Rebecca Groves from Northfield, Minnesota joins me today as she talks about her challenges as a wife and mother on their homestead. Her husband is the author of two books, Durable Trades, and The Family Economy.
Jeremy is joined by Rory Groves, who moved his family to a homestead 12 years ago and eventually quit his software engineer job to build a family economy. They talk about the implications of the industrial revolution and how anti-family (and anti-God) it is, and how families can start to make the mindset shift to build a family economy in a modern world. There are some really fundamental, theological questions that require wrestling with, because so many Christians today give up some fundamental arguments to the secular world, and Jeremy and Rory break many of these down around topics like work, family, economy, and more. They look ahead at the next few years and what to expect with AI, and Rory gives an overview of his book Durable Trades as a way to defend your family against the likely devastation that's incoming. Curtis interviews Rory Groves about his new book, The Family Economy, and his son Ivar about his 7th-grade homeschool project of growing all the food their family of 8 needs for 2024. As threats to our freedoms, families, faith, and food increase around us, it is time to take seriously our responsibility to detach from the BIG Corrupt Systems that seek total control. We need to perfect our systems, rebuild our families/communities, and return to the old paths that flourished for thousands of years. Consider getting copies of Rory Groves's books; The Family Economy and Durable Trades. Curtis breaks down 10 signs that prove elites are pushing the world toward tyranny, including the demolition of energy and food infrastructure, the mass collection of biometric data, and the elimination of blue and white-collar jobs. Curtis also addresses the difference between leaders who are ignorant and those who are evil and shows that their clock-like consistency demonstrates their actions are not bumbling “mistakes,” but willfully evil. There is always a purposeful agenda behind every seemingly unrelated action. We live in an age where the family is viewed primarily as a unit of consumption. Families consume entertainment together, take vacations together, eat out together, and buy gifts for each other on birthdays and holidays. And these are great things to do together. But historically and biblically families were also productive and worked together to create valuable products and services through family households, homesteads, businesses and farms. Families that worked together with a common desire to serve others had unity and were at the foundation of healthy economies. For many of us one of the attractions of agriculture is the ability to do meaningful work together with the people that we love most in life: our family. Fewer and fewer jobs today allow for the participation of multiple ages and generations and agriculture is a space particularly suited for building and investing in relationships. And while this is the intention for many of us, the reality of learning to do this on a daily basis while coming from a culture of fragmentation, efficiency, and production can be challenging. In this episode I speak with Rory Groves, author of the book Durable Trades, about the blessing and challenge of learning to be productive families that work as a team as we learn to listen to and follow Jesus together. One thing this current pandemic has done for us is to cause us to examine carefully just how fulfilling our life's work is. Today, a high number of people have reevaluated their lives and concluded that it just isn't good enough. Maybe you're searching for something real right now—a totally different kind of life that matches all those dreams you used to have. That's the way it was for today's guest, Rory Groves. He examined hundreds of occupations that have survived at least 230 years since America's founding, scoring them according to their stability, family-centeredness, income, and other factors. He then ranked these professions from most durable to least. All this is in his unique book, Durable Trades. Rory is with us today to talk about his book and his own journey from the high tech industry to homesteading.

It speaks of the impending American fertilizer shortages and how they are set to heighten the food crisis in 2022. This is a video addressing the CHEMICAL fertilizers nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. What may or may not be known is that animal manure contains these fertilizer elements in varying ratios! In addition to fertilizer, animal manure contains high amounts of carbon (organic matter) which increases soil fertility in ways that chemical fertilizers cannot. Occupations are regularly created and destroyed in modern industrial America. But Rory Groves went back to the jobs that existed at the founding of the country to see which ones have stood the test of time for over 200 years, compiling them into his book Durable Trades: Family-Centered Economies That Have Stood the Test of Time. From farmer to midwife to coachman to brewer, Rory and I talk about trades that have proven themselves durable and how they are still alive in the world today. But when he started having kids, he found that he wanted to create something more lasting and have a different kind of lifestyle that would let him work with his family more as his kids were growing up. So he did some researching that resulted in a big shift. Let's dive in. How big is your God? That's a big question all right and it should be. Is your God big enough to provide fiber, food and shelter should you follow the seed that God has planted in your heart? Rory Groves wasn't entirely sure but he knew that spending time with his family was a currency that came with a price and he didn't want to waste every chance he had with his family so he and his wife set out to change their economy from the world to a family centered economy. Out of this seed has grown the Grovestead, his family farm that has become a teaching farm for his community and most importantly his family. Rory took his passion for research and created a book called "Durable Trades" that is a compilation of all the different jobs since essentially the beginning of history that families have done to thrive and prosper in their economy. Durable Trades is literally a blueprint of what you could do if the desire to learn and be mentored is there for the individual looking to get away from the day to day and begin to spend a life of living. Too many of us think that our God is not concerned with the day to day issues of our lives and nothing could be further from the truth and Rory has proved that over and over with rabbits, chickens and building fences. God cares about everything and it takes a belief in a big God to reveal that to ourselves. There is still room for you out there in the country if you're just willing to believe and practice discipline. You can reach out to Rory at www.thegrovestead.com and buy his book, take a class and you can probably even milk the goat if you get there early enough.

In this episode, I review Rory Groves’ book, Durable Trades: Family Centered Economies that Have Stood the Test of Time. One of my favorite new books for 2021, Groves’ book details the trades that were around when the U.S. was founded and that still exist today. It’s a great book for men, sons, & fathers as they seek to establish durable households in a world of chaos. Notes: Rory Groves’ Website. Discounted book for sale. C.R. Wiley, Man of the House.
