, in documenting his life, wants to cull important lessons for Greeks and Romans. Just as Theseus wrestles with villains threatening civilization, Plutarch forces his readers to grapple with the role of virtue in politics, or, less abstractly, the role the virtuous man has to play in his polis: i.e. how to be a citizen rather than a subject. This becomes explicit at the end of Theseus's life when he ceases to be a good king and becomes a tyrant, stripping citizenship from the Athenians by returning them to subjugation under a king. For our first episode, we knew we had to welcome a guest who could match our steez ― someone proudly, loudly and unquestionably Black, unbothered by his haters and with an uncommon amount of energy. We wanted someone whose spirit would help set the tone for the types of wide-ranging convos we'll be having with y'all each week. Enter Jamaal Bowman from New York, a rising star of the Democratic Party, a former school principal and ― we should say ― a certified rhyme-spitter.Bowman, a first-time candidate for Congress and a progressive, rode a wide wave of multiracial support to defeat his opponent, 16-term incumbent Eliot Engel, to become the Democrats' pick to represent New York's 16th District. And he did it all in true style and slight flex. Bowman's got that Baldwin-like fire inside him, and he chops it up with us to break down power, the pandemic and Raekwon's classic album “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx.” We also discuss the latest updates in the Breonna Taylor case, the presidential debate shitshow, Wendy verzuz Nene and how Hippolyta teaches us all how to truly support Black women.
